This seemed to be a very popular restaurant and we tried it. The day we went in it was so full that we couldn't get a table. We visited again on a less busy day and we tried their vegetarian dishes. Their soup and pakoras were really good. Samosas and paneer items were also very good! read more

I found them very expensive. Dinner for two, no appies, and one glass of wine, with tip came to 80 but the food was very good. I think you're way better off coming for their buffet at lunchtime. I'm not sure how much it is exactly but I'm sure it won't cost you $80. read more

Any other Indian restaurant charges about $10 for curry chicken. This place charges $20. They claim two can eat for that price but it's actually the same serving size as anyone else for $10. I ordered a double vodka and water. $38 for that drink. ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? Hate this place. 1 drink and chicken curry and rice and naan cost $100. This is OUTRAGEOUS. Lots of Indian restaurants around. Don't go to this one please. Go to Mia's Indian cuisine on Richmond. It's WAY better at half the price plus the food is amazing! read more

I used to be a regular at this place but recently I've been hearing that the quality has diminished significantly... Being the foodie that I am, I had to see for myself. I ordered take out 30 mins before pickup and when I arrived it was STILL not ready. No problem, that's cool, yay for fresh food! That didn't bother me :) After waiting 15 mins at the restaurant, I'm given my food.. I ordered the tandoor platter which comes with salad and RICE. I get home and there's no rice... I normally don't fuss, but no naan or rice? How am I gonna eat these? So I give them a call, the OWNER lady picks up.. When I tell her about the rice she goes 'oh.' That's it... And I'm like ya ... You won't even guess what she said next. Lol. "Oh it's only 5 ounces of rice... It's very very little, it's okay" LOL WHAT?! No it is definitely NOT okay. Anyways... I ask her if she has delivery so she says no (lol but they do offer delivery) and so she's like "just come pick it up.. It's just 5 ounces but come" So I drove all the way there.. And got the rice.. So whatever that customer service sucks. If I remember correctly this place has good food. So I open my food.. The salad is absolutely dry with no dressing what so ever... But whatever. So I start eating the COLD tandoori mind you.. And I find a HAIR. Honestly, what worse could there be but hair in your food.... $25 meal and really not even worth $5. Don't waste your money.. Not sure what I should really be giving this place considerign the circumstances, so I will sit on the fence and give it a 3 star for now, and I will keep this place in mind in future. We were looking for a quick light bite before the movies (The Colliseum really is litterally across the street from here). This place "called" to us because of the wonderful aromas emanating from the place. However, when we walked in, the person who greeted us was at the complete opposite end of the restaurant, and she said we could sit anywhere we liked. It wasn't packed; it was easy to choose a spot. Then she was pretty quick bringing over the menu. Unfortunately, that was the last we saw of the wait service during this visit. No buffet available at this time (It was about 5:30pm on a Monday evening) so, from the menu I was looking at the butter chicken, which was about $18. But I would have wanted nan bread with it, and samosas, not to mention rice - all priced separately, over and above the price of the main dish. This combination would have been too much food, and too expensive for this particular visit. In short, we did not end up eating here this evening, but the aroma of the food was very promising. I will keep this place in mind for an occasion when I have time to sit and enjoy, and some money to spend on the visit. This restaurant should be the star event of the evening. read more

Highly overrated Indian restaurant in Carling. It was a Saturday so there was no buffet option so we went a la carte. Here's what we ordered Mulligatawny Soup & Veg Soup ; Veg Pakoras (deep fried crispy batter with veggies) & the main course The soups were barely passable they were made of the same base - the difference between the veg and mulligatawny was just that one had veggies and other had shredded chicken - very disappointing - veg pakoras were not fresh they were made earlier and were reheated in oil - duh! you can't fool the customers For the main course we ordered Garlic Naan (Bread sprinkled with garlic bits), Matar Palao (steamed rice with peas), Malai Kofta (deep fried veggie balls in thick and creamy sauce), Indian Fish Curry and a dahi raita (yogurt mixed with cucumbers) The breads were ordinary - could have been softer; Malai kofta was OK - if you have tasted butter chicken before then replace the chicken with veggie balls and that's about it Matar palao was again ordinary Indian Fish curry was the worst - there was a stark contrast to the curry and the fish - fish was bland but the curry was too tangy and spicy which was a weird combination to eat either with rice or with a bread dahi raita was the only good thing here oh yeah the service was warm and friendly so that's for the another star Would I go there again - naah I wouldn't think about it again - for the price I paid I could go out and eat thrice at Indian restaurants on Carling which serve much tastier food read more

Checked out this place on a day off with BF, we wanted to try their lunch buffet. It's a very small restaurant, only about 8-10 tables. The buffet is in the back, there's not a lot of space to form a line if several people are there at the same time. Better stay seated until you see the way is clear. The restaurant was clean. The waiter was attentive, taking empty plates away quickly and frequently refilling water. The food was decent, but it was inconsistent. The 1st batch of butter chicken was good, chicken was tender and sauce was creamy. The 2nd batch was more runny/watery and tasted more like tomato than anything else. The vegetable korma was not bad but I had better elsewhere. The naan bread could have been a bit more fluffy but tasted fine. It's not a bad place if you are craving Indian for lunch, they have a decent variety available. But since I've had better Indian elsewhere, it's unlikely I will return. read more

I brought my mom here for the lunch buffet based on a recommendation. I'd like to say that the food overall was satisfying for lunch but there were many things I think would have made it better... I found the tandoori chicken lacked flavour and didn't seem marinated in yogurt and lemon at all. The chicken in the butter chicken seemed to be added after not cooked in the sauce.. It lacked flavour and was not soft. It would have been nice to have had one paneer dish up there too. The vegetables in the vegetable korma were frozen in the standard shapes which didn't seem hard to make really...oh and there was a small container of naan that was filled and gone in a matter of minutes.. It would be nice to have more naan out at all times. I've been to many Indian buffets in Michigan and Toronto areas and I just thought for the price it didn't seem worth it. I would have been very satisfied if it was ten dollars though.. But it was more than 15 dollars a person! It cost too much for what was being offered. I'll be trying other buffets to find the one I think is the best quality for price or best value. read more

Famous butter chicken? For ABSOLUTELY good reason!! I've had a LOT of butter chicken over the years, it's one of my favourites... but NEVER have I had a butter chicken as good as THIS one! The chicken was tender, and the sauce... just over the top WOW!! Creamy, rich, with a nice bit of subtle heat. Paired with some buttered naan it's definitely a culinary dream! Also pretty darn amazing was the saag chicken my date ordered! OK HERE'S THE DEAL... You're going to want to order the butter chicken... it's a MUST! And you're going to want to order the saag chicken! And you're going to want to order BOTH with naan so you can use it to get every last bit of sauce off your plate, AND out of the serving dish! YES IT'S THAT GOOD!! The place is small, and intimate. It's quiet. The wait staff are courteous and not obtrusive, but attentive. A place I'll for sure return to over and over :) read more

My go-to for a dinner after seeing a movie at the nearby Cineplex is usually Little India Cafe but they were closed (for renevations I think?) so we decided to try Taj Indian Cuisine. The curries we ordered were delish. Not overly oily and runny or with barely any meat, which can be an issue with other Indian places. Was satisfied with the food. The only thing that soured me was that the woman that took our order was lowkey lying to us about running out of their tandoori dishes. My brother, my boyfriend and I tried ordering a tandoori platter and she said she didn't have that anymore. Ok so what about tandoori chicken or the chicken tikka? Again she said she didn't have that but she said they had the Tandoori Chicken Tikka biryani so we got that instead only to see a table behind us that showed up not that long after we did, eating tandoori chicken behind us. This kinda ticked me off because I was really looking forward to at least trying one of their dishes. I guess next time I'm in the area and Little India Cafe is closed or too busy this place will probably be my #2. read more

The Food did not taste fresh at all. I am Indian so have a taste for quality Indian food . It was also not warm enough which makes me think it was sitting a while before serving us. I had to ask for food to be warmed up which I rarely do at Indian restaurant. The prices are outrageous for quality of food. Curries are $22 range and one small Nan is $4. Coke is $4 and beer is $10. The waitress was good but over worked with the Ubereats. We hardly eat the food. Paid over $85 for 2 curries & 2 nan. This is a shame as this place had great food a few years back. read more

With an extensive gluten free selection, Taj is one of my favorite Indian restaurants ever and certainly the best in Ottawa. Sharma, our waitress, was very sweet and kind. She had very good menu suggestions and deftly accommodated my father's celiac disease. If you have celiac disease or are gluten sensitive, Taj is the place to go. The whole menu, with a few exceptions (the Naan, for example), is gluten free. read more

Just went here for the first time with a friend for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. I really didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. The decor is very nice and classy on the inside. It wasn't really busy when we went in (around 4pm). The mood of the restaurant was quiet and relaxed which is what I adore. The service was very fast and very nice. We shared amongst ourself some samosas and onion bhaji as appetizers. And then we shared a main course of chicken tandoori and then asked for some classic naan. The food was very well made and delicious. I enjoyed it all, and as a chicken lover who usually enjoys fried chicken (southern family) I really enjoyed the flavor, taste and presentation. An additional pleasantry was that the waitress knew to split our bill in half instead of waiting for us to ask for it. It just made the whole payment transaction so much easier. They're very meticulous and pay attention to the customer - added bonus for sure! I would very much love to go there again soon. read more

What a darling little place! Located on Carling right across the street from The Coliseum movie theatre, it's a convenient spot to head before or after a movie. I decided to order some takeout around 9 p.m. on a Monday evening, and was having trouble finding any Indian place that would deliver, or was even open that late. Thankfully, this place was open, and the staff member who answered the phone was really pleasant and funny. She asked for our address and said "I can drop it off at your place on my way home around 10, or you can come pick it up right now." I thought it was unbelievably sweet of her to offer to drop it off, even though they weren't really doing delivery anymore. Of course I told her not to worry and I would come pick it up. When we pulled up it looked like this place was all closed up, but it was still open with a few lights on. They were clearly closing up, but everyone was so kind and sweet and the place is really cute. We ordered the butter chicken with jasmine rice, and a side of naan. Everything was really good. We ordered it medium heat, which was a little too spicy for me (read: I'm an effing baby when it comes to spice), so I'd probably go for the mild next time. That being said, the sauce was deliciously creamy and the chicken didn't taste super-dry which I kind of expected for it being so late in the evening. The highlight was definitely the naan. It was chewy and delicious and I want more of it right this second. One order of all the above came to about $25 and fed two of us. I thought it was a great meal and worth every penny. My husband is a chef so we do not eat out much, but when we do we go to Taj! The best Indian Restaurant in Ottawa. I agree with other reviewers about the butter chicken, it is our favorite dish. If you like a bit of spice order the medium instead of mild, the sauce is so good we don't waste a drop. We also order the eggplant, vegi curry or fish curry and aloo matar (potato's and pea's). We finish off with rice and buttered naan. The onion bhaji is also to die for. As a few other reviewers said it is more expensive then other places but I think it is well worth it. I wouldn't want them to change their quality. Also when we order we do get two meals out of it so it is worth it to us. :) read more

So, we planned to go to Little India Cafe, but found it closed. Luckily, we found Taj right down the street, because we were starving. We were pleased with the ambiance and decor - it is a lovely little restaurant. The waiter was very friendly, and was able to help us order a dish that wasn't on the menu (we wanted paneer, but with the sauce from butter chicken). However, he also suggested a few things quickly (rice and naan), and I only partially heard him and said, "yes". We started with vegetable pakora, which was good, but bland. I noticed there was not papadum with chutney, which is the first time I've been out for Indian and had it. For our meal, we had Chana Masala, Panner with Butter Chicken Sauce, Garlic Naan, and Vegetable Rice. The Chana Masala was different than any I've had previously - not a tomato-based sauce; it was dark brown. The Butter Chicken sauce was wonderful, but the Paneer was really weird - more like a meatball with mushy (rice?) ingredients. Edible, but just. This rice had what appeared to be bagged frozen veggies cooked in it, which was fine. The Naan was good. We ordered medium spicy (compared to mild), and all the food seemed pretty bland. The meal was only about 5 out of 10 stars for us, but then we received the bill, and were a bit surprised that it was over $50. Apparently the rice that the waiter suggested ("vegetable rice"?) was $6, and our okay/bland meals were $15 each. Every Indian restaurant I've ever been to gives you rice with your meal, and $15 seems steep for a chickpea vegetarian dish for lunch. If the food was fantastic, I would gladly pay over $50 for lunch for two, but it wasn't, and I wasn't impressed with the prices. My girlfriend and I have been here for both dinner and lunch. The first time we were there, we got the sense the owner was neglecting us to favour his regulars, and while I get wanting to reward repeat business, you need to show new customers attention so THEY will become new customers. The food was very good, however; tender lamb for my vindaloo, juicy chicken for her tikka misala.And it was fast service, on that I agree. The buffet lunch is a steal; you can't go wrong at $15 per person when you have about 6 curries, rice, pakorma, salad, naan and lots of other things. Also, despite it being a buffet, the owner's wife actually brought fresh-baked pieces around to each table, which was a nice touch. So many wonderful things to say about Taj Indian Cuisine! When you walk in you're greeted by a cheerful husband and wife, with warm colours and lighting it's a very cozy atmosphere. I've been here a few times but I always accept their recommendations as everything they've brought me is always the most amazing tastes ever! They offer mild or spicy, vegetarian/vegan or meat, everything exploding with flavour! Best na'an you've ever tasted. Ever. I've been meaning to put in a review for Taj for quite some time, now, but it's hard to put all of our experiences here into one review. Over the past several years, we've eaten here dozens of times, and ordered takeout I don't know how much. There have been times we got takeout three times in one week. It's our go-to place for special occasions, comfort food, out of town guests, and "just because". I'm thoroughly addicted to the malai kofta, and my husband uses their butter chicken as the benchmark against which all other butter chicken compares. (The best butter chicken he finds elsewhere earns the compliment "It's delicious -- but not as good as Taj.") Birthdays, New Years, whatever, my husband always laughs if I ask what he wants to do, because we both know the only choice is Taj. And to top it off, the staff is so friendly and warm, you feel absolutely at home there. My parents came to visit, and we (of course) took them to Taj (actually, one night my husband and my father picked up takeout as a surprise, and then we went again on their last night visiting). My father is a huge food buff, and a fantastic chef in his own right, and he and the owner got along swimmingly. Now, when we stop in, this kind fellow still asks how my parents are doing and sends his regards. I can't think of a nicer place for delicious meal and happy atmosphere. As for food -- malai kofta and makhni paneer are my favs. It can be hard to decide, so sometimes I get both, and take 3/4 home to have the next day or two. It goes really well with the vegetable biryani, which is a delicious vegetable rice dish. My husband always gets the butter chicken, but if he gets a second dish, there's several chicken or lamb dishes with which he's also thoroughly happy. For appetizers, my favourite is the paneer pakoras (best brushed into a mix of the tamarind sauce and mint chutney that you spoon onto your plate and mix.). There's also a potato chaat (perhaps it was simply called aloo chaat?) that I had the time before last that was really overwhelmingly good. We also always get at least two naan -- one butter and one garlic -- which is best when you use it to scoop up a bite of sauce and biryani wrapped in the hot flatbread). For dessert try the gulab jamun with a cup of chai (which is always quite hot when they bring it out, so you may need to let it cool a bit). The gulab jamun is quite sweet, so the best way to have it is, don't sweeten your chai, but instead take a bite of the gulab jamun and then a sip of the chai, and let the flavours blend. I could go on and on, but the gist is this -- splendid food, splendid people, lovely atmosphere, you cannot go wrong and you're sure to have a lovely time. read more

We order from this place all the time off Uber eats. The butter chicken is absolutely amazing! I ordered from Uber eats today and the driver cancelled when he saw how far I lived, after fighting on the phone with Uber eats to try and get another driver out there it wasn't working so we had to go and pick it up. The lady I dealt with was so nice! She apologized many times even though it wasn't their fault and remade the food so it was warm when we could pick it up. Never tried curry before and got to have my first experience here. Chicken curry was amazing, can't stop thinking about it. Just want more. For the price you'd think they would include the rice and/or bread, but they don't. About 18$ for the curry, 4$ for rice. Taste wise, amazing. Would definitely go again. read more

Came here valentines day and was very pleased. We received flowers which was a cute touch, the buffet was very good, but the fried pakoras really did it for us! Soooo good we kept getting baskets sent over to our table! Very nice owners as well i will be back!
