TLDR: Good kabobs. The beef one was a bit gamey though. The BOGO UberEats deal was awesome, $19.99 for 2 Mixed Shami Platters. Salang Kabob House has been on my list of places to try for some time now, so I was thrilled when I saw that they had a BOGO (buy one get one free) special on UberEats. It was $19.99 BOGO for a Mixed Shami Platter. So this is what I got. Each platter came with a ground chicken kabob, a ground beef kabob, rice, salad and naan. It was a lot of food and a great deal. I enjoyed the chicken shami, but I found the beef shami a bit gamey. The kabobs had a good flavour to them. The rice was soft and fluffy and nicely seasoned, but a little bit oily for my tastes. The salad was iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and red onions. Vegetables were fresh and crisp. The salad came with a spicy red sauce, which I liked, and a creamy dressing, which I didn't use. The naan was tasty and I appreciated that it didn't have pesky sesame seeds sprinkled on it like some other places. I ordered for pickup and the food was ready in about 15-20 minutes. Pickup was quick and efficient. The restaurant has lots of seating inside. There's free parking available in front of the restaurant. The parking is shared with neighbouring businesses. Rounding up from 3.5 stars. I got the Sultani Platter, with came with one tikka and one shami kabob, rice, salad, and naan. I chose chicken tikka and beef shami. I also upgraded to qabulli rice instead of just regular, and Salang salad instead of regular. I wanted to try the Qabulli rice because it's Afghanistan's national dish. It had the addition of julienned carrots and sultana raisins, and I believe it typically has sliced almonds as well, but this one didn't. The Salang salad had the addition of feta and kalamata olives, along with the iceberg and romaine Lettuce, cucumber, tomato, red onion, and pickled pepper. The platter had some weight to it! The salad came with both ranch and Greek dressing. They were fine, though I wish there was some other house dressing. The chunks of feta were great, softer than I expected and less dense, less salty. All in all, the salad wasn't anything special, but I did appreciate the fresh component to the dish. I'm not usually a fan of chicken breast, but the chicken was very moist and flavourful. Beef shami is always a safe bet for me. This one was a little more done/drier and saltier than I would've liked, but still good and the flavour was there. Both had the grill flavour that I enjoy. The tomato chutney that came with it was nice. It was almost like a fresh salsa but not chunky, and with a little spicy kick to it. The kabuli pulao (though they spell it "qabulli" rice) was tasty. They were very generous with the raisins and I wasn't big on the sweetness. The carrots were cooked and tasted a bit sweet to me also, but not sure if it was just the raisins cooked with them. Maybe the almonds would've helped cut the sweetness. I really liked the basmati rice itself, which was flavoured. It was great to try the qabulli rice, but I think I'll get the regular rice next time. The plain naan was good, nice a fresh, crispier on the outside and doughier on the inside. If you've never had Afghan naan before, it's not the same as Indian naan. Indian naan is thinner, flakier, and larger, whereas Afghan naan is thicker, denser. I do wish I had something to dip it in or had it buttered or something, but it's great bread and I had already filled up on the rice, so I actually split it and saved the other half to use in a sandwich later. My husband got the beef shami platter, which came with two shamis, and an upgrade to garlic naan. I tried some of the naan, and while good, I found salty. Maybe they used garlic salt? I also got the ayran/doogh to drink and the firnee for dessert. Doogh is like a salted yogurt drink that I've only tried maybe once in the past, so I thought I'd try it again. It was okay, but I couldn't finish the whole bottle. The firnee was homemade and very tasty. Not at all as sweet as I expected, and I loved how creamy/milky it was, and the crushed cardamom and finely chopped pistachios on top. It was perfect. Why does this restaurant only have 35 reviews and 4 star?!? This place deserve more patrons and 5 stars!!! Husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant when we were craving Kabobs on our 5 day trip to Ottawa. We got here on a weekday about 20 minutes before they close but did not feel rushed at all. Emily and Sarah served us and they are the sweetest! Everything we ordered was great and while I am typing this review, my mouth is salivating. We ordered a bunch of food and had leftovers which was perfect was next day's lunch. We had: Shami Kabob, Bowlani, Salang Salad, Afghan Naan, Cheesy Garlic Naan, Eggplant Quorma, Butter Chicken, side of rice and Firnee. Highly recommend eating here. It is a very simple no frill restaurant, but the food is fantastic and more than compensates for the lack of a fancy decor. read more

This place is a typical Afghani restaurant - the exact same kabob with rice, salad, naan and even the sauce. The kabob is cooked to near perfection - it's tender and rich in flavour. The rice is a tiny bit too oily and the salad is pretty disappointing (literally just veggies cut into pieces with no salt or spices). The sauces are a bit weird to my taste - I don't feel like they go well with their kabob or salad. Other than that, they serve large portions, so it's a really good option for when you're feeling extra hungry or you want to eat with a large company. I think I will be returning here as I liked the quality and taste of their food but probably will ask to get the platter without the salad. read more

So tasty! Had a family meal there recently and was delighted by each first bite of each dish that arrived at our table. The shaami kebabs, both chicken and beef, were tender, juicy, and flavourful. The chaplee kebab was even more flavourful and was cooked to perfection, unlike other places that overdo them. The eggplant korma was delectable, award winning, superb! A few of us dropped by here last night for some food before a movie. It's not my first time here and it definitely won't be my last. I've had all the kabobs here and they are all delicious. My favourite are the chicken kabobs but they're all very good. They're cooked perfectly inside and out. All the platters come with salad, rice with the kabobs on top and bread. The bread is made there and really good. Remember to ask for some hot sauce. It reminds me of a salsa but is very tasty. My friends ordered the lamb shank which is a monster portion size and another friend ordered the tandoori chicken which seemed like a whole chicken. I was later told that it was half a chicken. call me old fashioned but I like it when my food is cooked after I place my order - that is what happens here - it takes a while but I think it's worth the wait - they don't care if you are in a rush that's how they operate - take it or leave it!! and I like that :) You can order here your choice of meats (chicken, lamb, beef) on a skewer or served on a bed of mildly fragrant and tasty basmati rice along with lettuce, cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes and white sauce - also comes with afghani bread (kinda like Indian naan but no oil or butter on it and dry) it's kinda hard has the texture of a baguette but very tasty. Went here for a birthday dinner and the food was delicious but I wouldn't recommend the family deal if your family consists of hungry men! I think my partner felt like the portion was lacking. The salad you also get with the meal deal for family is too small... With that being said, the food itself was really good. I really enjoyed the style of rice, the seating, and the two lovely waitresses. I ate here for lunch with my coworkers - apparently, this is the best kabob in Ottawa! I couldn't be sure, since this was my first experience with Afghan food. We walked in to an empty restaurant, went up to the counter to order, and sat down at a table... a few minutes later, I was chowing down on some beef tikka ... rice, salad, beef, and naan. The beef was good! Didn't care much for the salad dressing. But I liked the naan! And the rice was rice. I was really stuffed afterwards, and I couldn't even finish it all. I'll definitely be trying more Afghan food in the future. It's got potential! I just need to try more to figure out what I like best. Perhaps my biggest complaint about Salang Kabob House was that it was some awkward quasi-fast-food style, where you order at the counter, pick up the food when it's done, and then go up and pay. Stopped by here for the second time today and had a great meal. I ordered the beef tikka platter with naan and salad. I had a green tea while i waited and then took my meal down to Britannia bay to eat. They cook it fresh so it takes about 15 minutes. The restaurant is kept very clean and decorated with some nice old pictures of Afghanistan. The beef was really nicely marinated and the salad was fresh with lettuce cucumbers and tomatoes. No complaints here i would come back again for sure. Afghan food is an interesting taste experience as it uses a couple of different spices from the Indian food. I have been to this kabob house twice now and ordered different dishes each time. As the name suggests you can order pretty much any kind of meat in kabob form. Each dish comes with its respective kabob with rice and naan bread on the side. They also offer quite a few sides that looks delicious. Over all the food quality is darn good, specially the meat. I generally don't care much about side salads and what not. My main interest is the kabob, and the naan both of which I enjoyed thoroughly. read more

BF had a coupon to order take-out from Salang Kabob House last Friday. He ordered online around 5h20pm and we picked up at 6pm. Our order was for 2 butter chickens with 2 naans. The naans were included in the price of the butter chicken. The butter chicken was creamy and just a little spicy, the perfect amount of spice in my opinion. The chicken was perfectly cooked and tender. The naans were nothing spectacular, standard size but delicious none the less. We ate at home so I cannot comment on the establishment. Hubby and I have placed orders many times! I love the butter chicken. It comes with naan and honestly, you don't even need a side with it. Just dip your bread in the sauce ... mmmhh mmmh good! Excellent food. We ordered the lamb shank and a combo plate to go. The lamb shank was amazing - lots of juicy sauce and lots of rice to go with it. I love rice and this was fantastic. We also liked the naan which is different from Indian naan. We also got a qorma that came with the combo. We chose beef and it was delicious and different. The grilled meats were juicy and flavourful. Would like to know more about the sauce that was served with the meals. It had a bit of spice and vinegar and was delicious. I now drive by there on my way to and from work and will definitely be going in for more. I don't really love iceberg lettuce salad but I suppose that is what people are used to. I went there for dinner with some friends, and apparently it had been recently renovated! I totally saw that. It was clean and spacious. I have yet to find some seriously good Afghan cuisine in Ottawa. I thought that this would be the place but it did not measure up unfortunately. I expected it to be much better based on glowing reviews from my own friends but it fell flat for me. It is okay food, nothing great. The salad - chunks of romaine, onion, tomato and cucumber. I don't know about you, but I like to be able to have more than one vegetable on my fork when eating a salad. Each piece should not require more than one mouthful either. It begged for a finer dice, something I have gotten at other Afghan establishments. I ordered the chicken breast kabob plate with the garlic cheese Naan and my bill alone came to $26 ish total. I find that insanely over priced for what I ordered, which is another reason this place lost a star for me. When it's great food, I never mind the price tag because I know I am getting something good. When it's average then I just don't understand. The man at the cash was pretty nice and answered all questions we had about the menu. During Ramadan they were offering dates for those who were fasting which I always think is a nice touch. My chicken was okay, I have had way better. I ended up only having my chicken skewer ( 5 pcs) and leaving the rice and salad basically untouched besides a few bites. The salad in the box was lacking vegetables that would be my only complaint that it wasn't presented in a way that was appetizing. Sssoooooo much food. The meat platter is the bomb, as is the butter chicken and the lamb. They apparently screwed up the naan and then made us another batch. Both batches tasted delicious to me, though. So no complaints. They were the hit of the party. This cozy, bright restaurant serves delicious Afghan food at excellent prices. The owner was really rude and was angry at the poor waitress because she made a small mistake by giving a big portion of fries to my friend instead of a small portion of fries. All of this attitude in front of other customers is really unprofessional. My friend gave $4 tips but we were not sure that the owner was about to give it to that very same waitress.
