Palak paneer, paneer in butter tomato sauce, rice and naan!
    Anna C.

I really enjoyed our meal ! We were seated right away, service was fast and attentive. Since the owners are from South India there are alot of vegetarian options on the menu. I went for the paneer in a butter tomato sauce and palak paneer. Both dishes were delicious and a big enough portion. Each dish comes with rice and a naan, which was authentic and delicious. Next time I'm in Ottawa, I hope to try their lunch buffet!

Was visiting the parents in Ottawa and had a craving for Indian food. My parents suggested trying this new place. I was pleasantly surprised! Try the beef stuffed Naan. It's crispy and the spice is just perfect. I'll be back here again the next time I visit. I heard they do buffet for lunch on weekends - I'll definitely want to try that.

Not at all authentic and very small portions for the price. No taste or flavour and overall a negative experience.

I got the BBQ chicken leg, kebab and fries combo. The price listed on the menu was $14.99 but I was charged $17.99 but since I was tired and hungry, I didn't realize it until I was driving home. They didn't give me a receipt. Maybe it was an honest mistake or maybe they raised their prices and haven't updated their menu. I personally feel that $17.99 is too much for the quality and quantity of the food I received, even in today's climate of through the roof inflation. The wait was about 15 minutes. They did offer me some water while I waited, so I thought that was a nice gesture. When the young guy brought me my food (just a styrofoam box in a bag), I asked "the combo comes with a drink, right?" And he pointed at the older guy at the cash register and said I had to ask him. So I went over and asked the older guy if I can pick my drink, and he opened the fridge and gave me a small container of sauce. I thanked him and asked him if the combo came with a drink. He shook his head. Then I pointed at the menu which clearly states the combos come with a canned drink. Then he instructed the younger guy to get me a drink and said "he'll get it for you." I got a can of iced tea, but it felt like an ordeal to get to that point. The container felt really light, but it was very thermodynamically hot and smelled good. The chicken leg was moist and tender and had a nice spicy kick to it. It tasted like chicken tandoori and was the best part of the meal. The kebab was ok but was a bit gritty and tasted more of filler than meat. The fries were unremarkable. However the quantity of fries was minimal. In fact, the quantity of the entire meal was minimal. The green yogurt based sauce good. A bit creamy and a bit herbal. I'm not a fan of styrofoam packaging, both for health and environmental reasons. At least they lined the bottom of the container with aluminum foil, so less of the hot food is touching the styrofoam and potentially leaching chemicals into the food. The inside of the restaurant is nice for a fast food type joint. There are some cool paintings on the walls. Pre-pandemic this would have been a two-star experience for me, but times right now are tough for all, so I try to be more forgiving, so I'm going to say three stars for my experience. Your experience may differ.

If you are looking for a different option to Indian Food then give Bawarchee Pakistani food a try. The restaurant has a fast food feel to the place, so not fancy. Salang Kabob House has been on my list of places to try for some time now, so I was thrilled when I saw that they had a BOGO (buy one get one free) special on UberEats. It was $19.99 BOGO for a Mixed Shami Platter. So this is what I got. Each platter came with a ground chicken kabob, a ground beef kabob, rice, salad and naan. It was a lot of food and a great deal. I enjoyed the chicken shami, but I found the beef shami a bit gamey. The kabobs had a good flavour to them. The rice was soft and fluffy and nicely seasoned, but a little bit oily for my tastes. The salad was iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and red onions. Vegetables were fresh and crisp. The salad came with a spicy red sauce, which I liked, and a creamy dressing, which I didn't use. The naan was tasty and I appreciated that it didn't have pesky sesame seeds sprinkled on it like some other places. I ordered for pickup and the food was ready in about 15-20 minutes. Pickup was quick and efficient. The restaurant has lots of seating inside. There's free parking available in front of the restaurant. The parking is shared with neighbouring businesses. (102)

Rounding up from 3.5 stars…read more I got the Sultani Platter, with came with one tikka and one shami kabob, rice, salad, and naan. I chose chicken tikka and beef shami. I also upgraded to qabulli rice instead of just regular, and Salang salad instead of regular. I wanted to try the Qabulli rice because it's Afghanistan's national dish. It had the addition of julienned carrots and sultana raisins, and I believe it typically has sliced almonds as well, but this one didn't. The Salang salad had the addition of feta and kalamata olives, along with the iceberg and romaine Lettuce, cucumber, tomato, red onion, and pickled pepper. The platter had some weight to it! The salad came with both ranch and Greek dressing. They were fine, though I wish there was some other house dressing. The chunks of feta were great, softer than I expected and less dense, less salty. All in all, the salad wasn't anything special, but I did appreciate the fresh component to the dish. I'm not usually a fan of chicken breast, but the chicken was very moist and flavourful. Beef shami is always a safe bet for me. This one was a little more done/drier and saltier than I would've liked, but still good and the flavour was there. Both had the grill flavour that I enjoy. The tomato chutney that came with it was nice. It was almost like a fresh salsa but not chunky, and with a little spicy kick to it. The kabuli pulao (though they spell it "qabulli" rice) was tasty. They were very generous with the raisins and I wasn't big on the sweetness. The carrots were cooked and tasted a bit sweet to me also, but not sure if it was just the raisins cooked with them. Maybe the almonds would've helped cut the sweetness. I really liked the basmati rice itself, which was flavoured. It was great to try the qabulli rice, but I think I'll get the regular rice next time. The plain naan was good, nice a fresh, crispier on the outside and doughier on the inside. If you've never had Afghan naan before, it's not the same as Indian naan. Indian naan is thinner, flakier, and larger, whereas Afghan naan is thicker, denser. I do wish I had something to dip it in or had it buttered or something, but it's great bread and I had already filled up on the rice, so I actually split it and saved the other half to use in a sandwich later. My husband got the beef shami platter, which came with two shamis, and an upgrade to garlic naan. I tried some of the naan, and while good, I found salty. Maybe they used garlic salt? I also got the ayran/doogh to drink and the firnee for dessert. Doogh is like a salted yogurt drink that I've only tried maybe once in the past, so I thought I'd try it again. It was okay, but I couldn't finish the whole bottle. The firnee was homemade and very tasty. Not at all as sweet as I expected, and I loved how creamy/milky it was, and the crushed cardamom and finely chopped pistachios on top. It was perfect. Will definitely order from here again.

The chicken in the Chicken Biryani tasted too gamey to me, maybe it was a bit old. Loved the chicken samosa though. So New Desi Zaiqa Restaurant opened up in Carlingwood Mall on September 21, 2023. They are where Cobrie International Cuisine used to be (Carlingwood Family Restaurant, before that). It's a sit-down restaurant (as opposed to the food court offerings). They offer a la carte, buffet and takeout. I saw that their lunch buffet is $17.99. I stopped by to grab some takeout for my husband and I. I wanted to try a variety of items. I initially wanted to try the bun kebab, but they said it wasn't available. So I ended up getting the Chicken Biryani ($11.99) and the Bihari Boti Paratha Roll ($12.99). Then I noticed they had an Iftar Special ($12.99) which contained a variety of different appetizers (my visit was during the month of Ramadan). It looked great but it wasn't yet sunset. I asked if the Iftar Special was only available after sunset and they said no, I could get it now. I was thrilled. I really enjoyed the Iftar Special. It contained a chicken samosa, a vegetable spring roll, 2 vegetable pakora, 2 aloo pakora, a dahi bhalla, some chana chaat, fruit chaat and 3 dates. The chicken samosa was full of ground chicken. The pastry was like a spring roll wrapper. I like this pastry better than the more ubiquitous thicker samosa pastry. I really enjoyed the samosa. The vegetable spring roll was unremarkable. It was crispy, but the filling was lacking. The vegetable pakora were delicious. The aloo pakora were basically slices of potatoes, battered and deep-fried. The chana chaat was unremarkable. The Dahi Bhalla was much sweeter than I expected, but it was good. The fruit chaat was essentially a fruit salad in custard. I enjoyed it. I did not like the Chicken Biryani. I found the chicken too gamey. It might have been old. The dish came with 2 drumsticks. That was the extent of the meat. The rice was a bit in the oily/greasy side. The Bihari Boti Paratha Roll was delicious though. It was tender marinated slices of beef with tomatoes, lettuce, red onions and sauce wrapped in a paratha. Very tasty. Service was courteous and welcoming. The wait was about 20-25 minutes. The dine-in area looked nice. Lots of free parking in the mall parking lot. I would return to try more paratha rolls and their appetizer items. (55)

I called in my order and they said it would be 20 minutes. I arrived after 30 minutes and my food was packed and ready to go. I ordered the Chicken Kebab Platter ($11.99). It consisted of 2 kebabs, lots of rice, and a bit of iceberg lettuce topped with a few slices of cucumbers. I also got a small container of raita. The kebabs were tasty and had the slightest spicy kick. They were so flavourful. They tasted like ground chicken with some sort of pulse like lentils or chickpeas, ground up vegetables like carrots and onions, and lots of spices. I enjoyed them. The rice was soft and fluffy and had a strong cumin aroma. There was a lot of rice. It was a combination of long grain basmati rice and broken pieces of rice. I don't know if this is the style, but there was lots of broken rice. The lettuce and cucumbers had a creamy dressing drizzled on top. There were a few pieces of fried onions as well. Overall, it was a really filling meal, tasty and also great value. Although I would have liked a bit more salad and less rice. Service was courteous and efficient. The restaurant is in a converted old house. It's where The Green Papaya was, and prior to that Mandarin Court Restaurant. There is free parking on site in their small private parking lot. There are a few stairs at the entrance. I am looking forward to returning and trying Haleem for the first time as I saw it on their menu :) Review #22 (2025)
