Bawarchee - Chicken Achari .... Awesome!

I got some takeout at Bawarchee after a long day at work and overall the food was ok, but I was…read moreovercharged by $3 and they almost forgot my drink until I reminded them and had to show them on the menu that the combo came with a drink. I got the BBQ chicken leg, kebab and fries combo. The price listed on the menu was $14.99 but I was charged $17.99 but since I was tired and hungry, I didn't realize it until I was driving home. They didn't give me a receipt. Maybe it was an honest mistake or maybe they raised their prices and haven't updated their menu. I personally feel that $17.99 is too much for the quality and quantity of the food I received, even in today's climate of through the roof inflation. The wait was about 15 minutes. They did offer me some water while I waited, so I thought that was a nice gesture. When the young guy brought me my food (just a styrofoam box in a bag), I asked "the combo comes with a drink, right?" And he pointed at the older guy at the cash register and said I had to ask him. So I went over and asked the older guy if I can pick my drink, and he opened the fridge and gave me a small container of sauce. I thanked him and asked him if the combo came with a drink. He shook his head. Then I pointed at the menu which clearly states the combos come with a canned drink. Then he instructed the younger guy to get me a drink and said "he'll get it for you." I got a can of iced tea, but it felt like an ordeal to get to that point. The container felt really light, but it was very thermodynamically hot and smelled good. The chicken leg was moist and tender and had a nice spicy kick to it. It tasted like chicken tandoori and was the best part of the meal. The kebab was ok but was a bit gritty and tasted more of filler than meat. The fries were unremarkable. However the quantity of fries was minimal. In fact, the quantity of the entire meal was minimal. The green yogurt based sauce good. A bit creamy and a bit herbal. I'm not a fan of styrofoam packaging, both for health and environmental reasons. At least they lined the bottom of the container with aluminum foil, so less of the hot food is touching the styrofoam and potentially leaching chemicals into the food. The inside of the restaurant is nice for a fast food type joint. There are some cool paintings on the walls. Pre-pandemic this would have been a two-star experience for me, but times right now are tough for all, so I try to be more forgiving, so I'm going to say three stars for my experience. Your experience may differ.

If you are looking for a different option to Indian Food then give Bawarchee Pakistani food a try. The restaurant has a fast food feel to the place, so not fancy. Salang Kabob House has been on my list of places to try for some time now, so I was thrilled when I saw that they had a BOGO (buy one get one free) special on UberEats. It was $19.99 BOGO for a Mixed Shami Platter. So this is what I got. Each platter came with a ground chicken kabob, a ground beef kabob, rice, salad and naan. It was a lot of food and a great deal. I enjoyed the chicken shami, but I found the beef shami a bit gamey. The kabobs had a good flavour to them. The rice was soft and fluffy and nicely seasoned, but a little bit oily for my tastes. The salad was iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and red onions. Vegetables were fresh and crisp. The salad came with a spicy red sauce, which I liked, and a creamy dressing, which I didn't use. The naan was tasty and I appreciated that it didn't have pesky sesame seeds sprinkled on it like some other places. I ordered for pickup and the food was ready in about 15-20 minutes. Pickup was quick and efficient. The restaurant has lots of seating inside. There's free parking available in front of the restaurant. The parking is shared with neighbouring businesses. (102)

Rounding up from 3.5 stars…read more I got the Sultani Platter, with came with one tikka and one shami kabob, rice, salad, and naan. I chose chicken tikka and beef shami. I also upgraded to qabulli rice instead of just regular, and Salang salad instead of regular. I wanted to try the Qabulli rice because it's Afghanistan's national dish. It had the addition of julienned carrots and sultana raisins, and I believe it typically has sliced almonds as well, but this one didn't. The Salang salad had the addition of feta and kalamata olives, along with the iceberg and romaine Lettuce, cucumber, tomato, red onion, and pickled pepper. The platter had some weight to it! The salad came with both ranch and Greek dressing. They were fine, though I wish there was some other house dressing. The chunks of feta were great, softer than I expected and less dense, less salty. All in all, the salad wasn't anything special, but I did appreciate the fresh component to the dish. I'm not usually a fan of chicken breast, but the chicken was very moist and flavourful. Beef shami is always a safe bet for me. This one was a little more done/drier and saltier than I would've liked, but still good and the flavour was there. Both had the grill flavour that I enjoy. The tomato chutney that came with it was nice. It was almost like a fresh salsa but not chunky, and with a little spicy kick to it. The kabuli pulao (though they spell it "qabulli" rice) was tasty. They were very generous with the raisins and I wasn't big on the sweetness. The carrots were cooked and tasted a bit sweet to me also, but not sure if it was just the raisins cooked with them. Maybe the almonds would've helped cut the sweetness. I really liked the basmati rice itself, which was flavoured. It was great to try the qabulli rice, but I think I'll get the regular rice next time. The plain naan was good, nice a fresh, crispier on the outside and doughier on the inside. If you've never had Afghan naan before, it's not the same as Indian naan. Indian naan is thinner, flakier, and larger, whereas Afghan naan is thicker, denser. I do wish I had something to dip it in or had it buttered or something, but it's great bread and I had already filled up on the rice, so I actually split it and saved the other half to use in a sandwich later. My husband got the beef shami platter, which came with two shamis, and an upgrade to garlic naan. I tried some of the naan, and while good, I found salty. Maybe they used garlic salt? I also got the ayran/doogh to drink and the firnee for dessert. Doogh is like a salted yogurt drink that I've only tried maybe once in the past, so I thought I'd try it again. It was okay, but I couldn't finish the whole bottle. The firnee was homemade and very tasty. Not at all as sweet as I expected, and I loved how creamy/milky it was, and the crushed cardamom and finely chopped pistachios on top. It was perfect. Will definitely order from here again.

The Peshawari chicken was the best item, with amazing flavorful curry sauce. Tuesday chicken didn't appear as soft and tender to me as dark mat should be. The beef sheesh was average, it was dry and hard to chew. The lamb biryani was same, some basic biryani rice mixed with dry cold lamb. We got some naan too, which were really big and thick, but taste wise was fine. The mango mojito didn't seem to be handmade drink, rather I felt it was a mango flavor soda. The restaurant wasn't busy, only couple of other groups were in with us. There was only one waitresses attending all the tables. We had a hard time getting hold of her, as most of the she was in the kitchen, or occupied at plating other empty tables. We just started walking over to get our stuff. My brother was excited to discover that Pak India was having 25% off for lunch during Ramadan. I guess they need to boost sales during daylight during this time. People who don't fast can take advantage! He ordered a bunch of dishes for us: Onion Bhaiji ($5.99), Chicken Pakora ($8.99), Naan ($2.99), Chicken Biryani ($17.99), Butter Chicken ($16.99), Beef Curry ($17.99), Lamb Chana Daal ($17.99), Malai Kofta ($14.99) and basmati rice ($5.99). I went with him to the restaurant to pick up the food. The Onion Bhaiji wasn't as crispy as I had hoped and we found a long black hair partially embedded in one of the pieces o_O People working in the kitchen need to wear hairnets! Luckily, none of the other dishes contained hair. The Chicken Pakora were tasty, but were more like chicken tenders. They were chicken breast strips battered and deep-fried. The Chicken Pakora I've had in the past (in Toronto) were chopped up chicken mixed with batter and rolled into balls and deep-fried. I was expecting something different but I still enjoyed the dish. The naan was soft and fluffy. The basmati rice was nicely cooked. The Chicken Biryani had a decent amount of chicken pieces in it. It was ok, but not as flavourful as I've had elsewhere. The Butter Chicken was phenomenal. One of the best butter chicken dishes I've had. The sauce was so smooth and creamy and I enjoyed the chunks of breast meat. The Beef Curry and Lamb Chana Daal were both incredibly oily. Look at my pictures, so much oil! I liked that the meat was tender and boneless and not gamey tasting, but I couldn't get over the excessive amount of oil. I did like that the Daal wasn't too mushy. The Malai Kofta were too mushy, they weren't firm enough. Although the sauce they were in was tasty. I'm glad I got to try this restaurant. The regular prices are a bit on the high side in my opinion, but I would consider getting the Butter Chicken, Chicken Pakora and naan again if they had another sale. The dine-in space is nice. The atmosphere is casual. Staff were courteous. The cashier almost didn't give my brother the 25% off discount. He noticed she didn't and asked about it. She at first said it was only for the buffet, but then said she'd ask her dad. She called him over and he confirmed, the discount applied to my brother's order and he corrected the bill. He was nice about it, so we were good. Lots of free parking in the plaza parking lot, but the spots are a bit tight and awkward. I don't love the parking situation at this plaza, but at least it's available and free. (51)

The way I see it - the more I learn, the more I grow and the more I can share with others so that we can all grow and celebrate diversity together! Tonight, I had my first ever Pakistani food experience and it was a flavourful and colourful one! As soon as I walked through the doors of Khokha, a resto that recently opened up in Barrhaven, I was greeted by the wonderful scent of spices and a colourful vibe from the murals on their walls. I felt so welcomed and it felt so familiar despite me never trying this cuisine before. I ordered the Khokha Roll - a handmade flat bread filled with chapli (beef) kabab, Khokha sauce, onions and cilantro. All the flavours worked so well together. I also got their Mango Milkshake (lassi), which was nice and creamy. It helped balance the spices of the Khokha Roll. For dessert, I got the Carrot Halwa - cardamom flavoured traditional carrot pudding served with nuts. It was yummy and reminded me a little of carrot cake! I've also tried their Biryani and it's delicious as it is colourful! Have you tried out Khokha yet?
