I came here for lunch for the butter chicken and naan bread. I've had butter chicken all over the city, and it varies from sweet to super spicy. India cafe's butter chicken is not spicey but it's also not good. The sauce was incredibly fake and processed, there was no thickness to it like you expect from a curry, and I suspect is fake packaged butter chicken sauce as the store has an entire wall dedicated to Pataks jarred sauces. This place is great for some no-frills Indian food. If it's ever raining, stop by and have their unreal onion bhajis and chai. The place is small but neat and quite cozy. If you're looking for a rare cheap meal in the ByWard Market and don't mind sacrificing quality, India Cafe may be a good option. You can get a lot of curry for cheap, but the taste isn't phenomenal. They use way too much salt and the ingredients don't taste very fresh. This place is mainly used for take-out, but if you're eating in, there isn't much seating room and definitely not enough to accommodate a group larger than four. The worst Indian food I've seen and tasted. Avoid. It is a monkey operaton, not a cafe or a restaurant. They only survive because enough unlucky tourists walk in accidentally. Order took over 70mins to arrive even after the man on the phone confirmed that it would be here in 45mins. The Dhal soup had no flavour and tasted bad. The chicken tikka masala was good but the rice needed more spices or at least salt. It's cheap and its downtown. I wouldn't recommend delivery but I might order for pickup again soon read more

Walked by this place a number of times in the market and finally decided to grab a quick lunch. I ordered the butter chicken with a side of naan bread. It is served with rice and salad. While there was nothing at all wrong with the food, I was very underwhelmed with the flavor, have to say it was pretty bland compared to what you would typically get in a restaurant setting. The naan bread however was fantastic and a generous portion, would have like to see them offer a garlic naan as it would have added a bit of flavor to an otherwise bland offering. read more

we stopped here for a quick cheap bite and yeah it was quick and cheap (esp comparing to other byward market locations). but the quality is not the best and I wouldn't come there again. samosas very somewhat soggy and veggie kebab didn't look appetizing. another thing to mention - even tough they have a sign upfront - that vegetarian options are available it doesn't look like the staff knows what vegetarian food is. one of us ordered a soup double checking if it's vegetarian (which was confirmed by the staff), but it ended up having chicken in it. also there is a limited seating but we did fit a group of 8 people by moving tables together and basically taking over the whole place. read more

Great hole in the wall place with generous portions and ood food at a very reasonable price. Owned and run by a nice Bangladeshi-Canadian family. I come here all the time for lunch. The decor isn't anything spectacular, but the food makes up for it. Nice views of the colourful market stalls immediatelt in front during the summer. read more

Hi. I went here to India Cafe with a Big Yellow sign and the words INDIA CAFE in Red about 2 months ago for the first time! Its right in the Market Square so its convenient if you're Down town. I said huh, looks like it might be good and decided to try it. I went in Ordered then noticed I got a much smaller amount of Chicken then the previous two Customers. So I decided to ask one of the Customers, hey ummm if you don't mind me asking is that the Butter Chicken? He said yes it is! I said, have you been here before is that the regular portion size? He said yes. I then said ummm excuse me sir, could you please put a little bit more on my plate please? I just asked this Gentleman and he get MUCH MORE, like twice as much Chicken. I said are you paying any extra for yours sir? He said nope! Justttt $13.50! I said ok thanks so much you were help full. He said sureeeee no problem. The man Old Indian man LITERALLY WAITED UNTIL the other Male Customer had left and then stared@ me for about 5 mins. I finally said sir, helloooo, hi, is everything ok? Are you going to serve me? He said what you want? I said, uhhhh, well it looks like you already started my order. Is that my order? I pointed to MY order which he had already started filling. He smiled and didn't answer he just said WHAT YOU WANT AGAIN. I said, ok I already told you what I want. Do you not remember? He said WHAT YOU WANT. I said would you like me to tell you again? He said yes tell me again. So I told him again. He proceeded to put a bit more Rice and that was it. He LITERALLY YELLED, Quote; ''I don'tttt want hear any Stories.'' ''I am here 14 years, you only one complain, only you complain.'' I said ok no problem, I will pay and then I will go. But there is Food on the bottom of this machine. Can you please wipe it off? He said nooooooo food, no foooood you lying, you lying. I said what?! I'm not Lying! LOOK! There is Fooooood here sir. I showed him the bottom of the machine. No response. I said OK Sir, I'm not quite sure what's going on here, but if you're not going to Wipe off the machine can you please give me a Napkin, I will wipe it off myself. He said you want wiping it? I said yes please. He took a Napkin and wiped it himself. He wiped where the buttons are. Which is fine, I said thanks but that's not where the Food is. I said here look and turned the machine over and pointed to the food. The quickly wiped it and said there no food...you don't see any food. I said yes thank you, that's because you wiped it off. He laughed and said nooooooooo, never any food. I said, are you saying there was never any food on the bottom of the machine? He said yes, never any food on machine. You Lying. I said look sir, can I please see the Napkin you just used to Wipe the bottom of the machine? He handed it to me. I said LOOK! This is the food you wiped off the bottom of the machine. But the man was EXTREMELY Rude and Abrasive. I will usually put up with a little bit of Rudeness if the Food is good. But this man was a Real Inappropriate Jerk!
