We've ordered from Harir Kabab House a few times, especially when we're craving Afghan cuisine. This is where I've had Afghan food for the first time, though it's always been for delivery after discovering it during the pandemic and I haven't had the chance to visit in person.
My go-tos have been the beef shami, manto, and mango lassi. I usually order the kid's beef shami meal because I'm greedy and always want other stuff. It comes with one grilled beef shami skewer (lean ground beef with spices) instead of two, with rice and salad. The salad doesn't have any dressing but that never bothers me. I could eat pounds of the rice! It's "plain" rice as per their menu, but actually has some saffron in it and is so addictive. It's perfect with the beef and the yogurt dip I got on the side.
This was the first time I've ordered most-o-mousir, which I think is actually a Persian dish, that is made of yogurt and shallots. They gave me the most khyar instead, which is also a yogurt dip but with cucumbers and herbs. I wasn't upset about it, but it was a little too salty for my taste. When eaten with the beef shami and rice, however, it was just fine. I also used it as a dressing for the salad and dip for the bolani, which turned out great. Bolani is a stuffed flatbread with green onion and some herbs. It was a little spicy and the most khyar was great to dip it in and help cool it down (if you needed).
Ashak and manto are both dumplings served with yogurt, tomato sauce, and split peas. Ashak is vegetarian, filled with leeks, and manto is filled with beef and onion and topped with dried mint. The last time we got them we ordered one of each but we got both manto. This time we ordered one of each but got both ashak. Not a big deal because they're both delicious, but I wish we could have both at once. They also came with a little chunk of I think lamb, so warning for anyone who's vegetarian.
The mango lassi wasn't as sweet this time around since I asked for no honey or any extra sweetener. It came in a styrofoam container instead of a cup, so I just poured it into one when I got it. Loved the little slivered almonds in it and the little zing of lassi instead of just a regular mango smoothie.
My husband's Sultani kabab meal, potato wedges, and soft drink didn't come when our order was delivered. We called the restaurant to ask and they had accidentally missed the second page of the order. They were super apologetic, made it immediately, and delivered it themselves instead of the hassle of going through the third party. My husband wasn't too upset about it since they were so nice and he really enjoyed his meal. He loved the grilled chicken breast, beef shami, and rice so much, and the potatoes were perfectly crispy. We also appreciated them going above and beyond and delivering it themselves.
We didn't get exactly what we asked for, but the food was so good and we'll definitely keep ordering from them! read more
