I have gone to multiple hairstylist over the last three years due to the lack of professional skills such; as integrity, communication, empathy, & overpriced hairstyles. prior to Covid I tried to get an appointment but she was totally booked and then Cove it happened and I could never get in. now I saw her at my People's market back in August was able to make an immediate connection and she booked my appointment on the spot. She was punctual, sanitizing practices were on point, parking is good, quality of products is top notch, not to mention the vibes of good energy that radiates throughout her business and her hands. This by far has been one of the best haircare experiences that I have had in years being that my hair was dull, damaged & mis- shaped from another stylist 6wks ago. Did a horrible job on my hair messed it up bad. I have to wait 3 months before I can get it. Knew I was going out of town instead of saying she didn't know how to do it took my money and messed up my hair. Very disappointed First of all I am new to the region so I was trying several salons. Yes I went back twice because it wasn't done right the first time nor was it done right the second time. I came back A week later because that's when I was scheduled. And as far as going back there that was never my intention. I will continue to look for someone who knows how to do Geri curls. read more

Oh goodness I thought that I wrote this review after my last visit to Chadowboxx but it seems not! Oh well I can tell you all of the things now. (If you don't want to hear me babble on you can skip to the last paragraph and I'll sum it up in a more tidy fashion!) I originally set my appointment with Charlisa Jackson after reading several positive reviews I had found online and calling in to ask about whether or not she thought she could install a full sew-in weave on me. I had called around to a couple of places looking for a new stylist, after having lost my old one when they moved across country, and was told by two different women that caucasian hair couldnt take braiding because it was too fine. They didn't want me! I am no stranger to weave installation on this snow white head of mine, so I was aware that this information was incorrect. By the time I called Charlisa I was beginning to be frightened I wouldn't be able to find anyone to take my money! Quite to the contrary, she patiently listened to my anxious babbling and waved away any worry I had. Her expertise was evident from the start, she fixed my hotmessness in no time (seriously she works fast), and I ran around looking flawless for a FULL EIGHT WEEKS before I needed to pop in and have some hair maintenance done. The point is: I have never in my weavexistence found a salon that I came to cherish so much in such a brief period of time. Charlisa, Eris, And Devita are warm and personable and the salon is always filled with laughter and an air of relaxation and pampering. I love this place, and to be honest, I feel so comfortable there that it sucks that I feel a four is more appropriate, right now. I haven't had a full, huge appointment yet, because I came to Portland with my hair super short and we are currently working on growing it out. In that, Charlisa has been amazing, and really encouraging about what we need to do and how we need to maintain it so I can get to the length and ultimately the new style I'm after. The only reason, and I mean ONLY reason, I am giving Chadowboxx a 4 star right now is because both of my appointments have been running extremely late. I arrive right on time, sometimes a bit before if I don't get lost, and to wait for an hour after my appointment time is really taxing when I have other things to do. The last time, we had to cut my color extremely short because I had another appointment scheduled and was actually late. I will say that despite that, I will continue to go back. I know that this salon is the one for me, and I love the plans we have. I trust Charlisa implicitly with my hair already. I'm sure this review will be a five, eventually, but it should be noted to give yourself a lot of time, just in case she's up to something tricky before your appointment and it runs over. read more

So in my previous review I gave Chadowboxx 2 stars... Now I'm giving 5! "Why" you ask?... After reading my review, Charlisa (the owner) called me to personally apologize for my experience. She asked if I would be willing to come in for a complementary service because that is not the standard she holds her business up to. I was really impressed by Charlisa's professionalism and she explained that she would be the one doing my hair. Although hesitant at first, I decided to give Chadowboxx a 2nd chance. GREAT DECISION!!! When I arrived at the salon it was only Charlisa and I. She gave me her full attention and really took time applying color to my fro. I was hungry and she even offered to pick me up something from the restaurant across the street while I waiting for my color to lift. The color came out amazing. I had dyed my hair darker with a few highlights over a year ago and my new light color was a total transformation that I instantly fell in love with. She also tinted my eyebrows and they are BEAUTIFUL!! She was very knowledgeable about natural hair and even recommended a few great product (I tried them out at the salon and I want to buy them all now..). When coloring was finished, Charlisa put in a quick twist out and sat me under the dryer for about 15 minutes so I wouldn't leave with wet hair and I scheduled my nest appointment! On Thursday morning, Charlisa gave me the magical mane of my dreams. You know those photos you lust after- of thick, lustrous, shiny hair- that seem unattainable? The kind of hair photos that make you green with envy? Thanks to Chadowboxx, they are within your reach. When I set up the appointment, Charlisa was very thorough to find out exactly what I wanted, asking me a lot of questions over the phone to make sure I would be satisfied. I got 3 bundles of hair in 18", 20" and 22" (I wanted long layers). I still had my previous extensions in (that had been done in a different location) and she didn't charge me extra to remove them. She made sure to give my scalp a lot of love before she did the new braids- scalp treatment, a massage with a silicone brush, Awapuhi deep conditioner- the works. She also darkened my hair to blend better with the extensions, and it's never been softer (she left out some on the top and it's virtually seamless). The hair she provides is that good quality s***. Silky and easily detangled, can be reused multiple times. If I had paid for my own three bundles of hair (of much lesser quality), I would have paid twice as much including the install price. Let her provide the hair, unless you are incredibly savvy. Pro tip: LET HER DO HER THING. I know you've been wronged in the past and you don't trust anyone with your hair (let's be real- who does? It can be pretty scary out there) but she knows what she's doing. Her installation is "a little OCD," as she put it, which is a great trait for a stylist to have because- and I can vouch for this- it's guaranteed perfection. Not only does she do a flawless installation, she's just fun to hang out with. Conversation with her feels like you're talking to an old friend, comfortable and friendly. She offered a lot of useful tips for care and maintenance, shaped the layers neatly and added a few waves to blend it before sending me off. There may have been happy tears in my eyes when I looked in the mirror- I've never been even half as elated with a past hairstyle and I didn't know it was possible for moviestar, hair-commercial hair to be mine. In summary: Charlisa is a hair genius. A wizard. A brilliant godmother of extensions. If you can't tell by my relentless verbal genuflection, I can't recommend this place highly enough. I am sorry to say I did not have a good experience at Chadowboxx. I went in to get my hair braided to help grow out my bangs and as a protective style to help grow out my hair in general. Charlisa the owner did the installation. I told her in advance why I wanted braids and my goal of growing my hair out. She totally overloaded my hair, putting way to much synthetic hair in. Too much for my taste and for my hair. Because it was so heavy and too thick it became very annoying. The fraying and extreme fly-aways started after only a week despite being covered at night and using high quality braid spray. She braids out and not in, so if you've had braids you know this causes the braids to fray easily. Upon take down over half of my hair had major breakage. I literally have less than half my original thickness, and had to trim about 4-5 inches off the ends because it was so bad. Needless to say this is a huge set back in growing my hair out. I am so much worse off than when I started, a waste of time and money. Lastly I would like to mention that her policy states: " Children Chadowboxx is very fond of children. However, the salon is not necessarily the best place for them. If children are not being serviced, I do ask that you make proper childcare arrangements for them. Time at the salon should be your time of pampering and relaxation." So, I made childcare arrangements for my son for the entire day. But, she didn't. Her 5 year old son was there the entire time running around and asking questions and trying to sit in my lap. I love kids as much as the next mom, but like most moms I was looking forward to a kid free day to relax. When spending almost $300 I would expect it to be a nice day for me as the customer. Sadly it was not. She is a nice enough person but pretty much ruined my hair. :( read more

Very unprofessional shop. No regularity in scheduling and a double edged policy for clients. As expected appointments are to be upheld on time as scheduled. Several times I was asked to push back an appt. less than 5 minutes before the scheduled time, and then was cancelled on by the shop owner herself, without being presented an alternative. Charlisa initially did a great job caring for my hair until the weave I was convinced would protect my hair began to break it. Charlisa, upon cancelling my appt. (again within 5 minutes of the appt. With me at her shop and through a Facebook message) without rescheduling, told me she doesn't know what to tell me. This shop doesn't need or appreciate it's clientele. read more

I lost my last so-so stylist to a relocation and was on the lookout for a new one. I didn't want resort to an old MLK stand by that would just slap the creamy crack in my hair briefly ask me what style i wanted , juggle 3 other customers, kids running around and a full loud salon. I wanted someone that really understood hair in general. Not just how to do an up do or a relaxer. I also wanted someone who was up to date on the latest natural products, processes and styles for my hair as that's important to me. Someone who was interested in the health of my hair not just my wallet. After looking through yelp i found that someone with Charlissa. She is an AMAZING stylist! one of the best i have had. She is very knowledgeable about my (African American) hair and i love that. I can always feel relieved when im sitting in her chair that im not going end up with burns or have my hair wet to trim it. lol. She has a very in depth knowledge of the chemical make up of my type of hair and she brings out the beauty in it with her skills as a stylist. Her salon makes you feel comfortable and safe so that you'll actually enjoy your time there. I got a Keratin Blow out, which is sooo much healthier than relaxers, in May and my hair is still great. SO good that i decided to get some color for the summer yesterday. Charlissa had no problem consulting colors with me so that i choose the best one. After one application wasn't enough she took the time to get it where i wanted it. The highlights were added in just the right places and she took the time to make sure they were the color i wanted as well. My color looks AWESOME!!! I keep getting compliments on it. She killed my self confidence by ruining my hair. I'm a 4c and for once in my life I wanted have hair that shined and moved in the wind. For months, I read reviews and contact multiple natural hair stylists before I tracked down a stylist in Portland Or, and asked if she could provide the services I needed. Of course she said yes and with her reviews I made the assumption that she was true to her word. After sitting in a chair for six hours, I endured a relaxer that burned the skin off my neck, a bleaching of my hair, and then a hair dying process. She told me that my hair was going to be fine and that it would soften with time and OH if I bought some of her product that might help too - but wasn't fine. It was hard and crunchy, lifeless and burnt. My hair looked like the world's stiffest wig. When I called the stylist she told me that there was nothing she could for me, that she felt that I was having buyer's remorse and she didn't do refunds. So I spent $300.00 with Chadowbox, my hair was lifeless, my neck was killing me and she wound not help me. I went to another stylist who told me that my hair shouldn't have been processed so harshly and that she surprised it hadn't fallen out. And then I spent another 100 dollars to different stylist who had me condition my hair and then so she could set a wig on top of it. In the heat the wig did not last long and so then I spent another 100 dollars to a stylist for a deep conditioning treatment. My entire life is judged on my appearance, and I am so ashamed and embarrassed that I don't go out any more, I don't date any more. I do my best to cover my hair, go to work and try not damage my hair anymore than it is. My natural curls are gone. My whole self of self is ruined. I wouldn't have my worse enemy suffer like I do. read more

Let me just say that the only reason Ms. Charlisa did not receive 5 full stars is because of a minor scheduling issue that caused her to run about an hour behind for our appointment (but hey, it happens to the best of us).... That being said, I can't say enough about this fabulous lady! I am a Caucasian woman who, after being "butchered" at a different salon, was looking to add some length and volume to my brunette hair with some sew in extensions. I'm an extensions/weave virgin and was not sure exactly what to expect. I scheduled a consultation at Chadowboxx and was thrilled with the sincerity and professionalism with which I was treated (and just for the record, she was right on time for our consultation)! Charlisa has such a vibrant and sweet personality, and she really set my mind at ease. She answered every question I had thoroughly, and I was truly impressed with her knowledge and passion for hair! I left the consultation with a huge smile on my face, knowing I had made the right decision in choosing Chadowboxx Salon. On the day of the appointment, Charlisa was very apologetic about running behind, and got to work on my hair as soon as her other client was finished. She was so easy and fun to talk with, and before I knew it, the 2 hours it took to finish my hair just flew by. Now that the extensions are in, I will say it takes a little getting used to LOL! My hair looks sexy as hell, but my poor scalp is a bit tender. As I said, I am a weave novice and haven't had my hair braided since I was about 15 years old! I think once the ibuprofen kicks in and a few days pass, I'll get a bit more used to this feeling. All I have to say is that I have a whole new respect for those that have been weaving it up for years :P I will also admit that I'm a bit nervous that I won't get my hair to look half as good as it did when I left the salon, as it is a bit courser than my natural hair, but I'd rather have to spend a little extra effort on the weave than go around with an unflattering haircut! I had gone to the Chaddowboxx before so when I decided that I wanted to try something new, I did not think twice about scheduling an appointment. I chose to have my hair cut and styled in a short hairdo, only to walk out of the Chaddowboxx salon resembling something close to Gumbe'. The beautician had shaved half of my hair too low and left other parts too long and then overcharged me for the privilege. I was very, very disappointed in the skill of the beautician (when it came to a cut). If I had not located a barber that could undo the damage she had done I would have had to walk around for months with my Gumbe' do, until my hair grew back. Sorry to say that I will no longer be returning to the Chaddowboxx Salon. It is ok to recommend someone else if you yourself do not have the necessary skill. Looked good at first. I don't like the lace front encolsure. You have to have your hair in your face all the time or wear headbands so you don't see it. Length is good, scalp was super itchy for a week to the point t where I wanted to shave my head. Now 4 weeks in it feels like it's going to fall off my head. I am going to see how it goes at the next take down and install. That said..the service was great. Everyone was friendly and hair was pretty. Wish I could schedule appointments every 4 weeks but she's booked. Took a month to get in for my first appointment but owner made sure I was taken care of before leaving for vacation. read more

First time coming to the salon, I was greeted. The was made sure I knew I was only there because of my friend and that a favor was being done for me. Even though like everyone else I went online placed an appointment for a trim and hairstyle that was easy to manage while on the go. And the appointment was accepted. I expressed I did not like heat applied to my hair. The the washing of the hair was nice, then conditioner was nice, I thought was part of the friendliness because my friend invited me. Then I got my hair blow dried, then with my back facing away from the mirror I guess so I could talk to my friend, I did not see that she was getting ready to straighten my hair. It was not until my ear got singed that I realized she was straightening my hair. She said it was to get a better idea with what she was working with. Having been to late, I let her do my whole head. When charged, I was charged for what I DID NOT signed up for, hair trim and on the go hair style keeping my hair natural , I was charged close to $100. For a salon that is supposed to be service focused I did not feel heard, and felt appalled at the price I was charged than what I was expecting, considering how all the extra services was NOT what I had asked for. Nothing was asked in what I wanted. Not feeling comfortable in confronting my friends hairstylist. I came to this salon because of a trusted friend who has had great experiences here, she gets her hair straightened with keratin and she looks great. My hair looked very silky straight when I left. Charlisa does great with straightening hair either with keratin or a hair straightener. My opinions about my own hair did not seem to matter however. If you have curly hair I suggest finding a salon that is focused around curly hair. And respects your wishes. read more

Burn beauty has been the name of my haircare when it comes to relaxers. Charlisa was the first stylist to give me perfect results without pain. It took alot to dive back into a relaxer after 12 years of natural styles and I was nervous about scalp irritation, burning and scabs or underprocessed hair. Frankly, I was also nervous about signing up for the typical drama that goes with salon visits. Charlisa gave me options and really informed me about the available processes for natural hair-- I had no idea I had options, good ones. She is professional but also approachable and kind. I have never been more comfortable in a salon. There weren't 10 other people mid-treatment lingering around the salon. It was clean, chic and she uses high quality products and a consultation style that looks into your personality, preferences and lifestyle before taking your hair to a new place. She got my hair straight and bouncy with sheen and she went out of her way to give me new tips and real instruction and education about my hair itself and proper at-home care regimen. If you are someone who likes to go to the salon to simply get your hair done, try Chadowboxx. I have been looking for a stylist like Charlisa for a long time and now I don't have to sacrifice the health of my scalp, quality customer service or 12 hours of my precious time for the style I want.
