When someone slays your hair for the gods time and time again, she most definitely deserves recognition! I will scream it from the mountain tops, CHRISTY IS THE VERY BEST! Here's why: 1) Her personality is so refreshing, I love that there is never a dull moment with her! She keeps conversations naturally flowing and never fails to make me laugh. This is so important to me that I found someone who is positive and upbeat, especially when I have to spend a couple hours with them. 2) Christy is very informational and strives to keep the health and integrity of your hair. She explains exactly what she can do, what she cannot do, and why. She is honest about results and my hair has always turned out the way she said it would. 3) She is fast! I use to spend 5-7 hours at other salons to achieve blonde hair whereas Christy has me in and out in 2-3 hours. This may seem long to you, but trust me, her two hands are work DILIGENTLY. In that time, we have a quick conversation about the desired outcome (usually just more blonde), she then foils crazy fast, I'm under a dryer for some time, she will shampoo/condition, rinse, tone, blow dry, AND I always get a beautiful style! That is A LOT to do and she does it PERFECTLY and fast, but still PRECISE! 4) She knows how to work with asian hair. If you didn't know, asian hair is extremely difficult to lighten without over processing and damaging the hair in the process. Christy is not the stylist to go to if you want to go from black to blonde in one appointment, she will not and I repeat, WILL NOT, damage your hair in that way. I will say that she can most definitely give you the result you want (vibrant, ashy, platinum blonde hair with minimal to NO orange) but you will have to trust her and the process which will be in separate appts working up to that. That being said, every appt you will not be disappointed with the results--her work blends beautifully and only gets better with each appointment! 5) Her color correction skills are advanced and phenomenal. I first came to Christy with black, orange, purple and pink hair that I messed up while dying with manic panic. She took me from that horrid mess to a beautiful highlighted blonde. 6) She is confident in her knowledge, work and worth but isn't egotistical about it. She has over 20 years of experience in the beauty industry and while her results prove how great she is, she is still so humble. I have went to stylists who have less experience and are less skilled but still charge $250+ for highlights. I believe that Christy is very reasonably priced and honestly worth so much more than she charges for her services. To be completely honest, I believe Christy is the perfect hairstylist. Nice salon with really good parking in Portland Alphabet. But it really is all about the stylist, which in my case is Myrna Alcala. I wanted to give a shout out her. She deserves it! With Covid, it was almost 2 years of DIYing my hair till found another stylist ... (my beloved Sabrina had retired her scissors) And it was hard to find someone. Anyone I called was booked out for literally months. Finally,while hiking in Forest Park I ran into a friend who has similiar hair to mine and asked her who did her hair. She gave me Myna's number. Like hers, my hair is overly thick, and dingy blonde; mine though happens to look like a wet blanket often. With lots of grey to add an extra dose of blah. Basically i needed an Epic Do Over. I know its the thing to go grey, but just not ready. Anyways... Myna gave me the best haircut that I've had in a LONG time. Her color was impeccable. The highlights were very natural and brightening. She uses Goldwell and steams your hair color. It came out fantastic. I have been spoiled with having may hair done the last few years in Beverly Hills and I recently moved to Oregon. I needed a new stylist and I found one that actually does a better job with blondes than any stylist in LA! Christy and the staff are friendly and wonderful at this salon. I am very picky about my blonde and not having any orange at the roots however trying to maintain healthy hair that doesn't break or fray. Christy has accomplished this. I have been to her now for six months and I love the color and cut! She is the best blonde expert in the area in my opinion and she is also very accommodating!!! I work full time, am a mom, and she can get me in at 630 am. I was pretty nervous as this would be my first time getting my hair dyed. I was recommended to Christy and I made my appointment a month ago and finally saw her yesterday. She texted a day before to check in to see if I could still make it which I appreciated. And over texting we talked about the color I wanted to achieve, she was honest that it wouldn't be the same but that she would try to get it close the picture I wanted. She was very accommodating, nice and honest. Gave me tips about what colors would work and wouldn't, what would bring out the hair etc. She took really good care of me and my hair and it was a long process and I appreciated the time considering I was her last client foe the day, and it was a two color process, bleaching and coloring and cutting my hair. My hair didn't turn out the same color from what I originally wanted, but she achieved the ombre style I wanted and colors that pop out more. I always go to Christy for my cut and color and wouldn't know what to do without her. She does such an amazing job. She knows my hair and makes recommendations on what would work and what wouldn't work for my hair type and face's shape and features. She's very meticulous so will spend the extra time to make sure every hair falls perfectly and I appreciate that so much about her. It's always a pleasure visiting Christy (and also Taylor) at Icon. I didn't really want to share this cause I wanted to keep Christy all to myself (it's super hard to get an appt with her). Christy is so wonderful! She knows how to work with Asian hair! Today was my first visit to Icon Salon and I had the privilege of seeing Christy. I have been trying to accomplish and ombré look for the last 6 months and today was the first time I walked out of a salon loving my hair! Christy was fantastic! she was very knowledgable and did a great job explaining the process of coloring, so I felt like it helped my expectations be realistic. Went in for a color fix with Christy - she's amazing! Just moved here and a different colorist elsewhere wasn't able to match my blonde and wound up making it really brassy. I showed Christy a photo of what I was going for and while I know it'll take a couple visits to fully fix it, she pretty much nailed it in one sitting. Put lowlights back in to bring back some of my natural color and dimension, fixed the brassiness, gave me a beautiful natural blonde and it looked awesome. This is my first Yelp review. Even having a bad experience with Christy at Icon Salon, I wasn't going to write a review until I just went in to "fix my hair" and was so personally insulted by her that I felt compelled to share my experience. I've had 3 experiences with her now, if you would include my "fix my hair" experience. First experience was for a cut and it was fine. Not the greatest haircut, probably a 7 out of 10, but it was fine enough for $50 if I remember correctly. While I was there, she had commented about how my balayage job at another salon looked really brassy and that I should come to see her in a couple months to get it re-done and lightened for the summer. That was in December. It was now May, and I felt like it was time to get a haircut and finally get my color re-done for a bachelorette party I was going to the following week in Laguna Beach. I was booked a 7:45am appointment on Fri 5/29 and the process took about 2.5 hours. I asked for a balayage with subtle blonde highlights and brought in several reference photos for Christy. I didn't want the highlights to start from the root so it would be low maintenance, but she advised that it would look weird if it wasn't from the root. She said she would do a mix of both from the root and several that were a couple inches down. I wasn't so sure about that, but I trusted her and she began the process. Once my hair was blow-dried and styled, I noticed that there were several thick strands of highlights on one side, where it just looked like a skunk strip. I asked her to put in a couple dark pieces to break up the color and have it look more like highlights. I could tell she was annoyed, but she did it for me and I was out the door. Total cost came out to $140 + $20 tip. When I washed my hair and styled it myself the next day, I noticed a line of highlights starting at the same vicinity at the back of my head that I had missed at the salon; she had curled my hair so it wasn't noticeable. However, when I had hung out with my friends over the weekend, multiple people had pointed it out and said I should definitely get it fixed. One of my friend's friends is actually a stylist at a salon in the Pearl and said it was a definite stylist mistake. So I called on Sunday and left a voice message about my hair situation and when I can come in to get it fixed next week. Monday rolls around and I expected to get a call from someone at Icon, but no one calls me. So I call them around 5pm and Christy answers the phone. When I told her about my hair, it was apparent from the line that she was upset. She was short and said that she could fit me in the next day, which is today, Tues 6/2 at 1:30pm. It's during my work hours but I really wanted to get it fixed before the party so I told her I would make that time work. So I come in today and I could tell from the get go that she was pissed. She was so short with me, her face was red and she hands me a mirror and asks me to point out the strips that needed fixing. It's clear that there is a line in my hair and she is wanting me to play the role of stylist because "she doesn't know what's wrong with my hair." My friends had said probably a couple foils from the root would help solve the problem because they are like that on the side but when I had asked Christy for that, she said that she cannot go any lighter (probably because it would take more time to do that) and that she can only go darker. She said the only thing she could do was bring a couple of the highlights lower so that they are not all starting at the same place. I didn't agree with her, but I didn't want to be around her any more than she wanted me to be in that chair. While she is putting dye in my hair, she literally says to me, and this is verbatim, "Never book color with me. I don't mind doing your cut, but do not book me for color." I was speechless that she even had the nerve to say that to one of her clients. Then she proceeds to lecture me that this this look "depends on how you style it." I couldn't disagree more. In my opinion, the difference between a mediocre stylist and a good stylist is that your hair looks good however you style it, straight or curled. She spritzed the hair strands with dye, and I walked out of there just livid. She did not try to rectify the situation and make me a happy client. Instead, she insulted me and told me to "never book color with her." She clearly does not value her clients' satisfaction, but rather cares more about the quantity of clients over the quality of her work. Again, I don't write Yelp reviews even when I have had bad services or experiences. However, my experience with Christy at Icon warranted one that I wanted to share this lengthly review of her. Clearly, I will no longer be booking any more appointments with her. I will be taking my business elsewhere for both cut AND color. Now you guys be the judge and tell me-is this the job of a good stylist? read more

Their styling may be "amazing" but they NEED to work on their system for booking appointments. I called asking for a haircut with a stylist who had been recommended to me, I am a stylist myself and truly appreciate when someone loves the experience they had at a salon. I spoke to Taylor- who tells me she will have the stylist call me to make an appointment. I have had this happen before with other freelance stylist, in a prompt and timely manner. This time however I did not hear from the stylist until 8:40 pm, having called the salon at 4. Only to be told that she had no availability- but that Taylor would call me with another stylist option so I could still come in at that time. Cut to this morning- I received a call, from Taylor as promised, only to be told THERE IS NO OPEN AVAILABILITY. Wow. I was severely inconvenienced by being told I would have an appointment when in reality I do not; and am now trying to scramble on my last day off to make an appointment elsewhere. I have been a customer at Icon for sometime after reading the rave reviews about Christy. The hype is true-her color work is amazing and I've never walked out disappointed with the results. The reason for the two stars is that interpersonally you don't always know what you're gonna get. While she is definitely polite, on more than one occasion I've caught her on an off day and it's not always pleasant. Last time I came in she said I booked the wrong type of appointment and was upset with me even though I had clarified via text what I was needing. After putting me under the dryer she left abruptly while my scalp was quickly overheating and I was drenched in sweat. She was short and curt the entire appointment and I nearly left in tears. While Christy does a good job with her work she seems to work a lot and may be burnt out. That's the best way I can interpret the situation. One other disappointing fact is that she doesn't help much in enhancing the health of the hair. While I appreciate that she does not push products, some personalized recommendations once in awhile wouldn't hurt either. It was a tough decision for me leaving the salon but it was also disheartening watching patrons with other stylists laughing and having the time of their lives while I was sitting nervously trying not to irritate her somehow. read more

I don't write many reviews.. but felt this warranted one. I saw Christy.. who I've seen twice before( and didn't have this issue).. and she was very rude. She does a good job on hair.. However she scolded me for about 40 min about not keeping up with my highlights and putting a gloss in it over the course of the last year and half of not seeing her. I was pregnant(high risk pregnancy), and now have a newborn.. and I didn't want to dye my hair during that time. She said if I did it again, she would refuse me as a client. She insisted over and over that she wasn't going to be able to do anything with it..but it came out exactly as I asked. So she is very good with hair. When I was checking out she asked me to not come and see her again for a long time. This was my first time doing something for myself since having the baby.. and it's such a bummer that it was so stressful. I was also charged $50 more then the previous time (not including tip) Unfortunately will have to find someone else to do my hair.
