Senroppon Salad
Michele L.

We had a pretty heavy dinner the other day, so today, I was looking to balance that with a greener meal while we were out. I ended up choosing Cha Ya since it was around the area where we needed to be and it turned out to be the perfect choice. We happened to come around noon on a Monday so it was pretty empty. Parking can be a little hectic around the area, but you can get lucky with residential parking as well. They accept cash or Venmo at this time only. Between my partner and I, we got the Senroppon Salad, Hasami Age and a Hana Gomoku. The Senroppon Salad came pretty quickly. It's composed of a lot of shredded root veggies, some tofu strips, edamame, sprouts and seeds mixed with a light soy vinaigrette. I found some inspiration while having this. It's a very refreshing, non-green, healthy salad. Quite unique! The vinaigrette gets a little stronger when you get to the bottom of the salad since those have been sitting in the dressing for a while. Next, the Hasami Age was something my partner was intrigued about. It's almost like a sushi roll, but made the filling is just corn and tofu. They're wrapped with a soybean sheet and nori and then lightly battered and fried. It turned out really delicious! The batter was indeed on the lighter side and it didn't feel heavy or oily at all. The corn and tofu mix was a little bland, so I wished they put a bit more veggie variety in there for different taste and texture. The almond sauce worked really well with it. If I have to describe this dish, it's like the offspring of a sushi roll and spring roll, haha. Lastly, the Hana Gomoku! This is like a very healthy Buddha bowl. All the ingredients were laid out neatly on top and there was a lot of veggie varieties! I love that they mixed hijiki into the rice, so it not only added flavor to the base, but also some texture. It was beautiful and delicious. We had a nice, quiet, and enjoyable meal here. I hope to try some of their other menu items when we're around Berkeley again!

The food is always a hit, as someone who doesn't eat any fish, this place is absolutely wonderful catering. The service is well, and foods brought to your table quickly. Small place with only about 10 tables, very cozy and makes eating the meal even more special. This is a go to spot whenever I'm in Berkley as the flavors are Individually noticeable, yet come together so pleasantly.

Sea Vegetable Salad

Delivery order was a bit sad looking after the travel. Quality and taste made up for it. Especially loved the potato croquette in the curry and the way they steamed the veg separately was super inspiring. Back in the college days I used to just boil it all together and it was mushy/absorbed all the individual flavors. Definitely get the sea veg salad and the summer greens roll - super refreshing. Everything was topped with Kaiware sprouts and a variety of carefully selected/handled veg. Bookmarked forever, definitely will be a go-to healthy delivery selection if they stay in our range!

Not the best vegetarian sushi place I have been to. Service was ok, the place needs an update and smelled of bleach. Not well lit. The food was ok,nothing special. The napkin on the table they use for silverware is a hard bathroom paper towel! Wow... Asparagus was cold. The veggies rice bowl was bland no flavor and had a weird smell. I think it was the bowl and spoon, Maybe the dishwasher needs fixing... the bun was way too hot, I had to cut in half to cool off. I believe it was microwaved not steamed. And the plate color was scraped/scratched off. Time for new plates. To pay its cash or Venmo app only.

It was disappointing. Everything tasted the same from the lack of seasoning and same sauce poured on everything.

Everything was beautiful and very fresh! Such a unique restaurant that offers a vegetarian's dream for Japanese food. Very healthy and guilt-free food that looks and tastes like it's made with love. I wish there were more locations!

The food could have little more flavorful with spices. The customer service was amazing and super polite. Its clean place but not fancy.

They have a nice little to-go fridge with decorative rolls at a good price. Cash only though, so sometimes I have to skip it.

We waited 10 minutes to get in, which wasn't unreasonable, and once we ordered, the food came out quickly. The place is very small and seemingly popular. I would definitely come back. Solid 8/10.

Since there is fairly limited seating, wait times can be rough, especially if you're going during lunch or dinner rush. I've waited 30-45 minutes before. The restaurant is pretty small so tables are pretty close to each other and it may be difficult to be seated quickly if you're going in with a larger group. That asides, the food as Noodle Dynasty is unmatched. I typically get their noodle soups, which are a massive portion size, & appetizers, such as lamb skewers, spicy wontons, and chinese doughnuts. To this day, I think that the spicy wontons are the best in the area - super flavorful beyond just the chili oil taste. Definitely recommend getting these! You order on a tablet & food comes out so fast. Could not recommend this place enough!

The corn cakes were fried just right so they were golden on the outside but soft on the inside and the slaw and sweet sauce elevated it. I would get both appetizers again. For entrees we had: Mama Pad Kee Moa (3.5/5) - instant noodles with fresh veggies and very thin beef. Flavor was good, but the beef missed the mark because it was lacking. Massaman Gai Curry (5/5) - the curry was so flavorful in this dish and the soft potato complimented it very well. Definitely the winner of the night. Chicken Khao Pad (Fried Rice) (3/5) - rice was a little too dry and the thinly cut chicken again did not pop out in the dish. Overall, very fresh and authentic Thai dishes. Service was fast and attentive. There are plenty of seating options to dine in, but I also saw a lot of take out orders. Street parking can be difficult on Shattuck but easier to find on the side streets.

There's a self-serve tempura station where each piece is individually priced, so you have control over how little or much you want to spend. My first time here I ordered the size regular #10 and two vegetable tempura pieces, and the total was slightly under under or around $10. The next time I decided to splurge and added a third tempura, and the total was $13 something. Really good deal! I have a decent appetite and found the regular size bowl to be filling but not too filling. The noodles are perfectly chewy and the broth is flavorful. This place is definitely on par with other udon places in terms of taste. My second time here I came alone and I noticed quite a few people were also eating alone. For some reason this is a nice spot to have a meal by yourself. Maybe the quick service and the lowkey atmosphere helps. They have a lot of indoor seating, as well as outdoor seating that is elevated and sectioned away from the sidewalk. My source of anxiety here is having to carry the tray with your bowl to your table. I'm not the most coordinated, but it's been fine so far.

The dinning area is average on cleanliness but where the area you get utensils, there is huge stain of gyoza sauce all over the counter, which is disgusting. Several employees pass by, no one bother to clean up! The other problem with this visit is staff not stocking up ready to serve, we ordered 4 char siu udon, there were bo noodles bowls, paper cups or several items, the girl has to hot scramble to go fetch the bowls, paper cups to heat up the meat which was still cold, noodle bowls was lukewarm at best, she really made a mess all over the counter and had to ask for help to scope up 4 small bowls of rice which was also barely lukewarm. The jumbo kitchen katsu look over cooked and is actually overcooked and taste like chicken jerky. Maybe they have high turnover of staff and we also had to wait for staff to come over to cash register station. We also have to ask for green onion to be refill, which shouldn't need to, tempura bits were always stocked, why wasn't the green onion? Price was great with 30% discount but food quality, readiness and cleanliness isn't good, food was barely lukewarm, chicken was overcooked, lots of items were not restock during dinner hours. Unfortunately I can only give 2 stars, it would have been a 4 stars if food is serve hot and items well stocked and cleanliness. I hope they improve
