Very happy this restaurant was open on Christmas. Their Alberta location is located near the end of the artistic Alberta street. Street parking along the main road or side streets. The main reason why I came here was because they served khao soi! It was delicious but sweeter than what I had it in Thailand. Still pretty good tho! My friend and I visited Cha Ba Thai recently for dinner. The service was good and the ambiance was ok. We got pad se ew with chicken and tom kha with tofu. We got both dishes mild to match my friend's tastes. The pad se ew was delicious. The noodles were soft. The sauce and veggies were tasty and there was plenty of chicken. The soup was good but we found that there wasn't enough coconut milk. Prices were good. It was a 3.5 out of 5 stars for me. read more

Your standard Thai restaurant with the usual offerings. Great lunch special deals, from about $10-14 depending on your protein choice. The full menu is pretty large w/ some other things like crispy duck that looked very good in addition to the usual fare. I like the spicy sweet basil pork here a lot. Their Cha Ba Thai noodle soup was very good too, mix of pho and sour Tom yum flavor. Went here for a quick dinner and their food was delicious. We ordered the tofu spring rolls, mussamun curry, Tom-kha, and their papaya salad. Everything was great. The spring rolls were on the smaller side, but the peanut sauce was so delicious. The curry we ordered because we'd never heard of this kind of curry before. It was great. We looked up so many different Thai places in PDX and this is the one that we actually went to!!! SUPER impressed by their chicken pad Thai, it had a smoky flavor on the chicken rather than plain steamed chicken. The sauce was perfect and the portion was huge! The Alberta Arts District is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Portland due to its' eclectic, Bohemian feel, great restaurants, and art/music/theatre scene. We deployed to the area of operations to see a Little Shop of Horrors charity extravaganza at the Alberta Rose Theatre just a couple of doors west of Cha Ba Thai. Not surprisingly, the large dining room was virtually empty at 5pm when we arrived, so we were guided to a four-top next to the window. The room is simple and tastefully decorated with a full bar on one side and tables on the other. There is also a large outdoor seating area with several picnic tables, so feel free to enjoy your meal al fresco if you so desire. We were promptly greeted when we entered and, after being seated, our drink/appetizer orders were promptly taken. I ordered a Ninkasa IPA ($5.50) for me and the Chicken Satay ($9.50) and Egg Rolls ($6) for the both of us to share. Each of the four satay sticks had a large serving of grilled chicken served with a tasty peanut sauce, my favorite, and some chunks of onion and cucumber in a mildly sweet sauce. The satay was very good, but I am not sure it was worth the extra $3 or $4 when compared to satay prices at most Thai restaurants I have been to. The egg rolls were small and somewhat bland, also being a buck or two more expensive to similar dishes elsewhere. My wife decided on the Pad See Ew (Tofu - $11.50), wide noodles and broccoli florets stir fried in a mild, slightly sweet soy sauce. She was very happy with the dish although I found it somewhat tasteless as well. I tend to favor the spicier and more savory Thai curry dishes, so I went with the Massaman Curry w/ Jasmine Rice ($13). The curry sauce was delicious, but not quite as thick as many I have had and the vegetables (carrot, potato, and onion) fresh, but there was a paltry amount of sliced beef on top when it arrived. Again, the prices for our entrees were each a few bucks too high in my opinion. The service was excellent, fast, friendly and efficient, and the food came out post haste. Overall, we were well satiated and happy with our meal, but the prices were a tad high in comparison to other Thai restaurants we have visited and the less than abundant beef content of my curry was disappointing, so "where's the beef?" I've tried many things that are on the menu and sometimes things that are off the menu (only when the owner is around and had the ingredients). I am happy to recommend this place to anyone asking for a good Thai place to eat! My coworker and I came here for lunch and she wanted to see what I would eat. Loved the pad Thai! Service was pleasant and attentive. Colorful napkins add to the pleasant atmosphere. I ordered tofu and chicken in my pad Thai and the tofu was big rectangles of perfectly cooked goodness. Just the right ratio of crunch, chewiness, and soft insides. I always ask for cilantro (why don't Portland Thai restaurants use cilantro in pad Thai?) and they gave me a nice amount to sprinkle into my dish. Thumbs up! read more

I get the Spicy Noodles everywhere and I loved this place the best, but they weren't spicy. But that was okay because my 4 yr old was eating with us and wouldn't be able to handle that. We went all the way from Eugene to there. No forks or chopsticks for my to-go order. How am I supposed to eat it to go? Second when my wife was eating her fried rice she ate this hard wood stuff kind of like a toothpick. There was also a medium long hair in my curry. My hair is short and my wife's hair isn't that color. When I asked for extra rice they were asking for $2.50. This amount of rice isn't enough for my curry. We've been eating here since they opened years ago. And were huge fans of the original location on NE Sandy even before this location opened. We have generally said this was one of the best Thai food places in town. We recently found a piece of metal in one of our egg rolls. I took it to the restaurant and they seemed unfazed. Casually said it was from a metal scrubber that they use in the kitchen. It was almost an inch long! I asked for the manager to call us. They called once and didn't even leave a message. We have been getting to-go orders almost weekly for many years, you think they would have wanted to make sure we were ok and to apologize to a long-time customer. Additionally in the last year or so (maybe 2 years) the amount of vegetables has dramatically decreased in the vegetarian version of panang curry. In addition to the metal in the egg roll, our last order was the most ridiculous so far. The to-go dish had maybe 1/2 cup of veggies in a completely full container of sauce. We are very disappointed and will probably not be returning which is very sad considering they are located just a few blocks from our house. read more

I ordered the pad see ew with shrimp and W ordered the massaman curry. We shared an appetizer of shrimp wontons. I was just not impressed with my dish. The noodles were about the size of a small napkin and the flavor was just not right. The noodles were really soggy and the sauce wasn't as good as most I've had. The shrimp were good. I ordered my dish to be a level four spicy out of five. It was very spice and made my eyes water, which I loved. I just wish the noodles had been a little firmer and the sauce had been better. I got a terrible stomach ache right after eating. Thought it was indigestion do I took 5 tums and thought I'd try to walk it off. Boyfriend enjoyed his and had no issues. We saved some for leftovers. The following day, we go on a boating trip and I make an *emergency* run for the woods to relieve myself while we had anchored the boat on a deserted island. Very poor timing and very uncomfortable... Unsuspecting, I reheated some that night and it tasted good as leftovers too. (Again, would give a good rating in the taste category). However, today, I've had recurring GI disturbances all day to the point where I'm scared to leave the car to run errands without mapping out a close enough restroom. Meanwhile, back at the house, my boyfriend has been in and out of the bathroom all day after eating leftovers last night and again this AM for breakfast. He also s*at himself on a work call today. I met Cha Ba Thai on Sandy a few years back and was pleasantly surprised when a Cha Ba Two opened up in a way more convenient location for my being this deep into my PdXXX life. Yes. That's my sexy portland life. Cha Ba Thai on Alberta is what happens when my favorite thai restaurant gets a cool kid sister I can relate to, a sister who comes complete with cute outdoor seating. All my favorite, awesome quality food made it to the new location, along with the super friendly service that make me love Cha Ba a bit more than every other thai place. As a bonus, they're awesome about taking dietary considerations into account. My recommendation: Order the tempura, take a bite and then hold the plate over your head and run a victory lap. The curries are pretty high up on my list of delicious as well as the pad kee mao, pra ram, garlic and pepper. read more

Although I enjoyed the food, I have to say I found nothing special about Cha Ba Thai than almost any other Thai restaurant in Portland. I also found the service to be rushed, on the verge of (but not completely) rude, and left feeling like I was bothering them. If I feel like I'm bothering a business as a paying customer - then I tend not to return. Just my thing I guess. This place has pretty good standard Thai cuisine. The staff is friendly. The inside is nice. They have a good patio for summer time outside that is brightly colored and very inviting on a nice sunny day. Noodle dishes here are done well. I like the flavor. Not too salty. I usually get the chicken and brocoli or the pad thai. Both are fresh and healthy choices. Recently is went in and decided to try the fried rice. This was great! Nice and light. Good size portion. I liked how it wasn't too oily. This place has nice healthy Thai options. Oh...and the Thai iced tea is fabulous! read more

Well since we love the one on Sandy we had to try the new one and it's even closer to home. Just did take out last night and it was as good if not a little better than Cha Ba Thai on Sandy. The bonus for me is it also looks like the restaurant doesn't have florescent lighting (good for me since florescent lights give me headaches). We'll have to eat in one of these times. Do not go here. Very bad food. Literally go anywhere else and it will most likely be better tasting.

Surprisingly good! Notable were the "corn crisp" and the fish cake appetizers. My son ordered his entree "as hot as they could make it", and it came back medium at best. There was visibly lots of red pepper flake, but it didn't seem to pack the "thai hot" punch he likes at other places (that do it by means other than use of red pepper flake). If you're seeing a show at the Alberta Rose Theater, the location doesn't get any more convenient. Worth a stop. read more
