I should've read these reviews first instead of trusting the word of a coworker. I recently moved, and decided that Cox was just too expensive of a burden to carry to the new home. So, I contacted CenturyLink as a coworker ranted about how affordable they are and nary a problem with service. I guess his experience is the rare unicorn we've all heard of but have yet to experience. I signed up for service online on 9/5/2020. Got several emails confirming my service request, providing my account number and date/time that an install tech would come out to set up my new service. "This is great" I think to myself, as I (way too soon) gloated about ONE thing going right during this move. Install day arrives on 9/11, I go to my new home and wait ALL. DAY. for the tech to arrive. I was given a time frame of 8am - 4pm. If you think the tech was there before 4pm, you're way too optimistic. That should've been clue #1 that this was going to end badly. So, tech takes about an hour to get install done. I live in a gated community, so there were issues with locating the proper wiring, etc., etc. Once it was installed and the router was showing all green lights, tech had me to connect my iPhone and work laptop to make sure that it worked. Lo and behold, both connected and I was surfing the web sans issues. I left home about an hour after the tech did to go to my second job, and when I left, all was well. The very next day, I go to log in to work from home for my full time job, and...no connection. I go to my phone to see if it's still connected. It was, but guess what? I had to turn wifi OFF in order to get the internet to work. Huh? Why? Who? How? "Ok, this must be a glitch" I think to myself. So, thankfully, I hadn't disconnected service at my former rental, so I drive way back to the other side of town so I can work and my manager won't think I decided to pull a Ferris Bueller on her.
The very next day, I try it again. iPhone - won't connect. Work laptop - won't connect. iMac - won't connect. This went on for a whole two weeks. I decided I'd had enough and needed to cancel. Maybe Cox's big, big monthly charge isn't too heavy a burden to bear. At least it worked. I call on 9/21 to cancel. Get someone on the phone within 12 minutes. Score! The call somehow dropped. I call back four more times and at this point, I'm livid. I get a young man named Edouard who tries to keep me as a customer (which I totally appreciate) and looks at the account to discover that it was suspended due to nonpayment. Uh, I've only been a customer for two weeks. Nonpayment? I paid the deposit, taxes and whatever else that initial $65 charge covered. Edouard promises that he'll escalate the problem and it should be resolved within 12 hours or less. Me, feeling pretty great about all this, believes this verbal unicorn wholeheartedly. I get up the next day, try all my electronics again - no service. EVEN THO the router still has all green lights down the front. Nothing flashing, nothing red and nothing amber - all green lights. I drive in to the office so I can work because I kinda like staying employed. I call CenturyLink to cancel service. Took TWO phone calls. The first rep decided to mumble all his words together in the "disclaimer" that they have to share with anyone that is terminating service. I asked what he said, he disconnected the call. I call back, not upset, not yelling, just empty. Tired. Frustrated. Sorry. Sorry, that I ever signed up with this company. I'm hoping that the return label comes in the mail soon so I can send this router back, pay any final charges due and be done with this useless chapter of my life. From previous reviews, I may be in for Round 2.
*Forgot to mention - in the midst of all this uselessness, I tried many, many times to log on to CenturyLink's website to manage my account. Wouldn't take my login credentials. Didn't accept my email address, which they were using to communicate with me, wouldn't change my password. I tried resetting the password with the date I ordered service, the website kept telling me that that was the incorrect date. Reference above, where I said I ordered service on 9/5 and I have the emails to prove it. This only added to my frustration*
For those of you that have CenturyLink and it works, congrats. For a large lot of us, it was nothing but paying to exist, I guess. read more
