I play a lot of pool and when I'm traveling, I'm always keeping an eye out for new places to play…read moreeven if I don't have my gear. I stopped by one afternoon and the gal behind the bar was super accommodating and even told me where I could get more of the coffee I was drinking. There were a bunch of 9 foot Brunswick's and they were well maintained. The house cues were a little beat up, but didn't seem to affect my game much--at least they are tipped well. This is a legit pool hall and I will definitely be back the next time I'm in Austin. I did come back in the evening just to burn a little time while I was waiting for some friends and the nighttime crew was just as friendly. Thanks for a good time, y'all!

But that is nothing compared to how awful the food is. Growing up and living in Boston I was accustomed to Irish Pubs that took pride in the food they made. Let's be honest - Irish food in general is not very good but the pubs I went to in Boston elevated the fare. If it is in fact true that BD Riley's is run by someone from Boston then he or she should be ashamed of the food they serve. It's like they have a 10 year old cooking the food. You can drown your sorrows in food. * * * The Coppertank is a former under-used event space that is now a present day somewhat more used pool hall. Better to have people shooting pool and drinking beer than have the lights out and collect no revenue. Nominally it is a pool hall and games place in the spirit of Dave and Busters. But there aren't very many non-pool games. The non-pool games they have are pretty boring. (Shoot baskets with a timer running.) I was there on a semi-busy Friday night. Zero people were playing the games. That included me. They also have Sports TV so they can be a sports bar. All the channels except one were on one stupid hockey game - the Detroit Red Wings versus the San Jose Sharks. All the Texans on Sixth Street are dying to see the Detroit Red Wings play the San Jose Sharks. NOT !!! Nobody was watching the hockey game except me. I was only watching because there was nothing better to do. I personally stink at pool. (No hand to eye coordination. Lousy depth of field focusing. I can focus near or far but not both.) But this is not a place for serious pool players any way. Most of the people playing were missing their shots. No one was running the table. I saw two tough looking Vietnamese hombres who looked like they could be the guys to beat in a Saigon pool hall. Except that the first guy was explaining to the second guy the difference between colored balls and striped balls. They could have been trying to hustle up a game. But given the lame quality of what was going on around them AND the fact that nobody was gambling, They probably really WERE rank amateurs. (If you are looking for a serious game of pool, Go to Betsy's Billiards in South Austin on tournament night. Round Rock has major pool action at Skinny Bob's and Fast Eddie's. ) * * * So with a stupid hockey game on TV, no games worth actually playing and no pool worth actually watching, Entertainment came down to food and drink. Skip the drinks. They have eight kinds of beer with the eight including hard seltzer. Shiner Bock, Modelo, Coors, a few light beers and two IPAs if you absolutely insist on having something drinkable. They offer eight different Sixth Street style shots. I personally love me a Sixth Street style shot. In one of my earlier lives, I must have been a sorority girl. I will usually drink a string of these to get a wide range of flavors and experiences. I did their "Trick Shot" - a curacao, peach schnapps and pineapple juice concoction. If I was to ever have to go into rehab, I would want my last drink to be a Trick Shot. It made me lose all interest whatsoever in alcohol. * * * Surprisingly, their kitchen is pretty good. The options are limited - but what they do they do well. I ordered a chicken tender and french fry plate. Chicken tenders are a high risk proposition. I have had some pretty awful chicken tenders in Austin. That includes some places that specialize in fried chicken. The chicken tenders at Copper Tank were top of the line. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every bite. Given the absolute lack of compelling distractions, Those chicken fingers got 100% of my attention. It was attention that paid off. * * * Am I eager to return to Copper Shot? Hell No. If I am on Sixth Street for serious music, I want to go to the Mohawk. If I am there to eat, I want the legendary burgers at Casino El Camino. If I am drinking, I am probably sliding off Sixth Street to an institution of higher mixology such as the Roosevelt Room. (Or I am paying top dollar for a premium mescal at Cockfight). If I am there to dance, the Coconut Club is calling my name. If I am with someone who really really really really wants to play pool, The Copper Tank would not be a bad choice. Even if I make a hash of 49 out of every 50 shots, That would make me competitive with some of the other people in the room.

Plain old bar. No reason not to go there. But no reason to go there either. Perfectly adequate for what it is offering. If it was nearby, why not? * * * Minor notes. a) Even though this place is right on top of campus, I noticed almost no undergraduates the Friday night I was there. There were a bunch of elderly and middle-aged Longhorn golf club types and a handful of Cherry Creek Coffeehouse style graduate students either out on dates or working on some project. Maybe the undergrads were in their dorms or sororities doing the pre-parties for the eventual march on Sixth Street. The Crown and Anchor is not the place you would want to wear your slinky black cocktail dress. So if a black cocktail dress is in your plan, you would rose-all-the-way with your friends in your room, then change over and head downtown. b) The Crown and Anchor is across the street from a beautiful lush strand of trees north of campus. The church tower from the Seminary can be seen in the middle distance. This ought to be one of the best views in Austin. Except that UT has plunked a maintenance shed in front of all this. So you spend your time looking at a grungy trailer-like thing where they give maintenance guys their schedules and keep stashes of outdoor equipment and repair supplies. This is not where you want to go to look at the sunset. Turn your back to all that and watch the game.

I was very impressed with Paul and his service. I purchased a 16 year old fixer upper Olhausen pool table on Craigslist. (I disassembled it and moved the table to my house months ago...then decided to replace the flooring in the game room). After the floor was done, my kids were giving me the "when are we going to get the table set up ?" whine. That's when I looked on Craigslist and found Paul. I thought the cushions/bumpers on the table were "dead" and asked him to give me a quote to replace those, set up the table and refelt it. He gave me a much cheaper quote than what the billiard stores wanted. On top of this, after removing the felt from the bumpers he and his helper informed me that I had the higher grade of cushions and that there was nothing wrong with them. I was a little skeptical but he was totally right. Now the table looks and plays like a new one and it cost me less than I expected. You can tell he's been doing this a long time, knows his tables and has professional grade tools, levels etc. read more

We have 8, 9' Connelly Pool tables and recently had the pleasure of working with Paul of Central Texas Billiards LLC for a table recovering and repair. We couldn't have been more impressed. From start to finish, his professionalism, expertise, and dedication were evident. Paul is a rockstar. He knows entirely too much about the construction (...and deconstruction, and maintenance, and insert blank here) of pool tables. His prices for moving pool tables and pool table maintenance are so much lower than ANYONE else in Austin that you may find yourself feeling skeptical about his attention to quality and detail. This couldn't be farther from the truth; his prices are more indicative of how nice of a guy he is. And how much he enjoys what he does for a living. My humble suggestion: If you hire Paul, don't point to your table and say "have at it!" and walk away. Stick around, hang out, get to know him. He's a great conversation. This guy is as good as it gets! I showed him a picture of the sloppy job of the previously installed cloth (relief cuts and staples showing in all pockets). I am very particular about the fit and finish of things and Paul exceeded all of my expectations. I threw him all the challenges as well as a very tight fitting, low stretch worsted wool (Simonis 860). Yes, the otherlocal billiard company (Austin Billiards) might be 10% cheaper, but Paul's work is 100% better! You will probably just end up getting it redone like I did! I can't put a picture on here but the cloth is stretched tight with not a single staple or relief cut showing! Thanks again Paul! read more

Had Paul Wright (owner of Central Texas Billiards) install an Olhausen I acquired on Craigslist in my new upstairs game room. Paul is a true expert in the billiards business and the install was handled professionally and at a reasonable rate. I am first time pool table owner, so I asked Paul a lot of questions while watching the install process. In response to my stream of questions, Paul offered me a lot of helpful advice. Paul and Andre did awesome work. We have an antique Brunswick table built in 1912. Paul quoted me a fair price and even drove to San Antonio and was still on time. They put together the table, restored the finish, put on great felt, and ensured it was completely level. He brought extra cushions and supplies but said the original ones I had were good to go. It is great to see that there are folks out there not trying to take advantage of consumers. We couldn't have asked for better customer service, professionalism, and knowledge. We had hired another local billiards company to assist us with a pool table install. Long story short, the other company couldn't do the work (after they had committed to do the work and showed up at the house). We were left scrambling for someone to help us the same day (which is impossible in and of itself). We found Paul (the Owner) and he not only agreed to assist us...but he squeezed us in the same day and got the job done with a smile. Paul is tha man! I got a nice pool table on Clist but it wasn't felted; luckily i also found Paul on C-list. Paul and I talked late on a Friday and by early evening Saturday he was on the job. He happened to have used felt from another table and worked out a price with me I'm positive nobody else in Austin would match. Turned my skeleton white and chrome pool table into an absolute gem w. black rails and dark green felt. Plays amazing and Paul even took the time to level it perfectly. A friend of mine recently passed onto me a few of his old house cues. The tips had all fallen off and needed re-servicing. When I called a local "family pool center", they informed me that it would cost me $12 per cue stick. Unswayed, I found Paul Wright's website and decided to give him a call to see how much he charged. Imagine my surprise when he asked for less than half the cost of the first place I called. Ok let's try this again. If anyone needs a perfectionist in Billiard repairs, please contact Paul Wright. He does work for a lot of pool halls. Takes great care of our tables ( Eddie's Tavern in Round Rock) The refelts are excellent. If we have any issues after the kids play, he is there promptly to repair a table. This review is for the ceramics course offered at Dougherty!…read more First off, I loved my instructor H.R, she was super knowledgable and eager to help everyone. She honestly made the experience great, and I would give her 5 stars any day. We were allotted a few open studio hours during the course to come in and work independently. These were pretty strictly monitored, and the weekend time slots tended to fill up quickly (understandably) For the price that I paid, I was pretty pleased with taking classes here however I would add some caveats: 1. There are a lot of restrictions here (glazes are pretty limited, you cannot make pieces larger than 8 in, can't bring in most outside glazes that are runny) 2. There were a lot of different skill levels in my class. A majority of the students seemed to be repeating students from the previous cycle, and had a lot of wheel experience. There were only 1-2 people in my class who were beginners. If I hadn't already had some exposure to the wheel, I think I would've been completely lost as most of the class time was spent on demos that the class requested instead of set lessons. If the cost wasn't almost half of what other studios in town were charging, I would probably go to another studio because of the above reasons, but honestly the deal is too good to complain. If you're able to get off the waitlist and get a class here, I'd recommend trying it out if you have some experience already! Otherwise I would try to take a more beginner friendly class elsewhere first

Murders and Moontowers is the name. The center is clean and well lit. Welcoming is the term I think of, inside at least. It's a bit hard to see if you are not paying attention and parking is not great. Not the worst but crowded. Inside had interesting local art, I have some pictures, and a few benches. The theater room is decent sized and you can see and hear pretty well. We were in row 3 or 4 to the right if on stage. The troupe was good and there were some clever songs. It is about an hour and while the murders do factor in its mostly about the growing city and political dealing. I know it's an art center first but two quick things. The chairs are awful. They took me out of the play several times as I could not get in a position that didn't cause pain. Two: I can go without a snack or food but I need liquids. Water, soda, something. If you don't want to sell it allow us to bring lidded bottles or Yetis. Yeti like cups wouldn't leave trash and would allow for less issues. But that said I really otherwise enjoyed this. Shana, the woman who married me, agrees place is very cool. The cast signed a book we had on the killings which was cool. The songs were mostly fun and entertaining. The cast did a good job and told a fun story in just an hour. There were a few things that felt a little out of place but overall it was a good time.

The two women in here were so nice, especially after walking in 30 minutes before they closed. They didn't rush me and were both very warm and welcoming. I didn't know that upon checking in (on Yelp) that I got a free donut pendant of my choosing, and neither did the manager on staff - she was excited to learn about the offer! I ended up with a clear quartz bracelet which is just subtle enough for me to wear daily, which is exactly what I was looking for. And I picked an amethyst donut pendant that I carry in my purse. :)
