If you're a musician you've heard about South Austin Music Co. It's a small shop that brings it with superb professional knowledge and help. They encourage you to work your way through the mass of guitars in search of that perfect one for you. I've bought a couple of instruments over the years but didn't have serious shopping time today. They have a great used gear inventory right now so I recommend you... Go!

Are you kidding me?! This place. I mean I can't even begin to express how hospitable these folks are. Not to mention the "no pressure" candor that they have -- I mean they let you play with 15K+ guitars just to let you experience a small glimpse of history!!! You can't fake that. These are a genuine group of individuals, deserving of anyone's business. (P.s. check out their YouTube channel)

I'm not a musician. Normally a small guitar store is intimidating. Not this place. My kids and I were greeted warmly by an employee that practically gave us a tour. He encouraged my teenage son to try any and every instrument, he taught me a song on ukulele, and he showed us the back room where they create a show. Representing the store, he really just conveyed a love of music. We left with a t-shirt, guilele strings, and smiles on our faces.

Fender Strat

I took a 1997 Fender Strat in to be tuned up for the first time ever. I had a friend add new pickups years ago, but he didn't do a great job of it. Ben was able to clean up those mistakes and make the guitar sing again. So grateful I found this place. Everyone here, including Shy the dog, is so friendly and easy to talk to. Highly recommend taking your guitar here.

One of several guitars, amps and cases we've bought here!

I found Collings years ago through a Texan friend and Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, CA (an incredibly wonderful guitar store). I don't know about you. but I over-think larger purchases and Collings ain't cheap, Skipper. So I analyzed the options to death. Finally I hid in a practice room and A-B'd the crap out of a Collings and a Santa Cruz. An easy decision. It's all about the tone in the end. Collings' fine materials and careful craftsmanship end up producing superior sound time and time again. I want another Collings but then I also want to meet Marilyn Monroe. One year I played an $18K carved top f-hole jazz guitar Bill Collings was about to deliver to Gary Trudeau, the creator of Doonesbury. The fact that Bill let me play it says something about what a nice man he is. This quality is in every Collings guitar. I love saying Hello to the Collings guys when I can get a pass into the NAMM show. They have started making electrics, which is a scary thought, because they look and play incredibly as you might expect. There is God and then there is Bill Collings. Case closed

I paid the fee because I would've been able to put it towards the overall repair cost and given how minimal the repair appeared to be, I never would have guessed an $800 quote. On top of this, it took him give or take 15 minutes to assess the damage and recommended via email after I had left the shop that I just replace my guitar with a used model for ~$400. I understand his advice I just wish he had been kind enough to know he was about to make me pay him $80 without having to do any work on the guitar. His tone supported that he knew it was unlikely I would move forward with the repair. Overall this just felt like a bait and switch, with me paying $80 for nothing. I recommend trying to find a quote elsewhere before going here just so you can ballpark if spending $80 is worthwhile.

I went back to the room that had the acoustic guitars in. I looked around and kinda fiddled with a couple of them. Again, not knowing anything about guitars or what I was looking for. I came out of the room and an employee asked me if I needed help with anything. I explained to him that I wanted to possibly buy a guitar and that I didn't know anything about them and I've never played a guitar. I told him that I was interested in a couple of them based on looks and what I've been told. He hooked me up with his guitar salesman (Fernando). I explained to him my situation. We went into the acoustic guitar studio/room and I pointed out the guitars that I kinda liked. He took them down and played each one of them to see how they compared. While he was playing, he was explaining different things to me. He took his time with me and was very patient and understanding. He knows everyone is a beginner at some point and time. After about 2 1/2 - 3 hours of testing out various brands of acoustic guitars I was able to make a decision on the guitar that was best suited for me. Then he helped me pick out a guitar case, strap, tuner, stand, etc... I never felt rushed, dumb or an inconvenience to Fernando, he spent as much time as I needed from him. I also met the store manager (Daniel) who was very nice as well. I'll be going back to take guitar lessons from one of their instructors in the near future. All in all, I had a great experience dealing with everyone and buying my first guitar from Guitar Center. I highly recommend them for any and all of your musical needs. The salesperson I spoke with immediately told me nothing existed in that price range and that I had to look at an option closer to $1,000. The way he said it didn't sit right with me, so I stepped away for a moment and checked the Guitar Center website myself. In minutes, I found the exact type of drum kit I had originally asked him about. I walked back and showed him the listing. At that point, he changed his story and admitted it existed, though he claimed the store didn't have it in stock. What happened next was even worse: he started insisting he had to place the order for me because he needed the commission. I told him I wasn't comfortable doing that, especially after realizing he misled me. He kept pushing for the commission, and when I finally said no, he became openly hostile and told me to leave the store. This all happened with my 3-year-old next to me. I left feeling shocked and uncomfortable. This isn't how any business should treat customers, let alone families with small children.

DO NOT take your instrument here for setups…read more I visited Musicians Woodshed last week and initially spoke with one of the guitar techs, Jett Boyd, who was polite and professional. We discussed my bass guitar and the possibility that some frets might need adjustment. When I returned the following week after noticing some fret buzz, I spoke with Miles Manglos. I explained that I prefer a very straight neck with low action and that I was not interested in adding more relief to the neck. Because of that, the logical solution would have been to address the fret work. Instead, he suggested doing a setup that would involve adding relief and raising the action--the exact opposite of what I had just explained I wanted. When I asked whether that meant adding neck relief and how that would affect the current setup, he couldn't clearly explain it. I also mentioned that at a different shop in another city, a tech had previously performed a setup even though I specifically asked him not to and only wanted the jack repaired. I brought this up simply to explain why I was trying to be very clear about the work I wanted done. Instead of addressing the issue professionally, Miles abruptly declined to work on the instrument and told me to leave. He was dismissive and repeatedly said he didn't understand what I was saying. A competent guitar tech or luthier should be able to translate what a musician is describing and communicate clearly about the work being recommended. If a shop cannot or does not want to perform a certain service, that's fine--but it should be handled respectfully and professionally. Unfortunately, this interaction came across as pretentious and unhelpful, and it left a very negative impression of the shop.
