Then again, in the grand scheme of things, particularly when it comes to railway stations, it probably is new. Anyway, this is the station that you DON'T get off at if you want to go to the airport. The reason I mention this is that apparently a lot of people do, and then get really confused when they can't find the airport. It's an okay station otherwise, though they should have a big 'NOT THE AIRPORT' scrawled all over it (though they used to call it Suburban).

However, it is located right in the heart of Newtown, which means getting to its many delights is actually quite easy, and the trains run rather regularly as well. Okay, a number to pass straight through, considering that there are a few express routes along this line, but it is still pretty awesome.

As it turns out, this is no longer the case, and Redfern has definitely become one of the hip and happening parts of Sydney. As for the station, well, it is a fully stocked station where pretty much all of the trains stop on their way through to central, or at least the metro trains do.

The station has cool mosaics on the floor, and a nice design to it. There are monitors telling you the platform info, and plenty of seating along the platform itself. The platforms are outdoors, but covered to provide shade and protection from the elements. Why aren't there any elevators here?! It's a bummer that you have to take the steep, steep stairs for every platform. Also, I don't get why you seemingly don't have to dip your OPAL transit card here, that you can just easily stroll by the card readers, instead of having to go through the turn styles at nearly every other station. Am I missing something here?

(Note: The way to travel for rail, light rail and ferry is to have an opal card). If you need help with the ticket readers, let one of the train folks know so they can help you. Transfers to light rail are clearly marked and easy to follow. The rest room could have been cleaner, but it was free. The exterior looks retro with red brick and has modern touches with the white exterior roof. Finally, there are elevators and escalators here. I know the last time I tried to go thru the subway at Waterloo in London I had to ask a nice young man for help with my suitcase to get it down the escalator, since they didn't have an elevator to use.

Sure, they still have the…read moreold building on the platform, but this seems to be part and parcel of many of Sydney's stations. It is also an inner-city station, but the number of platforms to sort of indicate that trains tend to stop here on a reasonably frequent basis, though at one time I did need to what a while (but it was getting a tad late, and it was a Sunday). However, having a pub next door does help out with that problem a lot.

Museum Station is the stop after Central Station on the Airport Link train line. This station was…read morefirst opened and has signage to resemble those found in the London Underground. It also reminded me of a metro station in Cambridge, MA that I visited while in the Boston area earlier this year which has a similar retro look. The location of this station is very convenient as it is located in the southern end of Sydney CBD right next to Hyde Park. I used this station the most while in Sydney as my hotel was located about a block away from here. It made for easy commuting to and from Sydney Airport as a result. Can't recall if there is a lift here, but I decided to carry my luggage down the stairs as it wasn't too arduous. Unlike Central Station and Town Hall Station, there are only a couple lines that make stops here as there are only two platforms. The T2, which is the Airport Line and the T3. If you are going to other stations in the Sydney CBD, it is convenient to catch a train from here. But if you need to go to Kings Cross and Bondi Junction, you will need to transfer at Central or Town Hall. Found Museum Station to be a pleasant home station to use for my travels everyday while visiting in Sydney. I like how Sydney tries to maintain old structures while implementing new technologies. It is refreshing to see this compared to what happens to buildings like these in the US. It seems here we are more prone to tear a landmark like this down and build a new shiny station to replace it.
