This train station was great! Accessing the trains are easy, as you don't need to get a train card and add money to it. Just tap a card or a phone payment app to get in and out of the train platform areas. Then it was super easy to figure out what platform would lead you to your train. Trains came reliably on time and I was able to get around to the rest of Sydney with no problem. Highly recommend. read more

Okay, while Town Hall station has its charm - well, charm is probably not the best word to describe the place, but still, as an underground station, I liked it. However, I have found that Wynard is much better organised, but then again it has been completely upgraded to make it much much better. Then again, I have found that the elevators can be pretty slow at times, especially when you are attempting to navigate it with a heavy bag of luggage. Still, I have actually found it pretty easy to get around, and the corridors that sprawl out from it make it quite easy to avoid the annoying streets. Remember that scene in The Matrix where they have that insane underground dance party in Zion, the subterranean city and last bastion / hope / repository of mankind? And there are tonnes of people all throbbing and heaving and frotting (look it up) en masse, and weaving your way through them is a nightmare because they're purposeful and purposeless all at once? They filmed that scene at Wynyard station. Not strictly true, not even remotely true, but that's what I think of every time I'm caught up in the throb of peak hour. Man, but I do not miss working in the city and having to sweat and scrap and fight humanity to get anywhere, to dodge ticket inspectors and junkies, beggars and snooty working women in power pantsuits that look at me like I'm something they scraped off the bottom of their shoe. And yet, strangely, I do miss it, because it made me feel a part of something big and vital and out of control. I even miss those horrible 80s-brown tiles. Wynyard station is where the CBD madness starts* in the morning when you're coming from the north shore. As the train closes in to the Wynyard tunnel hordes of commuters stride and inch to the train's doors. You'll see faces that tell you life stories, from people who can't bear the thought to trudge along to their place of work, to the super-busy looking up-themselves business women, to walking suits, to young rebel - you name it, it's here. One day CityRail decided to paint the trusses and girders in aqua (or whatever that turquoise colour is called) and that was probably meant to give Wynyard station its distinguishing edge over the tan (that's some sort of brownish colour) tiles. Well, it didn't. It's clear that Wynyard station's best days are long gone and that it would be time for an upgrade. And who knows, with the construction of Barangaroo and the upgrade of the tunnel to Kent St that might be just underway. Will the actual station see an upgrade too? And what's with the floor tiles. While they've proven hard enough to withstand the millions of footsteps from the high to the low heeled, they're just sh...ugly - or a remainder of bygone beauty. One item of curiosity to me is still this ginormous clock in the area between the gates. Surprisingly it's actually working and not a twice-a-day-correct clock (in other words one that stopped working). Can someone tell me if that clock has historical value? So what makes this an "A-Ok" place? It's its central location, its shops and the fact that you as a foot soldier in a car-stuffed city have an option to exchange motorised madness for shoot-through madness. From Wynyard park to Hunter St, it's just an underground walk. It's another Sydney busy station. Stuffy .... warm ...... uncomfortable..... but for myself serves more as a connecting station so it's kind of easy to put up with. It can get busy at times but for the most part will be fine to manage your way around. There are signs everywhere, so you should never get lost and plenty of shops just in case you need some hydration from the heat down there. If you feel queazy ..... pretend you are Frodo on a mission to thrown that 'Ring' into the hot and unbearable bowls of the earth ..... that may give you the strength to keep pushing forward. This isn't the cleanest station, but it is easily accessible with adequate signage and has a few shops if you're forgotten to pick up food or essential goods. Restrooms are easily accessible and the station is well lit too. This station services buses and trains in Sydney. You'll inevitably end up here if you're going to/from North Sydney. read more

This is a cool spot to get off of to get to some of the nicer areas of downtown Sydney to just wander around. There's a lot of shops in the area as well as some sketchy looking food joints in the station. Skip the food shops and get some eats around the area instead. Greetings, from the wolf of Wynyard, and welcome to my domain, my demesne, my lair if you will. I have always had a lurid fascination with this station. As a kid it was always that weirdly named station before the important one, Town Hall, that you got off to go to the movies, or Darling Harbour, or to do anything in the city! As I grew I knew this not to be true. Wynyard is the jewel train station in the city's crown. It plonks you right where you want to be in the city. Close to the water, close to The Rocks, close to all the things that make this city great - certain bridges, certain houses and certain gardens - to name a few. What station in the world has not 1 but 2 seedy bars built-in to its interior? I've actually been in one of the bars, and it wasn't too bad. My expectations were at ground level though. The Concourse Bar? I'm sorry my friend, the day I visit you is the day I've lost my last clue! The station itself probably needs an overhaul. It's showing its age. From the dodgy shops that line the arcade to the faded egg yolk, shell and white tiling Wynyard looks like a station that's seen too much. Grandfather time has not been kind and dated Wynyard needs a queer eye for the straight guy makeover! The real beauty of the station for me is the underground arcade as it lets me cut out George Street and spits me out halfway down Bridge Street with an easy road cross. I also like that their exits actually give you a decent distance from each other. Taking the big escalator actually puts you hundreds of metres away from the George Street exit and that all comes about from a decision of left-or-right as you come off your platform. I only ever use platforms 3 and 4. Because I'm North Shore line but I can say the trains come with great regularity though I do wish there was more "via Macquarie Park" trains as the ratio is about 1 to 3 or 4 "via Gordon" in the afternoon, whereas in the morning coming in that role is reversed. I think if the station got an overhaul, cleaned itself up a bit, washed the faded robes, and dusted off the crown, I'd be more inclined to rate it higher. I think too if they put useful shops in the arcades and not junk filler they might get better through traffic. read more

New job, new station. I've moved down the line a little from Town Hall to Wynyard. I have been putting off this review for a while because Wynyard is currently being ripped apart for a major renovation and it seems a little unfair to review a construction site. The reality though is that no matter how shiny they make the concourse, and no matter how many flash new shops they put in (why the heck does everything these days need a "retail experience"? Can't it just be a train station?), the main problems with Wynyard - overcrowded, hot, narrow platforms choked with a seething, smelly mass of humanity at peak hours, just can't be solved short of demolishing half the CBD to rebuild them. Peak hour platforms at Wynyard are like decending into one of the more loathesome nether hells. As part of construction, they have moved all the loos to behind the ticket gates so unless you have your ticket, no toilet for you. They have done that at Town Hall as well and I suspect its a deliberate strategy to make the stations less attractive to the homeless folks. Wynyard used have dozens of people sleeping in every corner. I know its a harsh thing to say but I'm kind of glad they have moved out. I know they need somewhere to sleep but its hard to be sympathetic to their plight after witnessing a guy taking a dump on the escalators down from Wynyard park late one night (yes.. on the escallators... the actual moving part... It did not end well). Anyway, I hope as part of the massive reconstruction budget, they put aside some money to provide some proper services for those folks and didn't just turf them out into the park. The artists drawings of the new stattion look nice. I'm sure it will be nice and shiny for about 10 minutes until the seething masses return it to an even shade of dingy grey. The new tunnel down to Barangaroo will be nice. It means I can get to work on a rainy day without getting wet. But really, they are re-paving the road to hell. The journey may be a little more plesant but the destination stays the same. read more

I see more characters around this train station than any other. Maybe I just pay more attention here, who knows? It's all I can do not to scream at the people in the red or blue tshirts trying to shove a free gym pass in my hand. "Look at me! I am not your target demographic!" And the guy with the gray T-shirt, shorts, and bare feet dancing outside "all I need is a dollar, a dollar, a dollar, does anyone have a dollar, a dollar, a dollar?" I feel for him as he's been trying to get that one dollar for years now. The station itself is older and in need of a face lift, but it's pretty easy to get in and out of. There's not one, but TWO $2 shops right at the gates for all your office decorating and theme-partying needs. Seriously, I'm putting someone's kids through college with the amount of streamers, balloons, banners, wall decs, and flags I buy there. The layout is fantastic with exits that will take you in all directions- up to York for some great coffee? Stop and do some grocery shopping on the way. Or head on out to George, and be sure to stop for some Maccas or diamonds before you leave. Better yet, head on into the met centre for lollies, health food, groceries, shoes, or a pretty decent food court. Really, the possibilities are endless. read more
