I'm not sure how long ago it was, but there was a time when you basically did not get off the train at this station, despite the fact that many people eventually did. As it turns out, this is no longer the case, and Redfern has definitely become one of the hip and happening parts of Sydney. As for the station, well, it is a fully stocked station where pretty much all of the trains stop on their way through to central, or at least the metro trains do. read more

Where the Redfern grows... This train station is one stop off from Central Station, with an old retro look to it, and lots of platforms to get where you wanna go. The station has cool mosaics on the floor, and a nice design to it. There are monitors telling you the platform info, and plenty of seating along the platform itself. The platforms are outdoors, but covered to provide shade and protection from the elements. Why aren't there any elevators here?! It's a bummer that you have to take the steep, steep stairs for every platform. Also, I don't get why you seemingly don't have to dip your OPAL transit card here, that you can just easily stroll by the card readers, instead of having to go through the turn styles at nearly every other station. Redfern Station is reminiscent of Central Station as the train platforms are covered, but open air. It isn't the big labyrinth that Central is though, but it seems like you need to take a staircase to reach all of the platforms here. The location is convenient if you are going to Redfern as it is across the street from the main shopping district of the area. The station is also convenient to the Australian Technology Park and Carriageworks. Though for the life of me, I could not find the latter venue to check out its farmers market which was my reason for getting off at Redfern in the first place. As for amenities, I like that the station does have restroom facilities here. Otherwise, it is a rather regular station though the station's brick facade is nice to look at. Redfern Station is alright, though there is apparently an issue with the station having no lifts. Should you need one, it may make more sense to travel by bus to Redfern instead. read more

Redfern is the second busiest station in the city after Central It services all lines except the Airport line and is the closest station to Sydney University. If you're not going to the airport and are closer to Redfern than Central, it's worth using Redfern. However, the only problem with Redfern is there are no lifts. Anywhere. Period. They are building one that will service two out of the twelve platforms, but who knows when that will be done. Even then this is won't be a station friendly to the elderly or mobility impaired. Overall, it gets three stars for being close to the city and services by almost every line you could want. read more

This is a busy station to change trains for different locations or lines. The area needs a facelift as the stairs are steep and I couldn't see a lift anywhere. The information boards, although electronic, are at the top of the stairs. So don't try and catch trains quickly by using trip lite ...you'll never get the connecting train...maybe the athlete will! This station is used for many students who attend Sydney University. The walk from Sydney Uni and to the train during the winter evenings is not well lit and unless travelling with a group you could feel uncomfortable. read more

I love Redfern station, I really do. I live across from it, I go there every day, but gosh darn it it is not a great station. Do you need a lift for your pram or wheelchair? Too bad, there isn't one (on all but two platforms, which seems to be an improvement from previous reviews). Do you need to make it onto a morning train? Good luck--it's pretty hit or miss, and the 2 minutes until the train comes usually ranges between 30 seconds and 7 minutes, which doesn't make for very reliable morning commutes. The station recently installed the new screens which I find really difficult to read compared to the old ones with the blue background. There is also trackwork almost every weekend if you want to go anywhere west. One thing I will say is the bathrooms are really consistently clean which is a nice change from some of the other stations. read more

In the early history of the railways, the trains heading west terminated at "Redfern". It was located south of Devonshire Street and opened in 1855, in the area of "Cleveland Fields" which later became Cleveland Street, going into Sydney. This original "Redfern" station was a single wooden platform and a corrugated iron shed. In 1876 the new Eveleigh train station was opened one kilometer to the west, at the present Redfern station site. In 1906 it was renamed Redfern. The train stop for Sydney University. Gritty now and always has been. A lot of Aboriginal people have always lived in the area. Never liked it here around the station - I don't think anyone does. You never felt very safe in these parts. I spent too much time here already for one lifetime, so now I'll move on. read more

Overground station with few platforms. Trains are not synchronized so be prepare to run if are changing at Redfern and you have 1 min to run upstairs and then downstairs again. Good luck if you make it. And no lifts so you need to choose - run or help granny with her shopping. read more

Redfern station - not my fav station of all but it's like that dingy little corner bar that you go back time and time again because it's so convenient. Most lines pass through redfern so I find myself here quite a few times after hanging out late in chippendale or after studio 107 gigs. Like what all the other folks said, there are no lifts in redfern so it's not the best station to get off if you are on crutches (I've seen people climbing stairs on it.. Not easy or painless). But hey it's next to Sydney university and you get a fair amount of uni students streaming through this station during the day. Most shops around the uni side of the station close at 5pm so your best bet to get some food would be the other side of redfern. read more

Overall, Redfern station is in pretty bad condition. I mean, the platforms aren't even long enough to fit a normal 8 carriage train! This means that the passengers in the last 2 carriages need to change carriages to actually get off at Redfern, or must board the train at the first 6 carriages. There is also NO wheelchair accessibility as there are no elevators. This means that passengers that require wheelchair accessible functions need to get off at Central Station, so this is pretty inconvenient. The stairs are very steep and can be extremely packed and pushy during peak hours. This isn't great for people in a rush and means that Redfern station would be unsuitable for the elderly as there's at least 40 steep steps to get up/down. Redfern station definitely needs an upgrade. Thousands of University students need to use this station daily (including myself) as well as members of the public; so it would be worth updating the facilities... read more

Close to Australian Technology Park, easy to get to, NOT easy to park a car at so just walk or, hey, catch a train.
