I had a very pleasant four-night stay at the Central Hotel over the 2017/2018 New Year weekend.
The Central Hotel is true to its name. The hotel is wonderfully located within the Dublin city center. Bars, restaurants, shops, museums, Trinity College, public transport, and many other attractions are just steps or a few minutes' walk away from the hotel. The Heuston Train Station is a 25-minute walk or a few minutes in a taxi, and the 747 Airlink bus from the airport stops within a five-minute walk from the hotel.
Check-in was incredibly smooth (front desk staff were great throughout my stay) and after receiving my keycard, I was up to my room on the top floor of the hotel within a couple of minutes. There are two lifts. My room was quite small and was in desperate need of a fresh coat of paint, but for just myself it was serviceable. The bed was extremely comfortable with two end tables and lamps. Additionally, the room was equipped with four mirrors, two arm chairs, a desk and chair, and a standing lamp that was the main light source for the room. The coffee and tea station was well stocked and the electric kettle worked very quickly. The biscuits provided were a nice touch. The closet space was ample for one, but would likely be a squeeze for two if you wanted to hang coats and other items of clothing, though a luggage rack is provided to prop up a suitcase. The heaters, which were on full blast when I first entered the room, are thankfully adjustable. I did not turn them back on for the remainder of my stay and my room stayed quite warm. The WiFi was an open network. The internet speed was fine for casual internet browsing, though video streaming was hit or miss. The television was mounted on the wall and was, laughably, the size of a computer screen and had some discoloration issues. A larger, modern television, faster WiFi, and USB power ports placed by the bed and at the desk would be welcome technological updates.
While in the room, doors could be heard slamming in the hallway, as well as the occasional murmur of conversations through the walls, but I suppose this is to be expected in an older building. If you need peace and quiet, though, this might not be the best accommodation option for you. I usually returned to the room quite late in the evening after going out to the bars and the night porter always promptly let me in, though a keycard system at the main door would eliminate the need for this.
The bathroom was in need of some rethinking and repairs. The shower was incredibly small with awkwardly closing doors, the water temperature was difficult to adjust, and the drain always backed up after more than a couple of minutes. If you are a large person you would find it nearly impossible to use. The tile in the bathroom was fine, but some of it needed to be resealed. The vanity was a good size, though separate spouts for hot and cold water made it feel extremely dated. The drain plug for the sink was integrated into the basin, and so you had to stick your hand into dirty water to drain the sink if it was plugged up. However, except for the shower, these were minor inconveniences for me.
The housekeeping service was very good. On the morning of New Year's Day, I put out my "Do Not Disturb" sign, and though I missed the scheduled housekeeping service for the day, fresh towels were left outside my door. Marvelous! The only hiccup was that housekeeping came by the morning that I was checking out at around 8:30am. Thankfully I was already awake and went to the door and told them that I would not need services this morning, but I wondered why they did not have my room on a list to clean after the noon check-out time.
Overall, a few minor updates and renovations to the rooms would make a huge difference in the quality of this hotel. However, the location is excellent and just based on this I would definitely stay again! read more
