This is a restaurant within the walls of the 12th Century Cardigan castle, catering for breakfast and lunch only, plus Sunday lunches. It also provides catering for events in the castle. It's in a modern, airy building with glass picture windows, making the most of the location perched up on the castle walls. There's also some outdoor seating.
The breakfast menu options are £6 to £9, and include a full cooked breakfast and it's vegetarian equivalent. Lunch can be a light option of soup & bread (£7.50) to full roast dinners and steaks at £15. A lot of people also seem to stop off for coffee and cake or a cream tea. On the ground floor is a delicatessen selling some of their menu items.
We stopped off for lunch and went for the Welsh Rarebit. A Welsh speciality, this is basically posh cheese on toast, albeit with grated cheese mixed with beer. It came with a small side salad of mixed leaves, bulgur wheat, cauliflower and broad beans.
The food was fine with a decent portion, though at £11 (bacon is £2 extra) your are definitely paying for the location. It'd be 4 out 5 for the food, but for the slow service (25 minutes from ordering) and awful piped music (80s disco hits) which completely spoiled any ambience. Who on earth thought that musical choice was a good one for a lunch venue in a 12th Century castle with an 18th Century garden??
Our waitress was very pleasant though. read more
