Delicious Caffé Dàrte Italian coffee - yum!!!
    Ron M.

I pass this place all the time but I've ignored it until today. I stopped by to give it a try and was pleasantly surprised to find Italian espresso that is on par with my favorite coffee places - French Bakery in downtown Bellevue and Storyville. Rich flavor that tastes delicious! I also got a chocolate chip cookie which comes in a bag - usually a bad thing in my opinion - and was pleasantly surprised to find that these cookies are made by Seattle Favorite. If you aren't familiar these cookies aren't too soft and aren't hard, nor are they overly sweet. It's like the Goldilocks cookie that's just right. While not as good as the amazing fresh baked goods at Storyville, I did like them better than French Bakery's cookies. This place is worth a try and I'll definitely be back when I'm in the mood for some delicious premium Italian coffee!

My whole family used to go here, and only here, for our wake up juice. Morning barista couldn't be on time at all. Thankfully there is competition. They, at least, act as though they want our business.

Came here for a latte and really enjoyed it! Nice location and easy access close to the main street. They also have different pastries and cookies to choose from.

Wonderful service and super quick. I ordered a white chocolate mocha and it tasted great! No complaints here, also I had a snickerdoodle cookie which was perfect. Good spot to get gas and a coffee to go.

White chocolate mocha + white chocolate macademia! It was a white choco heavenly combo (:

Curiosity eventually won, and I'm glad it did. First off, the place itself is on the smaller side, maybe around 15 tables plus a bar top, but it's well organized and efficient. You're immediately greeted by an employee who asks how many are in your party, and before you know it, you're seated with a menu and water in hand. Smooth operation so far. I went all in and ordered the red velvet waffles (because obviously), paired with a milkshake, and my partner ordered the corned beef hash. The wait time was about 20-25 minutes, which honestly wasn't bad at all considering how full the place was. When the food arrived, it was clear why people keep coming back, the portions are generous and easily shareable. The red velvet waffles were amazing. Rich, fluffy, and absolutely worth the order. The corned beef hash was clearly made from scratch, you could tell the corned beef was hand-cut, along with the potatoes and peppers. No mystery meat here. It's served with crispy hash browns and an egg cooked however you like, which is exactly how it should be. Service was great too, super friendly, genuinely nice, and very on top of things. You can tell this place has been around for a while because the staff all seem to have their rhythm down. There's a groove, and it works. All in all, this is a solid spot for breakfast or lunch, and now I understand why it's always busy. Just one important note: they're closed on Tuesdays, so plan accordingly. Enjoy!

But definitely an all American diner experience. Fresh ingredients for your veggie omelet, waffles and pancakes at the ready, and hot coffee on request. They also have a very decent lunch menu as well. I recommend the 12th Man Blue Cheeseburger (with Bacon)! Give them a look, and of course, read the backside of the menu too for a few affordable surprises! Be advised, it is self seating in the early parts of the day, so it can be understandably busy on weekends, but don't let that stop you! The very kind and attentive staff will be on their way! You order at the front before being seated which means food arrives shortly after sitting down. With that noted, I wouldn't return to wait that long. First visit, to try a relatively famous spot, sure. Inside is a bit tight, but conversation can be had. My friends got the lumpia-silog and bistek-silog. Lumpia was tasty, but not particularly outstanding. Bistek was dry. The beef was tough to chew, seasoned alright on the outside but likely overcooked if not old. I opted for the oxtail silog which was delicious but pricey. Oxtail Silog - for $29, this plate definitely gets a double take. After waiting in the hour line, I figured I should commit for a tasty meal. Oxtail comes in a side bowl alongside a bit of hearty broth which the rice absorbs well. Meat is tender, falls off the bone, but pulling around oxtail bones isn't the simplest, so definitely have to bite around crevices. All in all, this plate was delicious but think it comes with a huge tourist tax I've had better value for oxtail plates. Ube Pancake Stack - four sizeable pancakes. Some pictures, including my own, don't do these justice. I can definitely get behind the hype. They're drenched in a rich ube sauce and there's plenty to go around. Honestly the ube flavor is present on the pancakes, but it feels relatively faint because the sauce is extremely sweet and flavorful, minimizing the pancake taste and expanding the gap between flavors. That being said, I think I would enjoy the pancakes with less sauce (or preferably, on the side).

I'll be honest--the service felt a bit odd when we first walked in. We were told we could wait a while to get seated at the dinning area or that we could seat ourselves at the bar. Since it was our first time, I wasn't sure if that meant the actual bar counter or tables in the bar area. When I asked for clarification, there was a bit of an awkward pause before someone finally explained we could sit at a table in the bar section. That said, once we got settled, the experience improved. The server who took care of us was very kind and attentive. I ordered my usual go-to at breakfast spots: chicken fried steak with a biscuit. It was really good--definitely hearty and comforting without being overly greasy. That said, it is a heavy meal (fried food plus gravy), so be prepared for a post-brunch nap. The biscuit looked a little underwhelming at first, but it actually tasted great. The overall vibe of the place is very much a local dive bar feel, and the service style matches that. As long as you go in with the right expectations, it makes for an enjoyable, laid-back brunch. Also worth noting--there's a decent amount of parking in the back, which is always a plus. Overall, a solid spot for a casual, no-frills brunch.

Right in the heart of Newcastle, it felt like a true neighborhood gem. The owner, Jen, is an absolute dream, and her staff reflected that same warmth and care. Every visit felt welcoming, thoughtful, and special. This place will be greatly missed, and I'm so grateful for the many wonderful meals I had here over the years. The burrata was always outstanding, no matter the season or preparation -- somehow familiar yet always fresh and creative. I say good riddance. Clearly lots of people liked it, but it was a poor fit for the neighborhood. Some of the food was very good sometimes. But it was uneven. Some people reported great service, but many others reported very poor service. Some of the pictures showed very beautifully presented dishes. And all of it was very expensive. So, sometimes excellent but uneven food quality, sometimes excellent but uneven service quality, and all of it top dollar? This is a place that belonged in downtown Seattle. Downtown Bellevue would have worked too, especially the little strip of old downtown Bellevue on Main street. It would have fit right in there, probably doing gangbuster business right now. But Newcastle?? C'mon. This is deep suburbia. We like good food and good service, but we're generally less patient with uneven quality than downtown hipsters. And we like a good value. After all, a common reason given for high prices in downtown restaurants in Seattle or Bellevue is the expensive rent. But The Coalman's Newcastle rent should have been less. If it wasn't, then choosing that location over downtown was all the more strange. The Coalman was at best an awkward fit for this neighborhood. Here's hoping the next tenant is a better fit. The Coalman's name derived from the old Newcastle coal mine. Given the restaurant's farm-to-table emphasis, why not call a downtown Bellevue version "The Strawberry Field", since Bellevue used to be mostly strawberry farms before WWII?
