The Caxton Bar is the St Ermine's hotel bar. The St Ermine's offers a free cocktail with a Yelp "check in". Redemption of this turned into a very bad experience. So incensed was the bartender with the hotel, I felt uncomfortable to return to the bar. One the second night we avoided the bar and sat in another room with service from the floor staff. When we reordered a round at the end of the night, the server "mistakenly" thought we all had ordered another round. When she came with an extra cocktail she took quite umbrage to have to return one. The worse part of the night, was she presented us a check with the unordered cocktail to which we nearly paid. When we reminded her we didn't reorder that one, she presented another check with one less drink. Closer inspection showed that both checks were printed at the same time. Confused? She had hope to rip us off but was prepared we might catch it. AVOID THIS PLACE. THEY ARE SLICK AND LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO RIP OFF. Came here for a late business lunch with a work colleague and really enjoyed the experience. The decor is stylish and sleek, and the staff helped us through the menu. I really like the set up for the Grill menu. Choose your meat and then choose your side dishes. I had the smaller portion of sirloin and some very nice purple broccoli on the side. The broccoli was served with nice crunchy hazelnuts, very nice touch. One of the other diners had the fish in a saffron sauce. This plate was absolutely stunning to both look at and to smell. Yum! Decent price with a small, not daunting menu. Great for a business meal. read more

We were staying at St. Ermins so the location was convenient but the decor here is upscale casual so it's nice after a long day of walking around, but still feels like a nice restaurant. The food was wonderful and I don't think we ate a single thing that we weren't blown away by. Also, the bar here made the BEST gin and tonics I have ever had anywhere so Kudos!!! read more

Came in on a relatively quiet Friday after a long flight from the US; I was starving and felt like an experience so I went ahead and tried out the 11 course tasting menu. Absolutely everything was outstanding. The staff did a great job, the food was amazing, and the restaurant did a really interesting concept (which I haven't seen before) where a different staff member brought out each course. This culminated in the head chef himself, Adam Handling, coming out to my table to chat while he handmade the tiramisu course with liquid nitrogen and what looked like a full chemistry set . I recently booked a table for dinner at Adam Handling at Caxton, well known as the runner-up in Masterchef: The Professionals 2013, who has also gained many awards since. We both went for the tasting menu, which consisted of six courses priced at £70 per person. To start off, we were served a loaf of warm sourdough bread. I usually try not to overdo it with the bread course at the beginning, but that chicken butter and duck liver parfait was just too good to let it go to waste. The doughnuts with dressed crab were tasty little mouthfuls albeit with a slightly denser texture then I was expecting. I would have gladly had a whole plate to myself. The beetroot snack were little delicate wafer rolls with a sweet and slightly sharp beetroot filling. It was really light and crisp, and dusted in a beetroot powder. The chicken skin was very moreish, and a favourite for both of us. The first course was the salmon, with pea, sweet and sour wasabi, apple and dill. A bit of molecular liquid nitrogen show as our server brought over a pot with frozen violas and poured the contents over our dishes. I do love tartare dishes, and did enjoy the lamb tartare, served with beets, fermented red pepper, chilli and sorrel. I just wished that there was more. The chicken and lobster was served with a fragrant yellow curry and palm sugar sauce. The lobster was fresh with a nice, springy texture, and the chicken really tender. The ashed beef rump is apparently his signature dish, served with burnt artichokes and cabbage. A tender piece of beef with a lovely pink centre, and you could really taste the strong smokey flavours in it. For dessert, we were first served the apple with cucumber and gin, which was very cooling and refreshing. A nice way to cleanse the palate after the rich courses that were had before. Wonderful food and service. I recommend ordering off the tapas/seasonal menu, as the food is really inventive and delicious. I ordered off both the tapas and classic menus, and liked the tapas more. The complimentary "chicken butter" that comes with your meal is INCREDIBLE! I could have eaten a whole bowl. The cracker with mackeral and the chicken liver mousse are also very good. The veal schnitzel is only OK (mine was tough and the breading quickly fell off) and the mash was a bit salty. The service here is top notch. Wonderful atmosphere, too. read more

I actually really like what they've done with the space, it's beautifully designed with quirky little touches like the lightbulbs being enclosed in glass boxes. I was talking to someone who works in the area and she said there were very few nice places for taking clients so this should be a welcome addition. The only downside was they seemed to only have one ladies toilet, an oversight surely?Standing in the corridor is not a good look. We were there on their opening night and got to try lots of little canapes. The fish ones in particular stood out, I loved the combination of mackeral with beetroot and horseradish cream. The steak topped with a fried potato wasn't quite as successful as my piece of steak was chewy but the fried potato was divine, best chip I've had in ages. They also had interesting breads, good chewy baguette and sesame crispbreads that were more interesting than your normal run of the mill offerings. I think they might bake them inhouse. Apparently they also have a terrace which will be lovely if summer decides to return! read more

After seeing chef Adam on MasterChef Professionals I had to try this place and surely it did meet my expectations. I went with a friend and shared an entree, scallops with chicken and peanuts. I thought it was a terribly risky combination (scallops with chicken!!??) but it worked. The scallops were beautifully cooked and the chicken melted in the mouth. The peanuts added some indonesian flavour to the dish. I had Cod as a main and it was amazing. The fish was cooked to perfection and it had a dash of mash that was heavenly. My friend had ashed beef and the flavour-texture combo was a very nice surprise. As a desert, the ginger panacotta standed out, with textures carefully combined. All in all, the chef is a texture genius and he tries some interesting flavour combinations. Service was excellent, friendly and caring but not annoying and the room itself is nice and quiet. They also have private rooms for groups. At £55 each before wine it does not come cheap but the experience is definitely worth a try. read more

More or less empty at seven pm on a weekday night. Got a table quickly. Olive bread was delicious - green herb butter was odd with the choices of bread. The wagyu burger was just ok - fries were not at all crispy. Spouse had a rib eye. Said it tasted like the smoke from the grill and not the meat. Wondered if it was covering a less than choice cut of meat. The mash was a point of contention - enjoyed by one and hated by the other. Must have been a texture issue. Overall, an expensive way to have an ok meal when your feet are tired from a long day touring London. read more

Visited with my mum for a Mothers Day treat. We had the most fantastic meal. The service was perfect, the prosecco and wine was terrific and the food... Amuse bouche was a sour dough bread with a chicken butter and a duck parfait. Both of these were just delicious. The rabbit terrine starter and slow cooked beef main were also fantastic. The highlight of the meal was the sea bream main with leeks in a variety of ways. It really was just beautiful as a dish. The yuzu dessert was balanced a little towards the sweet rather than the tart for us but not enough to give the restaurant any less than five stars. A really first rate lunch. Came here on a Saturday night having got a late reservation. This has been going for about a year and the chef Adam Handling was a runner up in Masterchef the Professionals. We arrived at 9pm as per the booking but although we walked though a dining room with lots of empty tables, we had to wait for 20 minutes to be seated. My slightly dirty vodka martini was very good though. The restaurant is quite large with partitioned off areas which makes it feel smaller than it is. No-one was really that dressed up as it's part of a hotel so there were families staying there who had come down for dinner in their jeans. We ordered the 11 course tasting menu with the paired wines, and you also received a free signed book by the chef. The service was generally good and friendly and we even met the chef for one of the courses which was a lovely surprise. There were very few dishes that I actually liked, let alone rated. The scallop was divine and the beef wasn't bad but otherwise everything was a bit average and some courses not that tasty. The wines weren't very good either, and were very weighted towards whites; there was only one red during the whole meal. They also forgot to give me the book but I collected it the next day as we happened to have stayed nearby. Overall not very impressive. I wished I had just gone for a standard two courses with a wine of my choosing. I won't be back. read more

The cooking was overall very capable, very contemporary in style and tidy presentation. While is not quite Michelin standard, I believe Adam as a chef has what it takes to progress, judging from some of the moments of brilliant of my meal. Breakfast was not good; fish and chips were yummy. This restaurant serves the St. Ermin's Hotel and we ate here twice over a lengthy stay. The breakfast was very forgettable: Eggs Florentine were decent but the English muffin was bland and the preserves were not fresh. The tea was not loose leaf and very disappointing. Ate here last night after wandering around the neighborhood looking for alternative places to eat. Normally, the restaurants at hotels are fine. But this one was the exception. The hostess fit us in and boy were we lucky. The food is really great. From the fish and chips to bbq goat to the small salads and vegetables, everything was very good. The one small disappointment was the popcorn for dessert, but I will definitely go back and highly recommend going! read more

Went for the wine pairing option which was good, but it would have been nicer to know a little more about each wine - sparkling white from Kent, white from Croatia and Portugal and France...some more background would get my 5 stars. Expensive for what it is but they do a nice job of justifying the cost. The cocktails are great. The desserts are wonderful. The main courses ranked from ok to incredible depending on what was ordered. The cauliflower tagliatelle was incredible. Everything else -wild bass, monkfish and ribeye steak was pretty good but not as 'unique' as the cauliflower tagliatelle. In between 2.5 and 2.9 stars, really. But sadly the next option would be three stars, and "A-OK" would not be a good way to describe my experience. This was I believe my fourth time coming to this restaurant; the service was never great, but the food was always good and the prices reasonable enough. But after tonight I don't expect to be returning anytime soon. I was seated, and my extended family and I were quickly given menus. Seconds after we were asked for our drink order, which we hadn't decided on, so they gave us a few more minutes. The Caxton Grill's definition of "a few more minutes" was about fifteen minutes. To order water. And we also ordered some appetizers and a Highland Coffee, too. Well, about twenty minutes go by, and we have not received our water yet. The place isn't empty, but it is definitely not full (Probably I would say about three other tables other then ourselves, and a couple of people at the bar. I don't think the place was a third of the way full). We finally get our drinks, but still no food and we have been here for quite some time. Then about another twenty minutes go by, and still we have not received our food, most of which would not take really any time to prepare what so ever, and none of which would take that long. Then, someone comes out who I would assume is close to being a manger, but I don't know. She asked which one of us ordered the Highland Coffee, and then explained that the reason for the wait was because they were out of cream. Our whole order is stalled because they ran out of cream? And they did not think to tell us this until now? Needless to say, we didn't ask for anything in replacement of the Highland Coffee, as we had been there close to an hour. After a couple more minutes, most of our food comes. All but one bowl of olives, as we ordered two bowls. Also, we don't have plates. We don't ask for the plates, but do ask for the other bowl of olives. The food turned out to be pretty good--but not worth the wait. It takes a long time, and we don't get our other bowl of olives. So, we ask again, and the waiter seems really confused. I think (and am like 95% sure) that he forgot. Long story short, we get our olives. And then what do we find in the bowl? That one of the olives appears to be half-eaten. Well. I myself can't really think of another explanation. When we at last pay, we realize they gave us the olives off, and five dollars off the rest of the meal. With the service charge included. Personally, I am surprised they didn't change us for the Highland Coffee. So, if you aren't in a hurry (and don't mind your food being partly eaten sometimes) this is a fine place to go, but if you want to leave within the hour, it is definitely best to avoid this place. We went to Caxton Grill based on Yelp reviews, location and menu. We lived in London for several years and had returned for a visit, we reserved a table for six with our kids on a weeknight. We showed up a bit early, they sat us for a drink in the bar area, which is very nice, and they were very attentive. We had two children with us, the ambiance was nice and allowed us to have a quiet table for six in the corner by the window. Unfortunately, the service and food during dinner was disappointing, despite the restaurant not being busy. We were there quite some time before food started to come out, and unfortunately, one adult's appetizer came out (of two he had ordered), with the children's mains. One adult was left waiting with a then cold prawn appetizer, and the kids started eating whilst the others waited. It got to the point that we went to find the wait staff to inquire about the rest of our food. The children were finished as we got our appetizers, not ideal...they sat quietly for almost another hour while the adults had their food. The burger was not eaten, the salmon was raw in the center and not eaten. The mac and cheese was covered with some kind of black spice, and the children didn't like the taste. I agreed after trying a nibble to be sure they weren't just being difficult. My veal was sitting in a lot of oil and was very greasy as a result. Unfortunately, I would not consider returning. The hostess chased us down after we asked for the bill without ordering dessert or coffee, knowing that we were displeased and asking for feedback, which I appreciated, and which we gave. She is correct - they can't improve if they don't understand the issues. Of note, a mandatory gratuity was included in the bill, which we otherwise would not have included based on our experience. read more
