Slept so well here!
Katy D.

I chose Cave Springs for my personal retreat, a time to get away close to nature with books, journals and binoculars. During my morning walk, I saw an eagle in its nest on the other side of the river. The area has so much to explore! I stayed in one of the renovated motel rooms and loved the comfort and decor! I definitely will encourage my friends to visit Cave Springs for a comfortable, convenient getaway! Also the staff were very friendly and helpful. Looking forward to returning!

Love the differ options of stays from hotel, rustic to modern cabins to airstreams! We opt for a modern cabin with a hot tub Its in the heart of Dunsmuir easily walkable to resturant and all the waterfalls !!Definetly a must visit/stay! Staff are attentive and responsive texts! I do have some recommendation on the coffee offer at the cabin hoping there's option for more of a dark roast too and a bit more privacy wall for the hot tub !

Living room in Walnut Cabin. Large and spacious but truly mid century vintage bathroom and kitchen.

5 stars for the stylish details in upgrading this property. The choice of exterior colors, cabins named after trees with chic signage. We stayed in the Walnut Cabin. Spacious, for sure, but a bathroom, kitchen, wallpaper and flooring straight out of the 1970's or earlier. Updated area rugs, artwork and furniture certainly help to cover up the "worn in" details. Perks were the well stocked kitchenware, comfy bed, stylish decor, nice bedding and towels including the cute kitchen towel. I would suggest perusing some of the other accommodations which appear to be fully renovated. Remember that you are situated here between Highway 5, the main North/South west coast artery and the railroad if you are a light sleeper. (A sleep mask and earplugs are provided bedside) A note to the handyman, please tighten the wobbly, loose railing up to the front door.

We stayed at the Hawthorne modern Cabin at Cave Springs and loved it! The décor was modern yet cozy, with comfy beds, a full kitchen, washer/dryer, and even a picnic table with a barbecue grill outside. The property is 5-10 mins walking distance to the botanical garden, and the staff were super helpful with local tips. At night, the string lights around the grounds add a great touch. Only thing missing were the bocce and cornhole pieces, but overall it was a fantastic stay. I'd definitely come back!!!

Airstream lodging option.
Leonor R.

Perfect airstream lodging in between our hikes and outings to Burney Falls, Mt Shasta and in between. Great food and coffee available within a mile!! Yaks(burgers) and Bee Kind (Coffee). Cave Springs also had Live music and wonderful outdoor space with hammocks, seating, & fire pits. We had a fabulous time! Thank you!

Our Airstream that we stayed in at Cave Spring

We love this place!!! The grounds are clean, the employees are the friendliest, and the Airstreams are so cool. The price is reasonable and it's so much more fun than a boring motel room. We will be back!!

Next to tiny home Beech
Melissa P.

Would not recommend the tiny home 'Beech' unless you're a very light packer! As there was no closet space or anywhere to put clothes. Barely any space to even set our bags down. There was also construction going on to the side of us and overgrown brush outside the tiny home so our view was very unsightly... I think they should keep up the grounds/landscape better but that's just my honest opinion. (Especially because that's how it's portrayed on the website.) Went to the office and Oli helped us move which we were appreciative of. But in order to be comfortable in our space we had to downgrade and got moved to a hotel room which was less $. The only other option was a very old rustic cabin... I had an injury in July and had to reschedule, they kept that peak rate plus charged a $70 fee. So overall paid about $850 for 3 nights in a motel room that we drove 4 1/2 hours to get to, that was painful

Sage

Visited Shasta for the 4th of July weekend, and booked Sage. On the first night there was a lot of ants coming up into the kitchen and I was quite worried. However we were able to get some ant spray and didn't have an issue at all the rest of the week. There is no maid service, so you have to get fresh towels or sheets or whatnot every day during office hours. The AC worked wonderfully which was really necessary in the heat. Super convenient location next to the mossbrae falls hike and a cafe and yaks. Would definitely come back next year, maybe a bit earlier!

Airstreams

I stayed one night in an airstream here and it was very cozy! I would love to stay in one of the more modern cabins. The airstream was a little more cramped than I expected but it was a unique experience. It wasn't quite as clean as I would have liked (hair in the shower and some dishes were dirty) but it was very well stocked with soap, dishes, and pans. The check in process was very simple. I received an email with a code to use and they were very responsive by text for anything I needed. It is also conveniently located to a lot of hiking and restaurants. Great place to stop off I-5!

View from one of several hammocks in the public space

Fantastic rustic resort!! Airstream trailer with bathroom/shower, linens, Keurig machine, everything you need! Also cabins from darling tiny 1923 (restored) ones to modern cabins some with hot tubs on a private deck overlooking Sac River. Espresso food Truck with breakfast paninis every morning (except Wed.) pool! Hammocks! Fire pits! Friendly staff - all super clean and cute and comfy! I love a vintage vibe (with great coffee!) and this place is to die for!

Garden area

Nice clean rooms, nice garden area and pool. Easy access to highway 5. Rooms have air conditioning. There are also small cabins (no Air conditioning ) you can stay in and kids play area . Dog friendly. Close to Sacramento River .

Just got home, from staying in the rustic cabins. Enjoyed a lovely time with my family. Love all the upgrades to the rustic cabins. We stayed in 16 and 17. The cabins were poorly equipped and not real clean. Never had the problem before, I know it's towards the end of the season but still. The water was turned off for a duration due to a busted pipe. Will be back up November.

I am a tad arrogant, having access to the some of the best cuisine by living close to San Francisco. Now to be fair, their price point reflects what you see sitting on the plate before you. The service is polite. Ambiance is fun. I ran around in these train cars as a child while vacationing with family 30 years ago. My advice would be, go with what works. The previous owner had it going on, knew the territory so to speak. This place has "warning Will Robbinson" all over it, like sushi in Kansas. A tuckered out Fly Fisherman would prefer a great steak and baked potato. No shame in that, it is the pillar of American dining. If I want foo-foo, I will go to SFO. But then again, I think the food in Paris is "OK", (specifically their entrees) Paris has great bread, crackers and cheese. Alright, pastry, baguets, and fromage. All the offerings in Italy are amazing and the only thing to eat in the UK are chippies. The best "foo foo food" was Betlenut Pan-Asian on Union Street in San Francisco. Lost their lease however. THAT was the bom-d-idly. Hey if you want a fabulous steak, try Jacks in DT Redding. Great place, but you will wait an hour, maybe two. But it is worth the wait. Has an interesting provenance, the location and building itself, was a house of ill repute back in the FDR days, so the legend goes. Cafe Maddalena in Dunsmuir is excellent as well. This faux fusion/euro/cubano/too cool to be true... might make 2 years max. It is the epitome of "The fastest way to make a small fortune, out of a large fortune is to start a restaurant." Inherited money, I can smell it burning in the kitchen.

The staff informed us that the lake had been drained to help fight recent California wildfires, so that made me feel a little bit better. Anyways, the cabin was clean and everything you would need for a nice relaxing stay. My biggest qualm was that the hot water did not work so we were not able to take a shower (unless it was ice water cold). And the Internet did not work - not for browsing or streaming pleasure but simply for cell phone service in such a remote area. All in all, a decent spot to stay in the Shasta Lake area.

So let me take another tack and make sure that this is the place for you. First off, Mountain Meadow Resort isn't for everyone. If you can't be unplugged and off the grid, this place isn't for you. Seriously, there is no wi-fi, your smartphones are only useful as cameras because there is no cell signal, and the generator that provides electricity only runs from 6:30am to 11pm. Bookings typically go from Saturday to Saturday so if the prospect of not being able to check your texts, voicemail, e-mail and social media for a week gives you the heebee jeebees, then this place is not for you. Second, this place is remote. The resort is most definitely in the WILDerness. In the four years that I've gone I've come across black bears and been within spitting distance of a rattle snake, rattle going off, coiling and ready to strike. The nearest medical facility is 2 hours away by car. And that's not counting the fact that you could be half a dozen miles into a hike away from the resort and your parked car when you get injured. If that seems a bit too off the beaten track for you, then this place is not for you. ...Still reading? Then you must be adequately intrigued as to why people go and keep coming back to this wonderful place. And if the you're not scared off then you will likely fall in love with this place as I have. Read on if you want my attempt to add information you might be hoping to gleam from reading these reviews. This is a family run camp. Decades ago a group of families bought the place and ran it together. Their children now run the resort and while you're there you'll likely see the next generation starting to help out as well. Staff all have a direct connection to the resort via family, being visitors in years past themselves when they were younger, or being recruited by one of the first two categories. What that means is that your initial visit feels like you're an interloper at a family reunion, but on repeated trips you begin to feel that you too are part of the family, because you truly are. That sentiment permeates through and is felt not just by my wife and me but by my kids as well. I would love it if my kids worked here when they're older and if I could spend extended time helping out after I retire, whenever that is. Days can be spent on hikes, strenuous or relaxing. Obviously the former will reward you with amazing views. Unlike, say Yosemite, you could do your whole hike and never come across another group. If you do, it certainly will only be a handful. There are lakes to swim in and vistas to take in. The resort is positioned so that you can make a day hike where others will often have to backpack in and out. Sometimes you'll be tempted to backpack yourself and maybe stay over a night or two but what always draws me back is the food - homemade and delicious. Dinners are amazing. Lastly, the kids love it because of the independence and being outdoors. The "kids dinner" before the "adult one" is as much a highlight for the parents as it is the kids. More importantly my tech savvy kids being raised in the heart of Silicon Valley have no qualms with Mountain Meadow being a "screen free" place. And that alone makes our annual trip worth it.
