"Sleepless night in Room # 1703" 1 of 5 stars Review of Cavallo Point Cavallo Point was a surprise "gift" for my wife as it was her birthday AND our anniversary. It was supposed to be a quiet R&R for the two of us. There was no rest and relaxing going on in Room #1703. My wife and I finally figured out that there was a locked cabinet, with no key, inside that room under the safety deposit box and perhaps the maid or maids had something locked up inside that cabinet, that they just had to get out. There is no reason a maid should be showing up, right after check in, (carrying a vacuum cleaner) and trying to get inside a room that has guests. We spoke to her in Spanish and she told us that she was trying to get inside the wrong room. She looked very startled that we had "caught" her close to 5pm, shortly after check in. She then entered the room next to us, stayed only a few minutes and we heard no vacuuming. There were two hotel owned electric cars parked in the parking area (in the front of this building) at this time, but we only saw the female trying to enter our room. The white cars were gone within minutes. Then, in the later evening, when we were both already in bed, someone again tried to enter our room, but this time very forcefully. The force of the attempted door opening was so strong, it opened the room dead bolt by 2 inches. We immediately became alarmed that there really was something in our room that needed to be retrieved by someone. Thus, began our sleepless night. In the early morning, we were awoken by knocking on our door at least 10 times. When we responded who was it, in Spanish, the response, in broken English, was a female voice telling us she would come back later. We opened the door and tried to get a look at her but she was already gone. Knowing that check out is much much later, who in the world would be disturbing guests, unless there was something in that room that they needed? We are curious to know what is normally kept in a locked cabinet in Rm #1703? The manager should have been very alarmed by this incident. Not only was he not alarmed, he never responded to an e mail concerning this matter of security. We left earlier than expected that morning, with very little sleep. We needed to get back home to rest. When we checked out of the room that morning, we told the desk clerk that we would like to pay in cash. She handed us a receipt indicating that the Master Card transaction had been voided, and handed us a receipt for the cash transaction. Today, in the mail, I was billed by Master card for the room transaction. I'm still waiting for this financial transaction to be resolved. As world travelers, we were very disappointed with our treatment by the Cavallo Point Security and Administration. Avoid room #1703 at all costs. read more

Very unique rooms in former Fort Baker officers' quarters. Room was spacious and very clean. Interior was modern while still retaining the "antique" flair. We were in a king sized bed room and had a view of the bay. Wine was served each evening on the the veranda of the reception room and coffee and rolls in the morning, complete with views of the tip top of the Golden Gate Bridge and bay. Free shuttle service to Sausalito and San Francisco and the staff were very accommodating, picking us up earlier than scheduled because we were ready to return to the compound. Free wi-fi a plus. Pricey but we felt worth it. Lucky to have gorgeous sunny days. Might be a bit dreary in fog and rain. The restaurant was a disappointment. Server was pretentious and food mediocre. The experience almost ruined our stay actually. Slapped down two wooden planks each on the table that contained the menu items with no explanations. One, it turns out, is a $100 per person tasting menu. It would have been nice to apprise us of the two different menus and prices as it left us a bit confused and we obviously annoyed the waiter by asking for an explanation. Food was warm and mediocre - like it had sat too long. My husband asked about one of the bottles of wine on the menu and the waiter's comment was "it tastes like water" - very condescending. I had to hold my tongue and not say "if it tastes like water and cost $60 why are you serving it in your restaurant!" Anyway we loved the B&B but would never go back to the restaurant. Definitely food and drink not worth the $200+ price tag when there are so many wonderful restaurants in the area. This would have been 5 star if the restaurant had not been so under par. read more

Ok, different rankings for different things. 5 stars for just the location - come here to admire the amazing view (from under the Golden Gate bridge), stroll around the old military buildings (and bunkers on the coast), hike the beautiful trail heads. 4 stars for adding a visit to the bar in Cavallo, good food, friendly service, but issues with training (e.g. a hostess who seats way too many people at once for the servers). 2 stars for adding a stay in the hotel. Bottom line on the hotel is that - for the premium price they are charging - you are far better off visiting the site, soaking in the view, hiking, perhaps noshing at the bar and then returning to your posh hotel that actually provides the super high quality service and surroundings for which you are paying. We are locals and have been going to Cavallo sporadically for several years, and they really can't quite pull it together. From rooms that are not ready at check in, to front desk people who can't solve issues that should be well within their purview, to the underwhelming mandatory breakfast buffet (it is eerily similar to the free buffet at Hyatts (though with better quality ingredients), but costs $35+), the hotel just can't provide the quality suggested by their charges. read more

FANTASTIC! great customer service. front desk check in and check out was swift and so friendly and knowledgeable. we stayed in the king contemporary suite. clean, modern. had double sided fireplace that faced both the sitting area and the bedroom, ceiling fans, huge tub, walk in shower, two vanities, phones, bar area, comfy couch, sitting day bed, and flat screen. the views were amazing and my husband is a green nerd so he was so excited that this LEED AP certified lodge had taken the time and efforts to address many of the details to address the resort's environmental impacts. we missed the murray circle restaurant dinner (at 930pm even though the pamphlets said they were open til 10) so we ate at the bar. also good food. tasty burger. my only wish is that we would have had longer time to enjoy more of the amenities (the free tours, hikes - which are only offered on the weekends, spa, fitness center) will definitely be back to relax at this lodge to take full advantage. read more

I have not stayed here, but was at CP last weekend for a buddy's wedding. We were blessed with stunning weather - and those of you from SF know how fickle the weather can be in August - which made the outdoor ceremony and cocktail hour very pleasant. The event space was nice, albeit a little sterile. The grounds are nice, and the view is great, but only from a few places on property can you see the whole panorama of SF and the GGB. I realize the property used to be a military base, but I still think the buildings are oddly laid out; as we pulled up I told my friend I felt like I was dropping her off at a mental institution. Another wedding guest described the rooms as looking like "my Dad's New York apartment from the 70's - with a flatscreen"....for what that's worth. Wedding food was ok, but don't think that reflects the restaurant's quality. Having cocktails around the fire pit, or on the veranda of the main building looked awesome. Overall, I'd say think twice about dropping $350/night here. The place is pretty, but I don't really understand what guests are supposed to do, as the place is a little isolated and 48 hours is a lot of time to be entertained by Sausalito, alone. If it were me, I'd keep driving north another 45 minutes and hit Sonoma. read more

This review is for the spa only. A group of 4 went there yesterday for an afternoon of relaxation with massages and facials. A treat for two German girls who are visiting us right now. It was really fun, and so so relaxing. I love that it is out in nature, with the Bay and bridge and Marin Headlands as a backdrop -- yet it's right there in my own backyard just a short trip from the city. We arrived early and had a ilght lunch of lentil soup and salad first at the heated pool outside. And then sat by the fire in the lounge waiting for our treatments. Everyone reported how great their massages/facials were -- all of the 8 different employees we got for 4 massages and 4 facials were very professional and knew their crafts really well. And although it was pricey when we checked out and I paid the bill, which I expected, they told me we were being given a $200 discount! Yahoo. The whole afternoon was really wonderful and none of us wanted to leave. read more

we just stayed here in a king contemporary suite and it was pretty unbelievable. everything was gorgeous, the room was well appointed and quiet (yay!), the bridge view was truly picture perfect, and everyone on staff was delightful and so helpful. i really loved how luxurious the room was (double sided fireplace, open shower, slate bathroom floor, huge bed, big windows, etc.) and i felt very taken care of the whole time we were there. the whole property is to-die-for-gorgeous so you really can't go wrong staying here, i can't wait to go back! read more

Beautiful! We spent two nights here and it was lovely. Yes the usual rates are very steep, but they do have promotions going on! We stayed here with our pooch-$75 per stay and he was well taken care of! we stayed at the newer lodging and loved our room. We did not have a view of the bridge, but just by walking out of our building a few steps we were able to take in glorious views of the Golden Gate. The crowd there is definitely a bit on the older side. A beautiful place to have a wedding! read more

They made our wedding cake for a Valentines Day Wedding. Price was steep for a cake that was 3-tiered chocolate with very plain exterior. Our florist provided the flowers for decoration. Misunderstanding with the flavor...requested red velvet but ended up with chocolate. All in all it was still really delicious. read more

So disappointed!. Took two lady friends as a post mother's day treat for lunch having read good reviews on Murray Circle. We were seated at 1 pm. Got water and menu at 1:30 pm. Then at 2 pm our order was taken . We ordered the small bites lunch, two ordered the scallops and one the burger. We then received the drink menu and ordered a cocktail. Got cocktails, fabulous, by the way mojito and bloody marys. Best part of the meal. By 3 pm got our meal. I was disgusted. For 24 dollars a piece, we got the most anemic looking plate ever. Cauliflower soup, white, lukewarm. Then seared scallop (one) mine smelled terribly fishy and was undercooked. Could not finish the one scallop. Also beige. About six ruffles potato chips with a lipton onion soup mix dip. Again beige. And a fistful of romaine lettuce topped with white feta and a couple blueberries, the only colour on the beige plate. The total for the meal was $ 138.00 plus tip for waiter and tip for valet. I was disgusted. Terrible meal. For half that we could have eaten in a great restaurant in Sausalito. On the bright side I would go back for cocktails and the beautiful surroundings. I am a Marin native and used to top notch food in Marin and SF. The wait staff was nice. But so slow .. We finally finished lunch about 3:30 pm and went for a walk near the GG Bridge. Stunning views. I simply cannot believe anyone could give the food or service 5 stars. I was embarrassed I subjected my guests to this. read more

My wife and I stayed there in April, 2017. Free wine in the when checking in was a good start. The views of the GGB and San Francisco are terrific. Restaurant was OK. less than a mile jog to the Golden Gate Bridge that you can stroll, bike or jog across, and the have nice trails on the many acres of property. read more

This venue is breathtaking. Probably some of the best views in the Bay Area. The staff is just ok though. There were many promises and little follow through. We left unhappy, but still gets 3 stars for how beautiful a location. If I could do it again, I would have just gone to visit and walk around. read more

Celebrated my birthday at Cavallo Point this past weekend! Heaven. Soon after arrival,I had a hour and a half facial with Gail. Best ever. The "facial" included a hand, foot and shoulder massage, I felt transported. The spa and its grounds are serene and relaxing, staff is great. Then checked into a King Suite in the "new" section of the resort, room 2004 - a winner! Sat in the window seat looking out at the Golden Gate Bridge pondering my good fortune. I love that the resort respected the history of Fort Baker and it looks much as it always has....checked out a few of the rooms in the historic buildings and then are well-appointed and spacious. Lots of options for stays with friends and family, or for a relaxing solo retreat. Great hikes up to the Golden Gate Bridge and headlands lookout...We had dinner in Sausalito but we had lunch at Murray Circle the on site restaurant, sitting on the veranda, noshing on halibut, spring pea soup and crab BLT's! The artwork -photography and wildflower prints, mostly by local artists are world class. Can't wait to go back! read more

This is our favorite romantic getaway. We always stay at the historical buildings, they have so much character with all modern amenities needed. The location is perfect. And the resturaunt is just amazing. Service is very professional and friendly. read more

I was here last weekend for a conference. It was just amazing. I had been too busy to really grock where we were heading and I was just completely floored by the beauty of this property! We arrived on a sunny day and the view is dazzling. They have both the original, old quarters all which have been restored and updated and then the modern lodging on the hill. I wish I would have had time to explore the spa. I sat on the wrap around porch in the most comfortable rocking chair just breathing in the air and enjoying watching my "neighbors" walk by with their dogs, etc. I had it on excellent authority that the meditation pool and spa was wonderful. The staff was accommodating and flexible and aimed to please. They had quite an array of complimentary fruit and snacks - that was a cut above the norm. The food was extraordinary in the bar and restaurant. It was so great to eat breakfast outside on a sunny morning while it was raining at home. The conference facilities were lovely. The rooms were perfect for our smallish group with a balcony and tons of natural light. It was a quick trip to the airport and a five minute drive to Sausalito. Lots of hiking and walking. They do warn you about the fog horns and supply ear plugs but the noise was absolutely no issue for us. We were on the first floor of the old quarters. Very comfortable and easy. I can't wait to return. read more

The property is amazing and service is spectacular. In particular, Zach really took care of us. Always love staying here!

I was underwhelmed by my stay at Cavallo Point. The food wasn't worth eating and the service was even worse. The only redeeming attribute was the concierge Rick who took us into town so we could get a decent meal. Don't waste your money. read more

We came hear for our anniversary and had the most relaxing weekend ever. In room massages, our room had a view of the Golden Gate Bridge (which we were upgraded to when we checked in), free continental breakfast on our first morning there, and an additional $50 towards whatever we wanted there. We also had dinner at the Murray Circle. We had the chef's tasting with wine pairing and our taste buds could not have been more excited. read more

Its a good place, beautiful, the rooms are amazing, super clean, and with a lot of space and feature. But the restaurant is really expensive !! I enjoyed the free morning yoga, and the meeting were well done. read more

I'm between a 3-4 stars on Cavallo Point. The family stayed there for a weekend and the grounds are gorgeous. I did my homework and brought bikes for my kids and myself (sorry wife was left out). We bikes rode down to the Bay (about 0.5 miles) up to the Bridge (maybe a mile) and then over the Golden Gate Bridge itself. It was a nice and relaxing weekend. The rooms however were more in the range of a 3 star facility. We stayed in one of the officer's houses. Completely beautiful form the outside and worth the trip just to take a photo of your family on the porch. Anywho the parking was cramped and not well lit (they do have courtesy carts though) and it was 40 steps up to our rooms (not a problem). Inside however we dealt with a lot of flies (in October?) in both the bathroom, master bedroom and living room. The wireless signal was also very weak with reception dropping off multiple times. The beds were soft but extremely comfortable. I thought my back was going to hurt in the morning but it was great waking up. Overall next time I'll go for lunch in the afternoon with the family, sit out on the deck but will pass on the overnight stay. read more

My friends and I took a day trip to Golden Gate Park and decided to stop by the hotel and have lunch. The host was really welcoming gave us options on where to sit. We sat outside and she assured us that there were heaters and blankets for us to use. Beautiful view. The waiter was great and the food was delicious. Will definitely return. read more

We came to Cavallo point for my friends birthday. The service was incredible! The food was delicious but what sold it was the super friendly hostesses in the front and our waiter Usef! He was very attentive and went above and beyond to make my friends birthday the best! Will absolutely be back! New favorite spot! read more

A few minutes from SF, yet felt like we were miles away! The grounds are rustic with great views of SF and the GG. My husband and I chose to stay in a contemporary room, which had a nice balcony overlooking the GG bride. We ordered in-room bartender service. Bartender came to room, shook each of us a martini and left us to enjoy. Great way to start off the evening! Can't wait to go back!!! read more

This is my first time coming here to host a meeting. The staff from the banquet manager, to the events manager, AV support, housekeeping and the dining room is amazing. I've never had such great service at any other hotel. The attention to detail surpasses any other location I've used. The team at Murray Circle is equally as magnificent. I got to enjoy my dinner and had not a worry in the world except for which desert I'd be having. read more

My husband and I had the wedding of our dreams at Cavallo Point. Our entire experience with the resort was ideal. We began working with Jessica W.--Cavallo Point's wedding/catering coordinator--nine months ago, and could tell we were in good hands from the beginning. Jessica was friendly, calming, experienced and effective, and went above and beyond to answer all of our questions along the way, give us options, and fulfill every detail we envisioned. In fact, every staff member we encountered during our stay was outstanding. Our guests absolutely loved staying at Cavallo Point and raved about the location, food, rooms and service. Though Cavallo Point is a beautiful place in any weather, we were blessed with warm sunshine and clear skies, ie. amazing views of the Golden Gate Bridge! We admit it was hard to leave Cavallo Point after the festivities were over, but we'll be back as often as we can! Thank you, Cavallo Point! read more

Such a special place! We've been here a couple times and have loved each experience! The food is fantastic, but even more impressive is the staff! They are so nice to the whole family (baby and dog included). John at the front desk was especially helpful this stay, providing us with an awesome room and even treats for our black lab! read more

We stayed in a suite in one of the historical rooms, and it was lovely. The suite is enormous, with a great living room that includes every possible amenity. There's even a window seat, where we had the most romantic room service dinner, looking out at a view all the way to San Francisco! Staff and service 100% perfect. This is a great location to experience hikes and beaches in Marin. We loved returning from a day of outdoor exercise to the comfort of 'home.' Highly recommend! read more

For the price of the place, you'd expect better everything. Our historic room was supposed to have a city view. It had a view of a field of dead grass and trees. You couldn't see the SF skyline at all. The size of the room was great, but that was about it. The blinds in the bathroom were broken & missing slats. The make-up mirror on the bathroom countertop (which housekeeping must pick-up every day to clean) was broken. There were a ton of dead bugs in the ceiling light fixtures and the coffee maker was stashed under the TV in a cabinet. To make coffee we had to pull it out along with the coffee and cups and set it up in the bathroom. Really? in a $600/night room? Oh well, we had to get dressed to go to the lobby for the morning paper anyway so we grabbed coffee there. Spa was booked, so never made it there. Farley Bar food was OK. Nothing special and the service was rather bad. Wish I could recommend the place, but for the price you might as well stay across the bay at the Four Seasons. read more

There is an ineffable charm here that is uncompromising and just as unforgettable. It Is rustic, elegant, natural, stunning, charming and grand all at the same time. You just cannot have a better experience in terms of service, accommodations, or scenery. Pricing seems very fair as well. Suites are huge. Staff is sublime. We even met Diane Keaton, dressed in her best Annie Hall and letting us know Cavallo is the only game in town. read more

Love it!! Good, ambience, drinks, food! it's ALL good!! Fabulous view of the bridge. The bar is a great option over the more formal restaurant for dining. read more

This is our third time staying here and this review is long overdue. Amazing service. Every time. The valet staff bent over backwards to make us welcome, doors opened, friendly and polite. Timothy at the front desk went above and beyond the call to fulfill a request and Holly in the mercantile was helpful and sincerely kind (not what you see everyday). What a lovely way to celebrate a special time and be pampered by amazing staff. read more

The owner of Papalote Mexican Grill went out of his way to make chicken soup for my wife who has demenia and could not make a menu decison! Cavallo Point is an amazing place to stay. I highly recommend it for visitors from out of town or Bay Area residents who are looking for something new. The food was awesome at the lodge, and the views are outstanding. read more

We were so looking forward to staying here, views of the Golden Gate and San Francisco. But the staff attitude, poor service, lack of attention to detail, and no-view room ruined our trip. The hotel was almost empty, but they put us in a room with a slight view of a service road.We have stayed at 5-star hotels over the world, but the lofty attitudes at this hotel topped any stiff Brit we ever encountered. There are lovelier views of the Bridge at less expensive and friendlier hotels, and staying in the city itself is better by far. read more

My wife and I got married here in October of 2008. For that reason alone it is at the top of our list of favorite places in the world. Aside from that though, the location cannot be beat. Its close enough to the City to easily partake in all that the City has to offer, but also far enough away so that you can actually relax and feel like you are part of the natural beauty that Northern California offers. The buildings are beautifully done and fit perfectly with the surroundings. Murray Circle has amazing food. There is definitely no other place that can compare to it in the City, or in Northern California for that matter. If we had it all to do over again, we would have chosen to get married here in a heartbeat. We loved it and our guests had an amazing experience here. You can't beat the backdrop of the Golden Gate bridge and the Marin Headlands. I take off a star for a few flaws that I think will be corrected over time. First, as is mentioned a lot, they still have some kinks to work out service wise. That is sort of expected with a new place though. And the people who work there are almost universally wonderful people who are trying very hard to make their guests experience at the resort perfect. Second, the cost of everything in the current economic environment is probably a little too steep, even for San Francisco. If you are going to charge people $700 for a suite, everything needs to be perfect. Its getting there, but has some distance to go. Third, they need a way for guests who are staying over night to access reasonably priced food. You are kind of isolated, and making people eat $17 hamburgers at Farley Bar is probably not always appreciated. And the service at Farley Bar, at least in the first six months, was unbearably and surpringly slow. All that said, if you are looking for an amazing place to get married in San Francisco, skip the overpriced generic Napa places, skip the overpriced generic City hotels, and have it at Cavallo Point. Its uniquely awesome. read more

Being a dog owner, it is never easy to find a retreat that will take mans best friend as a guest. The Cavallo Point Lodges dog friendly room was uber equipped to cater to all our needs, especially the dogs. On arrival, we received a big bag of doggie treats, a map that illustrated great dog friendly hiking and eco friendly bags for the unmentionables. The room came with a huge dog bed and food and water bowls. I'd rather spend the little extra than having to board my best friend any day. And on a separate note, the free morning muffins in the lobby are the best I've ever had. read more

We spent this last weekend at Cavallo Point for my husband's birthday and what a wonderful weekend it was. We arrived on Friday, after a hairy drive over, checked-in and went straight to the bar for some R&R. We were served immediately by the very friendly staff with drinks and snacks before heading to our room in the historic area. The smoked fried chicken slider is really good. Got to our room, knock on the door - Surprise - champagne in honor of my husband's birthday.....awesome. We had dinner at Murray Circle and since we were pretty exhausted from the work week we opted for the tasting menu with the wine pairing - it was great. Service was spot on and the food was delicious. It was a so nice to not have to make any decisions and have it all turn out so well. A late breakfast on the veranda started Saturday prior to heading over to the Marin Headlands for some hiking. We did the cooking school on Saturday night and that was a lot of fun. The food was great as was the company. We all learned new techniques, ate new things and enjoyed a fun working evening. Chef and staff are pros at organizing and managing "the help" to produce a delicious dinner in a timely fashion. If you have the time it is worth doing, I'm sure we will try again. Overall, we had a terrific time, even when the fog horns started in at 3 am. The location makes you feel like you are worlds away and we have recommended it to several friends and family. I forgot to mention that we have now stayed here 5 times. It is the little get-away that we try to have at least a couple of times a year. So worth every penny. Can't wait to go back. read more

It's a pleasure to review Cavallo Point Lodge. We were fortunate enough to stay there on a "fog-less" night and had a wonderful view of the bridge and the Super- Moon from our room. The accomodations were outstanding, the service was exceptional, and the staff was remarkably pleasant and accomodating. Special thanks to Josh and Gianna for making our visit memorable. If youre headed to the North Bay...this is the place to stay! Well done! read more

Absolutely fantastic. I usually shy away from restaurants that have Prix Fixe menus, however since I was treated to dinner here, I relented. I'm very glad I did. The setting alone is worth the price. Reminiscent of both New Orleans genteel and military austerity, I absolutely loved the historic restaurant, bar and porch. It was frigidly cold the night we dined here, but I still had the opportunity to sit on the porch with a friend while he smoked his cigarette. I will return to smoke a cigar and drink a brandy on that porch. The food was fantastic and unlike most prix fixe restaurants, the portions were very generous. I could barely finish the last two I was so full. read more
