I recently had one of the best vacations ever and only had to travel 15 miles to get there. This was truly a fantastic trip. My friend and I signed up to participate in the Adventure San Francisco Package that was offered at Cavallo Point. We hiked, biked, kayaked, and sailed and learned a ton about the GGNRA and the protected land that so many of us cherish. Our week was hosted by Doug McConnell - you know - the guy that does Bay Area Backroads and was just written up in Friday's Chronicle? And because this was the first package that had been organized for this newly opened resort/lodge/playground our group was small, giving us the opportunity to interact with each other as well as getting to know the staff at Cavallo Point, and of course, Doug. Most of our meals were included and the day trips were organized to a 'T' - and when something wasn't quite 100% the options were layed out and we were given very reasonable alternatives. For example, the day we biked we picked up the bikes in Fisherman's Wharf and the plan was to come across the Golden Gate, down to Sausalito and then take the ferry back across. Because we were unexpectedly delayed, and because of the much needed massage that was already booked, the organizers (Kristin and Mary Kay) suggested that we all have lunch back at the Lodge, someone would take our bikes back and the rest of the group would continue as planned. The trip was a mixture of great exercise - some days more than others - and enough free time to enjoy the spa and the restaurant. We met the sommelier (cuteness!), the developer, a local (napa) winemaker, Jim Morrison's best bud and creator of the cobra skin pants (that he still wears, BTW), our personal chef, and folks that are so passionate about what they do that I have been inspired. Our sailing trip was with a company called OCSC Sailing and our host, Anthony was fantastic. We learned that he sponsors/organizes other adventure trips around the world - like sailing in Greece where he will get a captain and a boat and all the food for as long as you want. We kayaked with Sea Trek kayaks out of Sausalito - again, another incredible business - they sponsor trips to Alaska, Baja, and Belize - all in a kayak to be next to a whale!
So that's the adventure part. The spa was fabulous - I recommend the Cavallo Point signature massage with Cynthia. The spa, the setting, and the treatments are all spectacular. The food! In a word, amazing. For the most part we had our own personal service and one evening had dinner in Murray Circle. Other times, they brought the food to us - we had picnics at Stinson Beach (break point from our hike) and on Angel Island (break point from sailing). Finally, the wine - great list, great recommendations. One evening we told the Sommelier we wanted something white, light, crisp and a little different. He didn't hesitate for one second and brought us an amazing bottle - of which we ended up having a second and hence, I have no idea what it was that we drank (sorry!).
I saw another review that was less than stellar about the room service and service in general being less than stellar. Please keep in mind, this place seriously JUST opened. I have no doubt that your next visit will be better than the last and the one after that better than the previous. In fact, I'm really worried that when I can go back they won't have room for me!
BTW - it was all reasonably priced and the rooms were really nice -similar to a super nice Westin. I also have to say I met some of the most amazing people in such a short time and will always cherish this trip. read more
