Cavallo Point is set in the old fort Baker area, south of Sausalito. It is an attempt at a hotel and restaurant experience that is supposed to be above average. It is above average in chaos, confusion, cost and gross mismanagement.
Actually I can't blame the staff too much, the management is a joke.
It's the food. Cavallo has a great kitchen, the food is sublime. However The servings are small and ridiculously expensive.
The bar is delightful, old time tin ceiling said to be original by some of the staff, said to be a replica by others - typical of the lack of coordination among them. There were three bartenders and four or five roaming waitresses and waiters, none of them had a clue about what the others were doing, had ordered, or knew where it was supposed to go.
We ordered a glass of wine and a martini from a roaming bartender. And crab cakes and mussels from one of the wandering waitress.
While we waited for our drinks I went to the reception desk to let them know that we were here awaiting for the Starks, we had a reservation at 8:00 - it was now 7:15. She said, I'll let you know when they arrive.
We waited about 15 minutes and asked a waitress if she could find our drinks (we were in plain sight of the bar and saw several martinis get made.) Then a bus boy with a plate of crab cakes appeared and we said, "Are those ours?" No he shook his head and then went to every other table and person at the bar trying to find the owner, only to be told by the waitress that in fact they were ours.
During that ridiculousness the manager asked if our drink order had been taken. We said yes and tried to tell him that was 20 minutes ago but he was off looking very important.
My wine showed up but not Kathleen's martini. The waitress was distraught and apologized for the bar while we watched them make margaritas for the couple who just got to the bar. After while the martini arrived, and so did our mussels, amazing coordination.
As we savored the mussels, Dr. Stark came in to the bar area and said, "We've been sitting at the table waiting for you for 20 minutes." He then spoke to the receptionists, there were two of them, and a sub manager, all who agreed it was our fault, but they would seat us anyway.
Stark had brought two bottles of wine for us. Ater some confusion we convinced the sommelier that we really did want them opened. She was actually very nice, just over whelmed that all these people were in the dining room - imagine.
The meal was fabulous, every bit of it, the homemade breads, the soup, the fish, the tartar, outstanding.
We drank the Starks's wine and ordered a more modest wine, the sommelier didn't approve of my choice, it was under $100, while most of the wines were from $100 to $1200.
We then moved to the porch and ordered a cheese plate to go with our cheap wine.
And finally the bill came. It was expensive. And, for no particular reason Stark looked at the bill, OMG! They charged $25 each for opening the wine we brought. The glass, GLASS of wine from the bar was $30, and to add insult to injury there was a $90 bottle of wine on our bill we didn't order.
Stark asked for the manager, and the supercilious manager came over, "Is there a problem?" Clearly if there was it was our fault. Stark explained the overcharge, and the manger replied, "That can't happen." I knew it was our fault. He summoned the waiter, who had been nothing but gracious and charming to us all night, and proceeded to humiliate him in front of us - how's that for a winning management style.
The bill was corrected, and It was time to go.
I asked the receptionist how to get my car to brought up. She said with a dismissive manner the valet is outside. "There's no one outside I said, that's why I'm asking you."
When we entered the compound we were told to go to the third building and the valet would take our car. Then a young man in a golf cart came by and said, "We're not doing any more valet parking, but you can park there." As I struggled to park another young man came by and said, "Would you like valet?" I'll skip the conversation, but the answer was a resounding yes.
So now, three hours later I was standing in the dark on the street wondering if he was a valet or if my car had gone missing. I went back in and as luck would have it I found the supercilious manager and the sub manger and explained my plight. The submanger took my claim check, and the supercilious manager said, "If your car shows up it will be out front," and turned and left. IF,... IF my car shows up?
So here's the score:
Food 8-9
Service 6-7
Ambiance 5
Noise 2 (it's loud)
Organization 0
Prices 1 (it's incredibly expensive)
I would not recommend it, and I will not go back. This was our second try. It wasn't crowded the first time and things went a little smoother. There are too many great places in the bay area to put up with that crap. read more
