I booked this hotel last minute as a surprise for my daughter's birthday. Since it was a same day booking I was not surprised we were put in the "nose bleed" section in the very back of the property. We are in a modern building. Not one of the sweet "officers quarters" in the Main loop. It is a lovely room and we can see a bit of water from our window. This all is ok and workable. Check in went well. Nice staff but this is when I asked for ice the first time. I then called to asked for ice 2 more times. Ice never arrived. The next morning I drew a bath and the stopper was broken. I had one of those baths where it was slowly draining the entire time. Since we are leaving today and they had so much trouble getting us ice I opted to not report it so that our last couple of hours weren't spent wondering if they were going to show up. If you can bring your own ice and bath stopper I'd say this was a 4 or 5 star place. But for $500 a night I had hoped for a little more attention for me and my birthday girl. read more

1st. the room was $549.00 plus fees. I think it ended up close to $700.00. 2nd at check in, the lady on the front desk did not understand English. I ask for my AAA discount and she just blew it off as she did not understand. At night I try to find my room and there are no lights. The terrain is not to be walked on. It was on a steep hill and the wind was blowing hard. The next day I went for breakfast. they used hard crumble dinner rolls for eggs Benedick. the portions were the size of the yoke. We had our room paid for until noon. As Paid my bill the clerk refused to now give me my AAA discount. we went back to the room and it was all tore up. We could not use it again as we had planned. I got use of the room from 11pm until 9 am the next day. read more

the lodge was actually nice I gave 2 stars bec. the restaurant has bad service and the chef is pompous and yet under seasoned and he does put garnishes just for the looks and not for eating. Hello? is this the 80's hotel food? We are supposed to eat garnishes nowadays. Word to the chef: have you heard of salt, pepper, cumin, paprika, laurel, etc. bec you do need to add some of those to your mediocre food. read more

My friend and I came in to try the Murray Circle dinning room and was very impressed. Isabell greeted us at the door and was very warm and welcoming. She took my bottle of champagne and put it on ice while my friend and I had cocktails in the Farley bar. My experience was like Rick R's...but worse and for 4 days. I'm not sure if Cavallo has received it's diamond rating yet. All in all, maybe Cavallo is a nice 'idea"; beautiful setting, lovely green remodeled rooms, and very nice modern rooms as well. But darn it Cavallo, you seemed to be understaffed, sorely unprepared, and with a total ass for a chef who swears up and down that the crunchy gritty risotto was just as he'd intended it. Took my boyfriend here last Saturday night for a quick, nearby to SF get-away to celebrate his birthday. I emailed the Concierge Joshua to request a room with a view and a nice table for dinner at the restaurant. He did both and then some! Upgraded our room to include an amazing view of the golden gate bridge and bay. Our contemporary Junior suite was immaculate, spacious, and well-decorated with a great balcony. Dinner at Murray Circle was excellent. Even the grounds were neat - set on a converted military base. I only wish we had time to check out the yoga class and spa. This place definitely ain't cheap, but I got what I paid for, and I will definitely go back. Be sure to contact Joshua. He was great! Even left a sweet happy birthday note for my boyfriend. Fiancé proposed on the doorstep of one of the lodges so Cavallo Point Lodge will always have a special place in both of our hearts. We took a picture in front of our lodge & the proposal spot so we can come back on an anniversary. Enough of the lovey dovey stuff...the lodge is very cozy & quiet. The Golden Gate Bridge view was still nice despite the fog. Staff is extremely friendly...almost reminded me of Texas & our Southern hospitality. The restaurant bar didn't have the right mixers to make an appletini so I asked for a pomegranate martini. They didn't have the stuff for that either but they insisted they could make it. The drink was way too tart but the bartender gets an A for effort. I can't recall what we ate but I vaguely remember it being flavorful. Wine list was quite extensive too. *3/4/13 Update* I contacted Cavallo Point in an attempt to buy a few Valentine's day gifts so my fiance would have a few momentos from our engagement location but the shop employee didn't respond after the initial contact. I ended up buying items from other SF businesses who were happy to do business with me and shipped the items just in time for Vday. I think I need to recant my Southern hospitality comment from my original post. This particular shop employee was not helpful nor was she trying to please a possible returning lodge guest. read more

we just spent two nights in a contemporary room - we took advantage of the local resident package (sunday-monday). Our room was lovely, and had a gorgeous view of the Golden Gate Bridge. We had a nice deep bathtub, and a fireplace in our room. There were some downsides, considering the price - We were promised a newspaper on our doorstep each morning - never happened. There were complimentary newspapers at the front desk. The hotel advertises that coffee and muffins and croissants are available each morning the building where the front desk is located. The first morning..there were four muffins on the plate that a couple behind me grabbed, and the second day, I went down earlier, and there was only a plate of crumbs. The coffee table is in an awkward spot, people reach over each other to get to the coffee/tea. Our bed was not very comfortable..the bedding was lovely, but the bed was lumpy and hard for me to get comfortable. The maids were talking very loudly outside of our room the first morning - I think one of them was talking on her cell phone - woke us up. The shampoo, conditioner, and body wash seemed almost empty (dispensers in the shower)..hard to pump out. The TV system is weird, and hard to navigate. Also, the room check out feature and survey were not working on our TV. We wondered, when we called about the local resident package..I was told that there was only one option for us - one room available...but the resort seemed empty...there appeared to be only one other room occupied in our cluster of rooms...the guy on the phone first quoted "the most reasonable room rate"..and then when I asked him for the next step up - he said there was nothing available. Also, when making dinner reservations, we had an 8 o'clock dinner reservation - we called to see if we could change it to 7 - it was just the two of us..they said they could do 6:30, so we hussled down there...and the restaurant was practically empty - with lots of tables empty through our entire meal... There seem to be a lot of small details that aren't right - considering the prices you are paying. read more

We had a wonderful time at Cavallo Point a few weeks ago! We stayed in one of the awesome new green contemporary suites with an incredible view on the Golden Gate Bridge, actually up on that hill a view of the whole hotel - awesome! The suite was beautiful, cool shower, huge tub, comfy couches, fireplace, deck and a great bed! We had dinner at the bar, great wine list, I had the halibut, he had the mini burger, both delicious! And the creme brulee was the best I've ever had, yum! Very friendly and helpful staff and servers. A quiet place right across the bridge from the city and a hop, skip and a jump from super cute towns like Sausalito and Tiburon. I'm not sure why the reviews have been so harsh, given it is a brand new hotel it is expected that they may have a green staff for the first few weeks - but always attentive and with smiles! Like Loren S and Bee K, I stayed here for the same corporate conference. Things began on a high note. I checked into the facility on Tuesday night. The stars were out, there was moonlight on the bay... The rooms are beautiful (we shared a suite in one of the renovated Officer's Quarters, with beautiful tin ceilings and thoughtful details like a pair of ceramic foo dogs in the china cupboard). Things went downhill from there. The staff was clearly green. Our servers were inefficient. We had to ask for bread (and were told that the kitchen was "out"), and we had to fairly BEG for vegetarian entrees. I work in an industry were vegetarians are common, and this is Marin County, so I didn't expect the kitchen to have such difficulty with that request. Breakfast service was consistently slow and ineffectual. Diners were given few choices, and the buffet was woefully small for such a large crowd. (Who decided that a single 6 ft buffett could provide enough food for 180 hungry breakfasters?) They ran out of food about 1/2 way through breakfast service, and we waited a long time for the kitchen to send out reinforcements. They also ran out of clean plates/forks/knives. A word on portions: we didn't clean our plates on Wednesday, so the kitchen veered to the other extreme on Thursday, and served us tiny food. Yes, tiny food. As in a piece of fish the size of a business card. The fish tasted mushy, possibly frozen, and had an unpleasant aftertaste. Did they just serve us week-old fish? I, too, found hairs in my food and on my water glass. I understand that morels are not the easiest item to prepare...but mine actually contained sand! For a hotel that aims to please the 5-star market, the service here has a long way to go. Will CP just slide into the same m.o. as the other national park lodges? (Expensive rooms, great views, lackluster food and service?) The staff did not enjoy taking requests, seemed uninterested in the guests, and were often rude and obnoxious to our faces. Yes, I know that I look young, and I wore jeans for my conference. (Sorry yacht clubbers...I didn't get the memo on navy blazers with brass buttons!) But I'm staying at CP, for pete's sake! As a paying guest, I deserve the same care and attention that you lavish on your more upscale-looking patrons. CP needs to learn more about the Bay Area and its culture. Like Bee K, I can do high brow or low brow. Trust me, this hotel's service is just plain no brow. Awful. The setting is the only "spectacular" thing about this resort. read more

This review is only for the restaurant (not the spa or the natural beauty of the location). I had the worst dining experience and my party of six was treated really rudely and poorly by our waitstaff. We still spent over $350 including a $50 tip, but the manager never called me back after I left a total of 5 or so messages on her voicemail, in addition to talking with the staff and having them relay my message. So disappointing. I'm a local and I'm really disappointed that my negative dining experience was handled in such a negligent way. I recommend the facilities and hotel/spa, but would avoid the restaurant and bar. read more

My wife and I returned to Cavallo Point for our anniversary. Our experience was mixed. Room - spectacular, with a great view. The TV remote control had to be replaced three times Room Service - food arrived in short order but wine+burger = $90! Bar - they still suffer on the service end. Long waits to be served and no one bothers to ask if you are a hotel guest and whether you would like to put the charge on your room. Would save the wait person a trip if they knew that it was going on your room charge. Bar food was good. Breakfast Buffet - this is an unmitigated disaster. When we arrived, they were out of plates, eggs, smoked salmon coffee and hot water for tea. We had to ask for everthing, including water, orange juice and our check. Concierge - this woman rocks. It was our anniversary and I had intended to order flowers the day before. We checked in at 5PM and the concierge produced a beautiful boquet from a local florist in one hour! Dinner - we had a dinner reservation at 8PM. When we arrived, the MD told us that it would be a few minutes before our table would be ready, so they suggested that we have a drink in the bar - no problem. Then, nearly an hour passed and we had to ask for an update on our table. Finally, the manager comes by to say that they "lost us" in the computer. Very lame excuse but he comped our drinks and seated us in short order. Once seated, we had a fabulous dinner consisting of the tasting menu with the wine pairings. Our server was Corey who made up for the slip-ups of his colleagues. The dinner, wines and service were all outstanding. Our conclusion is that they have a great property with potential, but have yet to work out the details that places like the Ritz and Four Seasons don't miss. I made an appointment in advance with their events coordinator to visit this venue for a potential wedding. She made me wait for 40 minutes without calling or texting once. I ended up leaving without meeting her because this was such a bad start. If this is how they treat potential bridal parties I can't imagine how they'd be to work with on an actual wedding. We stayed here overnight for our anniversary. The stay was really disappointing. We had the view of the golden gate bridge but $1400 for one night stay was ridiculous, the room was underwhelming. The way front desk treated us was bad, I kept thinking why did we so much money for subpar room and bad service! Fabulous in a word. My husband and I are locals, living in San Francisco, and have stayed here before when they first opened. More recently, my husband bought me a gift card here for Christmas so we booked a night's stay. The morning of we got a call from the manager (I believe his name was Josh or Ben, wish I could remember because our unforgettable stay was thanks to him!) saying that the hotel was overbooked and would we be willing to stay at an alternate hotel and receive a free night's stay in a King Suite for a future date. Hell ya was our answer. So, we stayed at another hotel in Sausalito compliments of Cavallo Point that night. That was a few months ago. We just got back from our amazing stay in the Historic King Suite, again complimentary. We must have been given one of the best accommodations on the property. It was spectacular. Located in an old Admiral's quarters, our suite was extremely well done -- the period character was so special and you can tell the resort invested in keeping the history of the property but indulging in every luxury. We had a bottle of wine, chocolates and fruit waiting for us with a nice note and also had complimentary snacks and minibar treats as well (I think that's standard). I had a treatment at the spa and it was perfect. We ordered room service for breakfast and ate it on our wraparound porch. This property is special - it's inviting for families, girls getaways, romantic getaways, retreats, really for any occasion. It is very expensive but is also full of value so you don't resent shelling out the cash you do (of course, for this stay it was on the house), which isn't always true at other high end resorts. For locals and tourists, highly recommend this resort...and if staying overnight isn't in your budget definitely stop by for a meal or cocktails on the porch. My husband and I have stayed at Cavallo Point three times now and I cannot say enough good things about this place. The lodge is beautiful, the decor in the rooms is perfect, and the grounds are stunning. The staff is incredibly nice and friendly. They offer complimentary yoga classes, sunset wine tasting, a beautiful spa with a heated pool. There are so many activities to do in the area it's hard to choose, just hanging in the room with a good book is pure joy. We absolutely love it here! Can't wait to go back. read more

My new husband and I just got married at Cavallo Point on July 14, 2012. It was hands down, the best decision we have ever made. We were originally supposed to get married at a different venue, but two months before our wedding day, we learned that that venue had been foreclosed and could no longer host our wedding. I had heard of Cavallo Point and decided to give them a call to see if they had our date available. I spoke with the catering/events manager Jessica, who told me the greatest news, that yes, they had our date available. Jessica immediately starting working with me to plan a wedding in two months. Jessica worked with us to create the wedding of our dreams. Cavallo Point is beautiful, the staff is wonderful, the lodge is classy, but I would have to say that the best part of our experience would be working with Jessica. She is the most kind, caring, and amazing person. I felt like she had our best interest at heart, and wanted to do everything in her power to give us a beautiful wedding day, and she did. She is very easy going, relaxed, calm, and just awesome at her job. Cavallo Point is lucky to have such a great employee in Jessica. She will forever be our savior, and we are so grateful to her and Cavallo Point. The wedding was beyond perfect. The lodge is the most relaxing place you could ever imagine. We can't wait to go back, sit on one of the decks that overlook the bay and Golden Gate Bridge with a tasty beverage in hand. read more

Like many of the other reviewers, I recently stayed at Cavallo Point for a corporate conference. I share the same complaints about the bad food, terrible service and general disorganization. It is a shame this place doesn't have the excellent service you'd expect from such a location. As a guest of a hotel/resort (no matter if I'm a member of a large business group) I expect to feel a little pampered. Oh, and by "pampered" I mean maybe getting a smile from the staff as they plop my plate in front of me, at the very least. Instead, I felt like a burden on the employees. The place is new, so I did take everything with a grain of salt (thinking they were still working out the kinks). But, after my week stay I'd say there is need for vast improvement. Views inside and out are great. Decor is reminiscent of a gentleman's club in the oh...30' or 40's? Pleasant relaxed and quiet. The front porch of the restaurant has very relaxing views. Parking is ridiculously easy. The staff was very attentive and pleasant! The Sweet Pea Ravioli and the side salad was just delicious. The after lunch dessert was a tad bit on the small side but (since I'm watching weight perfect!!). My lunch companions all finished their dishes and expressed their satisfaction as well. There is a separate bar and if you have a private group a long dining table upstairs that can be reserved. They even have on-site cooking classes where you can sit and eat while learning how to cook featured dishes by different chefs. (I think this would be really great for team building etc.) My only tiny irritant is that I'd prefer the wait staff to just fill the water glass and not keep asking, "would you like more water?" This Cavallo Point Lodge Restaurant and Spa (Separate buildings) are run by Passport Resorts (same people who run Post Ranch Inn). It's mildly expensive. read more

I had eaten at Cavallo Point many times and enjoyed the food and the spot enormously. I also have put visitors up there--they always loved it, but as I live in San Francisco, I had not stayed there myself. However, I was organizing a meeting and decided to try it out, Cavallo Point is not only an extraordinary resort in a beautiful place, it is ideal for meetings large and small, without any of the corporate meeting vibe that usually happens at even the nicest places. If you are arranging a meeting, try and work with Lauren Hraba, she is professional and expert in every way--she made planning easy and met my requests with a can-do attitude every time. The same is true of most of the rest of the staff from room assigners to the valet crew. I was hobbling around on a broken leg and called them for rides down from my room in the dark morning and they were forever schelpping stuff for me and loading and unloading my car. All this they did in a cheerful, friendly manner; very welcoming to a place at which they are clearly proud to work. The spa and spa team are great too. I had a massages with Gina, and with Lisa. Most excellent, the facialists, too. The food service people are very accommodating from the banquet staff to room service, and the food and wine in the bar, restaurant, and for private events is exceptional. The modern rooms are beautiful and spacious--many with great views and tubs to luxuriate in. The traditional rooms are nice too--a different style, and quieter. In some of the new rooms you can hear the sound of the generator down below. Our meeting was small, so we held it in a spacious suite--2404 for a more casual living room atmosphere. Our dinners were served in Mariposa Borracho--a gorgeous room with a long redwood table down the middle great for 20-25 people. A few little glitches did occur, but they were handled expeditiously and with good cheer. I will definitely stay there again. read more

My girlfriend and I had a great experience at Cavallo Point. Upon driving in, we first noticed how beautiful and convenient the location is. Next we were assisted by a staff that was both very quick and helpful to help us find our room and answer any questions we had. Our room had a view of the golden gate bridge as well as a deck, and fireplace. It was very luxurious, comfortable and spacious. After settling down, we decided to take a swim. The pool and healing facility was beautiful and relaxing. Everything about Cavallo Point was thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable. The rooms are a bit on the expensive side, but are certainly worth it for the experience. Can't wait to come back! read more

The rooms are nice, unique, quite expensive. It's not on the water like I expected, but the walk to the docks was nice and close, and the view is pleasant. We had a "historic" room, with high pressed tin ceilings, very spacious. I was disappointed by the tub, which was smaller than mine at home, and by the fireplace-- the super fake looking gas kind that makes you really just miss the days of the roaring fire. Also, our room was on the first floor, so everyone walking by could see directly in- which made us live with the curtains closed, unfortunately. It was incredibly quiet at night, except for the wonderfully morose sounding fog horns; I slept like a baby. We had the "Ultimate Date Night" package... I found (as other reviewers noted) it frustrating that there were virtually no spa appointments available- we had to wait until the day we left to get in, and then not until 11:30. If they're going to feature a package that includes spa treatments, they need more therapists on staff. That being said, my massage (by Nathan) was really remarkably good, worth waiting for. The restaurant is a whole different story... that will be a separate review, I'm afraid. Because three stars is fine for the place, but the meal was no where near that... read more

Perfect location - not too far from the city yet quiet and peaceful. Great place to take nice long walks or sit on one of their Adirondacks and relax with a good book. Walking distance from Bay Area Discovery Museum, which a true gem of a family place - the outdoor playground is worth the ticket. HIGHS: The interiors are really modern and homey at the same time. I felt like I was in a Pottery Barn catalogue. Beds and bedding are extremely comfortable. I like their emphasis of recycle and sustainability on all aspects of the hotel room. At the end of the day, came back to a room that was clean and fresh. Great attention from front desk and housekeeping. LOWS: If you have something on the 2nd or 3rd floor, be prepared for a workout as there are many flights of stairs. If you want a little bite of something, come prepared because there's nothing to walk to aside from their pub and restaurant, which are a wee bit pricey for a small bite. It's a great place to experience and relax. But for the ultimate relaxation, find something with more walkability, elevators and room service. read more

We were guests of Cavallo Point Lodge for 1 night, in conjunction with a staff celebration event dinner. Had never visited before, but absolutely loved it (with one caveat, below). We were familiar with Fort Baker, and when we were assigned a "modern room" up on the hill, we thought "oh well" (thinking the historic rooms were superior). To our surprise, our room (1504) was lovely, quiet (ex. caveat), spacious, and had a pleasing view (not The Bridge, or much bay view, but green, peaceful, sunny, no other guests, no obstructions or other buildings). We were so comfortable, we went back to the room before our party wound down to enjoy the room, and we checked out at the last minute 11:59 AM! We found the staff to be responsive, customer-oriented, and dedicated to excellent service. For a "work event", Cavallo Lodge is a nice alternative to the standard San Francisco city hotel scene, very peaceful, relaxing, fresh air, State Park relaxed ambiance. We enjoyed our short stay very much. Caveat: Upon arrival, we found earplugs in our room for folks who "do not find the sound of SF Bay foghorns to be soothing". At the time I thought that was a cute touch. But at midnight, when I was awake experiencing the "horn-blows" (every 15-18 seconds ... who was counting?), I did resort to the earplugs, and a pillow over my head as well. Hubby of course was one of those who found the horns "soothing" and slept like a snoring baby! I'm normally an easy sleeper, nothing wakes me up, but this unique sound was somehow disruptive to my brain, and I struggled a bit to fall back asleep after being awakened. For most people, I'd say this is part of the charm of the location. But if you are a light sleeper who may have issues, I felt compelled to divulge this potential watch-out. Other than foghorns ... I can't say enough about Cavallo Point! My fiancé and I got married here last weekend and it could not have been more perfect! A little background about us. We live in Houston, Texas, and when we decided to get married in San Francisco about three months ago, I spent days researching on a venue. We considered places such as Ritz Carlton at Half Moon Bay, a museum in Monterey, and different mansions in San Francisco. When I came across Cavallo Point Lodge in Sausalito, I knew our search was over. Cavallo Point embodies everything I had in mind for a San Francisco destination wedding. Situated at the foot of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, the property is part of the GGNRA (Golden Gate National Recreation Area) and formerly known as Fort Baker, an army post for over a century. The developers managed to keep the historic feel of the property and incorporated modern conveniences into the hotel rooms, the restaurant and bar, and every detail you see. I loved the "Nantucket" feel of the decor, and was thrilled to learn they are a Leeds certified "green" property. Jessica was a joy to work with! She was my main person of contact in planning the wedding. Not only was she willing to work with us in such a short time frame (I called her with less than three months before the wedding date), she bent over backwards to accommodate our needs. She was always organized, patient, and happy to answer my many questions, phone calls and emails. She even rode around the property with a grounds staff to search for the perfect site to plant our baby Monterey Cypress! We stayed in a Contemporary King Suite for two nights at Cavallo Point. Oh boy! I can't think of a better place to spend your wedding day getting ready for your groom. With a spectacular view of the Golden Gate Bridge from the suite, I was pampered by a massage therapist and the make up and hair artist. it was just perfect! Every staff member at Cavallo Point was courteous, responsive and just seemed happy to be there. We loved the food at Murray Circle and Farley Bar. The Wellness Center was beautifully appointed, and our guests loved the pampering they received on the day of the wedding. I can go on and on about Cavallo Point. A heartfelt thank you to everyone at CP for making our wedding day nothing short of PERFECT. Cavallo Point has one of the best views in Northern California. We stayed in one of the contemporary rooms with the Golden Gate Bridge view. Their service was excellent. Their spa was amazing. Their heated outdoor pool surrounded with the beautiful nature will melt all our troubles away, you will walk out of that pool feeling relaxed and stress free! We went to get drinks at the bar, on a beautiful full moon night, sitting on the porch...magical. Lots of good people watching too. Then we managed to get a table...YAY! Service was extremely attentive...but disorganized and sort of over the top. Too many people coming back to tell us we should all order three courses, wondering about the timing of bringing out things, etc. Food however was DELICIOUS and worth the wait. Especially the raviolis with english peas and pistachio sauce. The desserts (my favorite part) were amazing..particular fave was the butterscotch souffle...OMG! Love the historic building...would have enjoyed some live music in the restaurant, maybe a piano player.
