The Cavallo Point Lodge is located in beautiful Golden Gate National Park, just over the Golden Gate Bridge in Sausalito. The lodge is literally located at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge. The location may feel remote as you are tucked away on a small cove but you are just minutes from Sausalito and 30 minutes from downtown San Francisco. It's the perfect spot for a romantic getaway, a family vacation or a relaxing retreat. To the naked eye, Cavallo Point looks like the most amazing camp for adults, but its really an upscale hotel and spa. The hotel grounds are not only lush and breathtaking but historic. Cavallo Point is a former military base from the early part of the 19th century called Fort Baker. The officer's quarters have been restored and the picturesque white houses with their wrap around porches are used as the hotel rooms. Also available is a new contemporary building with modern hotel rooms. All the rooms are perfectly appointed, but I recommend the historic officer's quarters for a unique experience. Be sure to take advantage of the Michelin rated restaurant, Murray Circle, where you can also take cooking classes. If your idea of a vacation is to do "nothing" then this is the perfect spot for you as well. Popular non-activities include: gazing at the bridge from your rocking chair on one of the many porches, taking a nap in the sun on the lush grounds, or enjoying a glass of wine and a book in the toasty warm bar. The hotel is very animal friendly, which can be both positive and negative. Although the grounds aren't overwhelmed with animals, there are quite a few furry friends running around and lounging on the main porch. I recommend Cavallo Point as a wonderful getaway from the city. It feels like you are so much further away when really you are just minutes from home. You'll return home relaxed, well fed and happy. I also love taking out of town guests to brunch here as the food and view are amazing and it makes them jealous of the amazing city I live in and me proud. read more

We had a wonderful one night stay in a contemporary room overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, it was fantastic seeing the Gold Gate bridge illuminated at night. Our meals at Murray Circle Restaurant were excellent and the servers were friendly and professional but not pretentious. The spa is incredible, it is pricey but beautifully designed and relaxing.. This is an excellent location for a getaway for a special celebration. We saw several guests with dogs (thankfully did not hear them), but I know dog-friendly hotels are important to some people so thought I would mention it. What a treat. A stones throw away from SF...Alexander exit off the bridge. I finally made it to Cavallo Point yesterday afternoon. We sat in on the "porch" of the restaurant area on cushioned lounge chairs. They also have comfy rocking chairs. The grassy grounds are a cross between Maine and the South with a Norcal touch. The view of the GG Bridge and the SF in the distance is beautiful and the sunshine is spectacular. They serve a limited menu on the porch area. Inside is a formal dining area with a full menu. I had mussels which were great and my friend had the burger which came with fries. We also explored the spa area...which is an absolute treat with soaking pool, amazing treatments including thai massage and tea bar. I must say the only thing that interrupted what was otherwise a spectacular experience was a gentleman named "Bob." I was later to find out he was actually a manager. He disturbed my group two or three times and didn't bother to excuse himself at any point. When I told him that I was interested in having potential events there for my clients he didn't even offer his card. I have worked with the GM of Cavallo Point at another establishment and was surprised that this could occur at any place run by him. It is for this reason I down-grade Cavallo Point from five stars to four. Plentiful parking. I have to hand it to this hotel - they've achieved a truly audacious rip-off. Their 300+ dollar/night room was comparable to a $150 dollar/night Airbnb apartment in SF, just without a kitchen or reliable heating. And then there were the unexpected extra charges for things we didn't use such as valet parking and spa access fees. My advice, if you're looking for a luxury hotel experience, is to go up to Calistoga and find a hotel with a geothermal pool. They are actually less expensive and they provide something unique. Nice to know there is a place like Cavallo Point that is still close to us that enables us to take off for a long weekend to relax, enjoy some room service and play tourists and it's only an hour away from home. While everyone else is coming to the wine country we are happy to get away from it and wining up here is perfect. The rooms have been remodeled and some are new to what was an old Army installation. The large well equipment rooms have all the amenities one could ask for. Great bathroom shower and soaking tub, nice little patio with comfortable Adirondack chairs look to a stellar view of the CIty and the GG Bridge. Quiet and peaceful the beautifully decorated rooms offer us the relaxing getaway we look for. Our room had the fireplace which takes the chill off and adds a romantic ambiance to the room. We used room service for our breakfast and the service was quick, food arrived hot and the price was very reasonable. They do provide a small coffee machine which promptly ran out of coffee pods if you expected to have more than one cup of coffee. ( No more coffee for you!) Only thing they need to upgrade is the radio/IPOD , still has the old connection , the one that was used on the first version IPOD/IPHONES. Come on this is 2016, time to upgrade folks! The grounds are well maintained, we used the wellness spa and enjoyed the services there. We did dine on site but with all the restaurants in Sausalito, we would rather check them about since we know what to expect at Murry Circle :( read more

At ~$175 for a 60 min massage (with spa use), I expected way more. There were issues with my booking and when I was relaxing in the pool, someone came out and in broken English said there was an issue and Asked me to get out of the pool to go solve. I asked what the issue was and I was double booked - she could have just asked me what time I wanted. The "tea room" where you eat on your lap is the same room you wait for your massage in. The hot tub is covered in what looks like black mold and soap scum (see pics). The towel attendant didn't even know the word towel to replace my wet one, and the sinks were covered in goo and the attendant was more concerned with washing her own hands than cleaning the sink. Massage was okay, but she ended 10 min early and sneakily put a facecloth over the clock when she was done (I checked it!). I have been fortunate to stay here 4X in the last couple of years. This is my spot to for a quick staycation. The first time we stayed in a historic suite on the first floor. The suite was big enough for a small family with a huge soaking tub & shower for your preference. A comfortable inviting bed and priceless views of the Golden Gate Bridge. They have charming rocking chairs outside of the buildings, perfect for a nitecap . This past week we stayed in a very comfortable contemporary room on the second floor overlooking the Golden Gate bridge. I want to live here!! I love that the hotel is luxury meets eco-friendly, the staff is friendly and very professional. We have had a lovely experience every time we step on their premises. read more

We went here for our anniversary a couple weeks ago and the evening was going great. Our server was fantastic and the whole experience felt pretty safe. Also, the food and drink was perfection. The reason I'm giving such a bad rating is because of how reckless the restaurant was with the table that was seated next to us. Under normal times, the table next to us would have comfortably fit 6 people. Given current circumstances, it should have seated only 2 people if they were from different households. My husband and I were beyond horrified when a gaggle of women came in and they just kept packing them into this table. NINE women in total. All from different households sitting shoulder to shoulder. They wore masks and then took them off the moment they were seated. I couldn't believe my eyes. I then looked at the server horrified and said, "Are you f-ing serious right now?" And the poor guy just said, "You have no idea. This happens all the time here." I'll be sending a similar note to sipviolation@marincounty.org. Reckless irresponsible actions like this is why we're back in the Red Tier. read more

This beautiful venue ( and historic place) is surrounded by beautiful scenery and the national landmark. They also have the wonderful staffs. So the only thing that makes me knock one star down is the distant between places. In short, if you either stay here or hold an event here, you will find that it's not easy to go from one place to the other in this venue. Most of the time, you will rely on the golf car that venue will provide but the problem is ... in the rush hour, it took a while for the car to come and pick you up and take you from one place to the other. You can walk but if you are elderly or have problem walking in a distant, I suggest you to wait for the golf car. As the walk here is up and down the hills. And in case of having a big event here, they don't have big car to take all your guests from one place to the other ( from ceremony site to reception site) so please be aware the fact that your guests have to walk in the distant ( sometimes this can be in the cold or hot weather or far or not convenience for elderly. Come on folks - get real as we locals are foodies and serving eggs benedict sans hollandaise - because the chef forgot to put it on the eggs? Puhleeze! My husband found Cavallo Point when we were looking for a wedding location. We fell in love with the view and thought it couldn't get any better. When we stayed there we saw that it gets even better than a breathtaking view and an amazing wedding location. Everyone is friendly and professional and will help you out in any way they can. The food is amazing and the drinks never disappoint. But the highlight is torn between the unbelievable views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the phenomenal staff. I can't say enough about Cavallo Point. I have already made my husband promise to bring me there and get the fish and chips every year for our anniversary although it wasn't hard to twist his arm on that one. read more

At check-in we were told we were a day early. We were not and had the email to prove it with our confirmation. Instead of assuring us they would figure something out they made us sweat it out for 10 minutes and then finally had a manager point to the screen, she said okay 'I wasn't sure'. It all seemed for nothing but was highly stressful if we didn't have a place to stay. We did not eat or drink here, instead went into Sausalito and had a great dinner. Bedtime was the worst sleeping experience since having my newborn. The worst bed and pillows I've ever been on. It's been 2 days since our stay and my neck is extremely painful and kinked. The view is nice, but the hotel is noisy and you will wake up with the fog horn every morning. There is no AC or heater. The Murray restaurant is nice but waaaay overpriced, but food is delicious. We ate at Scoma's by the ocean, fresh sea food, delicious, for less money. My husband ordered a sandwich in the room and was gross and freezing cold, and wasn't written in the menu the steak sandwich was cold. We took the shuttle to Sausalito which was nice, but we are now waiting around for the shuttle to pick us up and the driver did not show up. We called twice and have been waiting for 50 minutes now. This hotel and its location are absolutely beautiful! ... It is such a shame that the service and the food are absolutely TERRIBLE! They must be extremely understaffed and seemed totally unprepared. We were a group of 180 people there for a corporate meeting that lasted 4 (and for some 5) days. This resort has a goal of attracting corporate business, and the only thing that went right was the buildings themselves and the beautiful view. During my entire stay I think I only encountered 3 staff members that were polite and helpful, the rest seemed confused, uninterested and often just plain rude. I feel as though I should cut them some slack since this was the resorts soft opening, but then again, when you invite someone to your resort to impress them, shouldn't you be at the least preparred and polite? Some rooms hadn't even had the water turned on yet, and in the middle of the morning we had maintenance people come to our room and as us to leave so that they could do some sort of maintenance at that time. People were snapped at, the mandatory valet was unorganized and someone in our groups parked car was hit. While we were in 4 hour long meeting sessions we had no snacks and were constantly out of coffee and hot water for tea. One room had no water for three hours despite the numerous requests for it. One bellman gave a director of our company a hard time about helping her with her bags upon checkout. Many others were snapped at, ignored and even lied to. All of their staff should be required to be trained in customer service, especially the front desk employees who took 3 phone calls and ignored me while I stood waiting to check out, before they began to help me. Moving along to the food.... It was extremely small portioned not well balanced, and dirty. I had a hair in my risotto (which was crunchy, I mean really crunchy and gritty), my boss had sand/dirt in her mushrooms as well as did most folks, and one lady at my table had a pine needle in hers. Despite all the mishaps with this risotto, (which was served on the last day, you would think by day four they would have gotten it together), made about ten people sick and have to spend their afternoon in the restroom. On the previous day someone had an ant crawling in her salad. When we requested more bread at our tables, one of the servers said with an obvious attitude "we are running out, so I will try and find you some". How does a restaurant that plans to serve 180 people, not to mention all the other guests who were staying and eating there, run out of an essential like bread? Breakfast was set up on one small 6ft table, buffet style...for 180 people! All days it was the same offering of some sort of stale or over cooked bread, a tablespoon of dry scrambled eggs and a piece of cheese on the bread. The only other thing served at breakfast was ONE bowl full of mixed berries (the only thing that could be considered good). This place is a 5 star resort, I understand that this was a soft opening and that not everything was finished (including the spa, pool, and gym), but I could not find anything positive about the staff or the food. No wonder, even after inviting us there to test out the amenities, they never provided us with a review card. A MAJOR DISSAPOINTMENT! read more

Really beautiful place to stay and wonderful friendly staff! However, the housekeeping staff was horrible for what you pay! Refrigerator in room didn't work when we checked in and didn't until four days later. However,even though they delivered cheese plate "gift" from our daughter and we didn't have a way to keep it cold, they made no attempt to "resend". It also sat in our room for 4 days, with the maid service leaving it there. Half the time we got no turn down service, had to request toilet paper by phone, etc. just be prepared. read more

Third time's the charm, right? Well, almost. We didn't have much time to plan for a romantic Valentine's weekend, nor did we have much time off to enjoy such a weekend. But we tend to celebrate "Hearts" day even more than other holidays. How could we not go somewhere special? We decided to give Cavallo Point Lodge another chance, especially because of its proximity and beauty (I really love the tranquil and beautiful environment). We booked the spa package online and stayed in one of the historic rooms this time. They did a great job renovating these old buildings. We felt like we were in a cozy, traditional SF apartment and temperature control was much easier than in the contemporary rooms. The room and lay-out (with a large bathroom and sitting area) were spacious yet inviting. However, the bed was much too soft for us and we both were unable to get much sleep. We had a relaxing time at the spa, which I'll review separately. The morning of check out, we walked to the Murray Circle restaurant hoping for a delicious meal on the porch. The porch was full, so we went inside. Even though the hostess knew we wanted to sit outside, she led us through the sunny front section of the nearly empty restaurant to the dark back area where we sat in a draft of cold air venting through the ceiling. Everyone else in the restaurant was sitting in the front section -- everyone else being perhaps three tables' worth of people. Before hubby could order his orange juice, I got up to leave. Walking past the hostess again, she absolutely refused to look up or make eye contact. Another lady who just happened to be there made the effort to ask if anything was wrong and we just said we were looking for breakfast which was no longer being served. This lady was kind enough to offer some suggestions in Sausalito. The first lady continued to ignore us. Ultimately, we enjoyed our stay but cannot get over how certain things just don't work for us. It's not even a love-hate relationship; it feels more like the gal in love with the guy who doesn't even see her or care...Cavallo Point should be getting four stars. After three tries, I'll give it three and a half. read more

I love this place and I highly recommend the bar. I have not eaten at the restaurant, however, from what I hear, it is top notch. the rooms are wonderful, the bathrooms are wonderful. And the scenery is amazing. Great for cyclists. Pan au chocolat and coffee for breakfast. In the bar, the cheese plate, burger and fries. I will be back, and hopefully next time I will be able to spend more time, and have more to say! read more

Spa services were good. A little pricy. Waiting area inside and out were very inviting and quite enjoyable and relaxing. AVOID restaurant - completely over priced. Tiny portions of food. JUST ok in taste, service not bad. Many promotions for this restaurant say the view is amazing. BUT if you've lived in San Francisco for as long as I have it is not better than sitting on Crissy Field and is not even that close to the water. View - ok if you're new to the city. Not worth a visit in my opinion which is what Yelp is all about :) read more

I had an outstanding stay at Cavallo Point! From the moment my girlfriend and I arrived, we were treated like royalty. The bellman warmly greeted us, and upon check-in, the gentleman behind the desk asked if we had any dinner reservations. I mentioned the restaurant name in nearby Sausalito, and he printed directions. Since it was already dark outside, he advised that we ask the bellman to escort us to our room via his golf cart. We went back outside and asked the bellman for an escort. He kindly drove ahead of us, and led us to the nearby parking area. He then loaded our bags on the golf cart and drove us to our room. Upon arrival, he took our bags and ran them upstairs to our room. The room was phenomenal. Most notably, a fireplace with a timer was a nice feature. We opened the blinds to find a breathtaking view of the Golden Gate Bridge. The rooms and buildings were very new, and the bathroom sink, tub, and toiletries were all a class-act. Later that evening, we asked for directions at the front desk, and everyone we encountered went out of his way to help us. In fact, on several occasions, employees approached us and asked if we needed help. The customer service was unparalleled. We ordered a bottle of champagne to the room, and the delivery guy was extremely nice and friendly. The following morning, the hotel sent a golf cart to drive us from our room to the spa. Once again, the cart driver made small talk and was very friendly and conversational. The spa was well-equipped with sandals, robes, and any kind of bathroom or spa amenity one would ever need. We used the meditation spa and the steam rooms. Cavallo Point was an all-star hotel. We were particularly impressed with the utter friendliness and extreme attention to customer service and the luxury in our room. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone who's looking for a luxurious (and romantic) getaway in Sausalito and Marin! read more

We attended this weekend for a wedding. Fabulous property! Wedding: The location was gorgeous. But the bride lucked out with PERFECT-warmer than usual weather. All of the guests all said what a great "destination" for a wedding. Makes it easy for the family and friends to get together and not have to drive to different locations. Hotel: I'd recommend requesting a room in the newer buildings. Our Room: 2510 was awesome..as it was upstairs and had a view of the bay through the trees. I really had to settle down before writing this review. We had our wedding at Cavallo Point in August 2017 and it was one of the best days of our life- we waited 20 years to get married so we aren't kids and are professional working people. Leading into this wedding, we signed a contract, felt we understood everything that was ahead of us financially and understood that for every payment being applied to our credit card we would be notified; which we were until the wedding was over. We were informed there may be a balance and to call after the wedding; I waited 2 weeks and called and was told there was nothing. I held onto my contract and all my wedding papers for 5 months past our wedding date and finally decided to discard everything. OUT OF THE BLUE, Cavallo suddenly slaps a $7,723.00 charge onto my credit card, no notice, no phone call, no letter, no nothing! So I call to find out what the heck is going on. I'm told Cavallo tried to contact me twice, once in October and once in November but I didn't respond to their email. I was in shock!!!! Looking back, I hadn't gotten anything from Cavallo Point so what was up? I asked that they send me the contact info they used so I can try and figure this out and while they are are at it, send me a copy of my wedding contract. Upon receiving these items, I see the face of my contract had someone else's name typed into where my name should be; that person's name was scratched out and my name written in, tacky! My email address was also written in as an after thought and was incorrect as well! My phone number was written in in the upper right hand corner of the page also messy and carelessly done. I had also been corresponding with the banquet manager Cheryl Flemming with a second email; but clearly no one communicated with each other about alternative possibilities. So because I didn't respond to them, they took it upon themselves to "close out" the "outstanding bill" just like that... 5 months later. The face of my contract was a mess, I had been through 3 different banquet managers and now I'm saddled with a bar bill that I have no recall to be able to discuss and no invoice. Then I'm told it takes 30 days to compile the closing bill, no one told me this when I called 2 weeks after the wedding, 30 days???!! They didn't try to contact me via phone or letter. They didn't communicate with each other as to a different possible way in to reach me. So we are now in shock given we've put out so much money already and had moved on in our lives after 5 months. I called to speak with Cheryl and expressed how disappointed I was in the handling of this whole thing and felt some financial accountability on the part of the incompetent people working there was in order. I was made to wait another 3 weeks so everyone involved could discuss the situation. I was initially told they were sorry and would make sure something like this doesn't happen in the future. WELL, that doesn't help me for I am now 5 months out and have no ability to dispute what they say the bar tab is. I also come to find out that a Martini is considered two drinks because of the amount of vodka used to make the drink- the pour was NOT explained to me either. I just had no recourse...there was so much about the end of this that wasn't explained to me in the beginning. They are now telling me that they are revamping their policy because of situations they encounter such as this...great, that doesn't help me and again, how incredibly unprofessional!!!! I asked that they take some accountability by removing the 23% service charge which was $1695.00, a small amount in the big picture, for the way this was managed. At first, they offered me one nights stay and a comped service; that does nothing for the shock that I've been blind sided with. We really felt they let us down at this point for all the way through this experience we held up our end by paying all of our agreed payments- we wanted some financial accountability to represent the unprofessional way this was handled. I am now dealing with Tracy Grove who states, "We decided to credit you $1000.00 for our only slip up was not getting ahold of you and all our service was produced the day of."As I continued to complain that I felt there were many more "slip ups", Tracy continued to apologize and kept saying I know you feel that way but unfortunately we feel we fulfilled our end - this just felt horribly corporate, cold and fake! Some may think, hey you got 1000.00 off - but to have this handled in the manner it was was unacceptable and their administration needs to dig deep as to the impact they've just left on us. Cavallo Point WAS a special place for my husband and I, that's why we got married there; however, they have successfully stained our experience there and as a hairdresser who sees many lovely clients who enjoy sharing experiences, I will tell everyone who inquires about Cavallo Point and this very negative experience. read more
