Here is my two cents on quantity quality in price. The food was delivered in a timely matter by GrubHub.. I ordered the Mongolian beef spicy along with two eggrolls . The eggrolls were you're pretty much standard of what you expect from other restaurantswith cabbage and what not.. They have about five different levels of heat. I requested the middle one of spicy. . it arrived in a standard to go container and was pretty good right off the back. He also gave me my additional four soy sauce along with additional hot sauce.... they were very good in following directions as to what I wanted and needed.. Is there a different cook at Cathy Express? The chicken chow main wasn't the same the pork fried rice was old, you can taste it kinda hard n stale. Cathay Express is delicious. I've been coming here for years and I've always received great customer service. Sometimes I would call my order in for pick up or if I am out an about I would just drive over and place my order. I love the their orange chicken and beef broccoli is always cooled to perfection and always so flavorful. The shrimp fried rice and chicken chow Mein are also my go to as well. The inside of the restaurant there isn't a lot a seating for dining in so if it's busy and it full expect to take you food to go or wait for the best available table. Glad they finally moved to doordash within the last three years or so, since I now leave much further. I've been offering from them since 2016 with the meat often lacking flavor and certain dishes being overly greasy. However, it serves as a decent option for a quick meal. The portion sizes are ample, but you may find it necessary to enhance the taste with additional seasoning. Personally, I tend to order the chow mein, salt and pepper fish--which is quite bland--or the salt and pepper wings, which offer a slight hint of spice but little else in terms of flavor. The last two times were a bit suspect because the food I ordered was saturated in grease: chow mein, fried spare ribs.... At other Chinese food spots...even Panda Express...the food is never (or rarely) greasy. The house fried rice and chicken drumsticks I ordered this evening were overcooked, grease saturated and lacked flavor. It's like that song by Sugarhill Gang...Rappers Delight..."and the chicken taste like wood." The chicken I purchased taste like straight up cardboard, and the house-fried rice pretty much taste the same. I could not eat my food. I threw it away unfortunately. ...and I hate wasting food. It wasn't the worse in the world. My boyfriend and I are new to the area and my favorite Chinese food spot is across town. I decided to give some in the area a try, starting with Cathay. I called in an order for 2 combo plates and an order of regoons. They had everything done within 10 minutes. The food was aight. I wouldn't feed the chow mein to my dog to be honest, next time I'll get all rice. The Mongolian bbq was so watery, unlike the picture posted. The star of the show were the ragoons! I had just moved to the area, but am familiar with the strip mall cause of another awesome place next door. I wanted Chinese food, so why not give it a try? Ordering online was a little confusing- I'm glad they give the option for small and large plates, but I didn't know I was getting small plates until I actually started clicking on items. I was wondering why the prices were so low! I ordered a combo plate with steamed rice, veg chow mein and eggplant with tofu. I can deal with the veg chow mein cause eggplant with tofu is one of my faves. Also ordered small beef chow fun and salt and pepper chicken. Good news, food was done quickly. Unfortunately, most of the food was really bland. Like, really bland. I'm not sure if it was because the small plates threw off the seasoning, but the chow mein was missing, the chow fun was meh, the eggplant tofu was not spicy, and salt n pepper chicken was dry. I seriously question the good reviews. *chicken Chow Mein & pork fried rice were too salty and had no meat or vegetables in them - none! Zero! Zip! I don't know how they get repeat business when this is how they serve staples!. The noodles were oily and doughy, and the rice was broken and a shockingly small portion. *S&S pork and orange chicken where sickly sweet, obviously from frozen. Totally edible, but you can get better quality from the frozen section at the supermarket. *honey shrimp was deep fried prawns, lots of dough. It's nothing like Honey Walnut shrimp anywhere else. It was the worst, I can't believe they serve this and charge money for it. Very doughy and oily. *Curry chicken had a decent, albeit salty, flavor, but it was mostly vegetables and only small bits of chicken. The prices are only slightly lower than other places, and the food quality is very low by comparison. This is going to be a long review. Stick with me. First, I used the Yelp Eat/24 app because I'm nosy and I like to try new things. I like that you can go into the menu and order straight from there. Once I placed my order and selected pick up because I live right around the corner, it sent me an email to tell me my order is confirmed. Then I wait. And wait. And wait. After about 20 minutes I push the message button and a friendly text says hello. I check on my order and the friendly text lets me know that they called the restaurant and my order is ready. So off I go I ordered a combo #6, and wonton soup. The green beans in the combo were excellent, nice and fresh and crisp. The meet was a bit bland. The fried rice was on the dry side, but the chicken chow mein was good. The wonton soup disappoints. Before I got home I checked and made sure there were wontons in it. If you're Sandra Bullock fan you know what I'm talking about . The soup had lots of wontons in it, some fresh pieces of broccoli, shrimp, chicken and pork. Yet still, the broth had absolutely no flavor. I ate the wontons and the broccoli, some of the shrimp (shrimp get rubbery when cooked too long). I ended up giving the meat and broth to my dog, who happily ate it for me. I won't be ordering it again. The fortune cookie did not disappoint, and hopefully these will be my lucky numbers. The portions are big, and if you're looking for not so bad Chinese food for a good price, this is your place. Everything just lacks in flavor, I feel they are too Americanized. I don't often post about parking, but I will today. We drove into a slot that said zero minute parking. Not sure what that means, but the minute I get back in my car that was running because I was not driving, there was a person behind us honking. There are other parking spaces. I have finished my meal and it's been a while, and my confirmation is still showing "your meal is confirmed". Don't wait for a message that tells you your meal is ready for pick up, it's never coming. At the restaurant they told me the meal was ready after five minutes. Synopsis: come here for filling, but not seasoned Chinese food that has fresh vegetables. Watch what happens if you park in the zero minute parking slots. It sucks that there aren't very many good chinese to go restaurants left in Sac, and I now remember why I only order hot n sour soup from here. On a Sunday around 730pm this was my only option, said why not give it another try 3rd times a charm right? Nope! Got the sesame chicken combo with an order of cream cheese crab wontons for my appetizer. Wontons are flat triangles which isn't bad, but they taste like they add a huge helping of sugar or corn syrup. So sweet! Cannot eat them, attempted adding soy sauce, but it didn't help. Very little chow main in my box, but thankful as noodles were very over cooked and mushy, and not flavorful at all. Sesame chicken looked decent but tasted like fried chicken coated in soy sauce with sesame seeds sprinkled on top. Two stars is for being open, and the order came out fast. read more

I am still loving this restaurant after many deliveries and some to go orders. My go to is Mongolian Beef spicy, curry chicken with broccoli, shrimp fried rice spicy and a few egg rolls. The food arrives hot and with all the condiments. Also the delivery staff is so sweet. They deliver themselves. $20 and up. I live near Watt and Whitney and they are on Cottage and Fulton in Arden Arcade. They never complain about delivering to our part of AA. I also need to mention their prices are sooo reasonable. And they offer small and large al la carte dishes, combo meals, and sushi rolls! Yes. Their website is very helpful and even though you can order online, I always just call. I love how they price their eggrolls at $1/piece. If it's just me I get 2 if more people I can order what I want. I appreciate their loyal patronage during this whole COVID time too. I'd been wanting to order food from Cathay Express for a while and ordered food for delivery recently. I'm glad I finally did! They do orders through Grubhub and you can also order through their website, however I called to place my order by phone. The gentleman who took the order was friendly and helpful. They offer free delivery service, which is a big plus! Super easy, contactless delivery-- Our food arrived in about 45 minutes and the man who delivered the food placed the food on the stool I set outside my door. The food was packed really well and with care. We had egg rolls, crab cheese wontons, vegetable egg foo young, small orders of chicken fried rice and vegetable chicken... all very tasty! Portion sizes are good and we had left overs for the next day. Prices are reasonable. Will for sure be ordering from Cathay Express again when craving Chinese food! read more

TL;DR: Cathay Express is the absolute best, and you should do yourself a favor and order now. Where do I even start? I frickin' love this place. Cathay Express is a godsend. We discovered them about three years ago when my husband and I moved to Sacramento. It took one takeout order to get us hooked. Now, we order food from them (no joke) AT LEAST once a week because they're so good, so affordable, and so quick and friendly for delivery. They shut down for a short period of time when COVID first hit, and we were literally counting down the days until they reopened. Speaking of COVID, we mostly use their super fast in-house delivery service (yay for no Doordash!), but the few times we have gone in to pick up food, everything is squeaky clean inside. Everyone wears masks. They even built a plexiglass register guard themselves. They're taking the whole thing seriously, which is much appreciated. The folks who work there are always friendly and kind too. Our place is really hard to see from the street, and delivery folks tend to get frustrated finding us. Cathay delivery folks have always been super nice about it, and now they know our place well! This is all well and good, but let's be real. When it comes to establishing a killer Chinese food restaurant, it's all about the food. And holy crap is Cathay's food amazing. I've tried a huge chunk of their menu at this point (including the sushi and Japanese food), and it is all spot on. My current favorite is the bbq pork fried rice (that comes with almost every combo plate) and the honey shrimp. But there's seriously so much good stuff that it's hard to pick sometimes. Even when I went vegetarian for a few months, Cathay still hooked me up with tastiness with their eggplant tofu. I still get it sometimes it's so good. I'm beginning to think to myself that there must be something in the water with the quality of food on the block of Cottage Way and Fulton Ave. (in the Arden-Arcade neighborhood of Sacramento). Because the two other food establishments that I visited (that are in this same little strip mall), "Ocean Fish & Chips" and "Dugout Delicatessen" were also very excellent choices. And now this takes me to "Cathay Express" which offers a large variety of Chinese food as well as a few Japanese dishes. I came here on a Saturday afternoon (around 12:00pm) with my mother and brother as we all decided to stop here for lunch. Upon entering, there was not a single customer in the restaurant. But considering the respectable amount of above average Yelp reviews, I was not a wee bit worried. The inside is your typical cookie cutter styled restaurant; not too big and not too small. I did like some of the decor as there were unique Oriental pictures throughout. And as a very nice touch, the tables had some amazing artwork embedded into them. Since the restaurant itself doesn't have a "wow" factor from an aesthetic perspective, this definitely made up for it. As I was more in the mood for sushi, I decided on trying their "S4" (Sushi Express Combination Plate) which consisted of their "Spider Roll" and "Cathay Roll" (for $11.95). My brother goes the Chinese route and orders their Combo #3 which is their "Mongolian Beef w/BBQ Pork Fried Rice & Chicken Chow Mein" (for $6.95). My mother keeps her meal simple by ordering a large bowl of their "Wor Wonton Soup" (for $6.50). All three of our meals come out in different sequences but all within a 5-minute time frame. As far as my sushi combination plate, the picture I took does not do any justice. Because of all the sushi rolls I've eaten in my time, these rolls are absolutely HUGE! And considering you're getting not one but two rolls for less than $12, this is one hell of a bargain. But I didn't want to get my hopes up too much until eating the first bite. First with the spider roll; there were very generous amounts of crab where you actually get a ton of meat inside. And now onto the Cathay roll; the deep-fried shrimp also had a ton of actual shrimp where the rice and sauces is not overpowering. In my opinion, both of these rolls were on point as I got extremely filled up for the rest of the afternoon. My brother also raved about his entree as he mentioned the Mongolian beef was cooked and seasoned to perfection. He also gave two thumbs up on the fried rice as there was a good amount of pork in it. And finally, my mother loved the Wor Wonton soup as there was a generous amount of pork as well as shrimp while the broth tasted extremely delicious. So basically, we were all sold on these three entirely different entrees all packed into one review. Overall, "Cathay Express" is a legit little place that you would never think of it being here unless you actually pull into the parking lot. The service was above average while the prices on all their food was very reasonable, especially with the amount of food you get. I ordered through Yelp and had a great experience. It was a Sunday night about 6:40 pm, they close at 8. The order was very easy and I love that I was able to see pictures of what I was going to order (the eyes are the doors to my stomach). It said the wait time would be 45~55 minutes. I was pleasantly surprised to hear a polite knock on my door 25 minutes later . And it was nice and hot!! I ordered a large pork fried rice, small sesame chicken, salt and pepper chicken wings and hot & sour soup . All were very good especially the chicken wings. Delicious, great prices, and there's good portions in terms of quantity. I've never eaten in the restaurant but I've ordered delivery ($25 minimum required) and takeout multiple times through Grub hub through Yelp and the food and service has always been superb, totally better than Doordash. The driver is usually early and for pickup as well. I don't feel scammed or bad at all when I pre-tip because their service is always great and I know their food will taste good. They weren't kidding with the "express" part I normally don't order the popular dishes but for the items that I do purchase, they are scrumptious nevertheless. The shrimp or house egg fu young is my favorite, the egg just the right amount of flavor. Sometimes I also purchase the soups; I've tried them all and I enjoy all of them. My husband and I tried their sushi for the first time this week. I was skeptical about trying sushi from a Chinese restaurant but my husband and I can confidently say that it actually tasted pretty good! We were genuinely surprised, especially him (he's picky with his sushi), because we're sushi lovers and some places are quite disappointing. Not Cathay's! Their rolls are cheap and although the options are limited, they make sure to stuff their rolls with the good stuff: crab, avocado, fish, deep fried shrimp, etc. instead of a big chunk of cucumber and tons of rice and call it a day (like some restaurants). They also leave the sauces on the side in separate containers for takeout/delivery in case you only want a certain amount or no sauce on your roll. Arguably, their rolls are better than some of Mikuni's rolls, in my opinion. And the best part of all is that they are always accurate with my orders. I've had restaurants mess up with my order regardless whether I'm dining in or takeout so I appreciate a restaurant that does their best to please their customers on the first try. I rarely interact with the employees except when I'm picking up my food but they are nice and whoever the cook is, they obviously know how to make a hungry stomach happy so I have absolutely no complaints.
