I just went to Cathay Center. I had bought a Groupon. I ordered take out and asked over the phone if I could use the Groupon. The lady said no problem. Went to use the Groupon and owner- or possible manager was shouting at me. Saying it was just dine in. Was extremely argumentative when Groupon didn't mention anything about dine in. Went to meet some friends after a funeral for a bite to eat just some snack. Things was greeted at the door that was not a lot of parking, but did find the space get into the restaurant was very open bright happy people they were all smiling with those kind of bringing us to the table and stuff, etc.. however we got the seated. We got the food. We were kind of disappointed. The portions were huge. That wasn't even a question about the portions were very big. However, the food was not super hot. I would expect to come out the kitchen and be hot at first my son got the wrong ribs. I went back and got the right ones for him, but the egg foo yong was very overcooked that we had and the rice even though it was full of chunks of pork and stuff it wasn't very hot like you would expect it to be. This fed 4 people for about 2 days and then some... totally good price for the amount of food! - chicken lo mein (3.5/5) - shrimp fried rice (4/5) - string beans (5/5) - salt and pepper calamari (5/5) - beef and broccoli (5/5) - Kung Pao Three Deligh served w/ white rice (3.5/5) (not bad just sweeter than we thought) When we went to go pick it up, it was such a fun high energy ambiance. Hit it right after Cathay Pacific in Quincy. I'm told that the owners of the two restaurants are siblings but they're different restaurants. The food is different. Much more casual atmosphere here, with a sports bar feel. None of the mid century Chinese American architectural touches. But definitely old school menu. Fried Wontons: Crisp, simple, and a bargain. Low price, high volume. The generosity would be a trend. Combo Plate: You can get a combo any time; they have fixed combinations and a pick-your-own combo that allows flexibility and variety. We went with a 3-item (plus pork fried rice) combo with Chicken Fingers, Shrimp & Lobster Sauce, and Spareribs on the bone. Spareribs: You get 3 or 4 of various sizes on the combo; I took one large one and found it meaty, somewhat juicy, and tasty with a nice glaze and char. Chicken Fingers: A decent amount of them on the combo. Puffy and crispy, with nearly as much batter as chicken. Not bad, not good. Shrimp and Lobster Sauce: rather than crowding the combo plate, they serve this on a separate stainless steel plate from the old days, minus the lid. Large crumbles of soft, stewy pork. Gentle texture, aromatic flavor. Dark but less "black" tasting and less salty than most. I like the black tasting, but I liked this one a lot. The shrimp were 4 large pieces with tails still on. Solid item. Pork Fried Rice: The rice on the combo was pretty good; no better. Dark but a little dry and a little bland. Not a problem, just not noteworthy. Subgum Pork Fried Rice: What a difference a few vegetables make. The a la carte rice was MUCH better, much fresher, and full of life. Very good. Chicken Wings With Black Bean Sauce: Back in the 1970s, you'd see this on every Chinese menu, but it's getting harder to find nowadays. This was an excellent rendition, with a very complex and flavorful sauce on the wings. There must've been well over a dozen of them on the plate, which was nice. Food has always been great. The problem for the last few years is the poor attitude that bartender Paul has. Figured I'd give it another try after not visiting for a couple years. Nothing changed with poor attitude Paul. I always thought the bartender worked for tips and usually people come to see the bartender. No way anyone is going in there for him. Once again, I see YELPers lambasting and hating on this joint, but I found it quite pissah. Not all is perfect by any means, but it pegs the ghetto meter for a fun and yumski old-school experience that includes the not-so-great stuff that is an essential part of the legit old-school experience of Chinese American. There has to be a certain amount of inherent jankyness that makes it legit and CC has it. Let's do some deets: It has a bar side with lots of regulars, so it appears, and drinking is heavy here. Lots of varicose red faces and boozed-out-looking folk playing hours-long Keno and scratch tix sessions with drinks by their side monitoring the many TV screens displaying their hopeful winnings... The dining side is simple with bric-a-brac decor peppered about. Gambling is rampant here and scratch tickets are everywhere. The waitress was no frills but wicked competent. It took a wicked long time (at least an hour) for food to come out, but this is the kitchen's doing and not her fault. The food all appeared more-or-less freshly made with the Pork Fried Rice being the exception as it was however old and seemed somewhat fossilized. Prices are cheap. I do reckon my dish was the star of the show at 17 bucks. It was the Cathay Chef Special which was beef, chicken, shrimp(s) and lobster (one VERY teenie-sized piece, literally a bit bigger than a grain of rice) but I was OK with this since everything else was plentiful AF and the assorted veggies were absolutely wonderful. The meat appeared to be real meat from what I could tell, and all was smothered in a Brown Boom-Boom Sauce. It was so yumski that I ate every last jot of this wicked-mental platter, and it came with "free" white rice to boot. The pots of tea were free too as was the bottled spring water. The other peeps had Combo Plates of various kinds with piles of the somewhat fossilized Pork Fried Rice, and Fried Wontons and 'Goons were going off everywhere. Uncle Wally had the Yo-Yo Kow Pang with a House Goo-Goo Sauce. He liked it... it's food... The place seems very community-involved as there were photos everywhere of charity-type stuff and local sports leagues depicted with sponsorships and stuff from Cathay. Good Juju here and good Karma. I was truly on a nutritional high after this meal and I do recommend Cathay Center for hangry YELPers. I do reckon that the Cathay Chef Special is the most bueno of all dishes but I'm sure others are good as well. Always fast and friendly service! The portions are MASSIVE and flavor is never an issue! Their salt and pepper shrimp is phenomenal.

Food is subpar, probably worst Chinese in Weymouth and most expensive.. They often rip you off, so double check your check and don't buy anyone a drink because they constantly double charge. Aka you pay and the person pays. Also when you pay your tab, you have to make sure that it gets paid, otherwise they take your tab as a tip and chase you out saying you didn't pay. Shadiest place in Weymouth... BUT, they are open late and if you want chinese after 10pm until around 2am.. All the prices on the menu's are $2-3 dollars cheaper. When you get their it's always a surprise markup + some crazy taxes added. Honest places have taxes included and update their menu's to reflect actual prices. Mai Tia's are good, but forget about getting the orange, cherry and umbrella. The dine in wing special is the only honest prices item on the menu. Karaoke is thur/fri/sat and always entertaining. Ambiance is gross as they often leave dirty tables for hours, take a walk around back and you will see tables that haven't been cleaned all day. They rake in the cash. I usually go to Ocean Kai as it's better priced, quality, and much cleaner. Very dishonest and if you had a few they will target you and add all kinds of crap to your bill... They must get a commission or bonus because they rip people off like clockwork. They should call the place The Con Center. Portions are very good and Karaoke make the place. After years of dining this location the FOOD and service has never been consistently good and hit or MISS VERY SPOTTY! But I keep given this location the benefit of the doubt and the reason it's still open and management seems to believe that their regular customers come because there are no other GATHERINGS spots to eat . The older male (MASKED) waiter seemed friendly, I asked if the Sizzling Platter a good recommendation and he did....well I had a guest and when it arrived IT WAS NOT SIZZLING NOR WAS IT APPEALING! The sauce was totally congealed and thick and clumpy! The the green peppers were wilted and warm. The chicken dry and tuff, Plus had a bad odor and the rice on the side was so clumpy and stiff and warm which told me that it was just sitting and not stirred or prepared fresh. My guest had a similar experience and the old waiter never came back to ask or even replace our empty water glasses till we were done. The place was not busy al all in the dining area. I did notice he was maybe on his phone across the room by the kitchen entrance. Then with out asking cause our food was not consumed totally he brought paper containers to fill our own plates which usually our past waitress from previous dinners would come take our plates snd return it nicely packed in a bag and also asked if we wanted duck sauce, then the waiter just returned with the bill and NO FORTUNE COOKIES AND PINEAPPLE TO FINISH OUR DINNER! Which has always without fail was brought to the table! That Was the turning point. The waiter never came back to see if we needed change...this action must be intentional so the customer gets frustrated and just leave and over TIP! Which we did.... That waiter should be ashamed of himself serving regular customers sub standard service and having food come out of the kitchen NOTHING LIKE THE PICTURES OR DESCRIPTION from Menu. The staff seems friendly but it's not sincere, we need to support RESTAURANTS THAT ARE GLAD FOR YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY! New Staff or New Management might benefit by a big CHANGE! This is the worst review I have ever done in all the years of dining! But places like this depends of area regulars that don't really care of the food or service since it's a gathering spot. HORRIBLE experience. my family and i went to have a nice little late lunch and we have an allergy due to sesame. Then prior to ordering the food, we told our waitress about the allergy. My brother is the one with the allergy, we were told everything was fine and he was fine to eat what was ordered. WRONG. She came back out as he had the food up to his mouth about to eat it. So disappointed the last few times we've been there especially for New Year's Eve. I hadn't been here in quite some time but I was out for lunch with friends this past week and we decided to have our lunch here. The food is still pretty good here although I did notice that they are not featuring the buffet that they used to have here ( I would assume because of this COVID thing that is still going on). They do have a good sized menu though, with many excellent entrees and appetizers on it so there was plenty to pick from. We each got a luncheon special where we got pork fried rice and each got to pick 2 out of 26 different items to go with the rice for $13.25 and if you want, for another couple of dollars you can pick a third item. I went with the chicken fingers and crab rangoon. The portion size that I received was great and very filling. The dining room was very busy for lunchtime but the two waitresses who were working kept up with the customers very well and kept the tables cleared and the dining room neat and clean. If you're looking to host a larger gathering or a party they do have a function room that can accommodate up to 50 guests. There is a special menu that they have here for functions and you can have the food served either buffet style or family style. There is also a catering to-go menu if you prefer to hold your gathering at home instead of in the restaurant. Cathay Center has Consistently good food. For dine-in, bread and hot tea are complimentary. This is disappearing from most other Asian restaurants. Their prices are very reasonable. The pu pu platter is great with the kids and they have a large family version that also includes a large pork fried rice and large chicken lo mein for $45. Their salt & pepper shrimp, scallops and calamari is excellent. I've ordered it from a number of Asian restaurants and Cathay Center is clearly the best. For take out they give plenty of duck sauce. It's nice to not have to beg for more when you pick up your order. Bread and fortune cookies are also included. Overall just a solid restaurant that provides good food for a reasonable price. Used to love Cathay Center pre-pandemic. Was a divey but fun sport. My wife and I popped in there for a drink and some lunch today for the first time in over a year and we're greeted by a table of patrons baa-ing at us. We decided to ignore them and eat our food. Then we were leaving, we put our masks back on, and they baa-ed us again and kept yelling that we are sheep. Will never step foot in this establishment again. My bill was $31 and I left a tip to make it an even $40 but somehow they charged me $120. It's not the first time this happens. They clearly state you can substitute combos for a dollar which I do every time, but now am being told they don't do that nor have they. It was a very simple substitute as the substitute was cheaper than all the other items offered. Instead of pay $11 for my meal I would have to pay almost $25 to get each of them separately. How do customers accept the quality of this Asian (fusion) food?! My family and I are Asian, and we've had extensive experience in going to both amazing and awful Asian restaurants. After trying the Cathay Center, I feel like I have a duty to warn everyone about this place! As soon as we entered, we saw that there were no other Asian customers... usually a bad sign. We used a certificate from Restaurant.com for 3. After looking through the menu for a few minutes we decided on an appetizer along with 3 entrees. Our young inexperienced waiter took our orders and rushed off to attend to the other customers. Even though the restaurant wasn't full they still seemed understaffed. Time passed while we snacked on the bread with sauce and we spotted our waiter carrying the first order, which surprisingly was NOT our appetizer but the Sizzling Mongolian Beef entree. Ok, honest mistake. We were pretty hungry so we we all shared a portion of it waiting on everything else. After ~10 minutes our waiter returned with the rest of our entrees. He brought the Shrimp Noodles for my mom, and a strange looking dish that looked nothing like Beef Teriyaki and Chicken Curry. Instead in front of me was some meaty Mushroom Soup with Chicken Fingers on the side. I hate sending back food, but the order was COMPLETELY WRONG. The waiter was extremely apologetic, and he probably wrote down the wrong number. LAST and definitely least came our unappetizing appetizer of Shumai in what looked like an ash tray (common dim sum dish usually served in bamboo/metal steamer). Try as they might to imitate our favorites -- just too many aspects of this restaurant offended our calibrated Asian cuisine tastebuds for us to go back! ___________________________________ BREAKDOWN OF FOOD 1. Sizzling Mongolian Beef (with white rice) - a bit salty and saucy but overall edible. The rice was hard and lukewarm. It tasted just like rice we make at home after refrigerating the leftovers and reheating it. 2. Shrimp Noodles - tasted like doughy string with small peanuts sprinkled, the shrimps were pretty large though. 3. Beef Teriyaki & Chicken Curry (with pork fried rice) - the beef was on a skewer and actually tasted okay. The chicken was tasteless by itself, but unfortunately they also drenched it in "curry" comparable to bile. Similar to the white rice, the pork fried rice tasted dry/reheated. 4. Shumai - 10 crushed lukewarm pieces that my mom and I couldn't choke down. Maybe they didn't microwave it long enough?
