This is our favorite Date Night spot whenever we are out in the desert. The food is always delicious and the service is excellent.

We were in the area for a road trip, and the high Yelp review ratings brought us here! We came on a Saturday night with live music performance. My favorite was the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Livers. I have never seen chicken liver fried before, and it's amazingly tasty!! The Cauliflower Puree came with it was the perfect companion for the fish. We had the Paella Negra, and it's available on Friday and Saturday only. The seafood in the paella looked a bit undercooked. I was wishing that the Roasted Brussels Sprouts was more roasted and crispy, but it came out more like pan-fried. The pitcher sangria was a good deal. It's quite enjoyable. They only have red sangria though. The Chocolate Churro had warm chocolate in the center, and it's a bit crispy on the outside. It's perfect. Parking is complimentary valet. Best of all, it has 10% off with Yelp check-in! My cell phone had no signal inside the restaurant, but the restaurant has free wifi available. read more

Food made up for that experience (per my friends) who had the tomahawk steak, paella, and the octopus. Not worth the price. Paella was dense and not very flavorful with overcooked seafood. Braised short ribs were uninspired and although supposedly were to be served with a red wine reduction, this was white and gloppy. We also ordered Iberico jamon and were expecting it to be served with pan tomate or something like that. Instead, it was just a pile (literally) of jamon. For $60, you'd think they could have been a bit more creative with the presentation. I probably won't go back. read more

My journey began on a delayed (and then canceled) flight out of Texas during which I had the chance to pick my seat partner's brain about recommendations for a weekend in the desert / Palm Springs area. Over the hours of boarding & reboarding the plane trying to beat the thunderstorm, he emphasized that I NEEDED to visit Catalan and see Chef Drew, who makes the best Mediterranean food he had ever tasted. Since I had been missing out for all these years, in fact, he recommended I go the following weekend since it was a imperative that I taste Catalan! Taking the recommendation to heart, I took my fiance here for his birthday recently, and the food lived up to the hype! We didn't get the chance to meet Chef Drew this time, unfortunately, but we hope to visit again very soon and try our chances again! I called in advance to make a reservation and ended up leaving a message with my details. They never called back to confirm, but upon arriving, I was relieved to see that our reservation had been processed. We were greeted by a cheerful hostess who found us a booth very quickly. The restaurant was much larger & spacious than I expected (though I suppose it's Palm Springs, and most things are bigger than in LA). In addition to a crowded bar area, there was a large family party and numerous smaller groups in the tables & booths surrounding the space. We started with octopus, smoked fish dip and a pitcher of sangria. All were amazing and so flavorful... I'm a frequent traveler and have been eating my share of octopus at restaurants around San Diego County, and this was LEAGUES better than any octopus/calamari dish I've had in years. Additionally, they were able to accommodate me being gluten free by providing additional cucumber slices for the dip instead of the pita bread. Entrees: We ordered the lamb and scallops dinners.... both were delicious; but the scallops blew us away! So much incredible flavor in every bite, and wonderful, soft texture. The corn/chorizo/shishito blend on the side was also a delight with every mouthful. We had to get dessert & espresso, of course, for the birthday celebration -- more heavenly flavors. Next time we visit, I'd like to try even more of the fish / seafood dishes, especially a paella. Looking forward to coming back again soon!! read more

I'm only giving 2 stars because they are not Covid compliant as far as number of people eating in the restaurant/indoor courtyard patio. So if you're looking for Covid compliant, this is not your place. The staff wear masks and that's about it. If Covid doesn't bug you then I'd say go for it, you'll have a good meal. We have eaten at Catalan several times and enjoy their food. The fish dip is delish, and paella is really good too. They used to have a dish called angry prawns that was so good, but they done have it anymore. The lamb is also a good choice. Our food was good this time too and did not disappoint! I understand that it must be really hard for restaurants with Covid, but I feel they aren't up to standard as far as compliance is concerned, which bums me out. We won't be back until Covid numbers are better or until they are more compliant. read more

We called on a Sunday night of a holiday weekend and they were booked. The owner decided since we are regulars that he could fit us in. This meant a great deal to us, as we had family in town and wanted good food. We ordered crispy chickpeas, olives, bread, and street corn for appetizers. They were all fabulous, especially the crispy chickpeas. We put them in our spinach salad and it made it that much tastier! The entrees we ordered were the seafood chorizo bowl, scallops, shrimp and linguine, and the lamb chops. It was all delicious and we cleared all of our plates! My girl and I had a nice little get away to the hot springs and we decided to come here to have our date night and I have to say we had an amazing night. Our sever Cory was amazing. He gave us the best service. We didn't have to ask for anything such as refills, napkins, etc. he was just in top of it all. We started with the eastern diver scallops for our appetizer even though it's an entree in itself. Scallops were cooked to perfection and we were impressed how the pomegranate seeds made a world of difference to the plate. I highly recommend this plate to anyone that loves seafood. My girlfriend had the steak cooked medium rare and they nailed it. Steak was well seasoned. I ordered the iberico pork chop cooked medium. Hands down the best pork I've ever ate. It was undercooked but the chef fixed it immediately. I was so surprised he came out himself and apologized about the mishap. He made sure that everything was okay and the funny thing is that I wasn't bothered by it being undercooked, I mean it's a huge thick piece of pig he was cooking. But I really did appreciate him going the extra mile making sure that problem was resolved. He also gave us complimentary desserts which was also amazing For dessert we had the apple crisps, churos, and the rice pudding. All were amazing. Wow wow wow. We ordered just 1 item under the pasta category, but now I wish we had ordered a few to share with the table. The cavatappi & beef cheek with truffle butter was amaaaaaaaaazing. Now I am curious for their black spaghetti and their other pasta dish. The charred octopus was ok. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't a flavor or texture bomb of pleasurable explosion like the cavatappi was. The paella was my least favorite. I just don't like my rice or pastas to be too al dente. I like my starches cooked through. Maybe that is how all paellas are supposed to be and I am just not a paella person. The only other time I had paella was in Spain but i don't remember it being so al dente to the point where I didn't want to eat anymore of it. Other than the paella being too al dente for me, everything else was super duper delicious. I will be coming back here again the next time I visit Palm Springs. read more

If you care about Covid safety beware of this place. We had a 7:30 reservation for last Saturday night and they were clearly overbooked. Their "outdoor area" really is just a central courtyard with a high ceiling and small openings at the ceiling to the outdoors. They had multiple tables seated inside and the tables on the patio were pretty close together. Some manager tried to tell us about their great airflow before we walked out. We couldn't write a review on Opentable because they didn't seat our table so here I am. If you don't care about sharing air with a bunch of strangers this is probably a fine place. read more

ambience is spot on. they have a tree in the center of the restaurant that goes all the way above the roof, with fairy lights all over it. It's enchanting and charming. the service is good. The prices are on the higher end. The food is artistic or rather Artisanal and is adequate. Sometimes you'll get a really good dish, like the octopus pasta that they had that was black in color and tasted fantastic with all the seafood, then they get rid of it. read more

My hubby took my for a dinner date at Catalan's. The menu had many options and hard to decide, I am always adventurous and ready to try new plates. When I saw this plate I was sold. The pasta was coon perfect, flavor was good but when I broke the yolk it was another level. My husband had the paella but did not made it to the picture lol, he really like the flavor and said he would order it again. Overall we had a great time and dinner. Maybe I went when they were having an off night, but overall Catalan was pretty disappointing, especially at that price point. First, a COVID note. Table spacing here was SUPER close. Both me and my partner were basically back-to-back with other diners and all booths were filled. Up. So, if you're COVID conscious definitely keep that in mind. Okay, onto the actual dining. We arrived a few minutes late and had to wait for an additional 15 minutes in order to be seated. Our server was then slow getting our drink orders and then the drinks themselves also came out slowly. The end result was that we spent almost 40 minutes from arrival to getting drinks. Fortunately they did give us some bread for the table, which had a tasy chimmichurri situation. For food we got the paella, beets, and potatoes. It was all... Fine. After seeing the reviews and price point I was expecting to be really blown away by something. However, nothing really stood out. The paella felt underseasoned and the rice was al-dente, and the beet salad really just tasted like... Some beets. The potatoes were tasty and the dusting of pecorino added a nice touch. Overall though, slow service, too-close tables and okay food makes Catalan a place I would not return to. read more

I chose Catalan to celebrate by recent birthday. It's conveniently located 10 minutes away from where we were staying and the menu looked enticing. Although it is a Spanish restaurant, the dinner menu mainly consists of large entrees instead of tapas. If you're more interested in tapas, head over to their bar area. Since it was Sunday evening, we ordered the Paella Mixta and Sangria special. They say it's for 2 but trust me, it would be enough for 3 people. The paella had tons of goodies like clams, shrimp, chicken, chorizo. The sangria was refreshing and fruity. Against our better judgment, we also ordered the Iberico Pork Tenderloin. It was a big piece of pork and unfortunately, the pork was tough and dry. That said, the manchego polenta served with it was excellent. Great food, great service, at a great price makes Catalan a winner. read more

Okay so the pomegranate mock tail was sooo good. The arugula salad was also very yummy. Bread and pesto also very yummy! Unfortunately other than that we didn't like the rest of what we got at all. The Paella was not edible to me at all): the rice was super undercooked and hard. The flavor of it was not appetizing either (I've had good paella before). The Tomahawk steak was super fibrous I kept having to spit out parts that I could not break down and swallow. You could tell parts were suppose to be cut off the steak and also rendered much more. Yucon potatoes waaaaay too salty. I was really looking forward to this place so I'm pretty bummed ): the waiter was very sweet though. We have eaten here before but NEVER on a holiday like Valentine Day. Wild weather hampered the seatings in the restaurant as they have an interior patio but several tables couldn't be used due to dripping rain. Needless to say, reservations were a tad late. But despite that, we had a fabulous evening!! A $90 per person Prefix meal was promptly served course by course and all were fantastic! Wedge salad, charred octopus appetizer, a fabulous pork chop and a tasty caramel creme dessert for me and an Arugula apple salad, fried crab balls (can't remember the French name), rack of lamb cooked perfectly and a cheesecake with fruit compote on top...all amazing!! They had lots of serving staff so not a problem ever waiting except at the end when our waiter seemed to disappear for quite some time and it took about 30 minutes to get our check. Again, did not detract from the evening. We brought our own wine so nothing to report there but $30 corkage fee seemed steep. I applaud the owner who I met and his staff for providing a lovely evening for those who focused on the right things....good food and great service!! read more

Dined at Catalan last evening. This is the second time at the restaurant (and probably our last). Our dinner companions chose Catalan because they had never tried it and they wanted to try the paella. Upon arrival, for a 7:30 reservation, the restaurant didn't seem particularly busy. We were seated relatively promptly and given limited menus since they were participating in Restaurant Week in the valley. When our server finally came back to the table, we were informed that they were out of multiple items on their already abbreviated menu. We were starting to place our orders when the server abruptly walked off to another table. When he finally came back about 10 minutes later, we made our selections only to find out at the end of the main course that the dessert selections we had made upon our original order had also become unavailable. They offered some mediocre alternatives that we decided against and called it a night. Sadly, the facility looked as tired as the service. Nothing screams cleanliness more than a swamp cooler at the front door that hadn't cleaned in months. Looks like to me Catalan should be renamed Catastrophe. read more

Facilities: There's no legit "outdoor" dining. Cental patio is mixed with indoors and totally covered up so there's no sky at all. Technically it is all indoor dining. Very crowded too. Food: Do not order mussels. They are nothing like photos or menu description. It was mussels in water with little parsley bits. No garlic, no saffron, nothing else. Awful. Paella was ok. Black pasta dish was so so...quite salty. Dessert was ok. Service: It was good but slow. They were very busy though. Overall: I would not recommend. read more

I loved the atmosphere in this restaurant! We ate in the courtyard patio with an open air ceiling and classic European cobble floor- the restaurant interior had beautiful wood floors and exposed beams accented with large artwork. It was not overdone. The FOOD! The chief brought out our olives and complimentary bread and pesto (I actually bought a container of pesto go take home it was the most delicious I've ever tasted) and were able to get recommendations of the menu. I ordered the short rib and about went to heaven upon the first bite!! My husbands heart wanted paella and so he got their "version", which they claimed it was their "version" , it was just ok. I called here on a whim to see if they had any availability and we were lucky enough that Dylana the hostess squeezed us in. She's not just a hostess, but she was also help clearing tables and coming by our table often to make sure we were being taken care of. The icing on the cake was that the food was awesome!!!! This was the first time that I visit Catalán Restaurant, it was to celebrate my Brother's birthday, we were a party of 7. We love Spanish/Mediterranean food, we were looking specifically for Paella and Catalán Restaurant seemed like a good option, we have been wanting to visit for quite some time but it is difficult with a 5PM opening time. I made a reservation, got a text message asking me to confirm that "I'Il be there", I replied "YES" and everything seemed to be on track. I get an E-mail the day of, asking me to confirm that I will be showing up, from my perspective this was already answered by TEXT (don't know how many times is enough to confirm), I didn't see the E-mail until Friday (05/24/2024), by the time I checked, my reservation was already cancelled at 10:59AM even though I confirmed through TEXT MESSAGE. I proceeded to call and left a message (Restaurant does not open until 5PM) to ask them to call me back as soon as possible because my plans for the day were based on that visit to the restaurant. I went ahead and made another reservation (that was confirmed) for 05:30PM just in case. I called multiple times on my way to the restaurant to find out what was going on but noone answered. I made on time for the 05:30PM reservation, I came in and thankfully the place was completely empty but this was very frustrating and upsetting to say the least. I don't know if it is the reservation app or the restaurant but someone has to get it together as you give the impression to be a high end restaurant but this business practice is below standards. That being said, I am understanding and considering that the restaurant was empty I decided to not make a big deal about it and move on. We were sat by a very nice hostess/waiter, she was super friendly, professional and overall delightful. As we were going through the menus I noticed that there was some type of sauce on multiple pages. Once again, I exercised empathy, brought it up to the waiters attention (she apologized properly) so it didn't happen with other clients later on the day. This wouldn't be a big deal but it might be linked or give the impression to be linked to the reason I am writing this review, the service, food and ambience get 5, 1 and 3 respectively, the food was OK (a 3) but my son came back home and was unable to sleep because he was vomiting (5 to 6 times) throughout the night, he is dealing with a 100.8 fever, a headache and symptoms potentially related to contaminated foods, drinks, or surfaces. I was already thinking about not coming back but after this, I will DEFINITELY NOT BE COMING BACK. I wanted to send the review and situation directly to the restaurant but there's no way to contact the restaurant other than phone and based on my experience it was not answered and voicemail is not being checked. I would highly recommend to add an E-mail contact as my main intention was to bring my concerns and bad experience to the restaurant Manager/Owners and not expose it in a public set up like yelp. Our family came for Christmas dinner and had the worst dining experience ever. I should have followed my instinct and left the moment we checked in. The host coldly greeted us while looking at her phone, not even looking up to make eye contact. They should have said it is only a prix fixe menu for $80/pp when we made the reservation or when we checked in. Restaurants usually showcase their best items if that is what they want to offer. Unfortunately, they decided to throw items together without regard for their customers during this special night. The Caesar salad served is at best 4 spoonful of romaine lettuce and crackers sprinkled on top. With already a very limited menu, they ran out of the bone marrow so we ended up with the chicken liver that was over fried and burnt. The paella was so wet that it resembles a risotto. We also had to wait a long time in between courses. Sadly, the best part of the meal was the vanilla ice cream which I could have bought from the store. Will definitely not recommend this place after our experience. read more

Absolutely a perfect dining experience. We loved the covered outdoor patio area, service was spot on, and the food was delicious. I had the scallops and they were perfectly cooked, not rubbery, with great flavors. My friends had fish and loved both dishes.
