We ate here two nights in a row it was that good! The first night we got the mussels, I ordered the lamb chops, and my husband ordered the short rib. The mussels are normally cooked with some kind of pork, which I don't eat, but when I asked if it was possible to get it without pork, they said they could definitely do that, which is never expected but definitely always appreciated! The lamb chops were delicious and cooked to perfection. They came on a bed of some sort of salad, with some aioli and mint jelly. Personally the salad and jelly didn't work for me but my husband's short rib (which was also cooked perfectly) came on a bed of cauliflower puree which was so delicious that I ate half. On night two, I ordered the lamb chops again but requested they be served with the cauliflower puree, and they happily obliged. My husband got branzino, which he thought was good but I thought it was great, and I usually don't care for it. Pro tip: They offer a $15 corkage fee but I think you may have to ask when you make a reservation and they also have a $15 coupon (business card) at the front desk. The service was great, both of our waitresses were perfectly attentive and the bussers were on point. This is now one of my favorite restaurants in the area and we plan to come back every time we are in town. read more

After a day of sightseeing we were hungry, driving down Hwy 111 and didn't have a reservation on a Friday night. We saw Mediterranean on their restaurant sign and quickly pulled in. The woman at the front desk (who happened to be the owner) asked if we had a reservation and when we said no, gave us a couple of options for seating. We chose a table in the front. We were waited on promptly and spent a lot of time perusing their menu because there were so many wonderful choices. I have to mention their bread and herb dipping sauce, it was that good! I had the fish of the day (swordfish) my friends had the seafood (squid ink) pasta and chicken pesto pasta. All of our dishes were excellent. The sauce that my saffron risotto and fish sat on was so good, I wanted to lick my plate clean. Good thing we saved some of that delicious bread. The owner came over to our table after our meal and gave us some history of the restaurant as she and her husband have only owned the restaurant for a year or so. I love to try a new spot when traveling. Little tapas is always the key to be able to try multiple dishes. we had Mediterranean Trio House classic Hummus, Babaganoush, and Romesco served with grilled Pita bread. My favorite was the Romesco, it had a very unique and good flavor to it. Seafood Paella Shrimp, calamari, mussels, peas, saffron and bomba rice. This one didn't have as much flavor as we would like. Creamy Seafood Pasta Squid ink pasta with cherry tomato, jumbo shrimp, fresh fish, squid and mussels in a creamy saffron sauce. This is one of my favorite dish and the little 6year old we had there loved it too. 12 oz Prime Ribeye Crushed Yukon gold potatoes served with chimichurri and blue cheese. Good potatoes and the chimichurri was a nice touch for the ribeye. Shishito pepper lacked flavor, we just paired it with our food. CATALAN RESTAURANT in Rancho Mirage is only 15 minutes from downtown Palm Springs, and well worth the short drive. We came for their SUMMER PREFIX SPECIAL MENU and it did not disappoint. This is an amazing offer of three delicious courses: A starter choice of one of three excellent salads, a choice of varied entrées, including their famous mixed seafood, chicken and sausage paella (omg! The BEST!) and a choice of two super delicious top of the line desserts, all for $50! Unbelievable value! The beautiful rooms which are filled with art and high ceilings and the large bright patio at Catalan whisked me away to the Catalonia area north of Barcelona where I spend a good amount of vacation time. The food here is just as delicious as it was there, maybe better. Everything on the menu is great but at this time of year the thing to come for is this summer special. Even the desserts were perfect. Hot from the fryer churros filled with melting hot fudge were literally the best we have ever tasted. And we also had a very caramelly cream caramel served pot de crème style, which was equally delicious and a wonderful counterpoint to the hot churros Service from this family owned and run business was attentive and friendly. The wine list was excellent and I chose a Spanish red to accompany my dinner. They have a nightly happy hour in the large bar area, too, with discounted specials and its own menu. It was our 43rd anniversary and I wanted to try someplace new in the area of Rancho Mirage. Catalan was easy to find on Hwy 111 and has ample parking to the left of the building . Inside there are booths , tables and an indoor patio as well . Our server was Darwin who recommended the paella and the branzino . We opted for the mixta paella which had mussels , shrimp , calamari, chicken and chorizo . I chose the branzino with saffron risotto and spinach. For an appetizer we tried the fried calamari which was super tender with a light fried batter..... delish ! The branzino is the winner -- pan fried with a light yellow sauce , more than enough for one person . For dessert the restaurant provided a complimentary salt caramel custard for our anniversary what a nice touch ! I think we unfortunately caught the server on her first night so not 100% her fault we ordered a charcuterie board and it literally came out with one meat one cheese, some very stale bread and olives although the menu said pickled cauliflower and we asked for a replacement and she came back with the olives and said this is all I have the manager eventually brought carrots out, but it was a $50 board for what should've been about a $15 board. Other items on other tables look very good so maybe they're great. The pricing seemed expensive for the quality. There was a smell of urine when you first walk into the door. The place definitely did not feel like it had been cleaned in a while. read more

We brought our friend who lives in Palm Desert. Like us, he'd seen this place a number of times but had never been. Warmly greeted by the hostess and sat in the atrium at her recommendation. Cocktails ordered and the hot bread and pesto brought out promptly. I went with the fixed price dinner - arugula and apple salad, rib eye and chocolate filled churro. Everything was delicious and I heard big raves about the octopus starter. The hot, chocolate filled churro was one of the best things I've had in a bit. Forgot to use our coupon from our June visit but maybe we'll remember to pull it out on our next trip. Although it was getting late, did not feel rushed at all. read more

Amazing ambiance, the restaurant is set up very uniquely and it is definitely a vibe. The owners and staff were absolutely the sweetest. I went with the prefix menu, and tried the patella. It was amazing!! I can't stop thinking about that salad also. Looking forward to coming back and trying some Tapas. We had our New Year's Eve dinner at Catalan Mediterranean Restaurant in Rancho Mirage, and it was absolutely one of the best New Year's Eve dinners we've ever had. We ordered the prix fixe menu and everything was perfect. The price was very reasonable for such gourmet, beautifully prepared food. We started with the empanadas and the wedge salad--both were excellent. For entrées, I had the scallops with spinach and risotto (an absolute must-try--cooked to perfection), and my husband had the Chilean sea bass with risotto and loved it. Dessert was phenomenal: cheesecake for me and rice pudding for him. It's family-owned and operated, and you can really feel the warm, welcoming atmosphere. I was so hoping to have Great Paella on Valentines Evening! Made an online reservation on yelp. The day of we received a text to confirm! They thanked me for confirming. Then.....we get there and the young blonde brat at the entrance said she didn't have my reservation! I showed her the conformation text! She informed me "They" didn't go by that!!! But she would try to fit us in, even though they were completely booked! Immediately the owner showed up and seated us Promply. (There were empty tables near us the entire meal) Sad to say the Paella was boring, a single note of flavor, without the crispy rice bottom traditionally a Paella. We've made several visits, both with and without reservations, and have had fairly good experiences. The drinks and food are usually solid; however, the service can be hit or miss. It's never been terrible, but some wait staff have been better trained, and are more friendly, than others. The overall ambiance is nice, and I love the indoor/outdoor patio. We've always been at night, so it's a little hard to describe, but there's an internal courtyard with an open-air roof, and sunshades. Makes for a unique experience. FOOD: They start you off with a complimentary bread board, which includes a pesto spread. They have a shareable appetizer sampler, the Chef's Mixed Tapas Plate, which is a nice way to start. We also enjoy the Charred Spanish Octopus, the Chicken Livers, and the Cheese & Charcuterie Board. We've tried quite a few entrées off their menu, and some of our favorites have been: Pallela Mixta, Cavatappi Beef Cheek & Truffle Butter, Lamb Chops with warm cabbage, and Seafood Pasta with cream sauce. Love the desserts too. Overall, Catalan Mediterranean is a nice place, great atmosphere, and good food. Can be a little pricey, but we don't eat here every night, so I'm okay with splurging occasionally. I recommend you check them out. read more

We came on a very quiet night, only two tables with guests, us and one other. It is a large space with seating at tables, the bar, the indoor atrium and booths. The servers and hostess were very professional and attentive. We had meat and fish dishes and they were just average, with little to no flavor. The bone marrow was meager and oily. The octopus was without gilled taste, though tender. The short ribs were dry. The fish was well prepared but had little flavor. For two people, no alcohol, it was almost $200, so for us, there wasn't enough value for that price. read more

Had not been back to Catalan in a few years and it is under new ownership and wow, the food was out of this world. One of the best meals I've had in a long time in the Coachella Valley or anywhere. My wife and I had the Spanish grilled octopus and the beet Barata salad and of course, the seafood paella. All three were absolutely spectacular. The restaurant is gorgeous inside and the soft music in the background made for the perfect evening. I made a 5:15 res.. early dinner on a Monday! While under new ownership, the menu has been elevated and did not disappoint! We started off with the hummus trio which was a hit!! All of the flavors were there- red pepper, classic hummus, and edamame - genius, perfectly baked pita bread! I went for the seafood paella, because paella is something that you don't see in many menus- this one was delicious! A generous portion and perfect spice for me! My friend ordered the fish, which I didn't try but looked lovely and her expression showed her delight! We were too full for dessert but I REALLY want chocolate churros, next time!! Service was great, it was Monday evening- we were excited to find a place to dine that was open on a Monday! : ) our server was pleasant, it seemed like he knew the perfect timing to stop by and offered our refills at the perfect time! Dietary restrictions? STAY AWAY So.. we had a reservation here for our 20th anniversary on Dec 25. Because I have a dairy allergy, I called ahead and asked if that was going to be a problem. The lady that answered the phone checked our reservation and said that there would be no issues at all and that there were plenty of options for me. Issues - there were. The lady on the phone failed to tell me it was a prix fixe evening and that indeed I was not going to be able to eat most of the dishes - especially no dessert. The server had NO IDEA what was in the food, so the manager came by. He was not apologetic at all about the fact that I was mis-informed. I ended up ordering the steak which was awfully under-seasoned. Clealry the kitchen did not know how to adapt the dish to be made without butter, which is pretty basic in my book. They are likely following recipes to the tee and cant adapt the dishes - more cooks than chefs. Note to Catalan: if you cant accommodate someones diet, that's OK - just dont lie about it and let them have a good meal elsewhere. read more

We had a reservation to dine here and celebrate a birthday while in Palm Springs area. We had explored Joshua Tree earlier in the day, and weren't too dressed up for dinner. Coming during the weekend, we thought it'd be busy, but it wasn't when we arrived. The kind lady at the entrance greeted us and we could sit practically anywhere in the restaurant. The atmosphere was very clean and very well-curated. The servers were attentive, knowledgeable, and overall great. We ordered the chicken, which was the best I have ever had from a restaurant. The soft meat fell off the bone and melted in my mouth. It tasted so good and was spiced just right--not too spicy, not bland. We also had the hummus, which did not disappoint. It came in three different varieties, one of which I loved, but I couldn't tell what was in it. And the pesto was also delicious.
