Had a chance to try Cat & Cloud when in Santa Cruz and this is a really cute spot. Not too big but enough seats inside and outside with lots of cute art and a fun vibe. Cat and Cloud on Portola is a no-doubt five star coffee joint and local favorite. But is this high score due to the people or their flavorful brew? On one hand the staff is energetic, friendly, eclectic and fun. (Shout out, Katie!) On the other, the coffee is flavorful, well prepared, and never bitter. I absolutely LOVE this quirky coffeeshop! My friends an I love to come here after surfing to enjoy a coffee & some kind of snack. The service is always super friendly and welcoming and the ambiance just perfect. There's plenty of fresh air and natural light for you to sip and enjoy your coffee. Take some time to peruse their merch and artwork. It's all super cute! Minus 1 star for the non-dairy milk $1.25 upcharge and the high prices. I say this in nearly all my coffee/tea shop reviews- you're only using a few ounces of "milk" but charging what half a carton of nondairy milk would cost. Quickly placed our to go order at the counter, then grabbed a seat on the patio as we waited. Drinks: Strawberry Matcha with Oat Milk - really good, great balance of sweetness, slightly green grassy earthiness from the matcha and the strawberry milk added a refreshing sweet tart fruit note Espresso tonic - solid, nice roasted coffee notes with slight acidity and bitter notes, sparkling tonic made for a sweet refreshing pick me up Avocado toast - good, fairly large slice of a rustic country loaf style bread, loaded with creamy smashed avocado, pumpkin seeds which added a nice crunchy texture and micro greens for freshness, dressed with a bit of olive oil and lemon juice Everything Toast - solid - same great bread from Manresa bakery, topped with a cream cheese type smear, cucumbers, micro greens and everything seasoning, flavors were okay on this one prefered the avocado slightly more Service was solid, quick and efficient, order at the counter and pick up at the window when ready. On my way home to Sac from a weekend on the Santa Cruz coast, I consulted my Yelp fam to lead me to a good small-business, local coffee shop & they did not disappoint! The location is right on the corner and parking is super limited; its clearly a local spot with most of their clientele being pedestrians or bicyclists m, which is wonderful. They have a sort of outdoor sunroom-type space that opens to a bright patio w lots of seating and is dog-friendly. Anywhere that supplies doggie water bowls around the property gets an extra star from me. :) The menu is very limited and simple. They offer coffee and tea, iced or hot, and use local organically sourced chocolate for their mochas. We got an iced oat milk mocha, an iced mocha, and my daughter got an iced vanilla milk. Again, simple menu but execution was great and they take their time. You order inside and pick up at a walk up window on the patio outside, where you can lounge and enjoy the weather, SC scenery, and everyone's super friendly from the service staff to the customers. The concept art is adorable too, and honestly part of why we tried it. Very Santa Cruz ;) They have food that seemed really popular as well as good looking pastries as well. I regret not taking pics of our drinks or the place but I would come back on my next visit for sure. read more

Such a chill coffee shop to hang out or study! I traveled to Santa Cruz to visit Natural Bridges State Beach, but stopped here on my way. I love the interior decorations and the murals on the walls. The barista who rung me up was super friendly and we had a nice conversation. I ordered a hot mocha and a breakfast burrito. Breakfast Burrito: 5/5 This may be the best breakfast burrito I've ever had in my entire life. The tater tots are DELICIOUS. Eggs are YUM. The sauce is PERFECT. It was honestly amazing and 100% worth trying. I plan to buy this every time I come back to Santa Cruz. Mocha: 4/5 Great presentation! This used to be one of my fave spots when I lived in the area between 2019-2021 because of the delicious coffee and wonderful service. I moved away for a few years and came back super excited to have some cat & cloud but it is not the same as it used to be. :( disappointing that the baristas were not friendly and the quality of the drinks and food has plummeted. They also offered to add more sweetness after we tasted it too. The matcha was alright, you can definitely taste the matcha but there wasn't really anything special. They definitely use high-quality beans for their beverages and you can tell. Prices were a little steep, but it is more of a niche coffee spot. All in all, definitely a good cup of coffee and worth a stop if you find yourself in the area. Cat & Cloud may very well be Santa Cruz's premier coffee roaster and cafe--beating out, in my opinion, local legends like Verve. I actually first saw their beans at a coffee shop in the central valley and was surprised that I'd never taken notice of their location on Portola. I decided to go check it out and try both their hot and cold espresso drinks. Hot latte and iced mocha were both excellent, with my girlfriend making the bold claim that the mocha was "the best thing" she's "ever tasted." She's not a coffee drinker and never finishes anything from Starbucks or Peet's. It was extremely rich and chocolatey, with a delicious coffee-chocolate flavor coming from the espresso (which is allowed to express its natural flavors through their roasting process much more than beans at a place like Starbucks which are scorched to shit in order to last longer or something). The latte was also excellent, and definitely ranked as the best I've ever purchased from a cafe. Perfectly steamed milk that integrated seamlessly with the espresso. The shop is cute, with a fairly typical Santa Cruz vibe that seems to attract college students, local creatives, and people working office jobs from home alike. Parking is a bit tight but they do have their own lot in the back with maybe somewhere between 6 and 12 spots. The workers there were all very friendly and not in a fake Starbucks way. It felt more like they were just in a good mood and had a lot of fun making coffee and doing latte art and whatnot. My girlfriend is demanding we go back again today, so I'd say Cat & Cloud is a major hit. read more

Came here on a Sunday afternoon and really liked the staff here - super kind people and the seating was ample! Good: I like how there are outlets and fast wifi here! There's also a lot of owners with dogs that frequent this location which is nice to watch as you eat. The sesame bagel was amazing though! Super tasty with the scallion cream cheese. Would recommend that combo.
