By far the best meal I had in Nola, and probably a top 10 in my lifetime travels. Castnet is very clearly a local secret, and is off the beaten path about 20 mins from the French Quarter. The space itself is no frills but we knew we found something good when we pulled up to a 90% full parking lot at 2 pm, well past prime lunch time. The space is divided in two--the left is for the raw/boiled seafood counter, where you're mostly ordering by the pound. My parents ordered a pint of oysters, two lobsters ($15 each) & $4/lb crawfish from this side. The right side is for fried/cooked food, where I ordered a soft shell crab po boy (GIANT, btw) and potato salad. My first bite of our meal was the potato salad, and it was easily the best I've ever had. I figured that if they put so much love in something as trivial as potato salad, the rest of it would be mind blowing, and that assumption was spot on. I had never had soft shell crab that was fried whole, and I must say the end result was truly AMAZING. It's a textural wonderland, and the crab itself was suuuper meaty (so much that my dad had a bite and thought it was fish filet)! The raw oysters were SO fresh with no icky brine whatsoever, and were exactly what we were looking for. As for the boiled food, my parents became crawfish converts after this meal. We actually all preferred the crawfish over lobster, since the lobster was a tad bit overseasoned for us, but the crawfish was truly incredible. The service was friendly and excellent, despite it being a madhouse filled with hungry patrons. Oh, and we loved it so much that we came back for dinner a few hours later. This is the second time I have been here while visiting New Orleans. Had to have some more of there fantastic seafood . My God for the price and the taste . This is the place to come to !! It's not a restaurant, but a place to buy some food and take out or sit in two benches . If you want to take fresh seafood home this is the place to buy. We are in town till tomorrow so we bought 4 pounds of crawfish, shrimp, crab and oysters. If your out of town this is a have to go to and buy to restock your refrigerator when you get home . This is a dive seafood joint slinging boiled and fried delicacies from the waters of the area and beyond. They seem to have a decent sized line most of the time here and you wait to get to the cash register to order and then you wait to pick your food up after if to go or sit down with your number at a table for dining in. They are noted and very popular for their boiled crawfish and during the season that is probably the most popular item here. On my last visit I had a fried trout filet which was good, a shrimp sandwich on bun that was good and fried oysters which were overcooked which made them too hard and rubbery. Everything was great. This is definitely where the locals go. We ordered crawfish, corn, and potatoes. We also had the shrimp and oyster Po boy. Everything was fulfilling and yummy to my tummy. Ha ha no seriously it was really good. There were tons of locals that offered great conversation along with good food. Castnet is a seafood market along with a to go restaurant. They do have a few tables inside and outside. Next door is a snowcone spot along with a rib joint. The rib place wasn't open but the snowcone spot was. I would highly recommend this spot. The prices were the best I've seen for crawfish. $5lb for large crawfish. I think the best part was everyone was from nearby and not tourist. This place is definitely not a tourist trap. read more

It took five days to find decent food at a decent price that is deliciously appreciated. We came from Cali and messed around and was told to go to Danny & Clyde's for a Po Boy. Talking about angry! In Laws told me to make sure to go to Cast Net. I was almost ready to give up, but had to give NOLA one more try. Thank God for chances.....Cast Net placed saving grace back in my heart the day before Fat Tuesday. Hmm so Castnet was claimed to be similiar to the packing house in south Dallas in Dallas, TX, but a seafood version. Hmmm I wouldn't go so far to say that buuuuuut I liked it. It was similiar in the sense that on one side of the joint there was a fish market and customers could order however much crawfish or fresh fish they wanted. Beside that there was another small area where customers could order platters of seafood, including poboys, cooked crab, cooked crawfish, etc. Then, there was a third section in the back that was open to seating, but I believe it was a Burger joint that customers could order burger and fries from. So about the food.. I ordered a shrimp po boy with everything and sampled a soft shell crab and crawfish and maaaaan it was good. It was really good, especially when I threw some Crystal's hot sauce on dem skrimps. Whew! Now the flavor on the skrimps (not shrimps, those boys were so good we're gonna have to throw sum Texas twang on dem skrimps). Okay okay, so the shrimps were pretty freaking good. When I tell you they were seasoned with the right amount of salt and pepper and batter. Nothing too too special was crazy about the flavor, but it was really nice to taste pretty size shrimps with flavor. Most places just use the batter for their seasoning which is often times disappointing...not Castnet. The crawfish here is definitely on point...one of the best that I've ever tasted. There's a good amount of savory and flavorful juice in the head and plentyyyyy of meat in the tail. Andddd the soft shell crab, it was my first time having it and it was good. The fried shell was flavorful and so was the crab meat-i'm a lil partial though because crab is my favorite. Now- the ONLY thing I didn't like about my experience here was the French bread on my poboy. Do I'm a Txas gal and we love out breads buttered and crisp around the edges but soft on the outside. Apparently Castnet, and any authentic NO poboy's French bread might not be toasty like I've had at other restaurant in TX and in NO. The bread at Castnet was a lil hard and initially it was a lil touch to bite into. If you have a loose tooth the bread here will definitely help you out with taking care of that. I went here to order a shrimp po-boy and hot sausage po-boy for my mother. I've been going here since a kid and it's like home. However when I went this time my order was wrong, I asked for a hot sausage po-boy fully dressed without tomatoes (my mom can't eat tomatoes) add cheese and upon reaching home I checked the food and the hot sausage po-boy wasn't fully dressed the only thing it had on it was cheese and big tomato slices throughout sandwich. She couldn't eat it and I know they closed at 5 so I wouldn't have made it back in time to return it. read more

Castnet Seafood is seriously underrated in my opinion. It's a 30 minute drive for me, so I'm not able to get here as often as I'd like. But it's a treat every time I visit. The shrimp poboy is the best in New Orleans, hands down! It's full of perfectly fried, well seasoned shrimp. The poboy is so good that I always seem to forget that I have fries also lol. I like to arrive prior to 11am to ensure a parking spot, a seat and that I beat the crowd. While I mainly eat the shrimp, I have tasted the catfish and it's delicious as well. The owner is very present and on every visit he has come over to ask how everything is. Give it a try...I cannot recommend this place enough! read more

I ordered a shrimp poboy dressed. All of the fixings were fresh and they did not hold back on the shrimp. I also ordered a half dozen of boiled blue crabs( should have ordered a dozen) they were so fresh and the didn't smell "fishy" like the crabs you get at some of the other restaurants in the area(Cajuns, Danny's, Sols, MidCity). The ambiance is that of a local seafood market, not to fancy, not shabby. You can get your boiled seafood and fresh seafood on the same side of the market.
