The pan fried chicken is pretty middling. I love fried chicken and have become pretty well experienced in it particularly southern fried chicken. As pointed out in some 5 star reviews, it is lightly seasoned. And that is a problem for fried chicken. I can't say what style they're using or if they just have their own batter recipe, but its disappointing. This was the second time I had their chicken and I had the same experience the first time. The other disappointment is the chicken itself is flavorless. For a good southern fried chicken you want to have flavor in the chicken itself perhaps by brining. Lastly, the oil. Holy cow the chicken was oily. I could actually taste the oil almost as much and in some cases more that the batter. I do understand people's enthusiasm about a local establishment and that is fair, you want to support local business. The problematic outcome of that is they don't need to try harder or do better. The other consideration is the population of people who are eating it. If you've never been to the south, and I saw one poster who claimed to be from the south but gave it a 5 star comparison (I would love to talk to them about this), and had good fried chicken like in Louisana, then you won't really know the difference. The gravy for the mashed potatoes and the potatoes themselves were equally "lightly seasonsed". Perhaps there's an older demographic who doesnt care for flavor as much as texture? Although I don't know how they get around the oiliness of the product. All that aside I'm sure locals love it and have their reasons. If you're looking for really good fried chicken there are other places in the south denver/parker/englewood area that are much better. If I'm being really honest here I would place Popeyes ahead of The Castle Cafe for chicken. read more

Wanting something a little different tonight, I decided to give the trout a try. I'd never had trout before, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. Many on here have raved about it, but nobody posted a pic, so I felt it was my responsibility. First, even though it's blackened, the flavor isn't overwhelming, and they understand blackened doesn't mean burned, as the fish seemed to be cooked perfectly. Second, I've determined that trout probably isn't my fish of choice. Nothing at all against this version; it was a nice piece of fish, and were I a trout aficionado, I probably would've loved it. That said, a tad fishier than I tend to typically enjoy. The hollandaise sauce was interesting and did help (cover?) the flavor some. The rice and veggies were a nice compliment. I probably wouldn't crave this dish, but I suppose if I really wanted fish, and didn't have other reasonable options in CR, maybe I'd try it again. Both daughters still love the chicken fried steak, and my wife got the grilled chicken sandwich again. Rolls were much better than the last time we were there. Service was relatively attentive, but the waits for food and in between his visits were longer than usual. It was a Saturday night, and luckily we weren't starving, so we were fine with the more laid back evening. Castle is one of our regular staples, and we'll definitely be back. read more

Nice little place in Castle Rock with good ambiance in the walkable downtown area. Diverse menu of comfort foods with the specialty being pan fried chicken which is a ton of food. Bread is light and homemade, which pairs well with honey. Portions very good sized. We partook in the pulled pork, cafe salad, Reuben and big burger. The salad and burger were well appreciated, with good tastes and nicely presented. Unfortunately the pulled pork was much too smokey, even for those who appreciate that taste, to make it unpalatable. The Reuben was very salty somewhat surprisingly, although the onion rings were light with wonderful mouth feel. It's a solid 3.5 particularly given the attentive service. read more

I've eaten at or had take-out from Castle Cafe 5-6 times since I moved to Castle Rock and I happy to share that every meal and/or visit has been outstanding. The fried chicken is fantastic (although this perfection takes a little while to make it to your table). My favorite is their Chicken Fried Chicken though. The chicken breast is pounded to the perfect depth and fried golden brown, then served with homemade mash and seasonal veggies (including squash). I've had this dish 4 times now and always ALWAYS savor every last morsel. I also recently tried one of their desserts- the banana cream pie - and have found another favorite for my visits to Castle Cafe. Been here several times. It actually has a great atmosphere and decor. Took my wife here for her to try. She got a burger and onion rings everything was good up until when she cut her burger there was a long hair in the burger. Accidents happen but owner came and apologized but then started saying no one in the kitchen did it. Well the guy who brought food had short hair. So someone in back did it. He could have apologized and looked into who apparently doesn't wear hair nets or set up person. I have been searching for a year to find a good old fashioned home cooked Fried Chicken Dinner for my husband since we moved to Colorado a year ago. Tonight I read on a message board about this restaurant. So off we went. Let me start by telling you all-- it is worth the drive. You get a peaceful view of Colorado, then arrive in Downtown Castle Rock. It a great little restaurant. You walk in feeling comfortable. It's a Monday night so I'm not sure, but there was a constant flow of traffic no waiting. No open seats either. They do not take reservations, it's a first come, first serve place. As we sat our waitress Laura was there to greet us with a warm friendly welcome and she guided us thru some questions we had about the Salmon, and of course the Fried Chicken. (It's home cooked, so it takes about thirty minutes to prepare) Homemade bread with honey was brought to the table. (Thumbs up) Drinks brought immediately, as was my husbands salad. (Nice size side salad) Thirty minutes later our dinner's arrived--hot!! And both plates looked amazing. My husband didn't speak for twenty minutes as he was in joyful bliss and admitted that this was the best fried chicken he has had in years. My salmon was perfect. Just the right portions. We both took lunch home for tomorrow. The price?? We both ate for $54. Not a bad price for two meals each. All of the staff that I observed were laughing and chatting with customers and smiling. First-time visit to Castle Cafe! Went for lunch, we ordered two items, the brisket sandwich and a menu special, corn chowder with jalapeños and shrimp. Cut to the chase here: brisket sandwich was pretty good slightly dry by itself but rescued by the tasty Memphis bbq sauce and a topping of Cole slaw! The soup however was disappointing... it tasted good, but there was zero indication of either jalapeños or for that matter any shrimp. We ate late lunch (2pm) so maybe the soup pot had just run out of those two advertised ingredients? ... not sure. We were coming back from camping and were absolutely starving!! This is the place to stop if you are headed back to Denver from Woodland Park! Incredible portions and the most friendly people you have ever encountered! The food was fantastic and the place was incredibly clean!! I ordered the Cobb Salad, which was phenomenal!! My boyfriend got the half chicken (pan fried) which he said was perfect!! Although it takes a half an hour to make the pan fried chicken (they will gladly tell you this, and it is stated in the menu), it is totally worth it!!! Consistently good, with one exception. Two couples for a noon lunch on a Monday. No line / no waiting, lots of tables and booths were available. We were seated immediately and had our drinks moments later. We decided to change tables as it's pretty loud. The table change we moved to worked reasonably well. The waitress gave us time to peruse the menu and our orders were taken. Chili relleno plate, two fried rellenos filled with cheese were nice and crispy and with just a little kick. The sides of rice and beans were described as fine. The chicken fired steak was very good. The steak was of decent size, was moist and tender, and not over whelmed with breading. The mashed potatoes were a little lumpy and just the way I like them. The mixed vegetables were plentiful and good, crispy not overcooked. I wish the entree included the Parker House roll, but that must be only at dinner... Two of the group got the hot turkey plate. It was just okay. Their description was that the turkey tasted like it was "pressed" meat and although the mashed potatoes were good the gravy didn't have any flavor. Would we go back? We finally made it in and we're definitely going back. My son and I shared the pan friend chicken and it was delightful. Husband had the Saturday special which was the Adobe Steak and Relleno and it was one of the best things we've eaten in a long time. Sadly, our daughters chicken fried chicken was not great. We sat next to a family of 6 (father, mother, grandfather and three kids) who disrespected the entire restaurant with the loudest, rowdiest kids we have ever heard or seen. The parents couldn't care less. In fact, they wouldn't even make eye contact with other patrons due to their embarrassment. But, they should have removed themselves and their kids from the restaurant. And, I also blame the management for not noticing (impossible for them not to know) or, rather, doing something about it.
