We ordered our food to go. First off, they were small in portions but big in price. The fried chicken they said takes 30 minutes to cook, failed (and my mouth was watering all the way home). The fried catfish, failed. The mashed potatoes with gravy (if that's what is was) failed. The seasoned vegetables, well they failed to. (See a pattern?) Where was the seasoning? There was absolutely NO FLAVOR whatsoever. We bought 4 dishes and no one in my family enjoyed them and we ended up tossing them all out. We like trying new places, but this was an epic failure. I've eaten at or had take-out from Castle Cafe 5-6 times since I moved to Castle Rock and I happy to share that every meal and/or visit has been outstanding. The fried chicken is fantastic (although this perfection takes a little while to make it to your table). My favorite is their Chicken Fried Chicken though. The chicken breast is pounded to the perfect depth and fried golden brown, then served with homemade mash and seasonal veggies (including squash). I've had this dish 4 times now and always ALWAYS savor every last morsel. I also recently tried one of their desserts- the banana cream pie - and have found another favorite for my visits to Castle Cafe. My husband and I went to this restaurant and for the first time I ordered their chicken pot pie. It was their special today and I must say it was the worst ever. It truly was a bowl of soup filled with peas n some carrots, potatoes and bits of chicken and it had a very thin layer of breading on top. It was horrible. I would never order this again. First-time visit to Castle Cafe! Went for lunch, we ordered two items, the brisket sandwich and a menu special, corn chowder with jalapeños and shrimp. Cut to the chase here: brisket sandwich was pretty good slightly dry by itself but rescued by the tasty Memphis bbq sauce and a topping of Cole slaw! The soup however was disappointing... it tasted good, but there was zero indication of either jalapeños or for that matter any shrimp. We ate late lunch (2pm) so maybe the soup pot had just run out of those two advertised ingredients? ... not sure. I have been searching for a year to find a good old fashioned home cooked Fried Chicken Dinner for my husband since we moved to Colorado a year ago. Tonight I read on a message board about this restaurant. So off we went. Let me start by telling you all-- it is worth the drive. You get a peaceful view of Colorado, then arrive in Downtown Castle Rock. It a great little restaurant. You walk in feeling comfortable. It's a Monday night so I'm not sure, but there was a constant flow of traffic no waiting. No open seats either. They do not take reservations, it's a first come, first serve place. As we sat our waitress Laura was there to greet us with a warm friendly welcome and she guided us thru some questions we had about the Salmon, and of course the Fried Chicken. (It's home cooked, so it takes about thirty minutes to prepare) Homemade bread with honey was brought to the table. (Thumbs up) Drinks brought immediately, as was my husbands salad. (Nice size side salad) Thirty minutes later our dinner's arrived--hot!! And both plates looked amazing. My husband didn't speak for twenty minutes as he was in joyful bliss and admitted that this was the best fried chicken he has had in years. My salmon was perfect. Just the right portions. We both took lunch home for tomorrow. The price?? We both ate for $54. Not a bad price for two meals each. All of the staff that I observed were laughing and chatting with customers and smiling. Consistently good, with one exception. Two couples for a noon lunch on a Monday. No line / no waiting, lots of tables and booths were available. We were seated immediately and had our drinks moments later. We decided to change tables as it's pretty loud. The table change we moved to worked reasonably well. The waitress gave us time to peruse the menu and our orders were taken. Chili relleno plate, two fried rellenos filled with cheese were nice and crispy and with just a little kick. The sides of rice and beans were described as fine. The chicken fired steak was very good. The steak was of decent size, was moist and tender, and not over whelmed with breading. The mashed potatoes were a little lumpy and just the way I like them. The mixed vegetables were plentiful and good, crispy not overcooked. I wish the entree included the Parker House roll, but that must be only at dinner... Two of the group got the hot turkey plate. It was just okay. Their description was that the turkey tasted like it was "pressed" meat and although the mashed potatoes were good the gravy didn't have any flavor. Would we go back? Sure, as the majority of the entrees are very good as we've eaten here many many times. read more

As usual the food and service were great. But, as far as "ambiance" goes, tonight was a disaster. We sat next to a family of 6 (father, mother, grandfather and three kids) who disrespected the entire restaurant with the loudest, rowdiest kids we have ever heard or seen. The parents couldn't care less. In fact, they wouldn't even make eye contact with other patrons due to their embarrassment. But, they should have removed themselves and their kids from the restaurant. And, I also blame the management for not noticing (impossible for them not to know) or, rather, doing something about it. We were coming back from camping and were absolutely starving!! This is the place to stop if you are headed back to Denver from Woodland Park! Incredible portions and the most friendly people you have ever encountered! The food was fantastic and the place was incredibly clean!! I ordered the Cobb Salad, which was phenomenal!! My boyfriend got the half chicken (pan fried) which he said was perfect!! Although it takes a half an hour to make the pan fried chicken (they will gladly tell you this, and it is stated in the menu), it is totally worth it!!! We live about 40 miles away, and this place is worth driving to! They absolutely make the best Ruben I've ever had, and I've had quite a few. My husband & I had been meaning to try this place after hearing about its history on the Halloween walking tour of Castle Rock last year. I love the character of the inside & the staff were extremely nice. For dinner we had the blackberry gimlet, their margarita, pulled pork sandwich & the reuben sandwich. Add the free huge warm and fluffy Parker house rolls & you have a hearty dinner. We absolutely loved everything we had & already want to come back to try more. Very good food, nice atmosphere, seating is spacious and noise level is fairly quiet. They have a full bar I had a Reuben sandwich with a side of cole slaw. Both were tasty. My personal preference is that there wasn't enough sauerkraut to taste in my sandwich, but corned beef was plentiful and very tender. Husband's Cowboy hamburger was also good with crispy-fried onions and a tasty barbecue sauce. His onion rings were the real deal, sliced nice and thick. Why haven't I eaten at Castle Cafe before now?!? We stopped in on a Friday evening and this quaint café with old time ambience was bustling! Staff happily led us to our table and were excited to hear that we were first time visitors and that we'd come to try the the fried chicken. We were glad we did! The fried chicken takes a bit of time to prepare, but it's oh so tasty once you receive it. It's served family style, so an impressive plate of freshly fried and crispy chicken is set in the center of your table, along with a piping hot bowl of mashed potatoes, silky cream gravy, and a colorful dish of sautéed mixed vegetables. Service was excellent, and the food was even better. The fried chicken is just like what your grandma makes in her cast-iron pan for Sunday dinner - Yum! The mashed potatoes have the skin on and are so satisfying especially when topped with the delicious cream gravy. The vegetables were also very tasty as a blend of carrots, squash, zucchini, corn, and likely some other freshness tossed in. We can't wait to return to Castle Café! While we all tried the fried chicken on this first visit, other meals looked wonderful. We look forward to trying the fish and chips.
