We stopped in on a Saturday morning for brunch. The historic building, ambiance and decor was really neat. We liked that the location made for easy walking access to shops along Wilcox which we explored after our meal. Our server was very friendly and she checked on us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed. We opted to try the special of the day which was Huevos Rancheros. It was a large portion and you could tell it was made with fresh ingredients. We were pretty disappointed by the lack of flavor in the green chili though. The shining star of the meal was the complimentary basket of piping hot, fluffy, yeasty rolls that were served with honey and butter. They were delicious and a great way to start the meal. Went last night for their Chicken Pot Pie. It was huge and absolutely delicious it was $17, and well worth it, with veggies, potatoes and chicken as well as lots of wonderful creamy sauce. There was a light crust over the top. Been hearing about the fried chicken at this place and decided to try for lunch. Unfortunately at lunch they not have the pan fried chicken. But they had a chicken fried chicken breast and roast turkey. We got both and wow they weee great! The chicken fried chicken was juicy served with mashed potatoes and Vegis. The Vegis are a bit bland but are fresh not canned. The gravy is a nice cream gravy. The turkey was even more wow! So juicy - while I didn't love the turkey gravy was a bit too thin. I loved the turkey with cranberry sauce and the cream gravy with mashed potatoes. I wish they had the rolls at lunch but they didn't. We ended the meal With apple pie which was fantastic. This was my first visit to Castle Café in downtown Castle Rock, which was a spur of the moment, since the original planned restaurant had a considerable wait list for a Saturday lunch. We walked right in at 11 am to a greeter and were sat immediately. The café is a Bar/Pub style with a limited lunch menu, but service was friendly and efficient. After a review of the menu, and some advice from the server, we both decided on the Brisket Sandwich, which was a great choice with a nice pile of tender roast beef on a toast bun, and mine with a side of crispy onion rings. The whole platter was excellent for lunch. A nice bonus was the warm complimentary bread served while we were waiting for lunch plates, delicious! Overall, I would return for another lunch, as the café was a great place to catch up with a friend and we never felt the rush to eat and leave. Tips for your visit: Downtown Castle Rock can be very busy during the weekends, so plan on extra time for parking, or seek out the public parking structure near the Douglas County Motor Vehicle building. read more

Our second time to this local hot spot and thankfully there was no wait to be seated. We were surprised to find out that they don't have their famous fried chicken on their lunch menu, but you can order it anyway, which was a relief. Unfortunately, they don't start making their 'dangerous' bread rolls until 4pm, so we'll go a bit later next time. Anyway, get the chicken! She said that they had the best fried chicken and best chicken fried steaks and chicken breast in town. She wasn't lying!!! Our server was awesome. She was really on point with everything from drinks to the food! Everything came out very quick, even though they tell you that if you order fried chicken, it's done right, low & slow and will take around 30 minutes. We started off with the Deviled Eggs & the Spinach & Artichoke dip for apps for the table. 2 excellent choices & then for entrees, my wife & I got the Chicken Fried Steal(unbelievably good) with a medley of very fresh vegetables & quite possibly the best mashed potatoes ever!!! The other 3 in our party got the Fried Chicken meals with veggies & unlimited mashed potatoes...the chicken was moist, crunchy & quite possibly the best Fried Chicken I ever had! The pan fried chicken is pretty middling. I love fried chicken and have become pretty well experienced in it particularly southern fried chicken. As pointed out in some 5 star reviews, it is lightly seasoned. And that is a problem for fried chicken. I can't say what style they're using or if they just have their own batter recipe, but its disappointing. This was the second time I had their chicken and I had the same experience the first time. The other disappointment is the chicken itself is flavorless. For a good southern fried chicken you want to have flavor in the chicken itself perhaps by brining. Lastly, the oil. Holy cow the chicken was oily. I could actually taste the oil almost as much and in some cases more that the batter. I do understand people's enthusiasm about a local establishment and that is fair, you want to support local business. The problematic outcome of that is they don't need to try harder or do better. The other consideration is the population of people who are eating it. If you've never been to the south, and I saw one poster who claimed to be from the south but gave it a 5 star comparison (I would love to talk to them about this), and had good fried chicken like in Louisana, then you won't really know the difference. The gravy for the mashed potatoes and the potatoes themselves were equally "lightly seasonsed". Perhaps there's an older demographic who doesnt care for flavor as much as texture? Although I don't know how they get around the oiliness of the product. All that aside I'm sure locals love it and have their reasons. If you're looking for really good fried chicken there are other places in the south denver/parker/englewood area that are much better. If I'm being really honest here I would place Popeyes ahead of The Castle Cafe for chicken. read more

Castle Cafe has a bar/cafe type feel and kind of reminded me about Cheers (Where everybody knows your name). Service was great and our waitress was friendly. The Parkerhouse rolls to start and were warm upon arrival. Green chili soup was perfectly spiced. Patience for the fried chicken as it's cooked to order and so worth it! This place has an historical feel as if at any point you're going to hear cowboy boots walking across the wooden planked floor as a pianist on an upright piano serenades the patrons. That may be the way it was back when Castle Rock was a one horse town (if ever) and the place hasn't lost that frontier ambiance. My wife and I visited this place recently and I had their pulled pork which was only exceeded by my wife's bacon-lettuce-avocado-and tomato (BLaT). Finally made it to Castle Cafe for their fried chicken. There's so much hype in CR about their fried chicken though I got to say it was just okay. I may have set really high expectations given the hype and was let down a bit. We did the meal and paid the extra cost to split (so we each got our own sides). I do appreciate they have that option. The fried chicken batter had a good crispiness, but there wasn't much flavor. Definitely stay away from their mashed potatoes. I'm not sure if it was the gravy that gave it the off-putting taste but for the first time I wasn't willing to take a second bite to find out. The deviled eggs were great, the whites were so cold. It's been a long time coming for us to FINALLY try Castle Cafe. We've passed by this place dozens of times and it's always packed full of people. Even this time around, we were quoted a 30 minute wait. So to remedy this we ate at the bar. It was quite a busy night and we couldn't have asked for a better crowd and bartenders. They were definitely what made our night great. As for the food, we got the infamous Pan Fried Chicken and the Friday night special Fish and Chips. The fried chicken was ginormous, with a side of mash potatoes and veggies. The worst piece for me was the chicken breast. Just my own personal preference. It was tough and dry for my liking. But overall the pan fried chicken was great. Homestyle food at it's finest. Speaking of homestyle, the fresh baked dinner rolls were de-licious. It comes with butter pads and honey. And they gave enough for the two of us even though I was the only one who ordered the chicken. The fish and chips were priced the same as the chicken. But it only came with two small pieces of fish, fries, and a cup of coleslaw. I don't think that was worth the price. It was very mediocre in comparison to the chicken. Came especially to try this fried chicken and it was good as well as the side of mashed potatoes and steamed fresh veggies. I did sample the jalapeño shrimp corn chowder soup but decided to go with chicken noodle instead. Neither soup options were great for me so I'd probably choose a salad as an add on next time. The restaurant has an incredible historic story outlined in the cocktail menu and also seen in the ambiance. Nice little place in Castle Rock with good ambiance in the walkable downtown area. Diverse menu of comfort foods with the specialty being pan fried chicken which is a ton of food. Bread is light and homemade, which pairs well with honey. Portions very good sized. We partook in the pulled pork, cafe salad, Reuben and big burger. The salad and burger were well appreciated, with good tastes and nicely presented. Unfortunately the pulled pork was much too smokey, even for those who appreciate that taste, to make it unpalatable. The Reuben was very salty somewhat surprisingly, although the onion rings were light with wonderful mouth feel. It's a solid 3.5 particularly given the attentive service. read more

OMG..... THE BEST! (I mean THE BEST) pan fried chicken in town. CC is located on the corner off the main drag in Castle Rock. Sometimes they have a wait, but that is because they have the best fried chicken. The dinner is served with mashed potatoes, gravy and rolls. All the sides are served family style which is so homey. It is totally worth the 30 minute wait for this homemade finger lickin' chickin' !!!! Their green chili is also wonderful. My dinner mate ordered the meatloaf and eyed my chicken all night. He would not recommend the meatloaf it was a little lacking in flavor. I know they have other things on the menu, but I never look! Wanting something a little different tonight, I decided to give the trout a try. I'd never had trout before, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. Many on here have raved about it, but nobody posted a pic, so I felt it was my responsibility. First, even though it's blackened, the flavor isn't overwhelming, and they understand blackened doesn't mean burned, as the fish seemed to be cooked perfectly. Second, I've determined that trout probably isn't my fish of choice. Nothing at all against this version; it was a nice piece of fish, and were I a trout aficionado, I probably would've loved it. That said, a tad fishier than I tend to typically enjoy. The hollandaise sauce was interesting and did help (cover?) the flavor some. The rice and veggies were a nice compliment. I probably wouldn't crave this dish, but I suppose if I really wanted fish, and didn't have other reasonable options in CR, maybe I'd try it again. Both daughters still love the chicken fried steak, and my wife got the grilled chicken sandwich again. Rolls were much better than the last time we were there. Service was relatively attentive, but the waits for food and in between his visits were longer than usual. It was a Saturday night, and luckily we weren't starving, so we were fine with the more laid back evening. Castle is one of our regular staples, and we'll definitely be back. read more

Been here several times. It actually has a great atmosphere and decor. Took my wife here for her to try. She got a burger and onion rings everything was good up until when she cut her burger there was a long hair in the burger. Accidents happen but owner came and apologized but then started saying no one in the kitchen did it. Well the guy who brought food had short hair. So someone in back did it. He could have apologized and looked into who apparently doesn't wear hair nets or set up person. But nope somehow it magically came out of kitchen perfect and landed on her plate in the burger. read more
