Small, busy and amazing selection of sweet pastries. We got there at the "right" time - one open table, and there was a large queue that came minutes behind us! The coffee is great, but it's the pastries and desserts that are the highlight. We did get a savoury biscuit/scone - that was ordinary. The rhubarb kouign amann was amazing - the crispy exterior with croissant like, fluffy interior with a great rhubarb filling. The sticky toffee pudding was even better - amazing balance in my opinion, not too sweet - with a great sponge cake to soak up the syrup. Clearly not for every day - but can be an order for every time
1. Cannelé ; Caramelized outside and soft in the middle. On point 2. Dulce de Leche Kouign Amman. Kouign Amman itself was already excellent and when it was filled with dulce de leche it was dreamy 3. Madelene. Very buttely 4. Brioche with egg & bacon. Heated up at home in the oven a bit. Brioche was a little dense for my taste. 5. Almond croissants. Plenty of frangipane inside and what a surprise with a big chunk of chocolate inside. Is it suppoosed to be Pain au Chocolates instead? 6. Chocolate chunk cookie was a bomb. Was so rich & intense
I've had my eye on this spot forever and finally got to try. We tried a variety of desserts to go and the standouts were the kouign amann (this is a MUST) and the basque cheesecake. Prices are also very reasonable for downtown Toronto.
This is a new addition to the positively growing decent dessert scene. After reading about this spot on a foodie forum I decided to make a visit and so impressed I was by the first visit it has resulted into a few repeats. They are on the pricey side IMO. Not all the desserts are worth it. The seating is somewhat limited though I think in summer they might have additional seating outside. The place is clean and one can see into the prep area. Service is functional so far which is fine. Give this place a try if in the area.
We were here on Thursday around 1pm. I was worried about the popular Cannelé might be gone, but thank god, it was there! We got: Cannele Opera Kouign Amann Butter croissant Chunky chocolate cookie Carrot cake Their classic items - Cannele, Kouign Amann, and Butter Croissant were GREAT as always. We were lucky to try new items - Carrot Cake, Opera, and Chunky Chocolate Cookie. I LOVED the Carrot Cake. Today's hit was the Carrot Cake. It is naturally sweet, and the frosting is creamy, sweet with distinct tanginess. It is not sticky like cheap sugar-ridden ones. Exceptional. The Chunky Chocolate Cookie looks heavy - but surprisingly light but full of butter and chocolate flavor. Never had Chunky Choco-chip cookies like this. Loved this. The Opera was a bit disappointing. I wished it had more liquor flavor with more moisture. Not as smooth as I expected. What I like about this place is that they change menu frequently to introduce new items to try. I cannot wait visiting here again!
Castle & Coal located near the intersection of Queen St. W. and Dovercourt is a bake shop with a wide variety of offerings. From croissants to pastries and cake cups, this shop has something for everyone! They also have beverages (coffee and tea) available as well. Pre-orders for their products can be made online or you can drop by their store. There is seating indoors available (mostly bar type seating) for approximately 10-12 customers. I've been to Castle & Coal plenty of times to purchase their baked goods. I've always liked what I picked up. They also have seasonal offerings and some limited dessert items as well depending on the season. The last time I dropped by Castle & Coal was for the duck confit burger. This limited edition burger consists of a brioche bun, spicy tomato chutney, arugula, red onion, duck confit, mild brie, and butter. They had it available on the weekends for preorder only (online). I had my duck confit at the shop. This delicious creation tasted as good as it sounds. The components of the burger worked incredibly well together - a beautiful creation. Definitely filling even though I was super hungry at lunch. Overall, great baked goods in this neighbourhood! Drop by if you get a chance to try their offerings.
Going through a kouign Amann phase and been trying to visit every cafe that offers it. Here is the rhubarb kouign Amann and it was tangy, crispy and sweet. They also rotate the flavours (check their Instagram for details). Also FYI, the kouign Amann are only offered during the weekends.
I've you're ever in this area I highly recommend stopping by castle and coal. The owners Junelle and Aaron care a lot about sending you out the door with something tasty for you to enjoy. They started out small doing deliveries and pop up markets and I'm so happy they're accessible by shop now. Junelle makes amazing pastries, and if i had to recommend anything I'd say get the kouign amann or the cannelé and sticky toffee pudding. For the savory the bodega brioche is delicious. Honestly you can't go wrong with any choice here. There's a bench outside for you to enjoy your treats there. They also collaborate with other local merchants in toronto and sell some of their goodies in their store. Make sure to try out their specials when they have it, I haven't been disappointed yet! Honestly I thought I'd have more photos to share, but I guess I tend to eat before the camera with these lol.
The best sandwich I've ever had was Castle & Coal's duck confit. Devoured it in house while it was hot. A must order if you happen to catch it just after 12:30pm. Add their kouign amanns and canneles to your bill while you're at it. I miss their Queen's Custard - hoping for a return this summer!
Great place for pastries, dessert and coffee. The business owners are lovely people and very passionate about what they do! Everything we've had at Castle & Coal has been delicious. When available, we highly recommend trying the duck sando - its mind blowing. also recommend picking up some cannele, cookies and kouign amanns - staples of the menu.
I saw on Instagram that Castle & Coal have Lemon Meyer Strawberry Tarts with Opalys Crispy Pearls this weekend. They sounded amazing so I picked up a couple ... and they were delish! Thanks, Junelle and Aaron!
Amazing bakery right on Queen St! They have a nice selection of savoury and sweet pastries. They also have some seating to enjoy coffees etc. I was really excited to try this place as I've heard good things. The croissants looked most appealing to me and did not disappoint. They were dense and buttery and literally melted in your mouth. $4 a pop so not the cheapest croissants out there, but definitely delicious and a good treat. I will definitely go back to get more!
Ordered in advance and had this delivered, it was efficient, and was kept informed during the delivery process. Ordered the Meyer lemon tart, carrot cake, galette dessert Fois, and mushroom & cheddar galette. My favourite was the mushroom & cheddar and lemon tart.
Stopped by on the weekend since I was in the area. Grabbed a few items to go, including the popular canelé. Definitely one of the best canelés in the city! The Sausage Roll was a tad too salty for my preference, but it is essentially a whole link wrapped in pastry. The sauce that came with it kind of helped, but overall it was pretty heavy. Very small space with a little bit of seating, but I was just there for grab and go, so wasn't a problem. Right when you walk in, the display case of baked goods right in front of you so you can decide while you walk a few steps to the order/pay area. They also have some fridges and freezers with other food items that you can purchase. The staff are friendly and helpful with recommendations. read more

CANELE (5/5) I enjoyed the canele the most. Canele was super nice. Exterior was perfectly toasted crispy, inside spongy and gooey, honestly tasted like a creme brûlée and that's my favorite dessert of all time. Would definitely go back for a canele. KOUIGN AMANN (3.7/5) Kouign Amann was crisp outside, yet fluffy inside, but it had this bit of taste I couldn't quite put my finger on and didn't enjoy. Maybe it was cardamom or a hint of alcohol. My friend enjoyed it a lot, but not for me. CHOCOLATE CHUNK COOKIE (3/5) Cookie was an interesting 15mm thick cookie with some salt. It was okay, not a huge fan of cakey cookies so would skip this. I wanted a bit more of a crispy texture and was hoping the edges would deliver that. Thought to buy it because it was an interesting shape. Chocolate tasted of nice quality though. read more
My must get baked goods from this place is kouign amann and cannele!!! If you are fan of these two, they're the must try! Best in town. Hard to get cannele.. so i recommend to go early in the morning to get them. My friend and I loved black garlic kouign amann but unfortunately it was seasonal item so no longer offered.. i wish they continued to bake them. The bake shop has both indoor and outdoor tables to seat & eat. Both are well maintained and clean! All employees are friendly and welcoming. Definitely will visit them again if i get chance to go down there. read more

Friendly staff, delicious pastries and tons of variety. I got a dozen caneles for my coworkers who loved them and a also got a Kouign Amann for myself. Well worth the trip if in the Toronto area! read more
Hands down the best cannelé I ever had! Peak caramlization. Not too sweet. The size is on the slightly bigger side and I am glad because it was so tasty! Can't wait to try the blueberry corn cream mille feuille when it comes in season late summer. read more

Love this bakery! Their hot chocolate is one of the best in the city, I have always had something savory here, there had a mushroom galettes and this time I tried their quiche. Oh boy, it delivered, soft, creamy not super eggy* baked to perfection. The staff is very polite and welcoming. I really enjoy sitting by the large widow. Fairly priced for the quality! read more

I'll be the first to admit that I've been known to be influenced by yummy looking food photos on Instagram. I was intrigued to learn that the pastry chef behind this bakery has worked for acclaimed establishment such as Scaramouche, Marcus Wareing, Eleven Madison, Per Se, and Le Bernardin. Having seen multiple drool-worthy pictures popping up on my IG feed of their delicious baked treats over the last few weeks, I finally made my way after work on a Friday afternoon to Castle and Coal, a lovely new bakery located at Queen and Dovercourt. It took me forever to get there because of construction. Be warned that (at the time of my visit) you can't turn North on Davenport from Queen Street due to construction barriers. I was relieved to see that there are a few green P parking spots located in the alley just north of/behind the bakery. I lucked out that at the time of my visit, as they had a pretty much complete selection of their food offerings, including two types of mini brioche, two types of chocolate chip cookies, sticky toffee pudding, lemon meringue tart, chocolate hazelnut tart, and mini carrot cakes. They were also featuring slices of galette des rois, a French pastry cake made with puff-pastry enrobed almond paste, traditionally made in January for Epiphany. They also sell coffee and hot chocolate to enjoy with your desserts. Other treats like granola, dog treats, and t shirts are also available for sale. I purchased a lemon meringue tart, (the last) chocolate hazelnut tart, a pistachio financier, and a slice of the galette des rois. My pastries came out to $30+ which is pricey but truthfully not unexpected for the caliber of baked treats I purchased. A sucker for nice packaging, I appreciated that several of the treats were nestled in a crisp cardboard box with their clean looking Castle and Coal logo on it. The galette des rois was packaged in its own box. As recommended by the staffer who helped me at the shop, I gently warmed up the galette des rois at low temperature in the oven for a few minutes. This helped to bring out the crispness of the puff pastry and take out the chill from the almond filling. Having never had a galette des rois, I wasn't sure what to expect, but if you're like me and love almond filled pastry (like almond croissants), you would likely love the galette. It was buttery, flaky, indulgent and rich. The almond filling was perfectly and ever so slightly sweet, and generous in amount. I was thankful to have been able to try this featured pastry, as I was told it would be C&C's last weekend of offering this particular treat. Next we enjoyed the pecan financier. Compared to other patisseries that make tiny financiers, the size of C&C's financiers is more substantial. It was buttery, a bit chewy, with perfectly crisped up edges, and was full of nutty flavour. Again I really appreciated that it wasn't very sweet. It was love at first bite, and I instantly regretted not having purchased more than one. The lemon meringue tart is quite the sight to behold. It has a slightly regal appearance too, with crownlike peaks of perfectly bruleed meringue and a touch of edible gold leaf. The cookie crust was crunchy, and was a great balance texturally to the tart, bright, creamy texture and flavours of the lemon filling. I have not yet eaten the chocolate hazelnut tart, but it was one of the reasons I came to C&C. I was so happy when I saw that they had one left that had my name all over it! Valrhona dark chocolate cremeux, hazelnut tart base, praline milk chocolate caramel, and hazelnut brittle. What's not to love? If the other treats are any indication of the deliciousness of the treats, I am certain that it also will not disappoint! I would 100% return to Castle & Coal to enjoy more of their delicious treats. I understand that they offer a monthly delivery option on a set weekend of the month, with minimum $30 order, which I may just have to look into. read more

This is the best bakery in the area. If you could only get one thing from here, get the kouign amann. It is one of the best we have ever had; it's comparable to the one from Le Beau, without the huge lines. read more

Came here and got a Kouign Amann. OH MY GOD. HEAVEN!!! So so crispy on the outside, so many layers inside, so much butter, so much amazingness. Bring me back to france! I can't wait to come back and try other things here because this was just divine. You MUST try it! read more
