Not even 1 star really. Told we could sit inside by bar tender, then we got no service at all. We left. Absolutely ridiculous.

I would give it no stars. On Sunday sat inside because the inlaws are in their 80's and 90's and it was a tad to hot for them. I waited 10 mins to just be acknowledged. Went to the bar to ask if the inside area had a server was told 'yes'. Waited another 10 mins again no acknowledgement from the staff. Unfortunately, we had to leave as my father in law has diabetes an he needs to keep his blood sugars even. We went elsewhere. Would not recommend on a nice day if you sit inside. read more

Went for lunch on a Monday. The weather was perfect for sitting outside. Super fast and friendly service. The fried mushrooms are really good. Also ordered lobster rolls, fish n chips, and the Rueben. All was good. There is major construction going on across the river and my toddler was entertained by the big trucks, so that was a win for us. read more

What a fabulous experience! The food was delicious; meaty, tender wings, wonderful crispy fresh homemade chicken tenders: huge fried mushrooms and fresh wedge salad with homemade dressing and plenty of toppings. I love this place! I moved to Dover in March, and this is my new favorite place. The bartenders and locals are very welcoming. Nightly entertainment and karaoke on the river! The location and atmosphere are wonderful if you remember being in Florida on Spring Break! And, like most of us no, we don't really remember. Yeah, it's a dive and has the most surely yet fun help but hey, it's a boathouse people, not a "James Beard Star" joint and they like it that way! Nice spot on the water. We came for a late lunch, so there were only 2-3 couples on the mice sunny deck. My wife loved the music, nice selection and not loud. We had steak and cheese and the jerk chicken sandwich, both were generous and excellent. My wife's margarita was watery but we didn't mention it to the server so I won't ding them for that. Decent beer selection (and $5/pint :) Great out of the way spot for a meal and to watch the river go by, would certainly recommend it. read more

Ok, let's be honest people. This is a local dive bar. This is not the Ritz. People go here for drinks and karaoke, and sometimes food. I honestly have never ordered food here as I have heard mixed reviews and I tend to steer clear. This place is usually a last stop for drinks/karaoke after having gone somewhere else for food (if I'm being honest). As far as for the drinks, they are hit or miss as well. If you get a beer or a shot, you're good. If you get a mixed drink, they do tend to be watered down, bartender dependent of course. The karaoke is super fun, and the location has a lot of parking. This is one of the few places where you can sit by the river and get decent food and drink. I had a beer and the Ruben sandwich with onion rings. The ruben was well enough made, not the best I've ever had, but not bad either. We also had the fish tacos and a chicken wrap. All were good enough. The fries are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The batter on the onion rings was reasonably thin, and I think they were hand made. I'd certainly eat there again. If you are looking for a silver service restaurant this isn't it, but for a bar/restaurant it is better than average. read more

My husband and I found ourselves and three of our four children (8, 5, & 1) here on a beautiful Monday evening after we we found The Farm next door had a 30 minute wait (and ironically a vastly empty dining room). Castaway is snuggled on a one way road on the edge of the Cocheco River. What initially grabbed our attention was the enormous outside patio that overlooked the river. We took a shot at this local restaurant despite some unfavorable Yelp reviews suggesting that it was a dive bar and were pleasantly surprised. We started off with buffalo shrimp and onion rings which were delicious! The onions were huge and thinly battered which made it obvious they were fresh and not the frozen onion rings you find at most other places. For dinner, I had the shrimp platter with asparagus and it was equally as good. Our kids didn't love the kids menu so they ordered off the regular menu and enjoyed their meals. Even our fourth child devoured the take-out we brought home for her when she got home later that night. Castaways is a hidden local gem and the patio on the river is the icing on the cake. (I'm sure I could have come up with a better metaphor but it's late) :) We can't wait to return! read more

Tuesday Night 8.5.14 Dinner....waited 45 minutes to get our food-a burger and Steak Tip Sub. Was it busy ? Not really. NOT ONE person inside - the deck was fairly busy but not too bad. Now I know why! When the food came - it was barely warm - the Steak Tip Sub hardly had any steak tips in it - 4 small bites to be exact ! No apology from the waitress on the slow service...Sam Summer on draft did't taste very fresh -kind of skunky. Guess we will go back to The Farm for better service, fresher beer, and better service next time. And - oh ya, the inside smelled like a cats litter box. read more

I've never been one to post a bad review however, this place was absolutely horrible. We were in New Hampshire from out of state and found this restaurant and had thought it was going to be a decent place for dinner. We could not have been any more wrong. The food was disgusting. I ordered baked haddock with rice, but I'm not sure what I got. The rice was cold and stuck together and the fish was a plain bland piece of "fish", plopped on a dish, cold and definitely not haddock. It was oily and gross. My husband got cold, dry mashed potatoes and fatty steak tips. The waitress placed this slop down, to not return again until we were able to flag her over, 30 minutes later. We don't recommend this place, even for a quick bite. It was awful! read more

Beautiful Saturday afternoon, almost no one out on the deck, we are told "You are NOT allowed to put up the umbrella". That was just the beginning of the rude and sometimes surly service. The food was overpriced, drinks seemed watered down and CLEARLY having a bit of patience with my 23 year old learning disabled daughter was not part of the server's job description. Damn dude. It's been so long since I sent back a dish, I can't even remember doing it. I enjoy having great food, but I'm not a picky eater (just ask my pants!), and I can pretty much enjoy anything. Castaways managed to step over my line in the sand tonight. SB, a friend, and I all went to Castaways tonight knowing that an old friend would be in town. We decided to go early and grab dinner before he arrived so that we could have a little while to talk and hang out without the distraction of eating. I should have known things would go awry when the waitress informed me that the kitchen could not combine fried items with baked items (as in, fried chicken fingers and baked scallops) on the same plate, as everything is prepared together in the same fashion. Ok... so, you can't take chicken fingers out of the fryer and put them on the plate with baked fish or scallops? Odd, but I didn't complain and stated that I would have the chicken fingers baked. The next problem was that they were out of their homemade creamy dill dressing, but they did have a homemade bleu cheese (which actually ended up being the best thing we ate). That was fine, all three of us ordered the side salads anyway. When we were just about finished with our salads, the waitress came over and told us that they were also out of scallops. Sweet, all three of us had ordered scallops as part of our dishes. Sub in haddock, or "native" shrimp, or "fantail" shrimp as needed. Proceed to wait 45 minutes. 45 minutes later (and one apology for the wait from our waitress, who was very nice btw) our food finally arrived. We requested sauces, and three pre-dispensed cups each of cocktail and tartar sauce were brought over. No joke, the cocktail sauce was frozen. Not ice cube frozen, just icy throughout and undippable frozen. I resorted to putting one of my "native" (read: previously frozen popcorn) shrimp in the sauce to try and warm it through. At this point, I'm still trying to enjoy the meal. Moments later, I tasted my sickly pale looking chicken and had finally had enough. I'm a great cook, and I know shitty food when I see it. I've never been served something so terribly prepared in my life. The cook at Castaways clearly takes absolutely no pride in what he does. The chicken had been thrown on a baking sheet with no seasoning at all. Literally no seasoning, not even salt. Upon plating it was sprinkled loosely with dried parsley for presentation. The haddock was overcooked and also completely unseasoned. The "native" shrimp were, as I stated, re-warmed, pre-frozen, pre-cooked popcorn shrimp. SB's "fantail" shrimp were pre-frozen, pre-cooked U35 (denotes "large") shrimp that were un-split, so they were really pretty much cocktail shrimp. Her haddock was not as overcooked as mine, but it was equally flavorless. Same goes for our buddy. There's not much else to say about our experience. We talked to our old friend for about 15 minutes before I was able to flag our waitress down, I told her it was absolutely terrible and that we'd like it removed from the check, and she said "oh, really?" which tells me she's heard it before. She took it off our bill, charged us for side salads and sodas, and we called it a day and went to Christopher's up the street. Tonight's debacle is a real shame because I love the dive-y atmosphere of Castaways. It's not a bad burger place, I had a burger here 3 years ago and it was fine. But the problem is that now I can't even go here for a burger, because I know how little pride they take in preparing their food, and thus it wouldn't surprise me in the least if I learned that they dropped something on the floor and then put it on the plate. As Rodney Dangerfield once said, I've had better food at the ballgame. I advise that you go here for drinks and karaoke only, and eat your meals somewhere close by beforehand. read more

This is a cheap borderline divey bar that is located right on the river. So its a cool place to hangout when the weather is nice. The staff are average and the food is so-so. The best thing other than the location is the drink prices which are nice and low. read more

Has kind of a dive feel but in a charming way. The deck is awesome. The most noteworthy part of my visit was the bartender insisting on calling a cab for one of the patrons that was too intoxicated to drive. He wasn't keen on the idea but she was insistant, restored my faith in humanity a bit. So glad she listened to her gut, she very well could have saved his life. Gotta love the waterfront seating. I've been several times, usually with just one or two friends but sometimes with a larger group. The food has been consistently good, as has been the service on all but the busiest evenings. And Lynn B. is right - there are some seriously talented karaoke regulars on Thursdays; tt's like getting live entertainment at no extra cost. The outdoor bar also seems to get a lot of action. I came here on Oktoberfest, which is an annual event where restaurants provide drink specials and free food samples. My friend ordered the beer on special, a Sam Adams Oktoberfest. The bartender told him, "I think that's...uh...$3.50?" I ordered the same exact drink, seconds later. She told me, "I think that's uh...$4.91?" First of all, that's a totally different price! Second, who charges $4.91 for a drink? Why not $4.50, or $5.00? It seems like she was just making up prices for each individual customer. Very weird. read more

The food was what I expected: tasty, ample and well presented. The prices were good (especially for draught beer). The wait staff was friendly and prompt and we had an enjoyable light lunch. It was a beautiful day and we sat outside and enjoyed the peaceful river view. The one item missing (which is commonly found in so many restaurants that combine the terms "waterfront" and "dining" in the same sentence) was a pretentious atmosphere.
