I really like Dr Kniffen, great doctor. Unfortunately her staff are unorganized and unethical. I tried to make an appointment like I had done the previous year and the previous before that and with the same insurance and the same co-pay. My insurance paid the balance the year before that but for some reason not last year and since I had no knowledge of this I could not ask the insurance why. I was informed that I had a balance due from the previous year. I asked why no one called me or sent me a statement, the person on the other end of the phone said she had. But NO I DID NOT receive a statement. Needless to say I did not make the appointment but asked if Dr Kniffen would call me and I gave my number. It has been 5 months and no one has called me back and still no statement. I do not recommend this place unless you can get past her staff. read more

I went in as a new patient on12/18/17. The eye exam went good and went to select a new frame for the prescription and was told it be a couple of weeks. It was almost 2 weeks so I called on 12/30/17 to see if they may have come in, and was kind of told we'll call you attitude. I waited another 2 weeks and called back on 1/16/18 and left on hold for a few minutes while they checked for my glasses, came back on the line and told they were delayed due to the holidays and they would call me when they arrived! I finally get a call on 1/28/18, a Sunday and they left a message that they were in. I picked them up 1/29/18, 6 weeks later and I asked what was the delay, and told it was due to my insurance, no apology or anything. You know I won't be back! read more

Originally came to Casey Optical because overall they received good ratings. This is an issue of customer service. I bought a pair of bifocal glasses. Went back in about a month because could not see clearly. The tech adjusted the nose pieces and temples and said it should make a difference. He did not check the prescription. Vision still was not clear, just thought it was me not adjusting. During my recent eye exam, my doctor checked the glasses and they were not the correct prescription! I went back to Casey and was told they could not redo the glasses at no cost because it was beyond the 90 day limit for redo. It was the lab, Davis Vision, that had that policy. It is my view if a company makes a mistake, you just correct it. Neither Casey nor Davis would make it right. Even though Casey did not "make" the glasses, I feel their reputation is on the line. The manager was polite and offered a 35% discount to remake the glasses. Did not think that was acceptable since the glasses were never right in the first place. Will shop around for another optical shop. read more

Run away from this optometrist and business as fast and as far away as you can. Kniffen appears hurried and most likely over scheduled. She would not do a complete exam (with dilation) and gave no good reason not to (not that there is one). Prescription is suspect; her equipment looks old and gives different readings than the Dr. Eyewear shop personnel appear to lack the knowledge and information needed to provide proper customer service and advice; Manny is especially lacking in the customer service department. Prices are inflated and they only want to sell you Zeiss products - no matter your insurance. Just plain old bad all the way around. read more

I have been going to Casey Optical for about 4 years now. Dr. Kniffen is the best optometrist I have ever had. I have read the other reviews about price , and I have gone to the other places as well, but they have not been as comprehensive as Dr. Kniffen. It was a Yelp review that brought me to Dr. Kniffen, so I wanted to return the favor in hopes I can help someone else looking for the best eye care. Simply put, my expectations were quite high going to Dr. Kniffen, and she and her staff not only delivered, they surpassed them. Dr. Kniffen was personable, thorough and efficient (proving that one can indeed be all three at the same time). I've never had a better eye exam. Her acumen is truly one of a kind. I knew beforehand that Dr. Kniffen had a particular ability at tricky diagnoses, and sure enough, for the first time in my life I actually received a diagnosis that finally, and fully, explained my eyes and the way they work, both individually and with respect to each other. The diagnosis characterized everything, including stuff I could do with my eyes from the time I was a kid. It turned out that all those vague eye glass prescriptions I had been getting in the past--prescriptions that would soon go unused because my eyes would soon reject them--were unnecessary; that I didn't need eye glasses at all. (And thus explains part of the difference of going to a doctor versus an eye glass pusher at one of the chains.) Intelligent, competent and down-to-earth is how I would describe every person I interacted with at Casey Optical. I was curious about eye glasses from a purely stylistic standpoint, and optician Jim was amazing: within 15 seconds he diagnosed my face, and within a minute after that (two eyeglass selections) he found the perfect pair of glasses both in shape and color. The things were truly transformative. When I called Jim days later to tell him about a frame I had seen online, he told me there'd be no problem fitting that frame with lenses; that he wanted me to be comfortable with my purchase. A note on the concept of going to a doctor and actually...waiting. (Given an ungracious review about the idea.) To go to a doctor and not expect to wait is naïve at best and, frankly, against one's own interest. If you're going to a doctor and not waiting, then it's just about guaranteed that (1) you're the first appointment of the day or (2) you're part of a cold, impersonalized and perfunctory assembly line of incalculably diminished healthcare. As I care about other people, it's significant to me that those in front of as well as after me are receiving the same personalized, excellent attention as I based on their particular healthcare needs, versus an uncaring time clock. Maybe I waited a half-hour before I was ushered in for my first test, but it's not as if the open-feel waiting area didn't have the latest magazines (including one of my favorites, Men's Health, as well as some smart and offbeat titles you won't readily find anywhere). As it was I was barely able to dig into my magazine because I spent most of the time reading the various literature and displays about the latest in eye exam and eye glass technology. That's another thing about Dr. Kniffen: part of why you're getting the best is that you're getting the latest--the latest in cutting-edge technology as well as Dr. Kniffen's own personal currency. It takes constant research, investment, an unfailing sense of optimism, and a duty to one's patients--in other words, integrity--to stay up to date. It's obvious Dr. Kniffen doesn't shirk these tenets of excellence. Perhaps most surprising to me, I didn't have to pay a fortune to take advantage of the particular technology that applied to me. The total cost of my visit to Dr. Kniffen was, in fact, surprisingly modest. As with all good doctors, there's nothing mercenary about Dr. Kniffen, and for that matter her staff. You'll have full access to the tests and correction you actually need--nothing more nor less. In my case, that meant no prescription at all! Dr. Kniffen is truly a find, and I'm grateful to have found her. I can say unequivocally that she, her staff, their facility and equipment represent the best eye care you'll find anywhere. read more

My experience with Casey Optical gave me the impression that the company is disorganized, auspicious and unethical. I came to Casey Optical as a new patient, since I recently moved to Albuquerque, for a routine eye exam covered by my insurance company. When I called to make the appointment I was asked if I wear contacts. I replied that I was, but I was mainly interested in an eye exam to purchase glasses. When I arrived for my appointment the waiting area and the office staff was very busy and chaotic. I heard the doctor ask one of the women to remember to let her know when patients were being checked in. One of the women at the front took my insurance information and had me sign a waiver stating that I was responsible for any costs that my insurance did not cover. This would have been fine, except that Casey Optical failed to inform me that I was scheduled as a "contact patient" and they planned to do a Contact Fitting procedure with me that would NOT be covered by my insurance and would be an out of pocket expense. It was not until the doctor was half way finished with this "contact fitting" procedure that I was aware that this even existed. It was not until this point that I was told I would be charged $70 for the procedure she was in the process of completing. The office staff and doctor were both aware that I was interested in glasses and merely needed an prescription for glasses. The doctor saw the labels from the contacts I have been wearing for over 5 years and had NO complaints about. In fact, with the prescription, I could have (and did) purchase the same contact lenses I have been wearing elsewhere. I only wanted an eye exam. I am bewildered by how I became responsible for a payment of a procedure that I was not informed about nor did I need. I have been in contact with Casey Optical and unfortunately they continue to fail at realizing and correcting their mistake. read more

This was my second experience with Casey Optical and while the first was fine, my second turned bad very quickly. When I set up the appointment for a contact lens eye exam (my first with Casey Optical) I was told that the charge would be $85. That was great. The exam was fine, but when I went to pay my bill, I was told that there was an additional fitting charge of $89 and some change. I was given one charge by the support staff, which I was prepared to pay, and then hit with an additional charge that DOUBLED my fee for the service. The company offers no fee schedule on their website. When a customer is quoted a fee at the time of the appointment, that client has placed a certain amount of trust in the provider. We have no choice, really, but to trust that our providers will be transparent in their business practices. I want to make clear that if the fee for the service had been quoted to me as $175 from the start, there would have been no problem. I'm very disappointed and will look elsewhere for my optical care needs in future. read more
