Eye exams here seem thorough and done by an experienced doctor, using updated technologies. The staff are friendly and helpful. When I was picking a glasses frames, a couple of them spent awhile with me watching me try on my top choices and helping me decide which to get. I was very happy with the ones they suggested that I chose. The store is clean and there are some nice frame options. However, I'm sure other stores have a larger selection and prices are high. I ended up getting my latest glasses online. Still I'll return for eye exams and would like to still buy glasses here to support a small business. read more

Just picking up my Neurolens glasses. WOW!!! Unbelievably good vision. I am used to wearing progressive lenses...have for years. They have an anti reflective coating, UV protection and are impact resistant. I have been using them for a number of weeks. I find myself more comfortable on my computer and when I read. They have a machine which measures everyone for this technology. Designed for people like me who use digital devices all day. You can't buy this technology at a chain store. Extraordinarily nice office. Super clean, spacious and modern. Wide selection of frames. Great to even just visit. The staff is super professional, efficient, and friendly. They all work hard + they stay human. A real joy to interact with them, both in person and on the phone. Dr Kniffen is a superstar. This matters to me a lot; a few years ago my retina tore; i need a follow-up exam every year. MD sent me to Eye Associates, where i got a good retina exam but a poor eyeglasses prescription - Casey Optical was a much better experience - and i set the appointment with them directly without my MD staff making things complicated or the chaos i went through at Eye Associates! And stay away from Stanton! Have heard many horror stories about them from several other people! Stanton has lots of upselling & price gouging + poor customer service! Dr. Kniffen showed me a large photo of my affected eye + the retinal tear and repair. The repair is still intact (which was done with lasers 4 years ago). If it hadn't been, she would have referred me to a retina specialist (or ER). So much easier & more supportive than complicated struggles i've had with MD office to get retina specialist annual checkups. Instead of bureaucracy and obstacles - great care and service at Casey Optical's comfortable office + professionalism. I like Dr Kniffen and will continue to see her for exams, however I won't be purchasing glasses there again. I picked up a new pair of sunglasses only to find the lenses were poorly made and distorted. They agreed to replace them, but informed me that if I had paid for better lenses the issue would not have happened. I upgraded and the new ones are ok. Not a great experience. The bigger issue came about when they broke the temple of my daily glasses while adjusting them. Pamela, the manager, begrudgingly promised to contact the manufacturer to get replacement frames. She never called or communicated with me. It was only after several unreturned calls over two weeks that I was notified that the frames were on order. When I arrived to pick them up Pamela avoided me while she put my lenses in the new frames and had someone else come out and hand them to me without offering to fit them. The frames fit poorly so I took them to the other store, Casey Optical Too, on Menaul. They carefully fitted the frames and were very helpful. I'll be purchasing new frames from them in the future. I really like this optometrist. Dr. Kniffen is marvelous--very personable, friendly, interested in the patient's comfort, and very smart. My daughter has eye phenomena going on and the good Dr. has been terrific about working with her to find the right script for her. She went out on a limb to prescribe something irregular, but welcomed us back for a redo free of charge when it didn't work out. The next script was just right. Two years later we returned and she treated us like she remembered us well and missed us for not coming around more often. It means so much to feel like a memorable, individualized patient. The equipment is shiny and new, the rooms are shiny and clean, staff are shiny and happy, and the general quality of the facility is top-notch. The only reason I give it four-not-five stars is because the selection of non-designer frames is pretty mediocre. I'll have to visit a proper glasses shop to get the goods. Though the prices are easily twice those of Eyemart or some such, I would've paid it to avoid the inconvenience of an extra trip. read more

I have been going to Dr Kniffing for several years now. She is a very good doctor! She is very thorough and very easy to talk too. Her staff has changed over the last few years and I found the current staff very friendly, responsive and competent. I went for my initial appointment and then a follow up the next week and was seen within five or ten minutes of my appointment time. The office is spacious and clean. I called Casey Optical and asked them to verify my vision insurance benefits prior to booking an appointment. The receptionist verified my vision benefits and confirmed that I my eye exam and glasses prescription would be covered, I scheduled the eye exam and planned to pay for my contact prescription out of pocket. Nearly a month later I receive a call from the office saying that I owe $106 for my eye exam, and that it was not in fact covered. My benefits were verified prior to booking the appointment, as well as at the beginning, during, and immediately after the appointment. I don't have an issue with the bill amount, however strongly annoyed by the inaccurate and untimely billing adjustment. read more

I've bounced around a few optometrists in Albuquerque looking for someone who I liked *and* was in-network for Davis Vision. That's proved tricky, but with Casey I think I finally found it. The shop is much nicer on the inside than it looked from the outside... very well kept with a good selection of frames and a helpful receptionist. I was really just there for an exam, though. I was able to get an appointment on pretty short notice and the wait when I arrived was short as well. They offered retina imaging for $50 or so and a visual field test for $25 or so which I opted for since I haven't had either in a long time. The technician got me through that process quickly, they have a very new retinal imaging machine and that was very fast and comfortable. On the downside, they didn't use the air puff type of tonometer but instead one that had to be pressed against the eye and didn't seem to work well on me. It took a while to get a reading. I ended up seeing a different practitioner, not Dr. Kniffen, but to be honest I've forgotten his name. I think he was new to the practice as he seemed a bit unfamiliar with the computer system, but he was friendly and had a new prescription ready for me very quickly. He told me my new prescription was very close to the old one so I shouldn't worry about replacing my current lenses, and I always take not pushing for a sale as a good sign. I think I'll be back for an exam next year, hopefully Casey Optical is a keeper. read more

As a patient of Casey Optical for over 5 years, I think I can say that the quality of service has really taken a dive. Dr. Kniffen herself is a good doctor. Her staff on the other hand appear disorganized and lack communication skills. The low rating comments are about the same: "I ordered glasses and they took way longer to come in than what I was told." It is understandable that orders get behind. The simple way to make that right is to contact the patient and Be Honest, saying the will come in tomorrow three days in a row is extremely unprofessional. Having to call and inquire about something you spent money on is annoying. Spending $200+ on glasses that take almost a month to come in is almost a joke when you can go through and online source for 1/4 of the price, in possibly the same amount of time and so much less frustration. If you are considering becoming a new patient. Do not get glasses or contacts through their office. Get a copy of your prescription and take care of it yourself. read more

I decided to try Casey after stopping by one day to see if they could fix a pair of glasses. They're in my neighborhood. They sat me down promptly with a tech, he looked at the glasses and said he'd give it a shot. The headpiece was broken, so only a temporary fix could be done. He did a good job and didn't charge me. Good business. So, shortly after that, I made an appointment to have a checkup and get a new scrip. Day before the appointment they called to confirm my time and that I'd be there - all good. I showed up 10 minutes early, filled out my paperwork and waited... ...and waited. A half hour after my set appointment I'd still not been called, I went to the desk and asked if there was problem. Was told the "techs had been held up by two other clients who'd gotten some additional imaging tests," but that they'd be "right out" to call me back. Fifteen minutes later, still waiting, no word... So, 45 minutes after my appointment time, I went back to the desk and asked for my paperwork. Without a word they handed it to me, no apology or further explanation for the delay. I left. I'm a busy professional and would never dream of making one of my own clients wait that long, particularly after confirming the original time. If they were that backed up, all they had to do was tell me so when I walked in and ask if I could wait or reschedule, etc. I'd have given them one star, but the second is for taking care of me on the original fix. read more

I went to Casey Optical on the recommendation of my mom, a retired optician, herself. Being that my mom was in the optical industry for a long time, she is very, very picky about her glasses and optician-provided care. She's never recommended anywhere -- but she recommended Casey to me after my previous ophthalmologist misdiagnosed a serious medical condition which could have led to blindness! Beyond that, the glasses were very overpriced there, as I learned after going to Casey. For example, the previous optical shop wanted $750 for some La Font frames that were only $350 at Casey (and if you know what size you need, you can get them online for $179...)!! The ophthalmologist, Dr. Kniffen, was very knowledgeable, thorough and attentive to my special optical needs. She recommended certain lens technologies that would compensate for my lost vision and hopefully improve it going forward. So far, it has helped a TON. My vision now vs. what is was with the previous glasses is so much better. There really are no words to describe it when vision you thought was lost is given back to you with a simple lens technology. The optician staff was also very helpful in recommending styles that worked (and steering me away from styles that did not work) with my face. The staff at the previous shop never did anything other than take my prescription and upsell, upsell, upsell. Last time they even sold me a pair of glasses that did not fit my face and fell off constantly (the 750 frame). Granted, I wanted these glasses because I thought they were pretty, but I wish they would have been honest about the fact that they would never be able to make them fit me! Or offered to order them in my size. All they wanted to do was sell me what they had on-hand for a quick buck. In the end I spent the same amount of money for my glasses, however now I actually have quality of VISION back vs. overpriced frames. Best optician experience I've had by far! Christine took her time with me and made sure I was happy with everything. Apparently I have astigmatism in my left eye and my previous doctors just never told me even though they knew (Christine told me the glasses I was already wearing were corrected for astigmatism.) They also told me I could sample as many different brands of contacts I want (for free) until I find one I'm happy with. They didn't give me a hard time about wanting my PD so I could order contacts and lenses online (I would have happily bought from them if their prices were competitive.) Definitely go here for your eye exams, but look into ordering contacts, frames, and lenses online for the better price. read more

Dr. Kniffen is a fast talker, but smart and approachable. Have your questions ready. They have a nice selection of frames, but have no problem with you bringing in frames from someplace else. They are also not afraid to put lenses into antique frames(Costco refuses). I have always dreamed of having more than one pair of glasses at one time, so I checked out cheaper lens options this year. Are the expensive lenses from Casey Optical really worth the green? I'm not sure. I'm quite pleased with my cheap pair even though they didn't come with a two year warranty like the ones I bought at Casey's. I will have to update my review once I test out the durability. This concept of a 'patient centered, team based approach' is one of the most talked about and hard to achieve concepts in modern medicine - and this is what the team at Casey optical impressed us most with. From the moment we scheduled our appointment, they did everything in an extremely articulate and synchronized manner! We had reminders of our appointments by phone, as we walked in to the clinic, the paperwork was already printed and had most of our details, leaving us little more to do. Dr.Kniffen was very knowledgeable, skillful, friendly and reliable. Jim, who was helping us choose glasses was very helpful, funny and great to work with. They worked with our insurance and tried to save us some money. This is the first time I've had a pleasant experience with an optometrist. Dr. Kniffen was very attentive, friendly, informative, and helpful. I know who I will be going to from now on! The staff was also very helpful, and attentive. I couldn't find a pair of frames I liked there, so I was going to use my current ones and wear a back up at home. However once getting home we found out my back up pair was broken and they promptly helped us in the process of getting back the glasses and prescription to shop for frames elsewhere. I will add that as some parts of ABQ are spaces here weren't always designed with a city in mind, so the area that it's in is a bit hard to find and cramped. The parking lot is like a very strict one line parking area and most spaces have a "reserved for: ", including this business. But just a heads up, it's tight parking. read more

I have been dealing with Casey Optical for a long time. I have never had any problems, I think Rita and the new Doctor are great. The prices are good and the quality of the glasses and lenses are exceptional. I will continue to give my business to Casey's Optical. I call Casey's to check when I am do for another eye examine and they keep good records. I would give them NO stars if I could have that option. I went in asking for silicone temple covers. The RECEPTIONIST took my glasses back to the back. After a long wait she had RIPPED THE TEMPLES OFF of my glasses. I have fibromyalgia and nerve damage in one ear, but I am too blind for contacts. NOBODY talked to me, she just SHOVED the glasses my way, didn't clean them - and there I was - with perfectly RUINED glasses. Nobody offered to put them on and adjust them either. It was the receptionist who RUINED my glasses, not even an "optician"!!!!! The opticians who used to work there used to know their stuff - CLEARLY this is not the case. I have suffered months of agony - and had to buy a NEW PAIR and ANOTHER BETTER OPTICAL shop. So thank you for sending me to a better optician. read more

I really like Dr Kniffen, but be weary of any prices the optical center quotes you. Their computer systems aren't set up to accurately credit your insurance, so they have to figure out your total by hand. I was told one price over the phone and had another price on the invoice attached my order. When I asked about it, I was told both were incorrect and was charged $140 more in person than I was quoted on the phone. Good eye exam, but buy your glasses and contacts elsewhere. read more

I am so pleased by my experience with Casey Optical. Dr. Kniffen, who is a lovely person, explained all the eye exam results to me so clearly and completely. I really appreciated that as it's been a long time since I've had an eye exam. I found the frames I wanted too. So far, so good. Then my new glasses came in and something seemed way off. So they sent them back to be re-made. When they came in again they worked better but they still weren't right. They had the doctor check the prescription again and sent them back again to be re-made. All at no cost to me I might add. The third time was the charm. The prescription is absolutely perfect and I love the new frames. I could not be happier with them. My paper work was ready to go when I arrived, and all of the staff were helpful and friendly. It's a small office that focuses on the customer. Dr. Kniffen did a thorough chart review before hand and discussed all of my concerns with me. She explained everything going on with my eyes in appropriate lay-language and answered all of my questions, and tailored my prescription after a lengthy interview to determine what my needs would be. I fully admit to being a bit of a princess when it comes to fitting glasses, but not once did Rita the optician get impatient with me or minimize my concerns. I really really like Dr. Kniffen, as an eye doctor and as a human being, but...some of the office staff, not so much. There was a problem with the most recent pair of glasses that I bought from them...that was not resolvable. Manny, the guy who sells eyeglasses, was really irritated with me, and rude, and snotty about it all. He was so difficult with me that another customer heard it all and came over to my defense! I had to see Dr. Kniffen again to get her approval for a refund, which they don't like to do for eyeglasses. When I went upfront after seeing her to get my refund, the assistant manager (Cynthia) was not happy that she had to refund me. When she finished that, I told that I still needed to get a pair of glasses and that I would probably be back to try again...she said "DON'T", as in...go somewhere else, so, I guess I will. I feel sad about this, because Dr. Kniffen is a gem, and because she has these people who represent her in her office. She used to have great front office people, and the environment was nice there, but there has been a turnover because her 2 main people retired and she replaced them. Called for an appointment but clerk refused to schedule an appointment unless I gave her my insurance number. I asked if I could schedule the appointment and then call the number in. She refused. I have never had to do this before at any optometrist. Usually you either present the insurance or write a check before you see the doctor. I was very disappointed with this treatment. Worst eye care in Albuquerque! I went to get a new pair of contacts. The Dr. switched me from duets to soft lenses. They took 3 weeks to come in! The first time I tried to put them in the lenses had ripped a hole in the center. Not a tear but a hole. So I requested that they be reordered. I paid about $300 for them as a down payment of some sort. It took another three weeks for them to come in and I was constantly calling and asking if they were ready. When they came in I put them in but I couldn't see a thing! I asked to see the Dr. and they told me she was too busy to see me. They didn't offer to schedule an appointment or anything. At this point 6 weeks for contacts was just crazy and I asked for my records and just left. I filled my eyeglass prescription later at Sandia Vision. I once again could not see out of my prescription from Casey Optical and I was advised to go back for an Rx check. I arrived with my boyfriend (he is a certified ophthalmic technician) and we were told that they would first check to see if the glasses were made using the perscription in the first place, they were. So I asked if the Dr. could do an Rx check for me. The optician Manny denied my request to see the Dr. He said that if I wanted an Rx check I had to pay for it. He said my persciption was filled late and it was my fault I couldn't see. It was a valid persciption and will not expire until November 2017. So it had 4 months before it even expired. I didn't fill it ASAP because I wanted contacts initially not glasses. He spoke over me and wouldn't let me explain. This rudeness prompted my boyfriend to speak up on my behalf and explain that the perscription isn't expired yet and that it may be wrong to begin with because it is very different from my current glasses. The optician was shocked that someone was using comprehensive optometry jargon and was enraged. He began speaking loudly and interrupting saying that next time I should fill it faster and that he'd ask the Dr. if she would do the Rx check and they would call me. I never received a phone call regarding the matter. The optician should be fired for being so rude to customers. Having a screaming match in the lobby over an Rx check is not good business practice. There are much better businesses in Albuquerque who serve their customers and really care about their health and wellbeing. Don't waste your time going here. read more

I was treated as though I was being sold a used car, except they were glasses. First I was completely ignored and told I was wrong (that I didn't know my prescription of the glasses I still have the reciept for). Their machine read my glasses differently. I was told prices of procedures and how competitive their prices are when I asked about what my eyes needed. I am one of those people who cares first about my eye health and second about the cost. I was walked out on, the door to the exam room was left open and the doctor needed to do something else during my appointment. Then the assistant took it upon herself to make me feel like I should stop asking questions. I felt so unheard, my information about my past eye health disregarded, ignored and overall disrespected (especially by the assistant) that I left the office 1/3 of the way through the appointment. My new glasses purchased from them had a lens that didn't fit right. When I expressed my concern about the quality and inconvenience (especially for the extremely high price), they blew me off! When I bought the glasses there I told them I didn't care so much about how they look, but they had to be sturdy. They've broken twice in a year.... when I expressed my concern about them breaking twice in a year after I asked for a sturdy pair, the reply was that the guy that sold them to me didn't work there any more. At no time did anyone even say they were sorry for the trouble or inconvenience. They could have at least offered me a discount on a new pair of glasses (since my first exam and glasses cost me over $400)! I was not called back to the exam room until more than 30 min after my appointment time. I told the optometrist, Dr. Kniffen, about my somewhat complicated vision situation and what kind of glasses I wanted to allow me to see better under certain situations. She told me there were several options but when I asked her to explain them she said let's do the exam first. Exam over she then told me this is what I needed. No discussion of options, no time for questions from me. She seemed in a big hurry. But not in too much of a hurry to recommend several (no doubt) expensive coatings. The selection of frames was uninspiring. And when I picked up the glasses this week I find that they do not meet my needs at all. I will not return. This business seems more interested in making money than meeting patient's needs. read more
