Been a few time and generally enjoyed their extensive menu and creative mocktails/drink selections. It's not common to see Mexican Vegan cuisine, and this place definitely does vegan well. The atmosphere is fairly cozy and casual, it has more of a neighborhood vibe, with all outdoor patio seating. Parking can be limited however and you may have to park on the street. Service was noticeably slow this most recent time around, it wasn't many people dining on a Sunday evening, we saw 1-2 waiters but had to wait quite awhile to place an order. The food was delicious, they start you off with some vegan chicharrons and salsa. I opted for the 8 taco taste of Cascabel sampler which featured all their "meats" which I thought was a solid value order if you have someone to share with. You get 8 tacos with 2 different types of beans, 2 different rice + guac and vegan queso.. which is a good amount of food. I liked/disliked some of the vegan meats and give them credit for their creativity, but would say overall I'm not a big fan of imitation meat personally. It's really a "to each their own" situation. I was also not a fan of vegan queso, but the guac was absolutely delicious. Overall I would say it's not a bad place to checkout if you're a vegan or looking for something different. The prices are a bit high compared to its value and portion sizes for some of the plates, but the experience, presentation, and creativity carries the weight on the scoring here. 3.5/5

El Taco Mixer with Picadillo, Barbacoa, and Pollo en Salsa Verde

Came to Cascabel because I was really excited by the idea of Mexican Vegan food! It wasn't something I had tried before, nor something I've seen elsewhere in Houston (but if you happen to know of other spots, I would love to know!). The restaurant is in what was probably originally someone's house, so it has a very cozy, welcoming feel. In terms of house-like restaurants, this one leans more casual and hole-in-the-wall, rather than dimly-lit and intimate, if you know what I mean. When we came in on a Sunday afternoon, there was also live music playing, which really added to the ambiance. I ordered the Taco Mixer, which came with three tacos (your choice of "meat"), rice, and refried beans. I chose Picadillo (soy), Pollo en Salsa Verde (jackfruit), and Barbacoa (jackfruit) for my tacos. I really loved the Pollo en Salsa Verde and Barbacoa. Though they didn't exactly taste like their namesake, they were still really delicious. I did not really like the Picadillo. Overall, though, I thought the dish was great. It was also huge and very well worth the price. My biggest complaint about this restaurant is that the service is very slow. The food came out pretty quickly after we ordered, but it took a long time for someone to come take our order and for someone to bring the check. We were waiting for quite a while. However, I do not think this entirely diminishes the experience--I would definitely like to come back and try more of their expansive menu!

Great spot for Mexican vegan food! I was in Houston this past weekend visiting with some college girlfriends and we went here since we had a mix of vegetarians and dairy free people in our group of 5 people. The weather was amazing so we could sit outside in their patio. We all enjoyed our food. We were told the mole was spicy but it was actually sweet and we were expecting spicy when we ordered it. It wasn't very crowded when we were there. The server was really nice and took several photos of us. Making Mexican food all vegan is quite an accomplishment!

Very very good, authentic and fully vegan Mexican food in Houston! The chimichanga and steak burritos are deliciousssss! I keep coming back for more :) the horchata and chips and spicy queso are also a fan favorite! The restaurant is small inside but has a large patio for extra seating.

Upon arrival, the parking situation was abysmal; a few lots were in front of the restaurant, but space was limited, and it was extremely close to the road, which could be a safety hazard. Street parking across the restaurant was also an option, but it was inconvenient. While the exterior/patio of Cascabel had a very homey and cozy vibe, I wasn't a fan of the interior and think the seating could use some TLC. The workers were patient when taking our orders and extremely friendly, albeit the service was slow, and we had to flag down the servers a few times. I felt extremely indecisive when looking at the menu. There were several tasty options, and it was nice of them to be transparent about what ingredients were used to make the vegan meats! Ultimately, I ordered the Birria Tacos (which uses Barbacoa) and the Spanish Rice. - Birria Tacos (3.75/5): My first thought when I took a bite was that the tacos tasted like pizza. When I opened the taco, there was more cheese than the vegan Barbacoa (jackfruit). As a result, the pizza taste overpowered the birria soup, which I felt did nothing when I dipped the tacos into it; non-vegan Birria tacos tastes drastically different, so this was an experience, to say the least. Despite my qualms, the tacos were prepared well, and I enjoyed the overall texture! - Spanish Rice (2.5/5): To be candid, I was disappointed when I took a bite. I'm not too familiar with Spanish Rice, but I thought the texture was hard and severely lacking in flavor. The addition of lime and onion, cilantro, etc., did help! - They also served a chicharrones appetizer with three types of salsa, which was fun to eat, and my group enjoyed it as well. Since I love Mexican food, I'd be open to giving Cascabel another try if I'm in the area! But my first time here was a bit lukewarm, and I'd look into their other options next time.

This was my first time trying Vegan Mexican food and it was pretty good! Their chips with queso was honestly one of my favorite dishes despite the simplicity. The vegan cheese was pretty convincing and it had the slightest kick to it which really elevated the dish. I tried their street tacos as well. The pastor was pretty good but I think the barbacoa was just alright. I could tell it was jackfruit immediately. The tamales were a bit on the dry side so I had to use a lot of salsa. The mole enchiladas are good especially if you like potatoes. The quesadilla is a safe option as usual; I got pastor with mine and it was solid. My favorite dish though was the Birria tacos. Super crispy and flavorful. I honestly could not tell it was meatless. The consomé was delicious and honestly paired well with every dish, not just the Birria tacos. Since everything was vegan, I left feeling full in a good way since nothing was too greasy or heavy!

This place is a gem. Outstanding service from Catherine. The food tasty. A great variety of protein choices. To a decent kids menu. I actually ordered off of, because needed a light bite. Great variety of tastes more than enough for both of us. I didn't sample mocktails, because I prefer cocktails but there's a nice offering.. there is street parking. If I go anywhere more than once in this metroplex of approx 7 million it's good we have many choices. I spoiled us with flan to go really yummy

Cute place with decent vegan Mexican food! Came here with a group of friends, and they started us off with some complimentary chips and various salsas to dip. The menu had a large variety of Mexican foods and many different options for protein. I ended up getting the single quesadilla with al pastor and my friends got the tostada plate, birria tacos, and crunchywrap, which I was able to try each one. - Single Quesadilla with al pastor (3.5/5): the quesadilla was packed with the el pastor and was a pretty generous proportion. I thought the flavor was good, but I felt like the quesadilla needed more cheese and was on the saltier side. The side salad that came with it definitely helped balance out the fattiness of the quesadilla, especially, the sour cream dressing which added more dimension to the overall dish. Overall, I found this dish tasty, but it did not really stand out against other quesadillas. - Crunchywrap (4/5): My favorite dish out of the ones we tried. The crunchywrap was thick and juicy and was like an elevated Taco Bell crunch wrap supreme. - Tostada plate (3.8/5): The tostadas were packed with the meat. The flavor was good and I enjoyed the texture. - Birria tacos (3/5): I felt like these were too tomato heavy and not very birria flavored. My friend commented how it tasted like pizza. It was juicy though. Service/ambiance: The vibes here were good, especially in the outdoor seating area. Service was also super nice and they let us sit and talk for hours.

Best vegan Mexican food in the Houston area. Even if you're not vegan, the food is so spectacularly flavorful and hearty, you won't miss out. Their meats including the tinga and barbecue are delicious. We have never had anything we didn't like. Always worth the 40 minute drive for me and my carnivore husband.

I realllllly wanted to love this place BUT it's too inconsistent! Not to mention I've mentioned to Them the moldy vent on the inside that several other customers have referenced in Their reviews but was looked at like I had mold on My face. I try not to take everything personal so if the food is good then I may be able to get past the usual lack of! The service has been 50/50. There's a very nice patio area if You choose to sit outdoors. The first maybe two times I visited it was honestly pleasant but the third, fourth and so on were horrible experiences. I ordered the same thing every time. The birria tacos. They were amazing initially. Then all of a sudden someone decided to put a pound of mozerrella in the tortilla!!!! Why? The flavor or lack thereof from the original experience. Sigh -The cilantro rice is good, but I don't care for the Spanish rice. -The taco platter isn't worth getting especially with so many different concoctions. The jackfruit if like birria style was the most decent if not the chorizo 3/5. I'll pass on the rest! Now, I must admit that They ran a "limited edition" if You will of birria ramen & O M G that was Their BEST thing going it easily 10/10!!!!! The spice, the broth, the FLAVOR!!!!!! I begged Them to keep it even though They forced You to spend $25 as a special it forced You to also get a side option but it was so amazing, I was willing to spend the extra $10 from the side. I digresss :( Even the alcohol has gotten weak!!!! I gave it at least two more tries after the initial visit. This place is not cheap so if You are going to attach high price tags on Your menu at least make sure You are staying consistent. NO MAS!!!!! I usually go to Mo Better Brews or Houston Atlanta Vegan for My vegan fix, but They are not located as close to Me as Cascabel. Plus, I truly enjoy some good Mexican food! Won't be returning :(

Had kosher pescatarian friends visiting and felt Cascabel's menu would fit their dietary needs. We did have to wait a bit for a table (around 115 on a Saturday), but the staff were friendly and kept us informed on ETA while we waited. Food wise, everything was a hit except the vegan queso - hard pass. The potato tostada and soy chorizo tostada are a MUST! the margaritas were also great and the friendly staff gave us a few bags of chicharonnes (sp) to enjoy at home. The converted home makes for a very unique and cool setting and we found parking along the street. We'll be back! read more

Pro-tip: If you like condiments and end up ordering takeout here, ask them to fill up the salsa container all the way. I asked for 2 green salsas with my meal. They gave me this little container, and this is how much they filled up the container, so it's about 1/8th full. Seriously. They weren't always so stingy with the condiments. That's when I realized that maybe I like their salsa more than I like their overpriced food. I'm offended enough to not return after this. Oh well. read more

Located on a side street from Longpoint and hiding behind some trees. This place is such a great place if you want to enjoy Mexican Vegan food! The price is so worth it and the service is wonderful! I wish they were open for breakfast! Every time I'm here I try something different, so I have find a favorite just yet. Today I am having tacos in a lettuce shell and am taking home the flan for a sweet desert snack latter tonight. read more

Hot & New is right. This is a great addition to the neighborhood for Vegans and Non-Vegans alike. To start off la Agua de Horchata is beyond delicious. I was pleasantly surprised, specially because I am big on 2% milk, but I could definitely get on board with their dairy free recipe. Now for the food, I opted to go with the burrito. I couldn't decide on wether I should try the soy based al pastor or chorizo for my protein. Luckily I didn't have to choose, the server suggested I ordered half & half. I didn't bat an eye during my meal, it was one of the best burritos I've had in a very long time. To top it off we ordered the flan. Though tasty, it was a bit heavy and had a particular taste I couldn't wear off. Cascabel is off to a great start, I look forward to the expansion of more menu items in the near future. read more

I was told about this spot by another helper. The food was good but the service not so much. The waitress never came back to check on me after delivering my food. I had to search for her to order. The chef did come and ask about my meal which was nice. I'm not sure if I'll return. I would give 4 stars if not for the service. The restaurant is very small with limited seating. Still snacking on these heaven sent pinwheel fried yummy puffs they gave me when I first sat down. It's about to rain but opted to sit outside. I feel like I've found THAT hidden gem, that spot full of glorious food cooked behind the walls of an older house - turned restaurant. The makeover is inviting and their front porch is relaxing. It reminds me of I visit my mom's house and sit out in the front porch admiring at her lemon trees, drinking a topo chico, shamelessly eating a buttered homemade flour tortilla. I ordered the torta de tingaz The tinga was a slight kick but not too spicy (no runny nose, no reverse whistling - promise). The avocado with the other vegan mixing a were all well balanced; the flavors really complimented eachother. The torta was toasted to perfection! No burned ridges to saw away at the inside of your cheek. Topped it off with a mexican coke but will definitely be back to try their vegan horchata! Cascabel, you have punched a hole in my little black heart and I appreciate your attention to detail, service, and vegan food. See you soon! read more

I was craving Vegan Nachos. After searching high and low, we found, Cascabel. Our waiter was helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. The food was hot and fresh! Vegan Mexican place that is not blend and on point. We had Charrizo nachos and it was so flavorful. And we berry margarita which was gods too. We also tried their platter which had empanadas, queso and guacamole and chips. Overall it was delicious food and amazing customer service. Our server was the best and she checked on us multiple times and even other servers were so fast. Would definitely recommend this place even if you are not vegan do give it a try. read more

I only had tacos and a fresca drink so I can't speak for the whole menu but the place was packed on a Saturday night and there were some non menu items that looked great as the servers brought them to tables. The non-meats had good flavors and I look forward to trying the tortilla soup in the future. I didn't love the tinga but the others were good! Oh... It's BYOB until they get their liquor license so bring your favorite beer or beverage. read more

It doesn't matter if you're vegan or not, this place is definitely worth a try! Great selection of food and drinks, awesome atmosphere and some of the best service I've had in Houston. Shout out to Giselle specifically, she was very knowledgeable on the details of the food and drinks, she has a honest heartfelt perspective on the selections Cascabel offers which helps ensure guests are making the best possible choice before ordering. Huge kudos to her and the rest of the Cascabel staff for providing us with an outstanding experience. 10/10 would recommend and 100/10 will return soon! read more

Super yummy and such a friendly experience!! We ate outside and had a waitress who was great. Had a cold Mexican coke after a long day of work and hanging out with friends. The patio is large and oversized with yard lights and heaters so you can enjoy being outside. I got to try the queso and guacamole - the cheese queso was potato based with a great flavor. Not very creamy-cheesy texture but I really enjoyed the taste. The guac was spot on and really fresh. I had the tortilla soup which was delicious and helped my nose run (to clean me out which I needed). It wasn't overly spicy, but just hot enough to still enjoy. I had a tinga taco which was excellent. Plenty of parking and easy to find. Highly recommend and will definitely be returning!! Will be recommending to my other vegan friends! read more

I've only had the burrito so far but it was delicious! So excited to have this around the corner from my house. Served with complimentary chicharrones. Cute house turned restituant, plenty of outdoor seating to possibly bring your furry friend. Can't wait to try more stuff, baked goods and donuts. More detail, in the burrito I got the jackfruit barbacoa. For non vegans, it doesn't taste like the real deal but the flavor and texture where on point for just being good eats! I loved the fact that it was a soy alternative as I'm so sick of soy personally. I'll be back! read more

It charges a good price for very mediocre food. A common Mexican food dish (burritos) was not even available because a supplier did not deliver tortillas. Outdoor sitting was not well attended nor comfortable. It's 50s outside tonight and there was not sufficient heating. No regular check ins for orders. One waitress was loud talking with the customers sharing the same big table. I discussed the uncomfortable conditions to see if they could re-arrange inside sitting so that we could sit in. I saw empty desks and open sittings. No effort at all! Asked if they could light up an additional heater. Well, the few spare heaters scattered outside were not functional! I am amazed that any restaurant would treat any of their customers with such cold eyes regarding my discomfort and concerns. Another observation for your consideration: One waitress had 80% of her chest exposed and one with 50% belly exposed. read more

I drive 1 whole hr to eat at this establishment and yesterday I got me a $11 burrito and when i sat down to try and enjoy it a roach came out ! A ROACH!!!!! Never in my life has this happened to me I was disgusted and disappointed. What a waste of my time ,money and energy. Do not recommend this place the city needs to come and check this place out because I'm just appalled by that roach in my burrito. read more

This is one of my absolute favorite vegan spots in all of Houston. My friends and I go all the time for their amazing happy hour and tacos. My personal favorite is the Tinga (spicy marinated jackfruit). Their patio is a lot of fun and the staff is always attentive and amazing. If you're thinking about going, JUST GO. read more

This bowl doesn't lie... Absolutely delicious tortilla soup with jackfruit and potato. The location is also cool and quaint with great pics and paintings inside as well as a nice outdoor patio for the warmer Houston days. The location is new so we only tried their soft opening menu, but I'm looking forward to coming back to enjoy the full menu! read more

Great menu with options we can't find at other authentic vegan Mexican spots. The potato based cheese was a welcome choice for my wife who's allergic to tree nuts. They even put the pico on the side. Visited Houston for a couple days, stopped here more than once and I always got A+ service. We were driving around and saw this interesting restaurant. My wife spotted the brand new location and we decided to venture inside. We were greeted by Crystal, who is one of the owners. After a quick chat about the place, we looked over the menu where we settled for the house tacos (Al pastor and Chorizo). I have to say that these vegan Tacos can stand against the regular thing with no problem. Full of color and flavor, the small tacos make a huge impact. This place is outstanding. I ordered via UberEats today and received an incorrect order, but received the utmost respect and highest quality customer service when I called to inquire as to the mix up. Jesus was a delight to speak with- he rectified the situation, delivered my correct order HIMSELF, and included some sweet treats in addition. Having worked in the industry, I understand there is always a chance for something to go wrong. Jesus handled it with grace, offering me the option for delivery of the correct food or a gift certificate. I had never had the opportunity to try this restaurant before so I was quite excited to try it and chose to follow through with re-delivery. I'm so glad I did because, while the kids tostaditas I originally received were yummy, the tostadas de tinga is PHENOMENAL. The beans are so delicious and oh my god the jackfruit is seasoned so perfectly- it's not the unwelcome sweet fruity flavor you usually get when using it as a savory meat-replacer. I found this place quite by accident, looking around Spring Branch on Google Maps. I was intrigued by the name, then surprised to see that it is vegan! In Spring Branch! So, my vegetarian girlfriend and I decided to try it out. We discovered they really just opened (4 wks ago), and have a limited soft opening menu, but what they have is delicious. We had the queso, the tostadas de tinga and Café de Olla. All so good. The restaurant itself is very charming and the outdoor seating area (in a little warmer weather) will be the place to be in Spring Branch soon, I predict. We'll be back, and often! Service was so friendly, food came out quickly. Win. We also had a nice chat with Crystal, one of the owners, who was very helpful and kind telling us more about their (excellent) coffee. I cannot stress this enough. Cascabel is a GEM of a restaurant in Houston. A queer friendly vegan Mexican restaurant? YES THANK YOU! We've come to Cascabel a couple of times and will continue to do so in the future. Every time the service is amazing and the person who greets us at the front every time is so warm and friendly. There is a decent sized patio as well as indoor seating, and if you come on a Saturday night, karaoke will be set up outside (with 2$ tequila shots ). I have been gluten free and dairy free for some time now due to diet sensitivities, and I love coming here because I don't have to worry about hard modifying menu items. This is the only place I can come to and order quesadillas or tamales without worrying about feeling terrible after. Plus they taste amazing! The drinks are a hit as well! My partner usually grabs a jalapeño mezcal margarita while I get the Rumchata, which has vegan horchata, coconut cream, a double shot of Bacardi, and ice . Thank you Cascabel for offering something completely fresh and unique in a restaurant-saturated city like Houston. Fun and extensive menu. This is a great place for vegans and just lovers of great food. Lots of flavor and fun use of ingredients. From vegan Mexican brisket seasoned with hibiscus flowers to soy based vegan barbacoa there is a combination for just about everyone.
