Casba- Great for dancing. Poetry participation... Not so much. We attended the Vocab event. Ms. Januarie York and Theon Lee were the featured artists. I've seen Januarie in the past. I admire her work. Theon Lee left me still talking about his pieces now. They featured an open mic part of the night which was tolerable. There were a few artists I enjoyed. One man who's name I cannot recall left me w a few questions. Overall no complaints about the featured artists. They were dope. Now the set up. Casba You know you only have 3 tables. You didn't do us any favors by moving the chairs to other side of the bar. Like there were far too many people standing and shifting from foot to foot bc they had nowhere to stand. I get it if it is more for your vibe, but it was annoying. I saw a woman in high heels leaning on the way to stand up. There was a larger woman going side to side to be comfortable. My woman who has knee issues complained about the pressure she felt bc she had to stand for close to 2 hrs. Like the public shouldn't have to be uncomfortable to fit your vibe. I'd only ask in the future for a few more chairs. read more

There's something charming about Casba, in the way that it resembles a dirty, basement, frat party. It's almost always dark, loud, crowded, and HOT-- and not like Paris Hilton "That's hot," like "lose 10 pounds of water weight by the end of the night" hot. But somehow, it's so fun! We seldom spend the night in Broad Ripple without stopping by Casba. Everytime I've been there's been a DJ, and the music is usually pretty good-- at least, better than a lot of the bars in the area. Really, my only gripe is with the bar service. Because of the crowd, it's always really difficult to get to either of the bars. And then when you do, the bartenders are not the most attentive or personable people. But even despite that, it always seems like everyone is having a blast, as they dance their asses off. It really is a great atmosphere-- one that you definitely just have to experience for yourself! read more

I have gone to multiple bars in Broadripple now and this one is by far just disgusting. When we first got there I was intrigued as we went down the stairs. I had no idea what the experience was going to be like. As many others before me have said this bar is like walking into an over crowded, disgusting, terrible smelling basement party. I think that had they had more staff or security walking around that it could have been more beneficial for their patrons experience. They need to either switch to plastic cups or make sure they have people diligently cleaning up the spilled drinks and glass that was all over their floor. Of course I think I had the one experience with children while I was there where a group was playing a drinking game and I ended up getting a beer sprayed all over me. I think that if dirty house parties are your kind of thing that this would be sufficient and a fun experience however for a few drinks and a fun, clean time... this would not be the place to go. read more

Casba is a place you only want to visit once a year....I'd say if you go there every weekend then you are definitely unemployed and sleeping on your momma's couch. To reiterate previous reviews - this is comparable to a basement frat party. Floors are sticky, no AC (and if there is it doesn't work as it should), DJ, sweaty bodies, and twerking. Not gonna lie, I had fun, took me back to the more care free days when I didn't have a demanding 9-5. Although, the old lady in me questioned if there was only one way to get out, the same stairs you came down?? Slightly frightening in case of a fire......now on to the outside of this place. Imagine a girl sitting on the ground, a nice friend to comfort her....and she is dry heaving....oh yea and she pukes. I will give props to the door man; they completely cleaned it up in like 5 minutes and a cop shooed her out of the area. Also there are cops everywhere, which I am okay with, but if you want to attempt anything shady, I would advise against it. This place is fun, just be aware what you are getting into ;) read more

I went to Casba for Sunday reggae nights. I swear every time I go there I dance less and less. The DJs don't play for the actual crowd they somehow ignore the crowd standing. Also can we play more than 30 secs of the hits. I really wish they would play songs so the ladies can dance. It is the only place in town so I hope they get better. read more

The only thing I can add to this bevy of reviews on Casba is an elaboration on the awesome Tuesday night vocab events. Ryan says they're hosted by "Ms. Rebelle," but I know her as local poet Tatiana Byrd. She brings in poets and musicians from all over to perform weekly. Last time I attended, a slam poet from New York was delivering imagery-rich rhymes to a silent, dark-shrouded audience. The first Tuesday of the month is always the best turnout for vocab, so make that one your first. Cheap drinks here, too. read more

I visited on a Sunday night when it was quite full. Atmosphere was fun with my friends, but bartender's attitudes were poor. Unbeknownst to me, I walked out and left my card. They charged me a $15 additional tip as per their "policy." I won't be returning. I believe in Karma, however, so my bill + their additional charge is nothing compared to what bad actions will get them. read more

If you want to "rock the casba" into the wee morning hours, this is the place for you! Although I suggested that they play their namesake song on a continuous loop, there's a live DJ spinning tunes instead. A favorite among my frat friends, it was one of our favorite spots back in the day, I can't tell you why ("the pass back"). Dark, dank, dingey, this place is a blast. Typically the last stop on our late night jaunts to the ripple, nothing is better than capping off your night with a few Casba shots and heading home. The place is usually packed and sometimes there is even a line up the stairs. Sunday nights are Reggae nights and they charge cover, though let me tell you there is never a night the Casba is worth cover, in fact outside of 32oz beer night at Peppers I don't really pay cover if I can help it. The great thing about the Casba I guess is that it wears so many different coats throughout the week, but for me it will always be that last stop on the Broad Ripple train and the best spot for a tasty house shot. read more

By far the worst bar anywhere of all time. This place just plain sucks. The bartenders suck at their job and seem to always be in a bad mood. I've got a friend that was kicked out of here on NYE because he didn't tip after previously tipping on his first 3 drinks. On top of that there always seem to be too many people here looking for a fight, but that's expected with a fratty place like this. The only good thing I have to say about this place is Reggae Night is pretty cool, but even that isn't enough to redeem this craphole. read more

Is it just me or does this place remind anyone else of your college basement when you tried to throw a party? Its loud, dark, smokey as hell, and all around unappealing. Why anybody continues to go here after the first visit is beyond me. I've given it two tries now and be equally unimpressed both times. Dear Casba, Let's start at the beginning; I made my trip to Indianapolis to unwind with like minded friends in an intimate and convivial environment. I arrived at the Casba early the night of November 14, 2015. It seemed calm, but as I know from my first wife, looks can be deceiving. I waited in the line to get my hand stamped.What happened next can only be described as a warzone (a warzone with a lot of Twerking LOL). In the refined culture we live in this should by no means take place. The Man in front of me was a monster. I can easily see his bulging biceps barreling out of his Gap stretch t-shirt. He had gave off a tough guy vibe and had a sleazy demeanor. I later found out his name was Pete. Sweet Pete seemed to be fresh into his regularly scheduled Saturday night blowout (I could smell the Jagey on his breath and the smoke on his clothes). Pete, who began telling his sexual conquest from the night before loud enough to make my friends and I feel downright icky. Pete, who couldn't stop giggling as he looked behind at me, stuffing my fat face with a hotdog I just purchased from a vendor. Pete and I went together like water and oil. As I walked into Casaba it is as if the ring girl rang the bell and referee Mills Lane screamed "let's get it on! When I walked downstairs I was pushed in the back, my hotdog/mustard dog went all over my newly purchased Tommy Bahama button down. I battled my way to the dance floor. Bows were being thrown and people were getting rocked and socked. I felt like I was being boxed out by Dennis "The Worm" Rodman. Elbows were flying and people were being as bad as they wanted to be. Pete had pushed his way to the front of the bar and was already ordering fireball. Unwelcome feelings of resentment and jealousy bubbled up inside me. I felt like a real schmuck and was embarrassed in front of my friends (not to mention the hot-tays). This chaotic dance floor had me feeling like I was just pummeled by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. I was in no mood to be battered and bruised, but I sometimes you just have to get your freak on. As I perused the dance floor I felt like Forest Gump. Many sassy girls placed their oversized bags (which had no beeswax being on the dance floor in the first place #unsafe) front of them, making it impossible for me to boogie down with them. I could hear the snickers as I played the air electric guitar. I had mustard all over my shirt and I believe I heard an Asian girl state my haircut was "out of date". Between you, me and the lamppost I could use a trim (J/K! LOL!). Then I saw her, we locked eyes and it was on! She was in the back of the club and had noticed me "making it rain" at the bar. With my confidence up, thanks to an Apple Pucker or seven, I approached her. Only to see she was dancing with Pete. Up to this point I bet you are wondering what Casba has to do with this mess. I danced next to Pete and was quickly sickened by the amount of Axe body spray he was wearing. Pete offered to buy us all drinks and would go on to brag to me about how he has been convicted multiple times and on numerous accounts of public urination (he also kept making fun of my mustard stain). I was very upset at this point and I wanted to just go off on your friendly staff about the companies line policies. (Question to self: Who was I really angry at? The company or me.) I was going to put all of this Tom foolery behind me, after all Kendrick Lamar was playing. I wanted to hand the Disc Jokey my vintage 2002 5Gb iPod to eliminate uneasiness from my body. I had a certain Van Halen album titled 1984 to play at this occasion. The song was "House of Pain," which is what I was living in for three and half hours.. Two things happened in these three hours that will forever haunt me. First of all, due to your "line" and stairs I had mustard all over my brand spanking new Tommy Bahamas Shirt. I am not asking for Casba Incorporated to buy me new threads, but I feel you should take a long look at your line policies.Next, The Whip/Nae came on; you have to understand THIS IS MY JAM! I was getting down and dirty and the ladies were diggin' it. It seemed Sweet Pete didn't know the dance (Pete, ever heard of Youtube). In the middle of the second verse the unthinkable happened. Mr. Pete bagged me in front of God and everybody. I am almost certain your security saw him do it, thye at least saw me heel over and scream. I limped over and told a member of your staff I had been bagged and pointed out Pete. Your staff giggled and thought I was joking. No amount of coupons or cold beers will ever make up for the embarrassment I felt. I feel the security on the dance floor should be increased and your staff should be properly trained if another attack should occur. In closing the assault on the dance floor made my night very uncomfortable. I believe your line system (or lack there of) is more like a bar room brawl. I believe your system needs to be inspected before somebody gets hurt. read more

I used to live in Indianapolis up until 2010 and this place was very good then. I went back yesterday for a reunion with my friends and had a horrible time.. and it was all because of one person- a bartender by the name of Doug. If you want to see a bartender think they are the king of the world because a few ladies are flirting with you, then Doug is the man for you. My fiance decided to go and ask for a glass of water.. what she got instead of water was this man putting his fingers on her lip as if to shut her up. Don't know in what business such behavior is encouraged, but seems like casba management is ok with this sort of nonsense. So the question really is.. should you go there? If you want to be touched inappropriately by a bartender who thinks he is the biggest stud in the world, then absolutely casba is the place for you. If you want to enjoy a few drinks with some friends without being harassed, then this is not your place. read more

Ugh, I've had a few forgotten nights at the Casba. Yes, they do have some great house shots, which is probably why the times I've been there are a little blurry. It's a fun spot, but I have to give it two stars because of it's dark basement location... it really creeps me out and I feel like there's never any fresh air down there. If you're considering going there, my advice is that the Casba is an acquired taste - it is not a terrible place, just not the right place for me! read more

The Casba, famous for its house 'Casba shots' and DJ nights, is located in the basement of the building that houses its sister bar, Usual Suspects. Host to a number of weekly entertainment nights, including the long-standing Reggae Revolution Sundays, hosted by DJs Indiana Jones and Danger (R.I.P. Mpozi). Other nights (Thursdays w/ DJ Topspeed; Vocab Tuesdays, a spoken word poetry night hosted by Ms. Rebelle) round out the schedule that definitely features more of the underground, including hip hop and reggae. This is probably not the place for you if you're looking for a crowded 'hookup' bar where the DJs play the same songs every night. This is more alternative, if you will, and really has some great DJs hosting the nights, as well as a bar staff that is not doing it for the first time. One of the cooler bars to hit as a late night spot for a drink if you want something different, the Casba is a perfect place to take a date for a drink if you're still out past midnight, and want to show him/her that you know a little more than the obvious moves. The Sunday night reggae party has been poppin' at the Casba for over a decade straight, and the nights can be just as fun now as they were in the early days when I started going, before I even knew anyone in this city. I don't make it out as often as I used to, as I'm generally beat by Sunday night, but if you're bored on a Sunday evening and feel like getting out, or, if you're curious to learn more about reggae music, this is highly recommended. I like Casba. I wouldn't say I love it or would go out of my way to go there but if you have a desire to go back to your college days and party in a frat house basement, this bar is for you. The Casba has been a gem of Broad Ripple for a while and definitely has evolved over time. What once was mostly a hipster divey bar is slowly turning into a frat house basement. Not suggesting one is worse or better as everyone still seems to have a good time. As almost all reviews have stated, this is a night ender. Expect friends to ghost dog it (leave without telling you) and prepare to re-taste the "Casba Shots" you pounded when you are throwing up later. Fun to dance and get cheap drinks! read more

Casba has and always will be a special night cap bar in Broad Ripple. I've always found the bartenders friendly. The old doorman doesn't work there anymore (thank God) so I plan on going back much more often. The only reason I can't give this place 5 stars is because they ever hired him in the first place. Super smokey, but I like the DJ Mixes there. I've seen some pretty good DJ's there....it reminds me of a small houses basement in college that I partied at. But there is very little ventilation so if smoke bothers you, stay away. Even Wednesdays are fun here though. read more

This place used to be fun. Now...Appalled in how security handles conflicts. Tonight my friend and I were escorted out because some women (who security knew personally btw) had an issue with us. We do not know why besides the fact that one woman was upset my friend had unknowingly moved her beer bottle over to make room to put her drink down. She then yelled at my friend and proceeded to tell her friends about the conflict. We literally did nothing wrong. My friend and I were then harassed all night by these women. We tried to ignore it and have a good time. Security instead told us we weren't "allowed" to go into one corner of the dance floor because there was "friction" with them. We obliged. After an hour or so, I saw the same women looking in our direction, then heard one of them tell security she "didn't like that girl" and wanted us to go...so they had us removed. They couldn't even tell us what we did wrong, just that they had the right to refuse service to anyone. It was atrocious. They should be ashamed of themselves. As a reputable establishment, the security's job is to maintain safety...so shouldn't they remove the aggressors in conflicts? Here, I saw them play favorites based on personal relationships. No wonder people are always getting hurt outside this club after hours. Smh. Very disappointing. read more

Sad how this really cool bar has gone downhill the last few years. Knew the original owners from Jordan. Very nice people that treated everyone with dignity and respect. If I hadn't of been taken to this bar, I would have probably never knew it was there. It is down in a basement and is hidden by the surrounding bars and the large amount of people standing outside smoking and drunkenly trying to find their friends. After waiting in a line, we finally go downstairs to a large mass of people of all shapes and sizes. Big, muscular guys, scantily clad girls, and everything in between. There were lots of bouncers walking around, which makes me think that fights or violence often breakout here, but that could be me assuming the worst based on the crowd and the staff. Drinks are your normal bar price and it seemed like there would be some dancing going on if the bar wasn't jammed full of people. I dock points for that because it was slightly uncomfortable. They had some TVs, which makes me think that maybe on a weekday it's a different kind of bar, but on the weekend, prepare to get your Jersey Shore attitude on. read more

Not a bad place to start the night. Small but cozy and we've always had great service, even a free Casbah shot for the road.

LOVE THIS BAR! they have recently gone non-smoking (which was the only detractor) so that can put to rest most of the negativity. personally i think the bartenders are top notch. i'm not a regular but i've been there enough for them to know what i like to drink and to have it ready for me at the bar which is a very cool thing. the music they play is definitely way above average compared to the rest of Broad Ripple and their dj nights are the best in town. highly recommended. read more

wow what a horrible experience!!! Whatever you do dont ask whats in the casba shot!! After me and about ten of my friends went to casba i was looking to buy a round of drinks so i ask the bartender what was in the casba shot. He first told me he didnt know. So i asked how could he not know if he was the bartender. he then told me it was a secret. I then asked "well what kind of alcohol is it?" He told me there was probably some vodka. When i asked if it was only vodka he got on his walky talky and they kicked me out?!?! FOr asking what was in their drink?! Horrible service. Let me start this by stating I attend Casba almost on a weekly basis. This past Saturday (8/23/2014) while at the right side bar a disturbance broke out. I am not entirely sure what started this but I do know that what proceeded was uncalled for. I witnessed a bouncer throw a young man to the ground and continue to beat him senseless. As the young man lay on the ground balled up in the fetal position the employee continued to punch him in the head as the other bouncers looked on. This man had stopped being a threat long ago and the use of force up to that point was already excessive. However, it did not end there. The same bouncer finally decided to stop punching the man, pick him up and slam him face first into the stairway railing. After punching him a few more times, somebody finally came from the back and helped removed the man. Afterwards, I witnessed the bouncer and what appeared to be his supervisor laughing about incident. This type of behavior is completely uncalled for, illegal, unethical, and puts patrons at risk. A bouncer's job is not to assault people, it is to keep the patrons safe. If there is a situation, the bouncer should deescalate it. If use of force is needed it should be the minimal amount of force necessary to resolve the situation, PERIOD. People do not become the personal punching bag of the employee(s). In lieu of the situation, I have asked that they fire all parties involved. Any bouncers that were involved in the altercation should be fired, including any of the ones that stood by an watched. Until this happens my friends and I will find another place of business to spend our money. read more
