We were visiting Ithaca, and wanted to grab a quick bite to eat on an early Tuesday evening. We walked around the downtown Commons area near our hotel, and were surprised to find that many restaurants were already closed. We noticed a sign for the Marrakech Pizzeria and Mediterranean Restaurant, and saw patrons going in so we knew it was open. (We noticed signs for Casablanca Pizzeria on the way out; it's the same place). Upon entering, we saw that they offer pizza by the slice, as well as a good assortment of whole pizzas, calzones, cheesesteaks, gyros, and more. Given that their cheesesteak subs were 12", we decided to split a Philly Cheesesteak, which came with fries for $10.99 (if I remember correctly). Food (3.5/5). The cheesesteak featured the steak, onions, green peppers, mushrooms (?), American cheese, and mayonnaise on a hoagie roll. The roll was amazing, tasting fresh and nicely grilled. However, given how large it was, the roll overwhelmed the meat and vegetable fillings. We particularly would've liked for the sub to have more vegetables. The French fries were okay. They arrived hot, with a sufficient but not large quantity and with a lot of small pieces. Overall, we felt that the meal was a good value, especially if you consider that we split the meal and had enough to eat. Service (4/5). We only saw two workers who alternated between taking orders, manning the grills, and bringing the food to the counter for pickup. Our order was a bit slow to come out but we could only blame ourselves because we allowed two sets of patrons to pass us in line as we reviewed the menu. Staff were efficient and neither friendly nor unfriendly. They got the job done. Ambiance. (2/5). This isn't a date night kind of place. There are functional booths, but no real decor. The fountain drink machine wasn't working but you could order canned sodas at the counter. We were able to access water from the aforementioned broken machine. For those confused, the pizzeria and the restaurant that is right on top of the pizzeria on google is the exact same - you can get pizza but there are other options too. I got the lamb and chicken over rice and it also comes with some vegetables (pictured below). Overall, it was a good amount of food and it filled my hungry self up. Cost was around $15-16, which is alright. Something that I'm not a fan of is that drinks are $2.25 each and that there are not water cups. Service was solid - the guy behind counter seemed to be pretty chill. Overall, you get some very solid food for a solid price but you can find better. One good thing is that this place is halal (at least according to my Muslim friends) which I know is important for some people. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS! My asian dad told me they assumed he was homeless and couldn't speak english when he asked if he could have a soda. He told them he has been speaking english his entire life and has lived in Ithaca longer than they have been in business. They then refused him service when he wanted a soda and kicked him out shouting "Get out of here!" I'm disgusted that a business in Ithaca could ever provide service like this. Really unimpressed. Space is cramped, even with just a handful of customers. We tried to order and I was scolded for not being loud enough. We heard them call out our order and went to get it, but it was someone else's. We only found this out because both men behind the counter started yelling at us to wait for them to finish the order before coming up. When we did come up, it wasn't immediately obvious where it was placed because of the way the soda machine blocks the counter. The employees began yelling at us to "Take your food, man!" As I sit here and eat this overly greasy calzone, I am not here to comment on the food. I just picked up my food and I witnessed the absolute rudest interaction I have ever seen from one person to another. For context, I paid in cash and left my change as a tip. Anyways as I was waiting a homeless man who was partially non-verbal came in and was trying to buy a slice. He was obviously in need or help and not functioning at 100%. It does not matter if its because of mental health, drugs, or literally anything because he was doing his best and not rude at all. As soon as he came to the counter the staff was already annoyed. He tried to give them $2 for a slice. They kept saying that its "$2.50, its $2.50, you need more man." (Which is lame enough because just help the guy out). He stepped away to go through his bag and try and find some more money. I walked over to the counter and handed them a dollar so he could get a slice. The guy tried to give me the change back and I told him to give it to the guy with his slice. And the employee looked me in the eyes and put it in the restaurants tip jar. That is absolutely unacceptable. To make things worse shortly after the man left and a college student came in. The college student said to the employees something about him being weird/annoying/ect and they all laughed. i just can't imagine being so vile to someone who needs a little help, and the denying him the help that someone else was trying to give them. I first came here about two months ago when I moved to Ithaca and after I would probably say I have been here 5 more times and I had take out from here twice. Honestly I'm not sure why so much negative reviews for this place. I actually love eating here. When you first walk in it looks a little run down, the guys working look like they are in the mob. You know things look a little sketchy ... But talking to the guys and owner you would come to find out these are hard working guys. Very nice and great customer service. I have always felt welcome when I come here.. The food is really good ... If you give it a try you would see.. This is actually my TOP FAV pizza place in ithaca ... The pizza is typical pizza you would get if you walk into a pizza shop in the Bronx ... It's rather good .. The calzone is okay I mean the first time and last time I had one was in Italy so you can't really compare lol but it was decent, really big enough for two people unless your really hungry. So I'm going to put it out there and say this isn't the kind of place I would really take someone for lunch...or, well, readily admit to going to myself. This is Yelp though, so I'll put my thoughts out there. The reality is that it's not the most, uh, appetizing place. It's not especially clean, the pizzas don't always look especially good, and the seating tends to be wobbly or be covered in crumbs. Oh, and the flies...I've seen so, so many flies. That said, I worked a block from the Commons for some time and I could easily wander over here for lunch with coworkers or something when we needed a quick bite. The guys who work in the place have always been super welcoming, but they definitely don't seem to put a lot of effort into keeping the place clean. If you're looking for fresh food, this is not the place for you. This is the place for you if you need something to eat and you're already down on, or near, the Commons. It's a place of convenience that happens to have a tasty thing or two on the menu (though I've tried various things, I usually order the gyro...which is fine, but not anything more than that), or you can get a couple slices of pizza when you're in need of a quick bite. read more

I had a broccoli and chicken pizza with white sauce that was very bland. I liked the crunch of the flat pizza crust but the chicken was shriveled up, chewy and dry. It may have been old leftover pieces of gyro meat. I am unsure. I had to remove the chicken halfway through my pizza because it was so rubbery. It looked like more like fried pork rinds than chicken. I think that the slice I chose was probably the oldest slice on display because it was sitting by itself. I probably should have ordered a fresher-looking slice but I really wanted broccoli. The pros of this place is that the inside looks pretty clean, they have tons of food options (burgers, gyros, pizza, sandwiches, fries, chicken wings, garlc knots etc.) & they open until 2AM. It is a great place for quick food or late night munchies. It was cold inside when I was there because they left the front door open. The BF got a double patty cheeseburger with American cheese and a side of fries. His meal was definitely better than the pizza. I would have given this place a 1-2 stars for the pizza but the fries made up for my pizza experience. Another pro is the quick and friendly service. They advertise themselves as the best pizza in the commons, and I don't think it's a crazy claim to make. Obviously, that title depends on your taste and pizza preferences, but I think it fits. They make thin-crust pizza that is, in my experience, oven-baked with a more that average level of crispiness. Not burned, but not soft or greasy or doughy. Their slices aren't by any means dry or stale,but find a sweet spot. I haven't tried anything but the pizza, but it was good enough for a second round. A friend recommends the buffalo chicken as well. They definitely have a local, welcoming feel. You don't feel out of place here. They're friendly. Some good slice + soda deals for $5-6. Slices with a side of staple. I went and picked up some pizza to go for my boyfriend and I. Halfway through one slice, my boyfriend found a staple, with his mouth. I hope I don't have to stress how dangerous a staple could have been if ingested, and he is lucky that he didn't cut his mouth or swallow it. I immediately called Casablanca to let them know, and while the people I interacted with seemed nice, their manager never returned my call, and I don't think there is much that they can do to retain my business after this incident. When I first called, the person working the phone line was apologetic, took my information, and said the manager would call me. 30 minutes later, I got a call from a delivery person saying he had a pizza for me. I was confused. We hadn't ordered a new pizza and didn't want one. I ended up feeling bad for the delivery person,who at first thought this was a normal delivery and didn't understand why it was being refused. I called Casablanca back and spoke to the same guy I spoke to originally telling him I refused delivery. He relayed a message to me from the manager apologizing and offering a 20% discount. He also let me know they had thrown away the remainder of the pie that my slice had come from. I recognize that there isn't much that they can do other than what they did. They tried to make amends. But I would have appreciated a call from the manager rather than a surprise pizza delivery. The only reason I came here is because it's directly across the street from my friend's apartment in the Commons. We were having a group dinner but we were waiting for some other friends to finish cooking, which would take at least another hour or so, and I was starving so I decided to run downstairs and get something quick that wouldn't fill me up. You see the typical pizza options here in their display. Pizza quality here is lower than what you can get in other places around Ithaca. It's marginally cheaper per slice here, but the extra quarters elsewhere are worth it. The place itself is just disgusting. They have so many flies just hanging around inside their pizza display case, and they make no effort to do anything about it. Great music. Great staff. Good food. Place has nice small atmosphere. It fits in well with the area. The staff was very kind to me and even though they charge for refills, let me have mine for free. Don't know why, they just seemed genuinely kind. Food was good. I always love me a calzone but they have a WIDE selection of calzones and Stromboli that aren't OMG great, but very good. Inexpensive tasty pizza, friendly folks. The falafel was yummy, on the spicy side, good tzatziki sauce, fresh pita. Served with fries which they claim are the "best in Ithaca". They were fresh & hot, however, they are the crispy coated batter kind - not my thing. Wish there were cucumbers on the pita. They don't honor their menus pricing or discounts on it. Prices are inconsistent then what you see in store vs the menu. Got told I had an old menu but it was the same exact menu sitting on their counter that they were giving out so essentially false advertisement. The kid I dealt with was a nice guy and very friendly. The gyro plate was overpriced for how small it was and how bland. Oasis Grill in Collegetown is better and cheaper. The service was awful. My friend, standing right behind me, got passed over for ordering a few times before speaking up and then was chastised for asking.
