Weird review. This covers my only 2 visits. Our 1st time was our son's college orientation. Our 2nd time was when we moved him into the dorms. Visit 1: We (4 people) sat at the bar. Margaritas were delicious, food was great, and we left raving about the place. We told everyone to go and how great it was. Visit 2: We (this time 6 adults) we're so excited we made sure to call in a reservation and brought along another couple because they heard us raving! However it couldn't be any more opposite than the 1st. We were sat at 7pm to a 1/2 full restaurant. We sat for nearly 15-18min before a server came over. Once they arrived, the young man seemed annoyed to be there. I get that people sometimes have bad nights, but it was uncomfortable feeling he didn't want to be our server? Weird. We ordered some apps and pitcher of margarita for 5 and 1 cocktail. 15 min later... pitcher arrived. Another 15 min the apps arrive... cocktail, nope. So far it's been 45-50 min since we sat arrived! Our server disappeared, literally was not on the floor. I eventually flagged down another server and asked if she could find our server. Her shows back up another 5 min later and I asked about my cocktail. "Oh, yeah, I don't think I put that in?" He says? WTF! So another 10 min I finally get my cocktail. Then he disappears again for 15-20 min. So now we're almost 90 min and 1 order of drinks and dude is gone! Next time he is out, we flag him down and ask if he can take our dinner order. He says, "Oh, I forgot that I didn't take your order." Again, WTF. Finally order... food arrives. And to make this long review short, he disappears again. Can't order more drinks, can't get water refilled, and it's over 2hrs and we want to pay bill. Finally someone walks to bar and asks for our bill. Guy apologizes and says he'll comp check. Server dude comes back again and can't figure out how to use the POS system. Apologies from manager , blames POS system, we pay and can't get out of there fast enough. Over 2 hours of being ignored has nothing to do with POS. Sadly, I'm not sure I'll go again and our kid just started freshman year at OU! read more

My favorite restaurant when I was in college at Ohio University. I did not discover the magic of this place until my junior year. Casa serves up some the freshest food and uses locally sourced ingredients. My favorite meal here is the chimichanga. You can only order it after 5 p.m. The BEST chimichanga I have ever had. It is deep fried to perfect, not overly deep fried either- just right. You can choose your fillings. I always do a protein and some veggies, but it comes with cheese and beans inside of it as well. Other items I like to order is the queso and their wide variety of salsas. My favorite one is the barbecue salsa. It is the perfect sweet and tangy mix! Prepare to wait for a table on a busy night (or even morning- they serve breakfast to). They do not take reservations, but you can order a snack in the bodega area while you wait. This is also a non-tipping establishment. They believe in paying their employees a fair wage and will not accept tips. Casa and Athens.. Now, this is a local restaurant that sources local and supports local farms and businesses, therefore, please know that at times their menu changes and new items come and go. I ate a chicken filled chimichanga with onions, black beans, and bell peppers topped with salsa and a side of guacamole and sour cream to pair. It was absolutely fantastic! Went here for dinner as it used to be one of my favorites. Service was good, the seating hostess was super friendly. The food took forever, probably :45 or more and we were all really hungry, When our food came the guy asked if we wanted sour cream and then must have forgotten. After having eaten a quarter of our meal someone else brought the sour cream after we asked. I wouldn't have even written the review but they charged us $3 for two little things of sour cream that came late and then didn't really say much except sorry when we asked when our food was coming, I get that places get backed up but this way beyond what should be normally expected. Casa Nueva is an Athens staple known for its margaritas and Mexican food. They also have a great selection of draft beers. The restaurant side has always been too busy for me to get into but I've enjoyed many a delicious quesadilla in the bar area. They are great and there's a choice of different sauces, including black bean, red chili and roasted garlic, chipotle and house mild. I really do recommend the house margaritas, and my daughter swears by the other cocktails. Casa Nueva pays a fair wage so the staff discourages tips. read more

The restaurant is cozy with lots of different seating options as well as a large bar. They have vegetarian and vegan options as well. From what I could tell from flyers around the bar, they seem to always have some form of live entertainment in the evenings. I love them extra because they are a worker-owned co-op and actively frame sustainability as a key point in their business. I am madly in love with the food and freshness. Had an excellent Athens mule drink - fresh lime juice, OYO vodka, Ginger infused vodka and grand spumante. Great gazpacho bloody mary as well. It subs in red wine vinegar for the classic Worcestershire sauce. LOVE the tofu albondigas, love the jasmine rice. How often is rice just downright tasty? The soysage and biscuits are my go-to, and my to-go. I get a box whenever I head home - so tasty as leftovers! Fresh salsas are always worth trying. read more

Vegans rejoice! There is great vegan food in the crazy college town of Athens Ohio. Casa Nueva is tucked quaintly in the downtown area but not difficult to access. The interior decor is standard college town bar/restaurant fare but don't let that deter you from eating here. Courtney was our server and a better server you will not find. Professional, knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. We started with Blood Mary's from the bar. The glasses were small but the taste was spot on. For the appetizer we had the tofu fries. Crispy on the outside and moist on the inside with a tasty soy mayo dip to compliment them. For lunch we had the Vegan burrito and a tortilla dish called the Hills Deluxe. Overly abundant portions and amazing flavors from both. We couldn't finish the burrito so decided to take the remainder of it, and our dessert a vegan brownie, to go. Suffice to say the brownie didn't last long while we were driving. The menu says they try to source most of their items locally and it shows with the freshness of the dishes. It is refreshing to find such a fantastic, vegan friendly restaurant around Ohio University. If you are ever traveling to or through the area it would benefit you to stop here and have a bite to eat. Not a big fan. We waited a good while for our food to come, which is understandable.. but when the food arrived my party was pretty disappointed to say the least. One member of my party got the biscuits and gravy (half) and even though it was the half option I expected more than the top sliver of a biscuit and scoop of sad looking gravy. This is a staple restaurant in Athens. Definitely one of the favorites of Athens residents. I have been here 2 times and got he huevos rancheros both times. They are really good. I love how you can customize them to your taste. The home fries are great too. Get the bacon!! OMG. I would come back here just for the bacon it was so amazing. Sometimes I make bacon at home and get sad because it's not Casa bacon. That's how good it is. The Bloody Mary I ordered was not good and I would not recommend it. Watered down, tasteless with old-ish celery and olives. Don't bother. Service is ok, kind of slow. I think part of the reason for this is that most of the waitresses know the patrons and spend time talking to their tables. So I guess that's both good and bad. read more

I ordered the #7 meal which is 2 enchiladas filled with cheese (one also is stuffed with veggies of the day) and then topped with 2 different salsas, chipotle and verde. Then there is a side of beans and rice. The cheese inside the enchiladas was amazing, not too much cheese that it ruined the dish. And then the beans and rice taste super healthy and fresh. They aren't gooey and covered in cheese sauce like some Mexican places. Been here twice already and plan to go back again! 5 stars always! Great food, great atmosphere and a great vibe! The total time I waited (for a table to getting my food) was 2 hours. Even though the Breakfast burrito I ordered was good, it wasn't worth 2 hours. Their Breakfast burrito is unique because it's baked into what looks more like a square pillow so the tortilla becomes crusty until your fork breaks through and a steamy Mexican vapor escapes. I topped it with their medium salsa which tasted fresh but dried up quickly on the burrito's hot surface. The side of crispy potatoes were excellent. Athens wasn't a place I had been before and I was pretty much wilting from hunger at 9 pm. My boyfriend and I ended up here largely due to the late hours. That's what a college town should be like. Late night vegan food! I was impressed by the size of the place. It's sort of three stores all linked together. The hostess was super hip in her high waisted pants and our server was sweet and kind. The place was bright even so late at night on the food side. No mood lighting to be seen. I've never had Mexican food with vegan cheese and they make their own, so I was pretty excited about that, too. I ordered enchiladas with vegan cheese. They're made with peanut tofu. My boyfriend asked if that made it taste different. Maybe I was ravenous or I just didn't notice but I didn't think so. Squash and something were the vegetables of the day, so I was into having squash in an enchilada. When it came out the enchiladas were stacked and I had to ask my boyfriend if this the was correct food I should be eating. I had read stacked but it looked sort of like pancakes. My enchilada food skills are lacking. The food was fantastic! I'd consider going spicier if I had it again, but the overall feeling of full happiness from the cheese and vegetables and tofu was wonderful. My boyfriend had tacos. He put them on a scale of "ok," I think. He said he'd try something else if we ended up there again. I probably would, too, but not because what I had was bad. We both had dessert. He had a brownie. I think he said that was also, "ok." I had a vegan chocolate pie. It was pudding in a crust that we decided was sort of like a stale pop tart. That sounds bad but we agreed it wasn't. I probably wouldn't buy it again, but if someone gave it to me, I'd eat it. The cool thing about this place is that it's owned by a bunch of the employees and they donate what you tip, should you choose to tip, to their monthly charity. The charity rotates. You can ask what it is for the month. It seemed to me like everyone there was working hard to do their jobs and that's such a cool idea, it's worth trying the place out just to support it. Excellent food. Service was very slow. We waited more than 30 minutes for our meal after we ordered. Server seemed indifferent. This is not a place to bring kids that are hungry. Special order for a simple chicken on a bed of lettuce seemed beyond them. read more

Casa Nueva (just Casa to the locals) is my favorite restaurant in Athens. I was a student that did was not huge into the party scene and appreciated the half student/half townie atmosphere. The drinks are excellent and the build your own quesadillas are to die for. Ingredients are locally sourced and management brings in local artwork for sale on the walls. There is a great stage for bands/open mic nights. The restaurant is separated into two sides, a traditional restaurant side with servers and the Bodega side where you seat yourself and order at the bar. Casa is a "no tip" business and any accidental tips are given to charity. My order recommendation is: BYO Quesadilla with chicken and the veggies of the day (comes with cheese) with black bean salsa. read more
