Today is May 1 that's my birthday 79 years old and my oldest grandchild is graduating from Ohio university tomorrow so we drove here to Athens, Ohio from Frankfurt, Illinois, where we live, and my son came for the graduation also, and we were taken for my birthday to the purple Chapstick, which I've never heard of never been to what was delighted by both the delightful decorating place is really cute and Anna, our waitress made the day perfect and they had great food and a great dessert we ordered an appetizer of chips and they were good and salty and came with some salsa and then my wife and I shared a wheat potato pasta with which came with lots of vegetables and First. We have a dinner salad. He had a savory dressing and I had a strawberry vinaigrette dressing and then we cheered a piece of their wonderful chocolate cake and they poured me a cup of coffee. Everything was terrific. I highly recommend this place and you can see a picture of my wife standing in the doorway of their little private room. read more

A solid restaurant. All the food I ordered was good. I especially liked the Tom Yum soup. This restaurant is a little pricey. Nothing was "wow" but all was very good. I couldn't pick a favorite entree. We ordered Daisy Stir Fry, Sweet Potato Peanut Pasta, and Seafood Alfredo. You can bring your own alcohol (they don't serve any). What an asset to the Athens community this is. With a liquor license, it would be 5 stars but it's BYOB. That is fine if you are forewarned (now you are) and prepare accordingly. Purple Chopstix is very unique and its food is a testament to that. The menu is different each time I go, which is fun and allows me to try new foods. The staff are so sweet and helpful when asked about the menu and recommendations. The food itself is good, although it seems to take a while to make. Also, please be aware that this restaurant is BYOB!! Great food and wonderful service. I have Celiac's disease and have a tough time eating out without having problems with gluten issues. They are very careful and safely prepare my food when I tell my server I am gluten free and can not have have cross contamination. I have never gotten cross contaminated here. read more

We had the Seafood Crepes and the Creamy Garlic Tuscan Salmon and they were both excellent. The 3 of us had 3 different desserts, Lemon Poppyseed Cake, Key Lime Pie and Chocolate Cake, and they were all so yummy. First off I have to say that I'm compelled to give this place a 1 star, but only for purely selfish reasons. We were informed that they mostly take reservations but they were more to happy to go ahead and seat us...reminder this was 10 minutes before closing. The decor of the restaurant was very eclectic and inviting, a place you'd want to hang out in while enjoying a good bottle of The young lady that seated us was more than friendly as she explained to us this was a BYOB/wine location and showed us around the menu as it was obvious we were newbies. I ordered the Tom Yum Soup followed by the Red Thai Coconut. Words cannot express the flavor explosion that awaited me, the perfect blend of flavors/spices was out of this world. Literally after every bite I let out an involuntary "mmm". Even though I was completely full after barely finishing every last bite, I had to try a piece of the in-house made cake. Luckily the 3 of us ate it due to the large slice. I don't care if you have no room left after your meal, you MUST eat the desert! Even though we were there way after closing, the staff made no effort at all to hurry us on our way. I even saw other seated after closing. It's rare to have such rude service in a small town. We did not have a reservation, which was apparently a big problem. Our hostess gave us attitude about that, and then after she seated us, our waitress said, "Oh, is this your first time here? Well the first thing you should know is that we recommend reservations. I see you at least knew that we are BYOB..." When we asked if she could put our champagne in the fridge for a while, we got a rude smirk and a, "Uhhh, sure." The waitress never made eye contact after that, and they ensured we felt unwelcome the entire meal. I wish they'd just told us there were no tables. The food was decent. The peanut sauce pasta was great, the salads were good. The crostini appetizer was offensively bad. The bread was cheap store-bought bread, not even toasted, with frozen corn and microwaved mozzarella on it. We won't be back. I'm not sure how we managed to offend them upon arrival, but the food didn't even make up for the rude service. This place isn't what it used to be. For these prices, good service should be required. read more

I finally went to this restaurant yesterday after having heard good things about it for months. I'm a sucker for Sunday brunch, and once I found out they had it there I knew I had to try it. While it seemed a bit steep at $15 (all inclusive), it wound up being worth every penny. The food was AWESOME. Gigantic omelets stuffed to the gills with the tastiest ingredients, fresh deluxe salads with homemade salad dressings, french toast with REAL maple syrup, wontons, samosas, fresh made from scratch biscuits with delicious sausage gravy (that was actually soysage! had no idea), extremely tasty yogurt with fresh blueberries and granola if you wanted it, cut fruit, shrimp, marinated veggies, vegetarian sushi, quality coffee with real dairy to put in it--let's just say it was hard to leave. The cheesecake for dessert was pretty good, too. The icing on the cake was the decor within. Passionworks is a local artist studio that assists developmentally challenged artists in creating and selling their work, and it appears that the owner of Purple Chopstix is a big supporter. The colors burst from every corner. Even the bathroom is beautifully decorated. Purple Chopstix has the feel of a family friend's cozy living room and I could sit there and eat and converse for hours, literally. I will be returning as soon as I can. Take note that brunch on Sundays starts at 11am and they seat until 1pm, and weekday hours are 5-8pm. read more

This place is awesome! The brunch is truly unlike anything you've seen before. It's an eclectic mix of Indian, thai, chinese, greek, you name it. It's served in a potluck style, with the best part being that you don't have to bring anything =P My favorite was the deviled eggs, which were perfectly seasoned. There isn't a set brunch menu, so you're in for a surprise on any given Sunday. My friend and I were visiting athens and this was a recommended place to visit. We were not disappointed. One of my favorite restaurants in town! It's such a cozy little place. I love to come with a group of girlfriends for birthday dinners and take over the back room. It's also a romantic place for a date! Several choices for outside seating too -- you can eat on the patio or even on a new deck across the creek! You will be offered the choice of Tom Yum soup or a side salad with your meal. CHOOSE THE SOUP. It is soooo good!!!! The Tom Yum is the best best best, spicy and flavorful. I am obsessed with it! It's always hard to decide on an entree, but I love the Bolivian al Gusto, the yellow and red curries, and the sweet potato peanut pasta. Their chocolate raspberry cake is to die for when they have it! I like that it's BYOB, so you can bring whatever you want! Oh, and their Sunday brunch buffet is also great. I've lived here for over six years, and yesterday was the first time I stopped by at this Thai Fusion/Latin American restaurant off of Richland Ave. An understated restaurant presence in the Athens community, Purple Chopstix does offer flavors otherwise absent in a fifty-mile radius. Unfortunately, the food is salty, sad, and uninspired. Red and green curries taste no better than a $3.95 offering anywhere else--in fact, much worse, due to the saltiness. My order of curry with tofu came with chicken instead--which was itself overcooked. The single server was nice enough to take it away, but returned with an undercooked tofu curry. Serves me right for complaining, I guess. Other dishes I sampled suffered similar issues, minus the rather serious protein mix-up. Tom yum soup and salads were good, however. But after six years of waiting, a tremendous disappointment. BYOB. Entrees $12-18. Open most days for dinner only, some weekend brunches. read more
