This was probably the best burrito I've ever had. I had the chipotle ranch big mamma with chorizo. Not too much rice (which is just a filler at some other burrito places I could mention), nicely sauced and a good balance of flavors. The chorizo was a little spicy, but not too bad. If you can handle Tabasco's smoky chipotle hot sauce, you can handle this burrito. The big mamma is about the same size as the burritos from a large national chain. Big Mamma's also has some unique ingredients other places don't have. Some have said that it was cold, but that's because some ingredients are hot, some are cold, so the cold ingredients cool off the hot ones. The service was great too. I wandered to the beer shop next door while I was waiting, and the dude there took a lot of time explaining some of the local beers to me. So glad we went here. They don't have a restroom, so grab extra napkins if you're eating in. read more

Taste-wise? Eh, ok. Size? Small. Aftermath? Within 30 minutes I was experiencing what can only be described as the shits of a devil cat. The kind of situation where you start questioning your life choices, your diet, and whether you've wronged any ancient gods recently. We came in here for late night food after Brew Week. It was pretty empty so service was quick. My boyfriend and I got the loaded burrito to share and it was delicious. He went to college in Athens and was raving about Big Mamma's, but was disappointed that their portion size had majorly shrunk in the last few years. Genuinely a solid place to go for a burrito. The pricing isn't as bad as some other places, and you get a nice full burrito when you order. My only real complaint is that I found parts of my burrito to be ice cold while others were warm/hot. It's not that big of a deal, it's more of a personal gripe! Just don't be afraid to ask for it to be warmed up a bit more if that's what you're wanting! The setting is very relaxing, not a very busy place which makes dining in much more comfortable and less crowded. It's very quiet and has plenty of space to sit with your friends and enjoy a meal. As a former student at OU, Big Mama's was a staple part of my diet (normally around 1 am Thursday - Saturday nights). Since graduating over a decade ago, I have had Big Mama's sporadically if driving thru Athens. It had been about 6 years since stopping at the Athens establishment, and I must say it holds the test of time. I have always loved that Big Mama's has multiple sizes for their burritos and a variety of choices. I ordered the baby Buffalo Mama and it was awesome. They have some of the best buffalo sauce along with great fresh ingredients for vegetables. Is this the best burrito I have had? No. Is this authentic? No. Big Mamma's is a trip of nostalgia for those who went to Ohio University, they have great customer service, and is a great fusion burrito (must try Buffalo Mama/Breakfast mama/Chipotle Ranch is the fave of many). read more

I have another choice to get some mediocre Mexican shit in Athens, and it's Big Mamma's Burritos. It's of course best eaten after you can no longer make sound choices on your own. The food ingredients are not above cafeteria grade quality. It can be poor service. The food is cheap though, and you're not likely to care that much about the lack of taste, only the filling up of your stomach after all its contents have been projected. I have never eaten here sober so I won't be able to say anything about that. It's open until 3 which is later than most places, so it will likely be your only choice upon finishing up at every bar in Uptown. The inside of the restaurant is surprisingly clean even late for the night rush. It has a few stools by the window so you can see revelers stumble and trip. The burritos come in two sizes. A small is in the $3 range, and a regular is in the $5 range. The small is good if you don't want leftovers. The Mamma Grande is 2 pounds. It's packed with meat and vegetables. I like the Veggie Grande. This substitutes guacamole for the meat. It's like the other Mexican fast food where you order in the line. They are unique for their odd toppings. You can get cole slaw or potatoes in your burrito. It also has typical sides like chips but you can have hummus instead of guacamole or the salsa. All the burritos are fairly cheap. As for the taste it's not impressive. The burrito is bland, it tastes like canned everything, and they can look like a big mess. It can vary on service. The service at night can be really bad as the counter workers have a hard time with the hooligans. It's still really the only time you should eat this. The burritos are just too plain sober. I would stay away if you're sober. It's not good and really you're missing out on the fun. The best time is late at night because of the free entertainment provided by the winos. read more

This is the place you go to after spending a few hours at the bars. It's good "drunk food", but not for much else. The meat all seems frozen and reheated to order. No grill. Chipotle definitely is my go to for burritos in Athens and has FRESH ingredients. Big Mama's CONSTANTLY messes up my order. I've had to send delivery drivers back 3 separate times for incorrect orders and it's also happened to friends as well. They've actually given me free burritos twice as compensation for order mix ups. How hard is it to read a receipt and put in the correct ingredients? I understand that people make mistakes, but it's a constant occurrence. That said, the staff is always extremely friendly and accommodating, which bumped them up a star. read more

Went here because chipotle was put of rice and queso. Mistake. The staff are chill but my drink wasn't. Couldn't even get a cold drink; room temperature bottled Dr. Pepper. The food... I ordered a burrito with steak, rice, queso, onions and tomatoes. Everything just tastes under seasoned. Steak ain't that good, and can't find any queso. My gf got a chicken bowl and she "would rather have had canned chicken". You pay the same price for food as chipotle for LOWER QUALITY OF FOOD AND SMALLER PORTIONS. My burrito was half the size of chipotle and the bowl was half the size as well. I have wanted to try this place for months but that came and went. Also, I learned a lesson. Eat something you wouldn't really like at chipotle rather than coming here, because you will at least get a decent portion of food for the same price. A lot of room for improvement. read more

Big Mamma's Burritos stood out from the other store fronts on the street. The logo was appealing and drew us to it. The inside was very minimal, but nice for a space so small. The staff members were very friendly and helpful. The selection to choose from is pretty good - they even have a vegan option - and you can choose to build your own burrito. Small burritos were around $4.50 and regular were around $7.50. I had the Mamma Grande Burrito - protein (steak), tomato, rice, beans (I had them removed), cilantro, lime juice, lettuce, salsa, and maybe a couple other things I could be forgetting. It was pretty good, but it would've been great if it was hot. The food was more lukewarm by the time we got to eat it, and that is my single complaint. My OU alum friends had raved about this place, so we were excited to try it. I was even more excited when I realized there was a breakfast burrito option - my favorite. That was about where the excitement ended. I understand most of the customers are probably blackout college students, but no amount of alcohol could have made this food good. I don't even think the breakfast burrito had eggs - it was pretty much just a bland tortilla with blander hash browns inside. White carbs on white carbs with zero flavor. My friends were equally unimpressed by their non-breakfast burritos. While I'll come right out and say that Chipotle is indeed better, there's still a great and inexpensive burrito to be had at Big Mamma's, especially if you like nontraditional burrito fixings. Cole slaw on your burrito? It can happen here. Potatoes too. While I"m admittedly more of a burrito purist, my more adventurous friends favor Big Mamma's for the range of surprising toppings. As others have said, the advantages Big Mamma's has over Chipotle are that they are open later and are less expensive. I like that you can order burritos in a small or large size--something Chipotle should really think about doing because sometimes I can only eat half a burrito, the tortilla gets gummy and soggy in the fridge, and I ultimately wind up throwing it out... which is obviously devastating. The point is, if you're not starving, the small size is still a good, filling burrito. Try the Mamma Grande or the Veggie Mamma (which swaps out meat for their decent guacamole). Also, know that if you're here at 2:30 AM with 200 drunk people, it's probably not going to be a terrific burrito. read more

The burrito building landscape in Athens is surprising dense, has a striking history, and I believe is a tough territory for a new burrito shop to launch onto the scene. To that end, Big Momma Burritos fairs well but does not throw a salsa-infused knock-out punch from the shadows of the competition. Walking into Big Momma's, you quickly sense that while this is a hole in the wall it is at least clean and well ordered. There are a few bar stools in a bay window area as well as along one wall. The atmosphere is not very comfortable or overly inviting by any measure but it is highly functional and easy to maintain I expect when crowds pour in seeking a reward from an otherwise successful late night marathon of bar hopping. The menu provides a great assortment of burritos and ingredients ranging from the traditional, to custom options to create your own, to the highly creative (e.g. Mamma Club, Philly Momma, and the Carolina Mamma). I choose to build my own regular (24 oz.) Mamma Grande burrito with a combo of ground beef, rice, beans, cheese, onions, sour cream, guacamole, and Momma Luvs medium salsa. My first reaction after paying and picking-up the burrito was the huge size and weight -- absolutely needs two hands to eat. After a few bites I pretty much settled on my assessment that this burrito a great value but it also was really nothing spectacular. I found the overall flavor lacking, the salsa added no noticeable punch nor did the slightly spiced beef, it just seemed bland. The rice seemed the freshest ingredient in the blend which really doesn't say much for what should be a flagship product full of flavor. The guacamole, which added .75 cents to the price, had an good flavor but I also sensed that if I had not added this to my Mamma Grande, I would not have been able to tell it was missing. I think I might of enjoyed a better tasting burrito had I picked anything beside the ground beef, in particular choosing the steak or chicken option. But the reality is the experience over all was ho-hum. In summary, Big Momma is putting together some good burritos, and certainly worth a try. The customer service was pretty good, and the lone staff who helped me make choices and explained the menu was very friendly and upbeat--this is always a big plus and easily added a start to my review. However, I maintain the Burrito Buggy, Casa Nuevo, and Chipotle's, each that are within a block of Big Momma's, offer serious completion with great products in their own right, and for this burrito fan, Big Momma's would unfortunately come in last in comparison. read more

This evening was no exception and we got a tip to check out this burrito spot. I don't feel like its fair to compare this to chipotle. The ideology of this place is just completely different. But, that being said, this is certainly more of a late night chow time place than a grab a quick lunch spot. My chipotle ranch burrito was mildly spicy, really nice flavor and generously portioned. These are simple burritos, so don't be expecting lavish ingredients but you can expect to be full and happy afterwards (yet full of shame the following morning). I've been to Athens twice, I've had Big Momma's twice. Both were incredible!

Big Mama's is exactly what I need it to be- cheap, fast, and filling. I understand that many people say "don't go here sober" but every time I go, I am sober and I think it's just fine. They have a wide variety of options, and I enjoy everything I've tried. They even have a Chili Mamma option which is great for someone like me who needs her Skyline fix every once in a while. My favorite is the Chipotle Ranch Mamma. The interior doesn't have much seating and always smells a little funky- I suppose that would be a huge turn-off but I've been eating here occasionally for three years now and I've never gotten sick. You can watch them make the burritos, and they keep the area clean. Don't expect Chipotle quality, and you won't be disappointed. Their ingredients are simple but it's tasty and inexpensive so I go here more often than Chipotle anyway (and this is coming from someones who is more or less a food snob- I have high expectations). read more

I ordered the chipotle burrito with chicken and with salsa on the side it was about 6 dollars which seemed kind of steep in my opinion. The burritos itself was just ok but the hot salsa definitely made it a great deal better. The salsa was just the right level of heat with a ton flavor.
