Jeremy, (my gourmet partner in crime and restaurant finds,) made the decision to no longer patronize another rodizio style restaurant in Hackettstown; were in search of a new Brazilian barbecue. After reading several negative reviews that suggested Newark's marvelously diverse Ironbound district, I did a little Yelp search and landed on this gem, Casa Nova Grill. I braved the bane of my existence, Route 78 and worked my way through the myriad of the one-way streets until I got to Ferry street and I immediately saw it. Found parking easily at the bank, and walked in. One and a half hours by car for me, but it was worth it. Atmosphere was cheerful with lovely exposed brick. Tables were very well spaced for privacy, and well set. Joseph warmly greeted us, and sat us by the window overlooking the street that I requested. After taking our drink order he was together enough to lower the speaker that was by our table that was playing some nice lively Brazilian songs. We were served home made potato chips, and a 3-tier plate filled with some of the best potato salad, I've had in years, though the fried bananas is a favorite. We came there for the meat, and were pleasantly surprised to see the parade of pork, chicken, and beef arrive hot and yummy. The chicken leg was so moist and flavorful... the Picanha sirloin steak was juicy and seasoned perfectly; I asked for rare and Jeremy medium rare, and were obliged. Joseph is a charming host , and we had an opportunity to chat with him and learned that the owner also owns a restaurant not that far from where we live, which was a very happy discovery. Saturday night, this place was packed and rightfully so. Waitstaff so pleasant. Band came on. Such a lively atmosphere. Food...Omg so good. The potato chips were nice and hot, crisp. The tower of potato salad, salad, yucca fries, fries and bananas. Rice and black beans. 15 scrumptious meats and cinnamon dusted grilled pineapple just keep coming out til you flip that red hard stop card over. Such an enjoyable meal. No one is rushing you. Came here during the Portugal Day Festival and was expecting spotty service and cold food, but man was I pleasantly surprised! The Staff: Super friendly, super nice and super attentive! The Food: Super DELICIOUS! I got the Rodizio + Buffet and it was all very yummy and filling. My favorite meats were the chicken, the picanha, bottom sirloin and the short rib. YUM. I went here with a friend and we are ordering with a older gentleman at the bar and once the food comes he keeps asking us to try other foods but he's making it seem like it just to try. Next thing you know we get the bill and it everything we tried is on the menu. Shame on us for not knowing this guy was using the verbiage of a someone who is trying to get Over on you . After a few days I look at the pending charge for 180 and when it clears the amount changed to 210.00 someone added their own tip extra . This place is a scam . Avoid at all cost !!! I'm giving this review based solely on the late night bar and live band. My husband and I enjoyed the vibe and danced a lot. He is Brazilian so he recognized many songs the band and DJ played. This is the first rodízio I go to where they don't serve picanha, the most traditional Brazilian bbq meat. They also stopped serving us any meat for about 20 minutes and came asking if we wanted the check after only serving us 4-5 times (we still had our cards with the green side up) and all they served was sausage, chicken and ribs. They also did away with the salad bar they used to have. For a restaurant in the center of a Brazilian community they are not serving to standards. This place was absolutely awful. I ordered food while my friends going the rodezeo. My food never came out and the rodezio goes for maybe one round and then stops. Getting in touch to order drinks was impossible we only got two rounds of drinks in the three hours we were trapped there. When you order drinks it takes 20+ minutes to get them and you need to remind them multiple times to get them to deliver it to the table. You also don't get water while your sitting so your going to be hungry, thirsty, and stressed out by the time dinner is over. I felt like i was in purgatory. read more

I go here fairly regularly ( about once every 3 months with some new woman friend ) . The food is great , the waiting staff is Portugese and friendly ( English is not their first language ) . The place is decorated with an old world Portugese decor , they have a small stage with live music where you come in at night . The place fills up regularly so come early . I love this place! i have been here 4 times now. This is some of the best Brazilian BBQ you're gonna find. I always get the Rodizio style in which they bring out so many meats!!! chicken wrapped in bacon, pork loin, flank steak, chicken hearts if your adventurous :), tons of steak and I PROMISE. you will be sooooo uncomfortably full. As far as rodizio goes, not impressive at all. The salad bar lacked enough items to make a salad and it smelled rather unpleasant. My gf had the chicken which was basically the same chicken they use for rodizio but you get 3 pieces. I had the rodizio and from time I ordered to the time it came out it took over 1 hr! Unacceptable. The staff doesn't speak much English which is cool. The waiter was friendly but a little aloof. As bad as this may be to say, Iberia's was better. Disappointed that we didn't go to Fernandes which is better but it's always good to try something different...and fail. Stay away from the Sangria with Champagne. It's $35 and doesnt taste good. We came here to celebrate a belated Father's Day with my dad. We were a party of 10. 9 of us had the rodizio, my mom had the paella. We also ordered 2 pitchers of red sangria. Sangria was good, rodizio was below average as we mostly got pork and poultry and not a good selection of beef. I guess this is what a $36 rodizio ($6 up charge on weekends) will get you? Service was not good, we waited over an hr to get served the rodizio. It seemed that they only come to your table to serve the meats after you get the 3-tier server containing the rice,fries, etc. they asked if we wanted black or pinto beans, and we ordered the black beans, which never came. Searched google for a good rodizio and stumbled upon Casa Nova Grill. Went to their website and saw pictures of extensive salad bar and Brazilian Buffet with all sorts of options. Then they list 17 meats that will be offered tableside. What a bait and switch. You get there, and they one of the non-english speaking waiters says "yes salad bar." We sit down and they bring a holder of three plates - one has some lettuce, tomato and cucumber - the next has potato salad and the third has french fries and three plantains. That is the replacement for the salad bar and Brazilian buffet. When asked for some water, they sell you bottled water, no tap available. The meat was mostly overcooked and all was extremely salty. If you are not offering what is advertised due to COVID, that is fine, but you need to say that on your website. Not lure us in with photos and descriptions of things not offered. I have been to many rodizios in my life, and this was the worst quality and so overpriced it made everyone in our party upset. What a rip off. read more

Came during Valentines day for a dinner with my love. I was happy to find a quaint authentic rodizio spot in Newark. The place is easy to get to but super hard to find parking. Menu is pretty simple. You can either do just the buffet or do the buffet with rodizio. They also include one drink and dessert with your meal. We chose to do the buffet and rodizio with one drink and dessert. There was some issue with a language barrier with our server but he did the best he could do to serve us so I can't complain. The buffet bar (which is a lot more than just a salad bar) was super good. You could totally just come for the buffet and skip the rodizio. They had everything from beans, rice, seafood, soups, etc.. Everything I tried was delicious. I'd just be careful about filling up on this if you're paying for rodizio. On to the rodizio, it was great. Some meats that came out were better than others. Some of my faves included the beef ribs and a skirt steak. Some meats were a little over cooked (in my opinion), however, EVERYTHING was good. I will say that I was hoping for a little more variety of meats. They went around with maybe 4 different variations and I was hoping for a little more. My meal included one drink which I ordered a sangria. It was tasty. I also ordered a caipirinha which was super tasty and reminded me of a sweet margarita. My meal also included dessert which was ice cream and they lit something on fire.. I don't remember what it was but it added to the "show". As others have complained, they already add the tip into the bill. It sucks that you don't have control of this but then it's nice to know that they are making sure their workers are compensated. The final bill also includes a "tip" line so be sure to note if you don't plan to tip twice. Pricing was a little more than I was hoping to spend especially due there not being much meat options. For two people we spent well over $100. Not terrible but have gotten cheaper elsewhere. But service was good for the most part and the food was good. I just got done eating here. They have a $20 special on to rodizio which is an all you can eat barbecue on Tuesdays. Me and my friend took full advantage of it. We had a party of 8 and they were able to accommodate our last minute reservation. Our server was very attentive and quick to meet our initial needs of sangria and bread filled with cheese (yum!). We ordered a strawberry sangria and passionfruit sangria. We all went with the rodizio bc hello, look where we were. It's a $30 rodizio dinner with the buffet. For a small place, the buffet was decent but we knew we didn't want to eat fillers before the meat lol. Overall, the chicken, pork, and prime rib was ok. I wasn't too thrilled with how fatty some cuts were and I guess that's what made it more chewy. Surprisingly the chicken and pork pieces were super juicy. The rest of the meat was just ok. Me and my boyfriend are frequent visitors to this restaurant, we go at least twice a month. The food is usually good as well as the drinks. The service is also on point most of the time. However my last visit left a bad taste and view of this establishment. I know noticed they are adding extra taxes to the bill, which is actually the gratuity. We were invisible the entire time until we ask the server for our bill; (we made sure to mention that we did not think it fair to pay for the Rodizio; when we did not get any meat aside for one chorizo. She huffed off and returned with our bill and slammed it down. I would never return to such a place; honestly who goes out to eat, only to be ignored and treated with such poor service? I am honestly appalled and I would not recommend this establishment at all. Needless to say we paid for our beers, but I felt that $30 for a salad bar we barley touched because we were waiting on the Rodizio that never came; was adding insult to injury. What can I say? Casa Nova Grill feels very authentic to me. It's a local bar & grill on Newark's popular Ferry Street. They usually have live Brazilian music on popular nights. Their have a wide variety of food choices, making it very hard to choose, but ask the server to recommend you something - the staff is super friendly and attentive.
