Casa Maya, located in Gillette and a quick drive through the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge from Morristown and Harding, is a cozy, casual, and brightly-colored -- complete with strings of multi-colored chili pepper string lights and mariachi music -- Mexican BYOB restaurant that serves up generous portions of tasty, fresh Mexican inspired dishes as well as traditional fajitas, burritos, tacos, and combination plates at a reasonable price with terrific service. It had been a while since we had been to Casa Maya, but the food and service was just as good as we remembered. My dining companion and I enjoyed digging into the basket of complimentary tortilla chips and cilantro-forward salsa served as soon as we sat down, but both thought the chips could have finished with a touch of salt. I'm a big fan of the Puerco Guisado ($16), a stew-like dish comprised of seasoned chunks of tender, braised pork served with onions, peppers, tomatoes, and olives, served alongside Mexican rice as well as warm flour tortillas. YUM! The portion size was enough to satisfy my hunger and leave me enough leftover for a lunch the next day. (No comment on whether I'd also filled up on the complimentary tortilla chips.) My dining companion was in the mood for something lighter and started with a cup of chilled gazpacho soup ($5) followed by the Ranchero Salad ($12), a large portion of tossed salad of iceberg lettuce topped with avocado, a hard-boiled egg, tomato, peppers, and onions, both of which she really enjoyed. The restaurant was moderately busy while we were there for dinner on a Saturday night, but our servers checked in on several times during our meal to keep our water glasses topped off and make sure we didn't need anything and were enjoying our meals. I'd give it 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5 stars. We'll definitely be back. PRO TIP #1: There are only two or three parking spots in the small paved lot next to the restaurant on Hickory Tavern Road, but there's a large gravel parking lot behind the restaurant on Meyersville Road (on the left side when facing the front of the restaurant) and a paved walkway to the restaurant. Make sure you don't park in any of the spots designated "Resident Parking Only" -- unless you live there. PRO TIP #2: The restaurant maximizes of the small space. The layout is cramped with only hardwood booth seating and tile-topped tables that accommodate either two or four diners. I don't recommend it for larger parties -- unless you prefer to dine separately -- or people with limited flexibility or mobility who may have trouble navigating in a confined space.

This place really hit the spot. After building up an appetite at the nearby Great Swamp and Raptor Trust, I headed here for lunch on Labor Day with two of my chums. I was a little nervous because we showed up right around 2PM and Casa Maya's website indicated they closed for a bit at 2:30PM, but they let us in and got us a legit meal in time. The parking situation is a bit awkward and took some navigating. The best comp I can give is the Flatiron Building in New York; the building is basically at the end of a narrow triangle (aka Meyersville and Hickory Tavern), so you have enough space for one or two cars to comfortably pull in on the side, but otherwise it's too close to the road and you end up jutting out into traffic. My chum had to park behind the restaurant and a few other buildings, but it could have been worse. Thankfully I spotted a sign nearby with additional parking instructions or we might have had to have gotten a little more creative in that regard. The one major negative here is that it feels VERY cluttered and claustrophobic in the restaurant. I didn't see enough of the interior to confirm if they just built in too many tables/booths, but each dining area has a very high partition that makes it feel even smaller. It may just depend on your perspective - some might consider it cozy - but if I have to position my body at certain angles to comfortably navigate the restaurant and my booth, that's a problem for me. I've stayed away from burritos for a while after experiencing some substandard ones in the Financial District, but I decided to make a comeback with the Tijuana Burrito, which featured marinated pork. I thought it was super tasty. I don't think this type of Mexican restaurant/food would ever be considered truly authentic ethnic cuisine - sort of the Sweet & Sour Chinese takeout equivalent, I suppose - but I'm a huge fan. For someone like me with a texture-based palate who doesn't typically like crunchy stuff in the middle of something soft, this was perfect - everything was saucy and ground down, if that makes sense. The pork was juicy and flavorful, and the sauces were great. It was a very decent portion that I probably only finished because of how many steps I'd accrued in the Swamp. The service was very good, especially when you consider that they needed to get us our food well before the 2:30PM closure. The food was made to order and yet came out within minutes, allowing us to comfortably consume our entrees. They DID push us out a little after 2:30PM, but I really didn't have an issue with that - we were done with the food and they could have just not allowed new customers in by the time we came in (and we knew about the closure ahead of time). An understandable kick in the rump. I'm rarely in this area but I'd absolutely come back, especially now that I understand the weird triangle parking lot situation.

Not sure why the reviews are low for this restaurant, I had a great experience! Service was quick, food large portions, and best of all, BYOB. You can get a pitcher of margarita mix and bring your own tequila. Interior decor gives a modern Mexican vibe. I tried the wet burrito and beef fajitas. I would recommend both of those menu items! Comes with free chips and salsa to munch on.

Haven't been to Casa Maya in years and super glad we came across this spot again! Food: the enchiladas Del Mar were insane. The wine sauce is packed with flavor and the dish had tons of seafood. The wet burrito was MASSIVE. It was also delicious but the seafood takes the cake. The Camarones in salsa verde (not pictured) were my absolute favorite dish. Perfectly cooked shrimp in delicious sauce. Service: the service was great. We were seated quickly, the food came quickly, and we were checked on multiple times. Ambiance: I love the ambiance here! It is definitely a bit dark but has such a unique feel. All of the decor is really cool. Value: 100% worth the prices. The portions are so big that nearly all of them could be split and the food was really good!

I usually get the cheese enchiladas. The enchiladas are gooey and the sides (rice and beans) are equally as delicious. Service: the service is always good and attentive

One of my familys favorite restaurants, i absolutely love casa maya. From the moment u step in the decor is so charming and the food is incredible- warm chips and salsa brought as soon as u sit down, and i feel like this is truly one of those places where i dont know what to recommend ppl bc i genuinely think everything is so good. The booths are such a great cozy way to catch up and talk and we tried the tres leches and flan desserts td and they were sooooo good. Cheese burrito was fantastic.

We've been eating here for years, I just realized I never did a review. Good, solid, Mexican cuisine, with a lot of interesting specials, but you can't go wrong with the old standards -- burritos, tacos, and enchiladas are all excellent. The salsa that comes with the chips is amazing and always requires a refill! Staff is generally pleasant, and the prices aren't terrible for the area. Parking is a little tough, but there is a gravel parking lot behind the building if necessary.

The bartender guided us on the drink options and offered suggestions, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I ordered the spicy margarita, which was delicious. We then were seated up stairs (the decor and ambiance of this place is beautiful!). They provide complimentary chips and salsa (my fav). The owner came by to apologize for the wait, which really wasn't terrible, and offered us two free tacos on the house. They were delicious! One chicken and one beef. We ordered the toca vez salad and plantain and coconut shrimp sushi (UNREAL!). Both were delicious but the plantain starter was heavenly. I ordered the scallop risotto. Delicious! My husband ordered the salmon and it was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Cooked to perfection!! The waitress knew we were celebrating and provided up to complimentary champagnes and ice cream. One of the best dining experiences. Can't wait to come back to try more!

Shrimp tacos - tender seasoned shrimp served on fresh corn tortillas and a spicy sauce on the side were excellent. The steaks - one medium rare ribeye was surprisingly lean, but tender and flavorful and was beautifully cooked. The filet ordered medium came somewhere between rare and medium rare. But it was tender as expected (it is prime filet after all). Asparagus side was phenomenal. Shoestring fries came out crisp but oddly room temp. Sea bass dish was good, but the menu description failed to adequately describe the ingredients. The steaks were typical upscale steakhouse, but I guess I was hoping for a more Mexican-inspired flare when it came to the sauces or sides. Service was well-coordinated and available and friendly and efficient. The area that was lacking was the knowledge of the food. No one knew what was in the sauce that accompanied the shrimp tacos. It's okay not to know perhaps, but say I don't know and go find out. Also requested information about the dishes was lacking, particularly when it came to food allergies which one person in our party had.
