As a 14 year AAA member, I've been accustomed to getting fast service. Yesterday was definitely not the case and after waiting 7 hours in the cold, dark, rain, I finally gave up, paid out of pocket, and called Angel. He showed up with his "wheel lift" tow truck and got my BMW up in no time. Angel was courteous on the phone and confident and reassuring in person. I saved his number just in case AAA fails me again. Don't get stranded waiting for AAA. Don't let your loved ones be stranded on the side of the road. Pay the money and get good reliable guys like Angel to get you towed to where you need to go. This is an area we are unfamiliar with and let alone we ended up pulling into this sketchy area as it was the closest off the freeway. My family and I had to leave our vehicle behind an alley and run to find a safe place to find a tow company. My experience with Vernola's felt like a scheme from start to finish…read more My car was towed at 10:20 AM, and I arrived at their office less than an hour later. The woman at the counter told me I needed releases from both the DMV and the sheriff's office before they could release it. I took Ubers around Norwalk and Bellflower to get everything together and returned by 2 PM--less than four hours after the tow. I asked about California Vehicle Code § 10652.5(d)(11), which addresses reduced storage charges when a vehicle is recovered within four hours. The employee said she had never heard of it and called the manager. The manager told me they only honor the FIRST HOUR. I explained that I had originally arrived within that hour but was sent away to get the required paperwork. She still refused. I then asked for an itemized invoice with accurate timestamps showing when the vehicle came into their possession. That's when both employees became visibly agitated. One grabbed a pen and said she would "just write down 10 AM," even though my car was towed at 10:20 AM. I questioned how they could simply pick a time when the timing was the very thing we were disputing. The manager told me my request was unreasonable and wasn't their typical business practice. How is asking for accurate documentation unreasonable? I explained again that I had arrived within the first hour. How was I supposed to know beforehand that I needed releases from two separate government offices? And how is someone supposed to visit the DMV and sheriff's office across town and return within an hour? The manager's response was that I should have known what paperwork I needed. After I paid $300, they told me my car wasn't even at that location and that I would have to walk somewhere else to pick it up. A tow of less than three miles, back with my paperwork before four hours had passed, $300 paid, and this is how I was treated. Being towed is stressful enough. Being treated like a problem for asking questions and requesting accurate documentation made it worse.
