Decided to return because I was thinking about the Carne Asada steak plate and had a much better experience this time! During this visit, the wait time for food was significantly better than last time (only waited about 10 minutes). I also got the chance to try the Birria Taco, Shrimp taco, and Fish Taco. The Birria taco was divine! Well seasoned meat and had excellent flavors even though it didn't come to consumé. The fish and shrimp tacos were pretty good, too, but didn't stand out as much as the Birria one. The price of the food is also so reasonable! read more

We came here for a quick dinner. We had the happy hour Modelo to kick off a relaxing evening. The server was nice and helpful with our dinner selection. I had 3 tacos, chicken, beef and El pastor. The charred flavor was amazing. The tacos are simple but delicious. It's perfect portion for me. My boyfriend ordered a tongue taco and the Gordita. Service slowed a bit when more customers arrived. Burrito de Asada and Carne a la Tampiqueña. Every good Mexican restaurant in my point of view has to have a good burrito and Casa Calderón does. It came with a side of lettuce, tomato, avocado sliced with sour cream on the side so you can serve your self as you like. The burrito is a good size although not big to my standard, very tasty LOVE the spicy salsa! Music plays a little louder than I like sometimes but it works with the colorful ambiance and rustic, hacienda-like architecture, and picturesque oil paintings. The Tampiqueña plate was fresh served with beans, cheese, one small enchilada, lettuce. The meat topped with cooked white onion and sliced jalapeños was tasty but not as much as the burrito. I've been wanting to stop by for a few years, but today I finally stopped with the wife and enjoyed the food and ambiance, you should stop by and try it too. Oh! I really didn't expect much to be honest. It was a Friday night and nobody was inside. I thought it would be a "got the job done" meal but I was pleasantly surprised. The beans were just so wholesome and delicious. The chicken soup also wasn't red (bouillon typically) and looked truly from scratch with chayote, and whole chicken legs with clear broth. This is a good place if you're craving Mexican food as you're driving through the San Gabriel Valley. Although the SGV is known for a lot of Asian food, this place fits right in! We came as a group and we all ordered something different. All the food was made fresh, and everything looked and smelled delicious. This might just be me but I hate Mexican restaurants that serve smooth salsa; they never taste as good as the chunky salsas. I will say that the green salsa is tasty (not spicy at all), I just prefer the chunky tomato kind. Got enchilada plate and the sauce was a wee bit bitter, tasted mildly like chipotle if I'm not mistaken. I'm not a huge fan of smokey enchiladas so I wouldn't recommend or order them again. Plate was served with lettuce, rice & beans. All of it seemed good quality but lacked a bit in flavor. I like everything spicy so maybe that's a personal problem. Price of everything was average - about $15 per person. No dealbreaker there. Service was OK - we went on a Friday night and sat outside, was not busy from what I could tell. Tip on the parking: the sidewalk exit directly in front of Casa Calderon has an incredibly steep dip, so avoid it. Enter/exit by the little (Indian/Pakistani) shop on the other side of the lot. Lot is tiny as well, so might call for street parking. Not a bad experience overall but not really a spot that left me with a good enough impression for a return visit. read more

We saw this restaurant while driving down Las Tunas and we decided to try it. It was very good. I ordered the huarache with beans and rice and it was delicious. The service was impeccable. The owners son and the waitress Jessica was very kind, attentive, easy going and very accommodating. The restaurant had the traditional Mexican style decor with limited seating. They had outdoor seating that was decent and parking lot was very small. However, they had parked on the street and in the rear of the restaurant. I will try the ceviche next time. read more

We got seated right Way the interior have classic look that we like then waiter came and hand us the menu and ask us our drinks order my wife order a Hibiscus drink then I order a Mexico coke bottle. Then we order my wife order the caldo de Pollo or chicken soup and also order a bean and cheese burrito then I order a Chili renello plate one of my favorite dishes. Then the waiter brought our food it looks and smell really good. I took a bite of my chili renello it was really good lots of flavor in the chile and also the sauce and especially the cheese it was good and chewy that's the kind-of cheese I like. The rice and beans were full of flavor that I really like and comes with a salad with avocado on top. My wife enjoy her caldo de Pollo or chicken soup also comes with freshly made tortillas. Used to come here for drinks only becuase the food was not authentic. But it's now under new ownership. Pretty much the same decor and ambiance but now serving amazing food. There's something for everyone. Loved their kid friendly menu. My girls loved their chicken nuggets and quesadilla. I even enjoyed the chicken nuggets. An honest review here. I went thinking that this place looked really cute. And it is. But that's the extent of it. My son ordered some beef soup and we were initially impressed that the meat was bone-in. That adds flavor. But the broth tasted a little gamey. The meat was not tender and it was overcooked so the chunks of meat were all curled up super unappetizing. I ordered the fajitas. They were bland. The peppers were crunchy and undercooked. I had to ask for sour cream and salsa for on the side. The rice was crunchy. Disgusting. My fiancee ordered a plate that had a taco and chile relleno. It was ok. The beans were good but the rice was also crunchy. Old rice, maybe?? The homemade tortillas were really good but they shouldn't be the star of the show. And my michelada was nearly tasteless. Almost like they just toss a tablespoon of store bought sprices into a draft beer. The cost for three meals and two micheladas was eye watering. $91!!! Skip this place. Tried Casa Calderon for delivery and wonderfully surprised by the high quality, home cooked items delivered fresh and warm to our door: 1) chili rellano not greasy, cooked perfectly with not too much cheese and just the right spice 2) chili verse tender, not too salty, homemade flavor 3) delicious enchilada plate with well cooked pinto beans and tasty rice. Located on Las Tunas in San Gabriel is one of the few authentic Mexican restaurants nearby to our home. The food is good and the service is fairly quick, as we were able to have dinner in under an hour. The restaurant feels small, but good enough to party for Cinco de Mayo. Another reason I wanted to dine here was for the taquitos, which were delicious and great guacamole to boot. My only gripe is they don't have refills of ice tea, which is normally free at most restaurants. read more

Had a great experience eating here. Their birria was delicious and their hand made tortillas add to the great flavorful meal. They provide birria salsa to kick it up a notch. We also tried their shrimp cocktail before the main meal. That was also delicious. The shrimp was cleaned and the cocktail didn't shy from the number of shrimps they add and avocado. This is a small restaurant in just outside of Alhambra. A "hole in the wall" if you will. But their food is good and filling. My favorite so far is the Steak Picado. This is one of the few left in the area and I definitely recommend this one for Mexican food. read more

We asked the waitress if the recipe changed. She said the meat was made by someone else in the morning. It was not good. Tasted almost sour. Nothing was done to correct the issue.
