This review is based on one visit on opening night - if this is what Casa Azul is going to deliver as time goes on, it will be a hit. The owners have taken the Talde space, modernized and freshened it up, and painted it Frida Kahlo blue. The menu is a good size and features largely Oaxacan dishes. I judge all honestly Mexican restaurants by their mole and Casa Azul delivers: smoky, with just the right amount of cinnamon, chiles, and bitter chocolate, not that cloyingly sweetish goop that so many places pass off as mole. We also tried the flautas (tasty), the guacamole - really good but there were a few big chunks of avocado that missed the masher, the barbacoa - yummy, and the enchiladas, which my friend greatly enjoyed. For dessert, we shared pan con horchata ice cream and churros, both of which were excellent. Prices are reasonable for quality and quantity of food (and for the neighborhood) and service was very attentive, a surprise given that it was their first night & it was packed. This place is spacious and beautiful. The bar, sugar skull decor and gorgeous blue booth tables, with their liquid-like swirls that remind me of marbleized bowling balls. House cocktails are delicious, especially the spicy hibiscus margaritas. We sampled many apps and entrees, all of which were generous portions and full of flavor. The service was good, albeit a little off due to the large space and the many guests, both inside and outdoors, on a Friday evening. No biggie and we shall return. read more

I don't know what makes Oaxaca style Mexican food different but I do know Casa Azul is tasty! Me and my husband are always game to try a new restaurant in the neighborhood so when Casa Azul took over Talde's old spot, we decided to stop by for dinner. We both ordered tacos and shared an appetizer while my daughter had a kids plate. They do have a kids menu! I had the al pastor tacos and my husband had the carne asada tacos. Both were very good and I'm shocked the steak was not dry. I can't stress enough it's hard to find good carne asada for tacos because it always ends up being a bit on the dry side because they cook in bulk. I was surprised to find the al pastor a bit dry but the flavor was nice. The Queso Fundido (Bubbling cheese fondu with shitake mushrooms, spinach & fresh handmade tortillas) was so freaking good! Honestly I could eat the whole thing by myself. It was so flavorful and the melty cheese....oh my god. My daughter had the chicken flautas which is basically rolled crispy tacos filled with braised chicken. She loved it and finished all three without me reminding her to eat her food every 5 minutes. The staff was super friendly and the food came pipping hot. Overall, an amazing experience and we can't wait to go back to try the other menu items. read more

Casa Azul is a great addition to Park Slope! I love the funky decor and the staff were attentive and friendly. They don't have their liquor license yet but you can BYOB. We opted for the Apple soda and limeade which were both refreshing. We started with the flautas which were crispy, but didn't have as much flavor as everything else we ordered. We also got the queso with shiitake mushrooms and spinach. It was a great twist on a classic queso. Very flavorful! For entrees, we had the fish of the day and the enchiladas. While the fish of the day is pricy, it's worth it if you love a whole fish. The rub on the fish was flavorful and paired well with their hot sauces. The enchiladas were also excellent. The sauce was similar to a molé with some added spice. Would definitely recommend and I'm looking forward to going back for more! read more

We came here for Cinco de Mayo and it was hoppin'! Tamale of the day was delicious - chicken with mole sauce. Skirt steak entree was simple yet delicious and loved the homemade corn tortillas served with it. My husband got the tlayuda which was definitely the winner dish of the table. The food here is spectacular! Melts in your mouth, bursting with flavors. The cocktails are very creative and refreshing. My favorite dish here is the tamales. It's HUGE and sooooooooo delicious. The tamales here remind me so much of the ones I got from family in California. Wrapped in banana leaf and steamed to perfection. The tamales are not on the Cavier or Grubhub menu. Neither is the cocktail menu, they only offer red, white, rose on the delivery menu. So that's the draw back-I have to call the restaurant and drag my lazy butt 6 blocks to pick up if I want a hot tamale and cocktail. My husband and son love the fish taco and grilled steak here. If they can have a full menu for delivery, including all different cocktail, I would eat here every week!!! read more

Really enjoyed this new addition to the neighborhood. They don't have their liquor license yet (currently BYOB--they'll bring you a wine chiller for the table or keep your alcohol at the bar) but I was really impressed by the creative menu of non-alcoholic offerings. A nearby table BYOB-ed a bottle of tequila to spike their non-alcoholic margaritas so you could always take that route haha. Sounds like they already have been approved for their liquor license and should have the bar open by end of August. We shared the queso, chile relleno salad, vegetarian tyaludas (kind of like an open-face quesadilla?), and a side of broccoli rabe to offset the queso and were happy with all of it. The queso (with mushrooms and spinach baked in) was really a standout imo, although I do wish it came with a couple more small tortillas to scoop the queso into because my tortillas were really straining under the weight of cheese I was applying. Casa Azul is now my new favorite Brooklyn restaurant period, not just my favorite Mexican restaurant. A bold claim, for sure, so let me explain. This little gem in the former Talde space in Park Slope just opened up last weekend. I'd heard great things about it, so my wife and I decided to check it out for ourselves. The first thing you notice is the blues - not the music, but literally the dark blue shade cascading through the restaurant's inner and outer walls. I then found out that 'Casa Azul's' inspiration was Frida Kahlo's "Blue House," her former childhood residence but now a museum in Mexico City. There's actually a nod to Kahlo with a skeletal mannequin in the entrance. The restaurant looks pristine and well-designed. There's an attention to detail: fresh flowers on every table. Next, the food, which was outstanding. 1) For appetizers, we ordered a Caesar Salad, an interesting play on the classic dish: iceberg lettuce wedges with scrumptious chicken croquetas, little heavenly dollops of deliciousness. 2) For my entre, I ordered a Carne Asada. The tortillas were homemade: fluffy clouds of corn wrappers. The steak was perfectly grilled and tasty. 3) My wife ordered a Barbacoa, which was some of the best tasting pork we'd ever had. The sauce was like a light guacamole. We'll be ordering that one again. And again. 4) Finally, we topped off the meal with a pecan pie with horchata gelato. The pie was warm and savory, balanced by the lightness of the ice cream. Heavenly. Service was also excellent as well. I'm generally impatient at restaurants, and yet the food came out quickly, despite a packed house with nay an empty seat. And I loved the open-air kitchen, where you can see the chefs preparing the food from scratch with high-quality ingredients, made with love and care. The food reminded me of Rick Bayless' Frontera Grill in Chicago. This will be one of our regular restaurants - an excellent find on 7th Ave. We'll be back soon. read more

I was very excited to try Casa Azul, as a new addition to our neighborhood. However, besides service and feeling welcome, everything else was mediocre, and that's a stretch. We ordered the tyaluda, chicken tacos, guacamole and queso fundido. Everything was lacking flavor. Too dry of items and not enough salt or flavor in general. Super disappointing. I would give it another try just because we live nearby, but honestly a very big let down. read more

Great servers who are incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and responsive. Everything we ate and drank was absolutely delicious. I especially enjoyed the simple fish: wonderful grill flavor and perfectly cooked. The drinks were very tasty and beautifully garnished. Highly recommend the watermelon margarita. This is a new restaurant in park slope! The whole menu is Oaxacan, which is the area in Mexico with the best gastronomy. The food is excellent! We started with the chicken flautas and guacamole... I mixed both and yum!! The mole is a superstar! It is definitely the traditional Oaxacan mole negro, not that bland sauce that a lot of Mexican restaurants try to pass as "mole". The tlayudas were also pretty amazing - more than enough for one person. We ended with my favorite desert, flan. Not all places get flan right; this one was perfect! Just the way I like it. I can't wait for them to get the alcohol license!!! I was very pleased with the service - the food came out quickly and the server was super friendly. My experience here was nothing short of amazing. Came here with 2 friends on a HOT summer day. We were able to sit outside on a small table away from other customers. Our server was so kind and friendly (wish I could remember her name)! She informed us of the happy hour drink specials, and I really appreciated that she came back to our table just before happy hour ended to see if we wanted to order more drinks. The margaritas we all ordered were FANTASTIC. So refreshing and the perfect amount of tequila. For apps we ordered chips and guacamole and the grilled octopus with the chorizo vinaigrette. Both were so good!! Our server gave us extra chips to use for the chorizo sauce. For mains we shared the chicken enchiladas with abuelita sauce and the barbacoa dish with the braised lamb. Both were really good. Abuelita sauce definitely had a strong kick to it so only order if you enjoy spice. Lamb was super tender and flavorful. Overall really good food. Definitely more on the pricey end, but you can taste the effort that was put into every dish. Highly recommend and would return! read more

The tortillas are incredibly think and difficult enough to cut through that I almost launched mine across the table trying to get through it. The inside temperature went from toasty to frigid within an hour and it got very uncomfortable. Maybe the other food is different, but DEFINITELY don't get a quesadilla here. read more

I'm Mexican so I'm picky but I loved the food!!They had not gotten their liquor license so we brought our own. The only thing is that there's too much blue. It could use more different accent colors. Frida was all about colors not just blue. The bar area seemed more colorful than the rest of the place. The huge skull mural in the back wall could be more colorful or detailed. It looked unfinished. I've been super excited to check this place out! And tonight I finally got the chance to. We had the Queso Fondid as an appetizer and also the tuna tartare with avocado which was a special appetizer. Both were completely delicious! As They do not have a beer and wine license as of yet we did BYOB our own wine. A not so hidden gem in Park Slope, and it blew us away! The service was amazing and the food matched that! We got the branzino, one of each of the tacos, the guacamole, the flan, and the tres leches. Everything was outstanding, and the branzino was the best we've ever had! The fav taco was the pork and pineapple one, will be getting 3 next time. The outdoor atmosphere was so nice and we felt totally safe with all of the cleaning precautions be taken. What a great place to have some authentic Mexican cuisine. We started with the flautas de pollo. They were piping hot, crispy and absolutely delish. The tacos are fresh and very flavorful. We ordered the pork tacos as well as the chicken. The wings were savory but really spicy, not suggested for those with weak pallets. We enjoyed them! The guacamole was gone in 2 min flat! We had some tasty cocktails and the rice and beans were reminiscent of something that would come out of my grandmas kitchen. We ordered both the flan & tres leches and devoured both as soon as I blew out the candle! The service is amazing. Everyone was super attentive to our needs. They checked the table several times to make sure we were enjoying the food and to refill the drinks. Really enjoyed the food here. It was authentic Spanish food. My family and I had the fish tacos, mushroom and chicken quesadilla. We also had the guacamole and the rice and beans for starters. The drinks were great as well, I got one with mint can't recall the name, but it was amazing. The food was filled with rich flavor and did not disappoint. We were stuffed but wanted to continue to eat because of how great the food was. We ended our dinner with churros which I feel were undercooked but we were running late for another event so didn't request another.
