We had Jerry out to our place today to do some serious stucco repair. We had a few areas that were deep and covered a large space. Our place is almost 75 years old and had at least 5 layers of stucco over the original plaster. We were down to the original plaster in a couple of spots and had the biggest area of about 6 to 8 feet long of the last coat of stucco (28 years old) gone in another spot. About 7 places needed work. Jerry came out on 3-18-21 in the morning right on time to give us an estimate. I showed him all the trouble spots. He told me all he would do to the places to clean up loose stuff, seal the areas, build the plaster back up and then match the texture. Because of previous estimates, Jerry's rating and reviews on Yelp and the knowledge he displayed, we hired him for the job. Today, 3-22-21, Jerry came out on time and ready to knock the job out. In 5 hours he was completed, cleaned up all areas and was joking with my wife and I. We were thrilled with the results. If it wasn't for the fact that his repair was a different color (we are going to paint whole house and did not care about color), you would not be able to tell any repair was done. Texture was a perfect match and blending into the old stucco has the look of a master's hand. Jerry Carver does great work and does it quickly. The man knows his business. His price was less than half of other estimates I got. He started the job only a couple of days after giving us the estimate rather than a few weeks later and only took one day to complete. Keeping to the facts here. This contractor (Terry Carver) does not carry insurance. My ceiling repair job (2 ft by 2 ft) was estimated at $850 for 4-6 hours, with the caveat it could be more or less based on what he might find when he got into it. Job took 3 hours (8:30-1:30 minus the hour he was gone for lunch during dry time). When I asked if there was price adjustment because it took almost half the time his quote was based on, he said No. His reasoning included that 'all contractors are expensive' and that his day 'started at 6:30 am when he went shopping for my supplies'. However, none of his supplies were new or freshly opened, and he was not forthcoming with any receipts for said shopping. In the end, he knocked off $50. I know contractors have overhead and various unpaid hours. I am a business owner too, and know how costs can add up. I'm happy to pay honest rates for professional services. However, I think charging $266-283 /hour is inconsistent with the plaster-repair profession and skill set. My small repair was an extremely easy job. In a straightforward business like plaster repair, shopping once a month for standard supplies would reduce costs for valued customers. Terry is smart though.
